- 1961-lotus-elite-series-2
A little over 1,000 examples of Colin Chapman’s groundbreaking glass fibre-monocoque Type 14 Lotus Elite were ever built, only a handful of which were exported to Japan. Chassis number EB1321837 was one of three to make that journey in 1961, having been invoiced to the Fuyo Trading Co Ltd on 23 August 1961, according to factory records. Its first owner in Japan was none other than Soichiro Honda, founder of the eponymous Honda Motor Company. “The Elite was like an egg—a world first,” explained Hirotoshi Honda, son of Soichiro and founder of the firm’s tuning arm Mugen, while talking to Classic & Sports Car in 2021. “No frame, no separate chassis: it was kind of like a UFO at that time, and my father was always interested in something new.” Such was the impact of the Elite on Soichiro that his son believed it to have inspired the dashboard on one of Honda’s first mass-produced cars, the S600. In 1962, Honda finished construction of the Suzuka Circuit in Mie Prefecture, where the racy Elite was put through its paces by legendary Japanese driver Tetsu Ikuzawa. Hirotoshi then claimed the dubious honour of being the first person to crash at the circuit, rolling the Elite at Spoon Curve before the track had officially opened. “At the time there were only two Lotus Elites in Japan, so nobody could fix it,” recalled Honda. “I eventually found a small garage in central Tokyo, but it took a long time.” The Elite was refinished in jet black and rejoined the family’s stable of cars but after several near misses on Tokyo’s dimly lit streets, Hirotoshi convinced his father to have the car repainted in white. Hirotoshi eventually left the country, and upon his return two years later discovered his father had donated the car to the Honda International Technical School, where it remained for many years. In 1980 the disassembled Lotus was acquired by the consigning owner, and in 2018 he commissioned Bushell’s Restorations in Kent to carry out a complete nut-and-bolt rebuild. The Elite was restored over three years, with all previous crash repairs correctly remedied along with fitment of a ZF four-speed gearbox and replacement 1216-cc Coventry Climax engine built to Super 95 specification by Rawlson Racing. The car was finished in Grand Prix White in a nod to its Honda history, while a sanded patch of the inner boot was left exposed to show its previous colour changes—as were scratches to the driver’s window frame caused during the crash at Suzuka. The Type 14 Lotus Elite is a truly special car with achingly beautiful styling, competition pedigree, and genuine rarity all counting in its favour. This example is even more remarkable, boasting a fascinating early history with a visionary automotive giant who helped shape the modern world: Soichiro Honda. 1961 Lotus Elite Series 2 RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1963 Lotus Eleven Breadvan
FIA HTP Papers. Highly eligible with Goodwood provenance. Road registered. The Lotus Eleven was a racing car built from 1956 to 1958 and proved to be very competitive particularly in the hands of British racing driver Graham Capel. Graham had seen how successful the Ferrari 250 Breadvan and had been and decided to apply the same principles to his own Lotus Eleven by adding the distinctive long low roofline and pizza oven rear window. Capel’s car finished second in class at Goodwood on 12th September 1962 paving the way for a handful of other Elevens being converted to coupes. Most of the converted Elevens over the proceeding years were converted back to original open specification. Fascinated by Capel’s story Lotus aficionado David Cooke tracked down Graham Chapel, who still had some of the original Breadvan bodywork including its iconic hardtop. He also had a Lotus Eleven series 2 project which he was in the process of rebuilding. I deal was agreed and David with Capel’s assistance utilised the skill of friend, pre-war Alfa Romeo expert and renowned ‘resurrectionist’ Neil Twyman, the man behind the CEGGA-Ferrari, this Lotus was painstakingly converted. As with Davids CEGGA Ferrari rebuild having access to the original constructor along with drawings proved invaluable, recreating the car as per original, even down to its period correct BMC Squadron Blue bodywork including Capel’s original sponsors David Plumstead Racing. David enjoyed many successful races in the UK and Europe with the highlight being the Moss Trophy at Goodwood 72 members meeting in 2014. In the hands of Joe Twyman and Olly Bryant the little Breadvan finished half a second behind its more powerful rival the Aston Martin DB4 GT having repeatedly changed places with the Aston. This much loved unique car will certainly be welcomed at numerous historic events in the UK and abroad. Supplied with a comprehensive history file including a current V5 registration document along with valid FIA HTP papers. 1963 Lotus Eleven Breadvan Autostorico Partners LLP If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1956 OSCA MT4
