  • 1997-ford-escort-wrc

A factory Ford Escort WRC with outstanding period provenance, originally driven by rally legends Carlos Sainz and Juha Kankkunen. Built by Ford Motorsport and further developed by M-Sport, this historically significant Escort is eligible for historic rallying and continues to be a popular invitee at major events including Goodwood. Few names in international rallying command the same reverence as Ford, Sainz, Kankkunen and Escort. In 1997, the World Rally Championship entered a new era with the introduction of the World Rally Car formula, replacing the long standing 'Group A' category. The new rules allowed greater technical freedom and marked a significant departure from the more production-based homologation models of the previous decade. It also marked a turning point for Ford, who for the first time did not run the Works cars themselves from the Boreham-based Ford Motorsport. Instead, the running and later the engineering of the cars was handed over to former Ford Works driver, Malcolm Wilson's M-Sport organisation. This car, originally constructed in 1996 by Ford Motorsport at Boreham, was one of the earliest factory Escort WRCs and competed under chassis #4. In 1998, following M-Sport’s takeover of the Works Ford development programme, it was upgraded to their latest chassis and roll cage specification, as confirmed by Gordon Vincent of RV Fabrications (formerly ACS Ltd), who personally carried out the modifications in period. From that point, the car appeared in period records as chassis 4A. However, Vincent has verified that the car retained the same physical shell throughout, bearing shell number MS97WR00001/R01/04/1/97. P6 FMC made its debut at the 1997 Monte Carlo Rally in the hands of Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya, who drove it to second place overall. Throughout that season, it contested multiple rounds of the World Rally Championship, including the Swedish Rally, Rally Portugal, Rallye de France–Tour de Corse and the Acropolis Rally, with a driver line up that also included Juha Kankkunen, Armin Schwarz and Jarmo Kytölehto. Highlights included multiple WRC podium finishes and a third place result on Rally Finland in the hands of Kytölehto. After two years as a Works-entered car, the Escort was campaigned by Ford Turkey during the 1999 and 2000 seasons, competing in Turkish and Greek rallies before being sold to David Robinson, who rallied it in the UK until 2015. A regular invitee to Goodwood (making its debut there in 1997 and appearing countless times over the following three decades), the current owner has used the car sparingly for British events since then, including notable appearances at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and SpeedWeek, where it has been driven by both Stig Blomqvist and Juha Kankkunen. Mechanically, the car benefits from a comprehensive and costly engine rebuild carried out in 2020 using all correct specification parts. It has covered very few miles since, with just two appearances at Goodwood accounting for the current mileage. The Escort remains in unrestricted specification and is described as 'on the button' and ready for competition. Now eligible for historic rallying and wearing its original factory livery, this Escort offers an exceptionally competitive platform within pre-2000 WRC events. It is complete with a substantial competition history file including period results, verification of shell identity, engine build details and documentation confirming its factory provenance. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a genuine works Ford Escort WRC with direct links to Sainz, Kankkunen, Blomqvist and the golden era of World Rallying. It remains one of the most significant early examples of the WRC formula and is ideal for collectors, historic competitors or marque specialists seeking an iconic and usable piece of rallying history. 1997 Ford Escort WRC Iconic Auctioneers Ltd If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1950-fiat-1100-cabriolet-by-stabilimenti-farina

