- 1988 Ferrari F40
Ferrari's 201 mph F40 is the definitive supercar and has a formidable reputation alongside the 250 GTO as possibly the best road Ferrari built to date. With the F40, Pininfarina produced an era-defining creation, one that even today is instantly recognisable by old and young enthusiasts alike. F40's were closely derived from the experimental GTO Evoluzione and the road-going 288 GTO (that the F40 replaced). The design features a tubular steel chassis with bonded composite inserts, most notably around the sills and floor pan, The 2,936 cc motor produces approximately 500 bhp at 7,000 rpm with the help of two water-cooled IHI turbochargers running 1.1 bar of boost. At 1,202 kg, the F40 had, and still has, a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio. Shatteringly fast by any comparison (especially for 1988), the F40 can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and hit 201 mph flat out making it the first production car to surpass this mystical boundary. This F40 is a very early production F40 and was delivered in December 1988 to its first owner by Motor S.p.A in Modena, Italy. One of the first 55 production cars, this early example has a ‘7’ series chassis number and many of the features only evident on the earliest production cars. As each of the early F40s were, this example fits under the desirable and sought-after ‘non-cat’ cars, built before the catalytic converter was introduced into series production. The earliest examples are known to be the rawer variant of the esteemed model. Corroborating with the very early build date are several characteristics which are indicative of an early ‘non-cat, non-adjust’ car. These include the bare aluminium intercoolers, and the different construction and finishing of carbon kevlar components such as the more rudimentary surface undeath the front clam, which draws the eyes to the unique way in which the NACA ducts are affixed to its underside. Under the front clam, the front brake cooling ducts and their flanges are also visible, and the manner they join to the clam is again different to later cars. Weighed in our workshops in November 2024, this example tips the scales at a scant 1,180kg wet. Similarly, this example features non-adjustable suspension, introduced as an option on the later produced cars. In addition, the car features many interesting early production characteristics such as alternative soft fabric seats (witnessed previously on other early examples by DK) and unpainted Kevlar parts such as brake ducts – a true reflection of how these early cars were built to be as minimal, basic and as lightweight as possible. Whilst the historian-compiled records for this example make no mention of ‘Vetroresina Scorrevoli’, translated as ‘Lexan sliders’, it is possible they were fitted at assembly or post production. Being such an early ‘7’ series example, body numbers are as we’d expect. Regardless, this F40 has received Ferrari’s ‘Red Book’ Classiche Certification, confirming their acceptance of Lexan windows as an original build option. The car remained with its first owner until 1992 when it was sold with just 1,800 kms on the clock. The car moved to France, was placed into a private collection and never driven. In 2011, this F40 was extracted and received a full recommissioning including new cambelts, tyres, injectors and of course, fuel cells. The car was imported to the UK by DK Engineering and sold to its first UK custodian with just 1,956 kms. Their usage was extremely limited, but an exception was made for the 25th anniversary meeting at Silverstone, where the car would join the track with 58 other examples of the model. DK Engineering sold the car to a good friend and customer in September 2015 who placed the car in storage. During their ownership, the headliner was removed and refitted. The car changed hands once more, passing to the most recent owner in 2018. As of October 2024, this example has passed through our workshops once more, receiving a major service including cambelts. Today offered for sale with just 2,950 kms from new, this example affords its next custodian a rare opportunity to acquire such a low mileage example of Ferrari’s first supercar. Auto Storica is pleasured to announce this spectacular Aston Martin V8 1 of 216 “Volante” examples ever produced with the Weber electronic fuel injection (V585 E.F.I) whom was introduced at the New York Motor Show in January 1986 alongside the similarly updated AMV8 saloon. The major advance was the fitting of electronically controlled sequential fuel injection system, made by Weber/Marelli giving a power output of around 315 bhp with the 5.3L displacement. As there were no carburettors within the 'V' of the engine and correspondingly no air cleaner assembly, the overall height of the engine was reduced and thus the E.F.I. cars have a totally flat bonnet with no air intake. All of the V8’s Weber e.f.i. cars had the attractive BBS cross spoke 7-inch wheels considered as rare and desired keenly by enthusiasts. Also comes standard from factory with the 3-Speed Torqueflite Chrysler automatic transmission. This unit premiered