This pretty little OSCA MT4 boasts a fascinating history, which has been extensively researched by the owner who oversaw its painstaking restoration. Chassis number 1176 was built in 1956 and was shipped to its first owner, Jim Simpson, in October of that year. Unique in having a wheelbase of 2300mm instead of 2200mm, it also wore a one-off coupé body that was made by the Ferrara-based Morelli coachbuilding company. Chicago-born Simpson was a good customer of OSCA and had a lot of experience racing MT4s. A Republican congressman during the 1930s, he had been educated at Harvard and owned farms in Illinois and Virginia. He also funded the Simpson Special – a streamlined MT4 with which OSCA set numerous records at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1955. Simpson had owned 1176 for only a couple of months before crashing it on the public road – destroying the coupé body in the process. He sold the car shortly afterwards and it formed the basis for a Devin-bodied project that was never completed. The OSCA eventually ended up in Canada, from where it was imported to Germany in 1980. Here it formed part of the Peter Kaus ‘Rosso Bianco’ museum where it was seen and noted by John deBoer in his book, published in 1994. In the meantime, its engine had been removed and installed in chassis number 1183. After passing through a number of other owners, the rolling chassis was acquired in October 2007 by a noted marque enthusiast in the UK. He set about researching the history of 1176 and, in particular, its original coupé bodywork, which he intended to recreate. Frustratingly, no information or photographs were forthcoming until 2016, when the factory drawing was found by Alfieri Maserati – by which time the owner had commissioned and fitted an all-new barchetta-style body. The OSCA had been restored between 2009 and 2014 by Autofficinaldo and Carrozzeria Garuti in Italy, and an authentic 1490cc twin-spark engine was built by the world-renowned Hall & Hall in Lincolnshire. Numbered ‘1500N’, this jewel of a powerplant produces nearly 120bhp – enough to provide strong performance in a car that weighs only 650kg. It drives through a correct ZF gearbox, which was rebuilt in 2015. Inside, the spartan cabin features only the essential information that you’d expect from a competition car – revs, water temperature and oil pressure – and the twin side-exit exhausts come out on the driver’s side. From behind the thin wood-rimmed steering wheel, it’s therefore easy to evoke the 1950s road races in which these little OSCAs excelled. Now being offered for sale at The Classic Motor Hub, this MT4 has taken part in the Gran Premio Nuvolari and Circuito di Avezzano, and is supplied with a FIVA identity card. It also comes with a CD of photographs showing the body build, plus a wealth of information about the restoration and recent research. MARQUE HISTORY Having sold their shares to the Orsi family in 1937, Ernesto, Ettore and Bindo Maserati stayed with their eponymous car company for another 10 years. Then, in 1947, the three brothers left to set up Officine Specializzate Costruzione Automobili – OSCA. Basing themselves in San Lazzaro di Savena near Bologna, where the pre-war Maseratis had been built, the brothers produced a series of small-capacity OSCA sport-racing cars and single-seaters. The first of them – and by far the best known – was the MT4, which first appeared in 1948 with a 1092cc engine. That lightweight four-cylinder unit was gradually developed and enlarged, the ultimate variant being the 1490cc twin-spark Tipo 372 unit. OSCA enjoyed considerable motorsport success from as early as 1948, when Italian ace Luigi Villoresi won the Naples Grand Prix in an MT4. In 1954, a Briggs Cunningham-entered MT4 won the Sebring 12 Hours in the hands of Stirling Moss and Bill Lloyd, by which time OSCAs were already a popular choice in North America. In Europe, the marque scored class victories at Le Mans and the Mille Miglia, and in 1953 Jacques Péron and Raymond Bertramier took overall victory in the Tour de France – one of the most challenging events of the period. As the decade progressed, Porsche and OSCA often went toe-to-toe in the 1500cc class, and it was in response to the German manufacturer’s 550 Spyder that OSCA produced the revised MT4 Tipo Nuovo. By the late 1950s and early ’60s, OSCA had switched its focus to the smaller 750cc class as well as Formula Junior racing, but finances were becoming strained and in 1963 the brothers sold the company to Count Domenico Agusta. OSCA finally closed in 1967. 