Introduced in February of 1965, the Alfa Romeo GTA rightfully earned high praise in period and has since become a legendary part of motorsports history. Although it appears visually similar to the standard Giulia GT, the GTA (Gran Tourismo Alleggerita or ‘lightened’) was significantly re-engineered, transforming the pleasant and affordable GT into a spectacular giant-beating racecar. Even more potent still was the GTAm, which pushed the sporting regulations of the late 1960s and early 1970s yet further with riveted fiberglass wheel arches, wider wheels, and aggressively-cammed engines producing 240 horsepower. There are differing schools of thought about the "Am" moniker, neither having ever been officially confirmed by Alfa Romeo: GT Alesaggio Maggiorato (Italian: increased bore) GT Alleggerita Modificata (Italian: lightened modified) As race cars, Alfa Romeo specific tuner Autodelta built 1750 GTAms for both the works team and customer teams, but a few were constructed by private workshops, bringing the total of GTAms extant in period to approximately 40. The cars had a full steel body modified with aluminum and plastic parts. Today, although many have had difficult histories, they are generally regarded as the most valuable and visually striking of the Alfa Romeo 105 chassis series. According to The Certificate of Origin and Alfa Romeo Museo Storico, this particular example was produced in early 1974 for the Italian market as a silver over brown interior 1300 GT Junior. While little can be known about its early history, it was purchased from Greece in project form in 2018 by its current owner, and imported in August of that same year, already fitted with the currently installed 1750cc engine. In an effort to complete the car to a pleasing level of cosmetic presentation and mechanical road readiness, the current owner engaged Alfa Romeo experts Dave Vegher of Veloce West and Frank Zucchi Restorations to pick up where the previous owner had left off. Between 2018 and 2020 the following work was performed at considerable expense: By Dave Vegher: Cylinder head rebuild to include New valves with larger intakes, and new valve seals Cut valve seats Port and resurface head Pressure check By Frank Zucchi: Install new adjustable A-arms Source from Alfaholics and install GTAm-look alloy wheels Mount Toyo Proxy 225 50 R15 RA1 tires Source and install new Alfaholics GTAR steering wheel and boss assembly Rebuild rear axle assembly with new bearings and seals Source and install new Weber carburetors, modify airbox, add support, and tune carbs. Replace radiator Install new emergency brake cable Rebuild brake calipers Replace brake rotors Make new dash wiring harness Install USB port Install new gauges Install new headlights Install new brake servo Install new exhaust Replace fuel pump Make rear seat brackets Install cylinder head with new head gasket Ceramic re-seal engine block Replace wheel studs Rewire horn button Rewire alternator Perform corrosion repair to rear floor Rebuild drive shaft Adjust steering stops for new wider wheels Source and install new interior door and window crank handles Repaint rear fender flares Polish car The above work resulted in a strong running example with a very good vintage racecar level cosmetic presentation. The car has a competition-inspired stance with an aggressive appearance. The paint is good, but is not without superficial flaws on many panels, so as not to limit enjoyment to enjoyment to concours gatherings. Panel fit does show some variance along shut lines. The bumpers have long since been discarded, and the wider wheels, boldly riveted fenders, and outside fuel filler cap give the impression this GTAm is on its way to compete in the Targa Florio. The interior has been comprehensively re-trimmed in a diamond-stitched pattern, and the upholstery is generally very nice. Aftermarket bucket seats have been installed in place of the less sporting stock units, and 4-point belts in red replace the originals. A trio of gauges have been added to the lower center console, and this is where the functioning oil pressure gauge can be observed. An aluminum shift knob replaces the black plastic piece which would have been fitted when new. The engine bay is, displaying evidence of the comprehensive work performed, and is generally stock in appearance. The valve cover is attractively polished and an already installed catch bottle means this GTAm tribute is one step closer to tech inspection for the next owner's first track day. The underside displays some signs of age and use. There are some minor areas of metal perforation, mainly behind the splash areas of the front wheels, but generally speaking the underside is solid and structurally sound. While the visual presentation is competition inspired, instruction was given to master Alfa Romeo engine builder Dave Vegher to keep this GTAm street-friendly. As such, it is surprisingly docile in city traffic with a mellow power band and an easy to engage clutch. The transmission ratios remain stock, such that highway driving does not wind-out the 1750cc engine. The car is not without rattles and squeaks over bumps, just as would be the case with one of the 40 highly valuable original GTAms. The car is offered with records for work performed and Certificate of Origin in digital format. With significant work performed by some of the best names on the West Coast, this stunning example is ready for its next lucky custodian who can enjoy it as is on rallies or track days, or take to the next level of cosmetic preparation. 1974 Alfa Romeo GTAm Tribute Fantasy Junction If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo 2