Exquisite design sense clearly ran in the Farina family: This 1950 Fiat 1100 Cabriolet was bodied by Stabilimenti Farina of Turin, Italy. This carrozzeria was established by Giovanni Carlo Farina—older brother of none other than Battista “Pinin” Farina and, as this charming cabriolet demonstrates, a man of no small talent in his own right. Sold new in Italy to Sig. Alessandro Alexandri in the summer of 1950, period photos show the proud owner and his family behind the wheel of his glimmering new coachbuilt Fiat. A short time later, it changed hands and was put into service as a promotional vehicle for the Italian cycling team US Salco. The pretty little Fiat remained in Italy for much of its life, and in the 1980s was discovered in complete but tired condition by the owner of an Italian restoration shop. Over the course of nearly two decades, he is said to have personally and painstakingly restored the Fiat from the ground up, making several missing pieces by hand. Completed in the early 2000s, this marvelous Fiat today presents with a charming character and a mellowed restoration. Finished in attractive colors and nicely detailed, this rare and fascinating automobile is one of only four known survivors of this beautiful Farina design. Power is supplied by a 1,089-cubic-centimeter inline four-cylinder engine fed by a twin-choke Weber carburetor and mated to a column-shift four-speed manual gearbox; paired with Farina’s lightweight alloy coachwork, this Fiat promises to be an engaging performer on spirited drives and longer rallies. Since its acquisition by its present caretakers, who maintain an eclectic, well-curated private stable, this charming Fiat is said to have benefited from mechanical care and improvement with the goal of making it an enjoyable driver. With its delicate proportions and seldom-seen coachwork, it is a very fine example of Stabilimenti Farina’s early post-war aesthetic. 1950 Fiat 1100 Cabriolet by Stabilimenti Farina RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1968 Ferrari 330 GTS

At the 1966 Paris Auto Salon, Ferrari launched the 330 GTS, successor to the 275 GTS and the open version of the popular 330 GTC coupe. It featured an enlarged 4.0-liter V-12 breathing through three triple-choke Weber DCZ/6 carburetors, producing a conservatively estimated 300 brake horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 244 pound-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm, delivered through a five-speed transaxle and ZF limited-slip differential. Zero to 60 mph was possible in around 6.0 seconds and the top speed was nearly 150 mph, both incredibly impressive figures for a convertible in the late 1960s. Nimble driving dynamics come from a fully independent suspension comprised of unequal-length wishbones, coil springs, and Koni shock absorbers, plus anti-roll bars at both ends. Four-wheel Girling vented disc brakes sat behind either standard Campagnolo magnesium alloy or optional Borrani wire wheels. The car looked spectacular, thanks to Pininfarina bodywork that drew inspiration from the contemporary 500 Superfast, with its split front bumper, triple-louvered engine vents on each fender, and an elegant swage line along each flank, tying the front end to the rear. The bodywork was mostly steel, aside from the doors, hood, and trunk, which were formed from aluminum. The production process saw bare chassis transported directly from the Ferrari factory at Maranello to Pininfarina’s plant at Grugliasco, outside Turin, where they were fitted with bodywork before being returned to Ferrari for the final mechanical installation. Sublimely detailed, the 330 GTS’s design is widely regarded as one of the most elegant produced by Ferrari during a decade of greatness. The 330 GTS was, of course, limited in production, with only 100 examples produced. They were fiercely desirable when new and have never really fallen out of favor, with collectors still pursuing the finest examples for their stables. CHASSIS NUMBER 11027 Chassis number 11027, offered here, was the 86th 330 GTS built, completed in February 1968. It was delivered to its original owner shortly thereafter via Luigi Chinetti Motors of Greenwich, Connecticut, finished in Argento with Nero interior and the desirable options of Borrani wire wheels and air conditioning. According to the records of Ferrari historian Marcel Massini, a copy of whose historical report is on file, the car was driven some 25,000 actual miles over the first decade of its life, before being sold through a Virginia dealer in 1976. It was refinished later in the decade and thereafter fully restored, after which it earned Best in Show awards at the 1985 and 1986 Ferrari Newport Concours and at the 1987 Sporst Car Club of America Concours in Albany, New York. In February 1994, collector and vintage racer Edie Arrowsmith purschased the 330 GTS, and in her ownership it was restored anew by Steve Tillack. It was shown at the Palm Beach International Concours d’Elegance in 2005, then in 2007 was acquired by a collector on the East Coast in whose ownership it appeared at the 2013 Cavallino Classic and was featured in the 2014 official Ferrari Calendar by Gunther Raupp. More recently, chassis number 11027 has been returned to its original shade of Argento. Additionally, the interior has been reupholstered in period-correct Rosso Connolly hide. This 330 GTS is offered in beautiful overall condition with numbers-matching engine and gearbox. It is an outstanding example of the model that presents superbly from tip to tail and is true to the legacy of one of the most exciting open Ferraris of its generation. 