1956 OSCA MT4 The Classic Motor Hub If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. Fiat Dino – an Italian icon with a Ferrari engine. In March 1967, the Fiat Dino was unveiled to the public at the Geneva Motor Show as a Coupé and a Spider. The two body styles differed significantly in design. This was no surprise, as the Coupé was designed by Bertone and the Spider by Pininfarina. The Coupé had a wheelbase 270 millimeters longer, offering two additional seats in the rear. The Fiat Dino Coupé offered here is the 2.0-liter engine variant. Unlike the 2.4-liter model with a gray cast iron engine block, the slightly smaller engine is made entirely of aluminum and thus places less load on the front axle. This gives the Coupé better handling, and with a high output of 160 hp, it is hardly inferior to the larger displacement variant despite its lower overall weight. These engines were also used in the Ferrari Dino 206 and 246. While current collector’s prices for Ferrari Dino models are approaching half a million Swiss francs, you can enjoy this magnificent engine in the Fiat Dino at a very attractive price. The driving pleasure in this coupé makes every car enthusiast’s heart beat faster. This beautiful Fiat Dino 2000 Coupé, in Giallo Positano with a Blu Scuro interior, has always been meticulously maintained and serviced regularly. Equipped with new shock absorbers and converted to electronic ignition, it is ready for a new owner. The jack and onboard tools are included, as is a complete, custom-made carpet set. 1968 Fiat Dino 2000 Lutziger Classic Cars AG If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series I by Pinin Farina
MARANELLO’S FIRST SERIES-PRODUCED CONVERTIBLE The Pinin Farina-bodied cabriolet that Ferrari introduced at the Geneva Salon in March 1957 was not only a triumph of design, with its elegant rear haunches, covered headlamps, and long centrally ventilated bonnet, but it also marked an auspicious milestone in Maranello history as the company’s first series-produced open-top model. While the first two examples were essentially prototypes that visibly varied, sometimes referred to as the Pinin Farina Spiders, the next 38 cars were generally more uniform in design with several different specific variations. However, despite being the first series-built Ferrari convertible, many experts still consider the Series I Cabriolets to be virtual one-offs, as they were constructed in Pinin Farina’s custom shop rather than on the coachbuilder’s factory floor. Featuring a myriad of customised trim details and differing interior amenities, these cars varied significantly enough from example to example to support the idea that each one was a special bespoke grand touring machine. Each model was crafted by hand, leading to a price tag that doubled that of its 250 GT California Spider sister model. In total, only 40 examples of the first series Pinin Farina Cabriolet were built before the model gave way to a mid-1959 redesign that was intended to further differentiate the Cabriolet from the California Spider. With a competition-derived chassis and the ever-formidable Tipo 128C Colombo-designed short-block V-12, the first-series cabriolets were not only beautiful to behold, but they were capable of exhilarating road performance as well, representing the pinnacle of open-top grand touring in the late-1950s. A JEWEL OF WHITE AND TURQUOISE Newly repainted in white, in homage to its fabulous original colour combination of Bianco over Pelle Turchese—and confirmed by factory data from Ferrari Classiche to retain its matching-numbers chassis, engine, gearbox, and rear axle, this exquisite first-series Cabriolet is one of the most remarkable examples to be publicly offered in memory. According to the combined research of marque expert Marcel Massini and French automotive historian Marc Rabineau, including period registrations and invoices dating to the mid-1960s, chassis 0849 GT is the 23rd example built. Completing assembly in May 1958, the Cabriolet was desirably equipped with covered headlamps and finished in Bianco paint over an interior trimmed in Turchese (turquoise) vaumol leather by Connolly, combining for a particularly striking color scheme. The 250 GT was immediately sold to Enzo Paoli Tacchini of Lodi, Italy, a smaller city south east of Milan, and registered “MI 384430”. Mr. Tacchini kept the Ferrari for a little over two years before selling it to Mario Fano of Milan, and in 1964 Parisian resident Claude Guillaux became the car’s third owner. The Cabriolet passed through the hands of at least three more French owners in the late-1970s before being acquired by Keith Sohl of Woking, England, in the early 1980s. By the late-1980s the Series I Cabriolet was in the possession of a German