In 1974 a new era began at Porsche. At the same time as BMW and its 2002 Turbo, the first production 911 with a turbocharged engine appeared. Its name: 911 "Turbo", or "930" for those who know it well. But unlike the BMW, which remained without descendants, the Porsche 911 Turbo was to be the initiator of a great lineage. 50 years later, let's take a look at this true automotive legend. The brand has always offered its customers a special series of race-ready models, and the 911 has repeatedly confirmed this rule. The 911 Turbo was first presented as a prototype at the Paris Motor Show in September 1973 as a vehicle that could be produced in small series for FIA Group 5 homologation. In the meantime, a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR Turbo with almost 500 horsepower (for 2.1 litres of engine capacity!) was entered at Le Mans and produced encouraging results, finishing 2nd in 1974. This performance encouraged Porsche to continue its research into the use of turbocharging and it was a real event when the 911 Turbo road car was presented in Paris in its almost final form a few months later. Instantly, it was love at first sight for many enthusiasts and the beginning of a long and beautiful love story. The factory designation "930" corresponding to the engine's nomenclature quickly became the baptismal name of the turbocharged 911 among Porsche enthusiasts, even though its official commercial name has always been "Turbo" and "Carrera Turbo" in the USA. Originally, it was only planned to produce the 500 cars required for FIA Group 5 homologation, given the economic context of the oil crisis, which was not very favorable to fuel-guzzlers. However, production of the famous 911 Turbo began in February 1975, just as France had imposed motorway speed limits. But despite this, the 911 Turbo aroused such interest and was such an exceptional event that orders quickly flowed in beyond the expected sales figures. In view of the enthusiasm, production was increased the following year. Externally, the 930 retained the general appearance of the 911s, but was distinguished primarily by its large, prominent rear spoiler, which, in combination with the front spoiler, provided superior downforce at higher speeds. At first glance, the Porsche 930 impresses, but then it seduces, especially with its swollen rear wings. The tracks of the Turbo are widened by 60 mm in front and 120 mm in back. The whole thing has an effect and many will fall in love with these wide and sexy hips which will later become a very popular option making up the famous "Turbo-Look". As was the case with the 1974 911 Carrera RS 3.0, the Porsche 911 Turbo is equipped with black Fuchs wheels with polished rims, 7 inches at the front and 8 inches at the rear as standard. The tires are generously sized for the time. For the '76 model year, several other modifications were made to the increasingly successful 930. Matte black stickers on the front of the rear wings now protect them from stone chips. Less visible, but very important, is the zinc electrolysis of the bodywork which allows Porsche to guarantee the 930 against corrosion for 6 years. Inside, apart from the specific 3-spoke steering wheel, the interior of the 911 Turbo is strictly identical to that of a Carrera. It is surprising that there is no turbo pressure gauge until the '77 model year. But surprisingly, Porsche wanted to position its new sports car in a different niche than a pure sports car, stripped down to the bare essentials like the Carrera RS 2.7L. The standard equipment is even more complete than at the time of the presentation and very luxurious for the time: electric windows, air conditioning, leather seats, tinted windows, not to mention headlight washers - a world first! -, rear windscreen wiper, front fog lamps, etc... Note also that among the options available on the 930 were front seat heaters, a locking differential, a short shifter kit, electrically adjustable sports seats and a tinted windscreen. Yet the 930 is a true sports car. And to be convinced of this, you have to taste what's under its imposing engine bonnet! Intended as a racing car, the leading model of the 911 series was entirely focused on power and would set new standards. To understand the choice of engine for the Porsche 930, one must remember that the sports regulations of the time imposed a factor of 1.4 on the displacement of turbocharged engines to compensate for their mechanical advantage over naturally aspirated engines. Therefore, a displacement of 3L corresponded to 4.2L, the maximum allowed at the time, with a weight limit of 1210 Kg. Designed for competition, the Flat 6 of the 930, type 930/50, is therefore derived from the Carrera RS 3 litres. The displacement is 2994 cm3 (bore 95 mm, stroke 70.4 mm) and the engine is fed by a Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical injection and a KKK type 3LDZ turbocharger, blowing at 0.8 bar. The compression ratio is lowered to 6.5:1. Porsche also uses advanced technologies designed to achieve high power output without affecting engine reliability. The cylinder walls are covered with Nikasil, the pistons are made of forged alloy and the crankcase is made of aluminum. The 6-cylinder flat engine from Porsche develops 260 hp at 5500 rpm and 343 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. Available in the USA, the 930 will however