TWO CHAMPIONS IN TWO YEARS On 17 June 1958, chassis 0933 GT was sold new to two-time Italian National Road Racing Champion Casimiro “Miro” Toselli of Turin, a wealthy gentleman-driver more skilled than most Ferrari customers. Chassis 0933 GT is recorded as one of three TdF examples he drove in competition from 1957 through 1960. Chassis 0933 GT’s sole outright victory with its second champion-owner came on 16 August, when Marcotulli completed the 128-kilometer Gran Premio de Maracaibo in under 52 minutes. Chassis 0933 GT competed in further endurance races between Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela, and in his last recorded race at the Caracas-to-Bogota rally, Tosa famously shared driving duties with his wife Franca. In early 1961, Lino Fayen purchased the car from Tosa and brought it back to France from Venezuela, likely intending to sell it to a European privateer. However, 0933 GT's promising competitive future was abruptly interrupted by a dispute between Fayen and the French tax authorities. Tax agents seized the car—still carrying its Venezuelan registration plates—in a parking lot at Paris Orly Airport. HALLOWED HALLS AND RECENT LIFE The seizure advertently saved 0933 GT from the possibility of another several seasons in competition and preserved its originality as the car remained in storage for five years, until offered at a customs auction in October 1966 where it was purchased by one Christian d’Epenoux. Renowned Ferrari collector Pierre Bardinon quickly pried chassis 0933 GT from his hands and had the car registered as “5799GZ78” and refinished in Rosso to fit the famous aesthetic of his private Mas du Clos Ferrari museum in Aubusson, France. From 1975 through 1977, Comte Frederic Chandon de Briailles of Moët et Chandon fame briefly enjoyed ownership of chassis 0933 GT, before Bardinon bought it back and retained it in his incredible collection for another six years. Interceding owners of note from 1983 to the present include three-time Le Mans competitor Dominique Bardini, as well as André Binda and noted tifoso Michel Seydoux. From 1997 through 2001, 0933 GT was cosmetically refinished in its original Oro Chiaro and treated to a mechanical restoration by UK-based specialists Terry Hoyle Racing Engineers. In 2004, the car’s original Rosso Bordeaux leather upholstery was removed and preserved and Cognac leather hides were installed. This TdF’s only setback during its racing career was the expiration of its original 3.0-liter engine block—quite a common occurrence for Ferrari competition cars—having likely developed issues during Marcotulli’s ownership. The engine block currently fitted to the car is an unstamped correct-type unit believed to be a period factory replacement installed in Caracas by Lino Fayen’s dealership staff. The 365 GT4 BB was the first mid-engined, 12-cylinder road car from the Maranello marque to wear a Ferrari badge. A rival to Lamborghini’s Countach, it lasted for three years before the 512 BB replacement arrived in 1976 with an enlarged 360 brake horsepower, carburettor-fed, 4,943-cc flat-12—related to the engine in Niki Lauda’s contemporary Formula 1 racer—that propelled the model to a 188 mph top speed. The first owner of chassis 20825 initially specified a 365 GT4 BB finished in Argento Auteuil, placing an order in January 1976. With the new model then announced at that year’s Paris Salon, the request was soon amended to a 512 BB in Verde Medio (a particularly rare colour with only five examples, including the later BBi) over a Beige Connolly leather interior. Completed on 7 February the following year, this notably early example of a 512 BB was delivered new to UK importer Maranello Concessionaires of Egham, Surrey, and distributed through the main dealer, Maltin Car Concessionaires of Henley, Oxfordshire. Of the 929-strong production run of 512 BBs, only 101 were configured in right-hand-drive. This car was registered on 19 March 1977 to Mr N F Boutros, who retained chassis 20825 for seven years. A second owner exported the car to New Zealand in the mid-1980s before a third keeper eventually moved it to Japan in 2004. A decade later, this 512 BB returned to the UK, having been purchased by the Ferrari Centre of Maidstone for a complete, three-year restoration. The consigning owner purchased chassis 20825 from the Ferrari Centre (later renamed Kent High Performance Cars) in July 2016, two months later gaining certification from Ferrari Classiche as the 512 BB was recognised for retaining its matching-numbers body, chassis, engine, and gearbox. Testament to its current finish in current Rosso over Pelle Beige, the car has won numerous concours awards. Few cars epitomise the mantra of ‘less is more’ quite so effectively as the Alpine A110, and this rare early survivor is being offered for sale in exceptional condition following an extensive restoration. A 1990 letter from Société des Automobiles Alpine Renault confirms that chassis 3222 left the factory on 23 May 1965. Although A110s were also built in Spain, Bulgaria, Brazil and Mexico, this particular car was produced by Alpine in its hometown of Dieppe in northern France. The A110 was bought into the UK in 1984 via the Lenham Motor Company by an enthusiast owner whose car-owning past also included a Formula Junior Cooper T52, an Ausper Formula 3 car and the unique Marina Rolls-Royce sports-racer. A few years later, some extensive recommissioning work was carried out that included an engine rebuild, and the owner would end up keeping the car for well over 20 years. More recently, the decision was taken to treat the Alpine to a thorough body-off restoration. The important milestones are noted in the car’s history file, and include an engine rebuild in 2017, a retrim and carburettor rebuild in 2018, and rewiring and repainting in 2020 – the same year in which 34 pieces of brightwork were