in the US where it had two owners during the 17 years it was in the country and later in 2004 it was imported to England where its third owner had a complete restoration carried out in "Jubilee Silver" color by Aston Martin specialists in Britain. It currently has an English registration. The major advance was the fitting of electronically controlled sequential fuel injection system, made by Weber/Marelli giving a power output of around 315 bhp with the 5.3L displacement. As there were no carburettors within the 'V' of the engine and correspondingly no air cleaner assembly, the overall height of the engine was reduced and thus the E.F.I. cars have a totally flat bonnet with no air intake. All of the V8’s Weber e.f.i. cars had the attractive BBS cross spoke 7-inch wheels considered as rare and desired keenly by enthusiasts. Also comes standard from factory with the 3-Speed Torqueflite Chrysler automatic transmission. This unit premiered in the US where it had two owners during the 17 years it was in the country and later in 2004 it was imported to England where its third owner had a complete restoration carried out in "Jubilee Silver" color by Aston Martin specialists in Britain. It currently has an English registration. Supplied new to the USA in 1961, finished in Newmarket Grey with a red sky leather interior. Little is known of the cars early history, but in 1989 it was acquired by Mr R D Pardilla of San Francisco who purchased the car when it was painted in a bright red. The previous owner had replaced the original engine with the correct type of engine with which the car is fitted with today. After 10 years of ownership Mr R D Pardilla sold the car to Mr Burbani Senior, who later in 1999 sold the car to his Son R Burbani Junior who imported the car to Italy where a nut and bolt restoration commenced. It was clear the car was destined to be restored into a perfect example, the car was returned to its original colour of New Market Grey, 3 years into the restoration the car was sold to noted British collector Mr Harmond who finished the restoration in Italy. The Aston Martin Virage Volante from the 1990s is a rare and particularly luxurious grand tourer that belongs to Aston Martin’s transitional period – it was one of Aston Martin’s last true “handcrafted cars” before the complete takeover by Ford. Cobra SR V8 Supercharged 385 hp. RHD. 1970. Only for bad boys The mythical AC Cobra was born at the beginning of the 60s thanks to the imagination of racing driver Caroll Shelby who had the idea to implement a V8 inside the AC Bristol chassis in order to beat Ferrari in competition. Initially the AC Bristol received a straight 6 engine and competed in Europe, it arrived at the 7 th position at Le Mans 1959 winning the 2-liters’ category. So according to Shelby’s demand, the AC founders Hurlock brothers modified their chassis to receive the Ford V8 260, giving birth to the first Cobra. Then it has been several evolutions and engines on the AC Cobra that has been produced until 1969. Owing to its great success, the Cobra has been produced as well by few other manufacturers such as Southern Roadcraft in order to perpetuate the myth and eventually bring some improvements. That’s how brothers Ian and Brian Nichols, renowned Southern Roadcraft founders for their high quality work and superior engineering, decided to produced their own Cobra called SR V8 with an improved chassis and a luxury interior. This impressive Cobra Southern Roadcraft was delivered the 13 th October 1970 and holds the chassis number 1U2603DN. It received a restoration in 2007 including new red and gold painting, chassis and gearbox renovation and a new 4.2 V8 supercharged engine from the specialist Trafford Competition Engines. It brings a renewed personality to this Cobra with its Cosworth race pistons, Group A rods, balanced crankshaft, AP racing clutch and Magnusson 110 Supercharger producing 385 horsepower and the phenomenal torque of 488 Nm at 3000 rpm! This power is transferred to the wheel via a Jaguar IRS rear axle with limited slip differential, the inboard brakes and double rear shock absorbers suspensions ensure a better behavior. Even though this beast cannot hide its muscles and to drive it requires self control and authority to tame it, the sound produced is incredible and the accelerations are exceptional. This car has been owned by Tony Croft from 2006 and participated several times to the Shelsley Walch, the oldest race in the world still using its original course. Today this Cobra is with UK papers, it runs perfectly and will be delivered with all its bills since 2006. In preparation for consignment, Burlingame Motors Inc., Burlingame, CA reviewed the car, performed a compression test returning 145, 150, 150, and 140, installed a new correct 190 SL fuel tank, cleaned out the filter petcock, and replaced a fuel line. General Condition Today this 190SL presents as a combination of a preserved and partially restored West Coast, dry climate car with enjoyably used cosmetics, reflecting an honest blend of original and refurbished features. The car has been thoughtfully enjoyed and cared