only deliver 245 hp (engine type 930/51), i.e. 15 hp less than the European version for pollution control reasons. But the torque is such that it is quite sufficient! With its first-class performance, the Porsche 930 is on a par with the best sports cars of the time, such as the Ferrari 512 BB. It takes only 5.5 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h, while its top speed exceeds 250 km/h. Despite its racing characteristics, the Turbo 911 is surprisingly well suited for everyday use. In this area, Porsche also manages to reconcile two obvious contradictions. In the city, the Turbo drives like an ordinary 911, the flexibility of the 3.0L engine being very appreciable here. Once on the road, you have to anticipate the dual personality of a car whose old-style turbo management was, moreover, deliberately "brutal" at the time. Clearly, nothing was done to smooth out the engine's character! And indeed, once past 3500 rpm, the turbine is triggered in "all or nothing" mode. The 6-cylinder Porsche 930 then propels you into another dimension, with a memorable kick in the ass! Your back sinks into the leather seat and you become fully aware of the 930 Turbo's lightning acceleration! Just imagine what a shock this was for the automotive world at the time, which was simultaneously discovering turbocharging and the arrival on the market of a sports car capable of offering sensations previously unknown outside the world of competition. Given the engine's torque, the 4-speed gearbox seemed to be sufficient. The 1st gear pushes you up to 80 km/h on the approach to the red zone (located at 6900 rpm), the 2nd to 135 and the 3rd already makes you a jailbird, at 200 km/h. You will then go and explain to Mr. the "gendarme" that you had not yet shifted in 4th gear... he might appreciate it. Just imagine that the 4th takes you to 250 km/h... In a word, the Porsche 930 is... sporty! And how good it is! This invigorating return to the source reminds us how much current productions are sometimes far too sanitized. For many drivers, the 911 Turbo was the ultimate sports car. With all its exceptional features, it is now a true phenomenon and a historical monument of the automobile. A mythical vehicle whose reputation as a wild beast has greatly contributed to the aura it still enjoys in the hearts of all enthusiasts. This example was ordered on 27 February 1976, specified in Schwarz over Braunbeige leather with an electric sunroof, and intended for California, according to the accompanying factory build sheet. Chassis number 00413 was reportedly retained by its first owner for 23 years before being sold locally in 1999. It was then reportedly sold to a third Californian owner in 2002, before being exported to Norway in 2007 and finding a home with another Norwegian four years later. In 2015, it passed into the hands of the previous owner and was imported to Denmark, where later that year it underwent a body repaint in black. A certificate of authenticity from Porsche confirms that this car has retained its chassis and engine. Beautifully presented in its original configuration, this first generation Turbo Carrera is a fine example of an iconic model that marked both the development of the 911 and the evolution of the supercar. 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Historic Cars If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1992 Lancia Delta Integrale Evoluzione
Just before this Lancia was exported to the United States, it received an engine tuning and gearshift upgrade done by Karlofer. Lancia motor cars have not been sold in the United States since 1982, and even then, the American understanding of the brand was a far cry from its extraordinary performance pedigree in Europe. Perhaps it's even ironic that this U.S. departure took place in the same year as Lancia's introduction of the 037 model for competition in Group B of the FIA World Rally Championship-a now-legendary "golden era" of all-out international rally racing, with limited regulation, blindingly fast cars, daring drivers and even more daring fans. The 037 ultimately begat the Lancia Delta S4, but with more speed came more danger, and by 1987 Group B was over as fast as it had begun. The Group A series came in its place, and with it, a homologation requirement of 5,000 road cars, for which Lancia was ideally positioned. Its Delta family hatchback model had steadily evolved in performance since its 1979 introduction, developing into the HF and HF Turbo and ultimately the advent of four-wheel drive. By 1989, the facelifted Delta HF Integrale 16-valve was a far-cry from its origins as a hum-drum Italian grocery-getter and the introduction of the "Evoluzione" iteration in 1991 was utterly earth shattering. A turbo-charged, two-liter Lancia engine produced 210 horsepower at 5,700 rpm, fed by a highly responsive Garrett T3 turbo, an efficient intercooler, larger exhaust system, improved steering, strengthened suspension, two-piston Brembo brakes in front, and much more. Stylistically, the wider wheels and tires, raised bonnet, aggressively flared fenders, and three-position rear-wing made for a downright menacing sports car, the likes of which any Porsche driver on an Alpine pass would be unhappy to see in his rearview mirror...and then, very likely, through his windshield. Whether it was on the tarmac in Monte Carlo, the snow and ice of Scandinavia, or the unpaved roads in Kenya, the Lancia Delta Integrale was absolutely dominant, winning the Group A Constructors Championship