professionally rechromed. Further paintwork was carried out in early 2021 and, having spent time in Alpine Blue, the car is now once again beautifully presented in its original shade of Ivory. The painstaking restoration was finally completed in summer 2024, and the care and attention with which it was carried out is evident throughout the car. Porsche Stuttgart is registered as the first owner and the car was probably used as a demonstration or press car. It comes from the third owner and has been in the last ownership since 1982, a whopping 42 years. Or in a traffic jam during rush hour in the autumn rain? In the vast majority of cases, these thoroughbred Italian sports cars were driven under the very best conditions from the very first kilometer, never on salt roads in winter, never in the stress of everyday life. Most of the time, all inspections were carried out on time, because even in the regulars' table, it was becoming more and more common to hear that, for example, a neglected timing belt could result in a horrendously expensive engine overhaul that would hit any wallet hard. In addition to the regular exercise of such hot-blooded cars, regular maintenance is also important so that these automobiles convey to us all what makes them special - tamed racing cars with precision mechanics that are as fascinating as they are delicate, revving multi-cylinder high-performance engines, open gearshifts with gears that click into place like a signal box... You all know what I mean. Ferrari is pure fascination and a purely emotional, irrational matter of the heart. The global fan community is therefore committed to it, cheers for their brand at every Formula 1 race and celebrates every new model that is introduced accordingly. Maybe we should start with this: Despite - or perhaps because of - the exceptionally well-preserved condition, an incredible € 57,000.00 was invested in this example over the last 11 years so that it would not be exposed when assessed by classicData specialists: result grade 1-, market value € 125,000. In our view, however, the time factor is the far more important point. All of the components that make up such a vehicle are not designed and developed to last for decades. For example, every seal, regardless of material and quality, ages, becomes brittle, hard and therefore leaks. It doesn't matter whether it got old while standing or driving during this aging process. It just gets old... and the same goes for joints, cable sheaths, switches and many other components. Every car manufacturer wants to sell cars, both today and in many decades to come, which is why they build solid (not to be confused with immortal!) cars in the best case scenario, which age over the course of their use and will therefore be replaced at some point. So if a Ferrari is almost 40 years old in front of us, it has basically already had 2-3 car lives behind it. We have Luca Cordero di Montezemolo to thank for the existence of the Ferrari 550 Maranello, arguably among the most beautiful and best-driving modern-era Prancing Horses of them all. You see, in 1996, after 23 years of mid-engined twelve-cylinder flagship Ferraris, he quite rightly pointed out that a front-engined Gran Turismo – built in the same vein as the marque’s greatest 1960s berlinettas such as the 250 and the ‘Daytona’ – would prove more practical for customers looking to actually use their cars. And he was absolutely right. Pininfarina’s Lorenzo Ramaciotti was employed to style the new car. Ferrari encouraged the history-steeped design studio to channel its greatest models of yesteryear. The prominent 250 GT SWB-like bonnet scoop, 275 GTB-inspired gills aft of the front wheels and 365 GTB/4-esque rear end were certainly not implemented by accident. Needless to say, the leather-festooned cabin was similarly sumptuous and well-equipped. “The 480bhp 5.5-litre V12 is nothing short of a masterpiece, delivering unctuous, unwavering power and torque right through the rev range.” As exquisite as the Ferrari 550 Maranello is to look at, it is – amazingly – even better to drive. The taught, dynamic and genuinely exploitable handling defies the size and weight of the car. The open-gate gearbox is every bit as good to operate as you’d imagine. And the 480bhp 5.5-litre V12 is nothing short of a masterpiece, delivering unctuous, unwavering power and torque right through the rev range. Naturally, it sings a very sweet song, too. Chassis no. 113266 The immaculate right-hand-drive Ferrari 550 Maranello presented here – chassis number 113266 – was delivered new to the United Kingdom on 12 September 1998, via the Loughborough Ferrari concessionaire Graypaul. The striking specification was nothing if not bold. Traditional Rosso Corsa paintwork with an interior trimmed entirely in Beige, including the steering wheel, dashboard, A pillars and roof, all of which were optional extras. Darker Castoro carpets and Rosso stitching provide a subtle contrast to the enticing swathe of beige. There are two key strands to this Ferrari’s appeal: the condition and the service history. Both are superb and a testament to the care and diligence of the car’s short list of owners. There are 15 recorded stamps from official Ferrari dealers here in the UK – so many, in fact, that a second Ferrari service book was sourced to log the most recent maintenance. Crucially, the service history authenticates the mere 23,850 miles that show on the car’s odometer. And that mileage is commensurate with the overall condition of chassis 113266, which is nothing short of exceptional. Save for a handful of tiny stone chips on the leading edge of the bonnet, the paintwork is flawless. Beneath the bonnet the engine bay is remarkably clean, with all its factory stickers present and intact. Inside, the blemish-free Beige leather upholstery has stood the test of time, retaining that sumptuous gloss.