for with authenticity in mind. The yellow paint is smooth with generally good gloss and smooth coverage. The paint has been metered with a digital paint meter returning thickness results in the lower single digits on all panels consistent with original paint. Lower areas in the rear portion of the car returned higher paint meter readings indicative of refinishing and blending into the original paint. Though the paint shows signs of age, the overall presentation invites driving enjoyment without concerns associated with maintaining perfection. The hood, doors, and trunk exhibit very good panel gaps and solid latching. The exterior chrome is in very good condition, with good luster and bright reflections on the bumpers. All lenses, lighting, and glass are in very good condition. The windshield is a more recent replacement in very good condition, while the side glass shows correct Sekurit brand etching. A set of original type painted slotted steel wheels are fitted wearing trim rings and center hubcaps. A set of matching Vredestein Classic 175 SR13 tires are mounted. The recently replaced canvas convertible top is the correct type with correct headliner and a clear plastic rear window which all of which are in excellent condition The interior is a combination of preservation and older restoration offering a rewarding and cohesive presence once again inviting the driving experience. The seats, door panels, and dash pad are in very good condition. The dashboard is particularly nice, arrayed with preserved gauges showing authentic light patina to the dial faces and surprisingly nice chrome finishes. The excellent condition of the chrome bezels and refined detailing of the dash, steering wheel and other interior elements are a delightful blend of originality and selective restoration. The interior door panels, armrests, and various trim are all present and in harmony with the overall finishes. The correct vinyl floor covering appears to have been more recently replaced while the rear carpeted area remains quite nice, likely replaced some years ago. The trunk is very clean and properly finished in satin black including the satin black trunk lid underside, correct fluted rubber trunk mat, and a matching full sized spare tire is properly mounted in the wheel tub with the factory retaining clamp in place. Lifting the hood, the inner front fender metal folds still retain factory spot welding indicative of factory assembly. The engine compartment is tidy and mechanically sound displaying correct parts, a correct aluminum cam cover, and twin Solex carburetors, which are believed to be original. The heater boxes, often collapsed or damaged, remain in very good condition. The various and correct Mercedes-Benz numbers, build plates, and stampings are all consistent with the body and chassis sequences for original cars. The engine has a correct engine stamping and a matching riveted engine plate. The chassis is in generally good condition representative of a generally preserved car showing no visual evidence of structural compromise to the floor pans or suspension mounting points. In truth, when Chrysler assumed control of Lamborghini in the 1980s, it had rather hoped that the new Diablo would be ready in time for the marque’s landmark birthday. Furthermore, the 1977 World Rally Champion Sandro Munari was brought in to hone the suspension. And it’s fair to say the Italian knew a thing or to about road-holding and balance. Combined with a plethora of comfort- and refinement-based upgrades implemented to overcome some of the Countach’s established foibles, the 25th Anniversary is the best Countach to drive and enjoy. Chassis number 12785 Finished in Rosso Siviglia over a Nero interior and specified from new with the optional ‘Sports’ driver’s seat, this stunning matching-numbers 25th Anniversary boasts an excellent provenance and a rich service history – a testament to the meticulous care of its small number of owners. Delivered new to Zimmermann & Kawitz in Germany via Mu.N Neuwagen of Berlin in October 1989, chassis number 12785 was assigned the registration ‘HB-KP 334’, marking the beginning of its storied journey. After several years of enjoyment by its owner, this Countach received its first service in June 1992, at the official Lamborghini service centre, Auto-Kremer in Bonn, ensuring the highest standard of maintenance from the start. This level of care continued with services undertaken in June 1994, July 1997, and June 1999, all performed by the same trusted service centre. In 2003, chassis number 12785 was celebrated at the Lamborghini 40th Anniversary Factory Party and Tour in Sant’Agata and the surrounding areas, with the next scheduled service of the vehicle undertaken in July 2004. Fast forward to March 2014, when Monika Katharina Zaske acquired the vehicle in Gottmadingen, Germany, later passing it to Noise & Fire GmbH in Obersulm. In April 2018, the Countach found its way to Futuro E Ingenio S.L in Malaga, Spain, when its odometer showed 25,457 km. Shortly after arriving in the country it underwent an inspection, confirming its excellent condition. Its time in Andalusia