living in Paris, and it was spotted at several European events during the early 1990s, including the 1990 AvD-Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, and the 1992 FF40 (Ferrari Francorchamps) meeting at Jacques Swaters’ Garage Francorchamps in Belgium. In 1995 the Ferrari quickly passed through a short chain of American-based ownership, ending with Dennis Pobiak of Scottsdale, Arizona, who acquired the car in April 1996. By this time the cosmetic livery had been refreshed to a combination of Rosso paint over a Nero interior. During his 11-year ownership, Mr. Pobiak presented 0849 GT at the 2007 Quail Motorsports Gathering as part of the event’s featured reunion of 250 GT Series I Cabriolets. After more than a decade of dedicated care, Mr. Pobiak sold the Ferrari in 2007 to a noted French collector, commencing a 14-year period of fastidious attention. In 2013 the owner was able to locate the matching-numbers engine, number 0849 GT, which had been installed in the 250 Europa GT number 0367 GT, and whose owner agreed to sell the motor. Four years later the cabriolet was submitted to Carrosserie Lecoq in France for a full restoration, including installation of the matching-numbers engine. While the interior was retrimmed in the unique shade of Turchese, the owner opted to paint the exterior in Nero. On the back of the beautiful restoration, the 250 GT was presented at the inaugural Cavallino Concours d’Elegance held in Modena in July 2021. Acquired by the consignor four months later, the Series I Cabriolet has more recently been treated to a refinish in homage to the original color of Bianco, the unique original colour scheme that graced the car when it left the factory. Furthermore, the Cabriolet has been confirmed by data from Ferrari Classiche to be fitted with the matching-numbers chassis, engine, gearbox, and rear axle, cementing an impressive degree of mechanical authenticity. This superlative Cabriolet Series I is a magnificent example of Maranello’s rare 250 GT-based convertible tourer. It would make a crowning acquisition for any collector of vintage Ferraris or important open post-war sports cars. Equally prepared for the road or the concours field, this spellbinding Prancing Horse promises its next caretaker untold satisfaction. 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series I by Pinin Farina RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1989 Ferrari GTB Turbo
At the 1975 Paris Salon, Ferrari unveiled the Tipo F106 as a replacement for the Dino. Dubbed 308 GTB, the new model was powered by a 3-litre V-8 and proved to be a particularly enduring design—the basic concept remaining in production until 1989. The GTB was joined in 1977 by the open-topped 308 GTS, while in 1980 a smaller-engined version was introduced: the 208. Conceived to circumvent a 38 per cent Italian tax on cars of more than 2 litres, the 208 featured a 1,991 cubic-centimetre derivative of the charismatic V-8. Visually, the model was virtually identical to its 3-litre stablemate. Criticism of the performance led Ferrari to introduce the 208 Turbo in 1982, while in 1985 a facelifted version was launched alongside the 3.2-litre 328. Badged simply GTB or GTS (without the 208 prefix), this final 2-litre model was improved by the addition of an intercooler, while an IHI turbocharger replaced the earlier KKK unit. With a 0-100 km/h time of 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 253 km/h, performance was almost identical to that of the bigger-engined 328. First registered in Perugia, Italy on 10 February 1989, chassis 80099 is beautifully presented in its factory-correct Rosso Corsa over a Nero interior. Imported to France in 2015, this lovely GTB benefitted from a full engine overhaul in March 2022, carried out by Charles Pozzi and costing in excess of €50,000. The car further benefits from the replacement of the ABS system in October of the same year, which cost more than €5,000. The Ferrari is accompanied by numerous invoices, a 2021 engineer’s report, and build data from Ferrari Classiche, in addition to tools and a jack. 1989 Ferrari GTB Turbo RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1967 Jaguar E-Type