1968 Ferrari 330 GTS RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1951 Alfa Romeo 1900 Berlina

This beautiful Alfa Romeo was built on October 31st 1951, and delivered to Alfa Romeo Lugano on November 5th of that year - the original customs clearance certificate dated November 14th 1951 still exists today. During its life, the Berlina underwent a contemporary Abarth tuning with two Weber carburettors and Abarth intake manifold - resulting in a 22 km/h increase in top speed according to the Abarth brochure. After several previous owners and a change of colour from blue to green, the Alfa was faithfully restored a few years ago and presents itself again in the elegant dark blue. The Mille-Miglia eligible sedan has a FIVA-ID, an Alfa Romeo Certificato d'Origine which confirms the matching numbers, and will be handed over to a new owner with the original warranty booklet from 1951. The Alfa Romeo is in very good condition and passed its last MOT as a veteran car in February 2017. The vehicle can be freshy MOT'd on request. 1951 Alfa Romeo 1900 Berlina Oldtimer Galerie International GmbH If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1963 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider by Carrozzeria Touring

The Alfa Romeo 2600 (designated 106-Series) was Alfa Romeo's six-cylinder flagship model produced from 1962 through to 1968. It was the successor to the Alfa Romeo 2000 and has become historically significant as the last Alfa Romeo to have been fitted with an inline six-cylinder engine with twin overhead camshafts which had been the traditional Alfa Romeo engine configuration since the 1920s. The 2600 models were first introduced in 1962 in Berlinetta (saloon), Sprint (coupé) and Spider (convertible) forms and the 2,584cc straight-six produced around 145bhp and 156lb/ft of torque, which was certainly enough to let you drive like an Italian. Power was fed to the rear wheels via a 5-speed gearbox and was kept in check by all-round coil-sprung suspension and servo-assisted disc/drum brakes. Rarest of the two high-performance variants was the Touring-bodied Spider, a total of 2,255 being produced between 1962 and 1965. The strikingly good looking four-seat Spider was marketed as a 'fast tourer' rather than an out-and-out sports car, which is exactly what Alfa had in mind. Today, this rare and hitherto under-appreciated model is becoming increasingly sought after by Classic Alfa enthusiasts. Factory-built, right-hand drive, 2600 Spiders cars were only available after 1964 and prior to that, bespoke conversion to right-hand drive for UK-cars was the sole prerogative of Worthing-based Ruddspeed. Ken Rudd was an established competition driver, a talented engineer and his name became associated with AC, Aston Martin, Austin-Healy, Volvo, Alfa and later converting Ford Mustangs to right-hand drive. During the late 1950s/early 1960s, he was an agent for Alfa Romeo and was tasked by the factory with the conversion to right-hand drive of any Alfas destined for the UK. The Touring-bodied 2600 Spider was a rare car anyway and it is thought that only a handful passed through Ruddspeed's workshops, including the beautiful example on offer here which was subsequently delivered on 24th April 1963 to its first owner, a Mr David Graham of Chelmsford. The car's extensive history file contains a substantial amount of servicing and restoration invoices accumulated by its various owners, confirming that this rare right-hand drive example has benefited from much care and attention over the years. Originally finished in Bianco Antico, it spent many years wearing Alfa Rosso before finally being returned to Alfa White prior to our vendor's purchase in 2016. Since then, it has benefited from an extensive renovation over a three year period, carried out by marque specialists, K & L Autos of Golders Green and Century Classics of Hungerford, with additional work by