was short lived, though, as in April 2019, the vehicle returned to Germany, re-registering under ‘HN-LP 3333’ after passing through a GTU inspection. Chassis number 12785 continued to receive top-tier care with subsequent inspections in June 2021 and January 2023, where it proudly secured its Roadworthiness Certificate at 25,477 km. In April 2023, an International Motor Insurance Certificate was issued, linking the vehicle to ‘WCM – Worldwide Car Management’ in Obersulm, Germany. The same year, the car participated in the Lamborghini 60th Anniversary Tour. Most recently, in October 2024, it was delivered to Top Motors Salvioli in Modena, Italy, for servicing, continuing its tradition of excellence. This Aston Martin DBS is an extremely rare example and is one of only 15 six-cylinder DBS cars that were fitted with fuel injection. Offered on the DB6 MkII and the DBS between 1969 and 1971, the system was the first all-British electronic set-up and had been developed by the Coventry-based Brico company. Only when Brico was sold to Lucas – which had its own mechanical injection system – did Aston Martin revert to offering only carburettors on the DBS. The guarantee for chassis number 5579/R was issued on 1 May 1970 and it was sold via Lazenby Garages to its first owner, a Mr Stanwell of Boston in Lincolnshire. The car was fitted with an automatic gearbox and finished in Azzurro Blue with Dark Blue Connolly leather interior. Its factory build sheet doesn’t record any further owners, but in the late 1980s it was one of four cars that were bought from a private collector in Wales by Northamptonshire-based Maurdon Motors. It was then kept – unused – in the company’s own collection until being sold to its next custodian in 1993. The DBS changed hands again in 2001, and by 2016 it was decided to treat it to a full restoration. The work was carried out by marque specialist Richards of England and involved stripping the car back to bare metal. Once the necessary bodywork repairs had been carried out, it was initially resprayed in Bahama Yellow before it was decided to go with the original shade of Azzurro Blue instead. The attention to detail even extended to retaining the red enamelled ‘FI’ badges in the front wings. The six-cylinder engine – number 400/4561/SFI – was rebuilt and enlarged to 4.2 litres. The manual gearbox, which had replaced the automatic unit that the car had originally been specified with, was also rebuilt. Such was the fastidious nature of the whole project that over £200,000 had been spent by July 2018. The restoration was completed the following year and is fully documented in a hardback book that is covered in the same leather that’s been used for the Aston Martin’s interior. More recent work has included a differential rebuilt in May 2023 and all invoices have been kept in the extensive history file, which also includes the factory build sheet and MoT certificates going back to the early 1980s. He produced a modern, sharp, square-edged design that set the template for the subsequent V8 models and helped to establish the accepted ‘look’ for a big Aston throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The DBS should have been powered by a V8 engine from day one, but Tadek Marek’s new 5.3-litre unit wasn’t ready in time, so Aston Martin carried over the 4-litre six-cylinder engine from the DB6. It was available in either standard 282bhp SU-carburettor form, or as the 325bhp Vantage, which used Weber carburettors. A handful of cars were also produced with the Brico electronic fuel-injection system. Drive was via a ZF five-speed manual gearbox or a three-speed Borg-Warner automatic, and the rear suspension employed a de Dion set-up rather than the DB6’s live axle. The DBS V8 eventually joined the six-cylinder model in 1969, the same year in which the DBS starred alongside George Lazenby in the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. When Autocar tested a V8-engined car in 1971, it recorded a top speed of 161mph and summed up the model with the words: ‘Tremendous performance, superb brakes, excellent handling’. BMW began creating the 8-Series in the 1980s, and in today’s dollars, the equivalent of $900 million was spent in development costs. The E31 made its debut at the 1989 Frankfurt Auto Show and the car was immediately a hit with its low-aerodynamic lines and impressive V-12 engine. Black Horse Garage is proud to represent this 1997 BMW 850 Ci. This 850 has had nearly $35,000 worth of restoration and service work performed on it in the last three years, including here at Black Horse Garage. The previous owner is a BMW collector and knowledgeable enthusiast of the 8-Series. He meticulously maintained and serviced the car and it comes with service records that show work and purchases on: suspension, engine performance, accessories, C-31 front bumper, and Alpina wheels to name a few. One of the first things you notice is how sleek and jet-like the 850 looks, especially in Cosmo Black. The designer of the car, Klaus Kapitza, was aiming for a design with the lowest drag coefficient the team could construct (0.29 coefficient of drag).
