General History Alfa Romeo, Italian masters of automobile manufacturing, were not always prolific producers of production sports cars. Prior to the Giulia and Giulietta, Alfas were grand, handmade vehicles involving detailed labor and complex fabrication. All this changed when these two brilliantly engineered cars entered the market. With relatively low entry costs, attractive styling, and delightful driving manners, Alfa Romeo secured a promising position in the growing postwar world car market. The Giulia and Giulietta were small, sporty, and charming, yet finely trimmed, giving an air of sophistication young men and women appreciated during prosperous post war years. Both models enjoyed success, with strong sales in Europe and North America, due in part to growing interest in small sporty cars. Among the most desired of these cars were the Veloce equipped Spiders. Initially the 1300cc twin cam in-line four-cylinder engine featured twin Weber carburetors, higher compression ratio, and spirited cam profiles, resulting in improved overall performance. By 1962 the engine was upgraded to 1600, improving both performance and reliability in the new smoother running engine. The Pininfarina bodied Spider would remain in production until 1966, a testimony to the advanced design and sporty styling. These features continue to be highly regarded by collectors and enthusiasts, particularly so for factory original 1965 Spider Veloce models as approximately 1,000 were built in this series with the final improvements reflected in 1965, the last year of production for this series. General Overview According to a 2025 copy of the Alfa Romeo Certificato Di Origine, this Giulia Spider Veloce was built April 7, 1965, and sold April 8,196o to Alfa Romeo, Inc., Newark, USA. The factory colors are noted as red with black interior. Though not much is known about the early years of ownership, this Alfa is accompanied by restoration and service invoices dating back to 1996 with restoration services performed from 1996-1999 by Craft Works, Ltd., Dallas, TX. The restoration covered body, paint, rechroming for trim and bumpers, interior reupholstery, a new top, and comprehensive mechanical restoration for the engine, transmission, brakes and suspension. The restoring owner continued to enjoy the car until 2013 when it was recommissioned mechanically, at that time with 45,603 miles recorded on the service invoice. Additional work continued in 2015, with 45,739 miles, covering electrical, fuel lines, new radiator hoses, oil and filter change, and a carburetor adjustment in 2016. In 2018, the car required further mechanical attention after storage. The service included removing the fuel tank and reconditioning it, and a fluid and filter service checking all systems. In 2022 the starter was rebuilt, a new Duracell AGM battery installed, and the fuel gauge serviced. After nearly 30 years of prior recorded ownership, this Alfa was sold to the current owner who installed four new Pirelli Cinturato 155 HR15 tires, followed by an October 2025 service where the carburetor air flow was balanced, ignition timing verified, the spark plugs were cleaned, and the carburetors adjusted. In preparation for consignment, a compression test was performed returning 1 - 160, 2 – 165, 3 – 165, 4 – 170. General Condition Today this Veloce Spider presents in excellent condition throughout including glossy white paint with excellent coverage and a smooth, glossy finish. The exterior trim is in excellent condition overall including a very nice Alfa Romeo branded central grille flanked by chrome plated front bumpers with correct fitting side openings and trim. Unlike many Spiders of this era the chrome bumpers are properly aligned to the body, parallel to the grille openings with excellent fit and finish. The hood features a raised profile hood scoop which was updated in the last two years of production to allow more room for the slightly taller improved engine. The lighting, bumpers, and various trim and script are in excellent condition, as are the smooth operating original side glass and a replacement windshield. The body panel gaps are consistent showing very good closures and tight fit, including both doors which show excellent part lines and tight closure. Outfitted with correct silver painted steel wheels with polished wheel covers, the wheels wear a set of Pirelli Cinturato tires installed in 2024. The interior is just as impressive as the exterior featuring beautifully trimmed black bucket seats with authentic appearance to the materials, foam padding, correct seat pleating, and a pair of matching seat belts. The door panels and side panels are like new with excellent quality to the finishes while the carpeting is also in excellent condition. The dashboard is gorgeous and beautifully detailed, featuring crystal clear instruments with excellent color and contrast to the dial faces and glass covers. The black dash padding is also like new. A late 1990s model Kenwood AM/FM stereo with auto-reverse cassette is installed along with a pair of Optimus speakers discretely mounted behind the seats in the spare tire storage area, also housing a factory jack and full sized spare tire. The trunk is reflective of the same level of restoration excellence exhibited throughout the car, clean and well-maintained, retaining a matching white inner trunk floor surface, a black rubber mat, and a Duracell AGM battery recessed into the rear inner fender area. The convertible top is easily raised and lowered into place and latched at the windshield header. The canvas convertible top appears new, here too with excellent fit and finish, and a soft clear plastic window.
Under the hood, the engine bay offers correct presentation reflective of original specifications including a correct diamond-tufted silver hood insulation pad and an Alfa Romeo specifications plate. Nicely detailed and worthy of Alfa Romeo club concours presentation, the 1,600cc twin cam engine is correctly restored including twin dual throat side draft 48 Weber carburetors, a correct cast alloy airbox, and a correctly finished alloy twin cam cover. Additional details include a blue washer fluid bag, correct hoses and clamps, correct firewall stampings, engine decals, and proper finishes to the various engine components. The undercarriage completes the high quality restoration, offering excellent finishes including correct alloy engine and gearbox castings, correct axle limit straps on the rear axle, and correctly finished suspension and brake components. The car starts, stops, runs, and drives very capably as evidenced in the driving video shown in the gallery. Brakes and suspension are very well balanced, including a smooth operating gearbox with excellent synchros. Driving manners are excellent, benefiting from the extra power provided by the 1,600cc engine in the final two years of production. Items Included with the Car The car is accompanied by a copy of the Alfa Romeo Certificato Di Origine, copies of restoration invoices under long-term prior ownership, selected service invoices under current ownership, and a factory jack mounted in the storage area behind the seats.