Benalfa of Westbury and our vendor's own in-house mechanic. The engine has been fully serviced twice during his ownership and we understand that over £15,000 has been invested to keep the car in top form including a recent paint refresh. As part of a large private Collection, the Alfa has been used lightly over the last few years but according to our vendor 'It's a great GT car, eating up the miles whether on a motorway or country roads and the five-speed 'box is a delight'. In addition to the numerous invoices, the history file contains a photocopy of the old 'buff' logbook, its V5C, current MOT and a factory workshop manual. Late 1950s and early 1960s Alfas have a unique sense of magic and romance and this elegant creation by Carrozzeria Touring represents La Dolce Vita, the Via Veneto and Audrey Hepburn personified. To quote from a piece by a well known Alfa collector 'Imagine it's a balmy, late July, Sunday evening in central Rome and you pull up in this sparkling Alfa right outside the Doney Café on the Via Veneto, hoping to enjoy some of Maria Foglieni's famous Cantuccini Biscotti and a glass of Vin Santo. The Alfa ticks and pings as it cools and the yellow street lights are reflected in its gleaming white coachwork, much to the delight of the laughing and chattering beautiful people as they pass on the way up the Via Vittorio making the most of the last hours of their Roman weekend'. 1963 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider by Carrozzeria Touring Iconic Auctioneers Ltd If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. In July 1981, the most radical evolution of the Renault 5 was launched. Marcello Gandini maximized the lines of the popular French utility vehicle by widening the hips excessively, necessary to accommodate the engine and transmission, which were now located behind the -only- front seats. Thus, the link between street and competition was born. The Renault 5 Turbo was born. The new Dieppe creation soon proved its worth in the world of rallying, winning the Monte-Carlo Rally that same year and twice winning the Tour de Corse, with a certain Jean Ragnotti at the wheel, beating the Audi Quattro, Lancia 037 and Porsche 911 with his spectacular driving skills. The unit we are offering today is a Renault 5 Turbo 2, the evolution of the Renault 5 Turbo. Its engine, a 1.4-litre four-cylinder Cévennes, develops 250 hp, thanks to a ball-bearing turbo and an improved camshaft. It also has a high-flow fuel pump. All this display of power is topped off with a 4 to 1 exhaust manifold configuration. Power is transmitted to the rear axle via a short-throw gearbox with self-locking, and a height- and hardness-adjustable coilover suspension is responsible for keeping it glued to the asphalt. The wheels, Speedline Corse, with a spectacular rear groove, hide AP Racing 4-piston steel disc brakes. The brake force distributor and the double brake pump are from the same firm. • 1989 Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider

The Alfa Romeo Spider Series 2 was launched to the public in 1970 with many exterior and interior changes, the most significant of which was the Kamm tail rear which greatly improved luggage space. Produced until the early 1990s, the spider is considered one of Alfa’s greatest successes. The Spider shares many of the Alfa Giulia mechanicals including the twin cam inline four-cylinder engine and independent front and solid axle rear suspension. The Spider was one of the first sports cars to incorporate front and rear crumple zones. In 1971 Alfa Romeo introduced the more powerful 2000 Spider. Powered by a 1,962cc twin cam engine mated to a five speed manual gearbox, this gave the Spider a top speed of more than 120mph from its 132hp engine. The Alfa Romeo Spider 2000 offered for sale at Autostorcio is a 1989 example and is finished in Alfa Rosso with a Black hood and Black interior trim. This lovely example was imported and registered in the United Kingdom by Bell and Colvill Ltd of Surrey and has covered an indicated 45,693 miles. Having been maintained to a very high standard with recent works including a full service, brake overhaul and new tyres being fitted. Offered for sale with an extensive history file including a current V5 certificate, numerous invoices, previous MOT certificates and other related material. • 1957-mercedes-benz-300-sl-roadster-3