A classic car collection might not ever be complete, without a Jaguar taking up space in the garage. None better than an E-Type, or XKE as it's known in the American market. Dubbed by Enzo Ferrari himself as the ‘most beautiful car ever built’ this 1967 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Roadster shows exactly what he meant. Presented in a lovely color combination of Metallic Silver over Black Vinyl interior, this covered headlight example is powered by a 4.2L Inline 6, which boasts a factory rated 265 horsepower engine and power is sent to the wheels via a Getrag 5-Speed manual transmission. A blue printed and balanced engine under prior ownership sports recent upgrades including an HD radiator, performance cams, stainless steel headers and an exhaust system, giving it a lively driving experience. Other performance features include the 3.31 limited-slip differential and 4-wheel ventilated Wilwood performance disc brakes around the car, while the undercarriage has HD swaybars, performance shocks and a recent detail. 15” chrome wire rims are wrapped in Michelin Harmony Radial X tires and secured by two-earned curved knock-off spinners. The brightwork is clear and tightly mounted around the sleek Jaguar body, showing solid gaps and proper mounting hardware to match new gaskets throughout. Within the interior you will find bucket seats trimmed in black vinyl, black carpeting with Jaguar branded rubber floor mats, a three-spoke wooden steering wheel with a Jaguar center horn button, AM/FM cassette player with dual Apline speakers mounted in the back. Smith’s instrumentation is in center view, showing a 160 MPH speedometer next to a tachometer with complementary clock. Mileage shows 6,796, although true mileage is unknown. A black soft top affixes nicely when up, with no rips or tears while the matching vinyl tonneau cover neatly keeps it all in place behind the bucket seats. The rear boot is tidy with tan vinyl trim covering a full matching spare and correct jack kit. Well cared for under current ownership within the Carmel Highlands of Carmel By-The-Sea, California, this Jaguar as always been garage or stored in a climate control facility. Offered now on consignment with a clean California title to complement a complete photo and video gallery. 1967 Jaguar E-Type Mohr Imports, Inc. - 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB Alloy
The 1960s formed a golden decade for Ferrari, during which it not only enjoyed considerable competition success in Formula 1 and sports-car racing, but also produced some of its most coveted road cars. Many marque enthusiasts consider the 275 GTB to be the best of those, and one of the finest Grand Tourers ever built by this revered marque. The Ferrari 275 GTB being offered for sale is a particularly special example of the ‘long nose’ Series 2. It’s thought that fewer than 60 were specified with all-alloy bodywork, and chassis number 08069 is one of them. Completed in late 1965, it was finished in Argento Metallizzato with a Pelle Nera leather interior, and its 3.3-litre V12 engine was fitted with the standard triple Weber carburettors. Ferrari historian Marcel Massini has confirmed that ‘08069’ was supplied new to the well-known dealer Gastone Crepaldi in Milan, who sold it in January 1966 to its first owner, a Signor Zanaboni. It was later acquired by Signor Ghisa, who lived in Trieste in the north-east corner of Italy. By mid-1974, the Ferrari had been exported to the US and was advertised for sale in Road & Track magazine. Its owner at that time was Ronald De Lorenzo, who lived in Youngstown, Ohio, and the advertisement stated that the 275 GTB was still in its original colour, that it was in ‘concours’ condition, and that De Lorenzo was its first US owner. The car was duly sold to Dr Raymond Boniface of Poland, Ohio, and he would end up keeping his treasured Ferrari for 40 years. At some point during his ownership, it was repainted red, and as well as taking it to local shows in Ohio, Dr Boniface also attended larger events such as the Ferrari Club of America’s annual meet at Watkins Glen. Only in 2014 did this 275 GTB change hands again, when it was sold by RM at its Monterey auction. It was then brought to the UK and given a full restoration by marque specialist GTO Engineering. The entire process is painstakingly documented in the car’s history file and included stripping the alloy bodywork to bare metal, at which point it was noted how solid and original this Ferrari was. It was then resprayed in its original colour of Argento Metallizzato and all of the mechanical components were rebuilt to original specification. Such was the quality of the restoration that the Ferrari won its class at the 2015 Salon Privé Concours d’Elegance at Blenheim Palace. Its current owner used the 275 GTB on the 2024 Tour Auto, and this exceptional matching-numbers car is now being offered for sale complete with Ferrari Classiche Certification. From the beautiful Pininfarina styling to the robust and sonorous Colombo-designed V12 engine, the 275 GTB is much sought-after by marque enthusiasts, but this represents an even more special opportunity to acquire a rare alloy-bodied example of this legendary Grand Tourer. 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB Alloy The Classic Motor Hub If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer.