Created to spearhead Mercedes-Benz's return to competition in the post-war era, the 300SL debuted in the 1952 Mille Miglia, finishing 2nd and 4th overall. Wins in the Carrera Pan-Americana and at Le Mans followed, and the 300SL was on its way to becoming part of motor sporting legend. The first racers were open-topped but before the '52 season's end the distinctive gull-wing doored Coupé had appeared. Unusually high sills were a feature of the multi-tubular spaceframe chassis, and while access was not a problem of the open car, the adoption of coupé bodywork required innovative thinking - hence the gull-wing doors. Launched in 1954, the production 300SL retained the spaceframe chassis of the racer and was powered by a 2,996cc, overhead-camshaft, inline six canted at 45 degrees to achieve a lower, more aerodynamic bonnet line. Using innovative direct fuel injection, this state-of-the-art power unit produced 215bhp at 5,800rpm. A four-speed gearbox transmitted power to the hypoid bevel rear axle. Suspension was independent all round by wishbones and coil springs at the front, with swing axles and coil springs at the rear. Tested by the highly respected American magazine Road & Track in 1955, the 300SL accelerated from 0-60mph in 7.4 seconds, going on to achieve a top speed of 140mph: outstanding figures for its day. It was, arguably, the world's first supercar. Clearly the 300SL Coupé would be a hard act to follow yet the Roadster version, introduced just three years later, succeeded in bettering its closed cousin's already exemplary road manners. Built with conventional doors, the 300SL Roadster was first exhibited at the Geneva Salon in May 1957 and was an immediate hit with the 1950s 'jet set' including royalty, actors and socialites. The production of an open 300SL involved altering the cockpit area, where the spaceframe was redesigned to permit lower sills for improved access. At the same time the rear suspension was changed to incorporate low-pivot swing axles. The 300SL Roadster sold well for a car that cost more than a Ferrari 250GT California Spyder, and would out-live the 300SL Coupé by several years This wonderful matching numbers 300 SL Roadster left the factory on 9th December 1957 to be sent to distributor Studebaker/Packard in South Bend, Indiana, USA. The original colour scheme was Hellblau with white leather interior and beige hood. Other original features listed include instruments in English/miles, sealed-beam headlights, 'Made in Western Germany' plaques, Becker Mexico radio, reversing light, and a 3.89:1 ratio rear axle. It is understood that this 300 SL had just two keepers in the USA, moving from Indiana to Bayshore, New York for its second custodian, Mr Rager. Rager would keep the 300 SL until 1989 when it was sold back to Germany with just 33,000 miles to a specialist restorer, Mr Kaesmacher of Dusseldorf. During At that time the car was re-trimmed in Cognac leather and was also fitted with European headlamps and a new black soft-top. The engine and gearbox were overhauled and other mechanical works carried out by Kaesmacher. 2011 saw the car move to 300 SL specialists HK Engineering who carried out further documented works to the car. Shortly thereafter, the car was purchased by noted expert Ivan Page-Radcliff who imported the car into the UK. Page-Radcliff’s subject expertise was unrivalled, with a career that had started out selling 300 SL from Brooklands Motor Cars in period. As a man who sold over 100 300 SL Gullwings, he certainly knew how to find a great example. In 2013 the 300 SL was sold to a French collector where it would remain for a further two years ahead of return and reimportation to the UK by the current owner in 2015. In the past ten years, this example has been used sparingly, received routine maintenance by DK Engineering and more recently, Riverside Engineering. As confirmed by Martin Cushway in January 2025, all numbers on this 300 SL roadster match the original data card; chassis, engine, gearbox etc, including each of the wheels and the spare. It is understood that fewer than 50% of Roadster production retains its original gearbox today. Today this example presents well, accompanied by its history folio and UK registration and is available to view at our showrooms outside London immediately. 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster D.K. • 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A by Sindelfingen

Few automobiles of the Classic Era could compare in prestige, grandeur, and performance to the Mercedes-Benz 540 K, inarguably one of the finest and most beautiful cars ever to come from Stuttgart. Engineered by Hans Nibel, the 540 K boasted a pushrod overhead-valve inline eight-cylinder engine, displacing 5,401 cubic centimeters and equipped with a double-vane Roots-type supercharger. When engaged at full throttle, the supercharger boosted horsepower to 180, enabling most any style to reach 100 mph. Chassis number 130945 is a very special car. As a relatively early example of the 540 K, it was thus delivered with the so-called first-series Cabriolet A body. One of the most attractive styles on the 540 K, the first-series Cabriolet A was essentially a copy of that used on the 500 K, to its benefit; it features the long, flowing open fenders that visually emphasize the power lurking between them, as well as double rear-mounted spares that further add an appearance of length and grace, and an extremely low windshield. The early 540 K Cabriolet A clearly recalls the lines of the great SSKs in a way that few other bodies do, and thus these are among the most desirable designs on this great chassis. The Daimler-Benz kommission sheet, a copy of which is on file, shows that chassis number 130945 was indeed delivered as a Cabriolet A, with the client of record having been Mrs. Maria Leyder of Stuttgart. Like many 540 Ks, the car eventually made its way to the United States in the post-war era, and was purchased, likely in the 1950s, by Don Rounds of Denver, Colorado. President of the Don M. Rounds Drilling Company, he was an internationally known oil driller and wildcatter, credited by his obituary as “one of the important oil figures who led the Rocky Mountain oil boom following World War II.” He also had fine taste in cars, as he also possessed a Duesenberg Model J in the same era. Following Mr. Rounds’s passing in 1969, the 540 K was offered by his estate; a description of the car, from the records of historian Jonathan Sierakowski and included in the file, notes that it had been mechanically restored but was likely still wearing its original finishes, with accompanying photographs showing it in apparently very good and intact condition. It was sold from the estate in 1970 to engineer Lowell E. Ledford of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who kept the car for 15 years, undertaking its first restoration. In his care it was awarded its Primary First Place, with a perfect 100 points, at the Classic Car Club of America Gulf Area Grand Classic in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1977. Mr. Ledford sold the car to Don Williams of the Blackhawk Collection in 1985. A color photograph published in the second volume of Jan Melin’s book, Mercedes-Benz: The Supercharged 8-Cylinder Cars of the 1930s, shows the car in this period, painted the red that was then de rigeur for any self-respecting 540 K. Subsequent owners included Japanese collector Nachiro Ishikawa, who maintained the car in California but occasionally journeyed with it to Europe; reportedly he drove it twice in the famed Monte Carlo Historic Rally, finishing 1st in the event in both 1991 and 1994. In the mid-1990s he sold the car to the longtime Mercedes-Benz procurer, Thomas Taffet, who would become its next longtime owner and caretaker. The car was sold from the Taffet collection in 2011, and following a brief period with a collector in the UAE, was returned to the United States and purchased for the present owner’s collection, in which it has remained since. Its older restoration was freshened cosmetically near the end of Mr. Taffet’s long ownership, and is still quite attractive overall, with its red and black finish an elegant contrast to the bright red interior, as proven by its exhibition at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2019. Both the chassis and engine number stamps are original, as is the firewall data plate. More recently, the car received a service in preparation for sale by the highly regarded firm of Fast Cars in Redondo Beach, California, invoices for which work are included in the file. A lovely example of the 540 K in its highly sought-after first-series Cabriolet A form, this car has the beautiful, graceful lines and robust performance that one seeks in this significant model. It would be an ideal, astute acquisition for the new owner seeking a supercharged Mercedes-Benz for touring or regional concours competition, where it would undoubtedly be warmly welcomed as it has by enthusiasts for half a century. It has all the appeal that it did in the hands of Mrs. Leyder in 1936. 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A by Sindelfingen RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer.