five years running-1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, and 1992. With that fifth victory, Lancia celebrated its unprecedented achievement with the introduction of a limited edition Delta Integrale Evoluzione 16V "Martini 5." Only 400 examples were built, of which the car presented here is serial number 131. Like all Martini 5 cars, it is liveried with the iconic Martini stripes running down each side, commemorative "World Rally Champion" badging, Recaro seats trimmed in dark grey Alcantara with red stitching, and red seat belts. With only 2,500 kilometers indicated on the odometer at the time of cataloguing, this Martini 5 is almost certainly one of the very best presented and prepared examples in the world. A recent inspection by our specialists confirmed the originality of the paint throughout and the car's superior cosmetic presentation. Offered on behalf of a distinguished private collection, the car was acquired directly from Karlhofer in Germany, the preeminent name in Delta Integrale outfitting. At the time of its acquisition and in advance of export to the United States, the car was equipped by Karlhofer with an engine tuning and gearshift upgrade at a cost of nearly 4,000 Euro. The Lancia Delta Integrale Evoluzione 16V is truly the pinnacle capstone on the decade-long development of one of rally racing's greatest and most iconic cars. The limited edition "Martini 5" celebrates not only this development but the extraordinary achievement of five victorious seasons. There are truly very few cars as thrilling to drive as this, particularly such a low-mileage, time-capsule example. - 1967 Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada Alloy
At the 1963 Turin Motor Show, the Iso Rivolta company of Milanese industrialist Renzo Rivolta debuted two Giugiaro-designed variants of their new Grifo sportscar. The Grifo A3/L was on the Bertone stand, while the A3/C debuted on Iso’s stand; only the latter was built by Giotto Bizzarrini’s consultancy in Livorno. Despite significant differences, both variants sported Giugiaro-designed coachwork, and they synergistically presented a stunning combination of Italian styling, race-developed underpinnings, and American V-8 power. Convinced that the A3/C’s incredibly low, slippery profile and front-mid-mounted 5.3-litre V-8 engine configuration could translate into motorsports success, for the next 18 months Bizzarrini made the A3/C under agreement with Iso. The car neared 305 km/h on the Mulsanne Straight in 1965, and the Bizzarrini-built Grifos won the GT class at Le Mans in 1964 and, again, in 1965. Bizzarrini and Iso subsequently struck a compromise wherein Bizzarrini would continue to build the Grifo under his own name as the 5300 GT in both “Strada” roadgoing form, and “Corsa” variants for racing. While the Bizzarrini Strada is ostensibly a road car, its specifications read like those of an all-out competition car, with lightweight aluminum bodywork, a fabricated platform chassis, and a semi-monocoque body riveted to the frame. This advanced chassis, combined with near-perfect weight distribution which utilised lessons gleaned from Bizzarrini’s previous work on Ferrari’s 250 GTO, resulted in outstanding performance and incredible handling. Output of the Strada’s Chevrolet V-8 engine ranged between 350 and 420 horsepower, providing a claimed top speed of up to 290 km/h. And at an original price point nearing $10,500, the Strada’s performance was simply unrivaled, provided one could even find an example for sale. Rarer—and faster—than any contemporary roadgoing production model from competing Italian marques, the Bizzarrini 5300 Strada GT is a true paradigm of design and performance. This 5300 GT Strada, number 264, is believed to have been delivered new to the United States, during September 1967, and is one of the 86 alloy-bodied examples completed by Bizzarrini. According to information compiled by the Iso-Bizzarrini Owners Club, as well as the Bizzarrini Registry, chassis 0264 remained in the United States until 1990, when it was imported to the United Kingdom and submitted to its first recorded restoration. After passing through a chain of owners across England and continental Europe between 1998 and 2007, chassis 0264 finally settled down within the careful ownership of a noted Italian collector in 2008. Under its most recent previous owner, the car was inspected by marque expert Jack Koobs de Hartog in the UK during September 2015, and in November 2016, the car was purchased by the consignor, at which time it still wore its prior restoration. Chassis 0264 was subsequently submitted to Rebellion Motors of Lausanne, Switzerland during August 2017 for the start of a total, exhaustive, multi-year restoration which would see the car’s alloy body entirely stripped down to bare metal, and fastidiously corrected. This Strada’s chassis also proved to be in relatively aged condition, and so Rebellion Motors with Carrosserie Challenge (also of Lausanne) masterfully repaired and, where required, recreated, and welded in new body panels and chassis reinforcements. In all, this exacting approach likely relieved this Strada of some of its more characterful artifacts of Bizzarrini’s production line—in essence producing a “better than new” finish. A compendium of invoices (on file) illustrate all work completed in great detail, and in total they represent more than 246,000 CHF lavished upon this incredibly sought-after Anglo-Italian hybrid. As presented today, chassis 0264 is desirably equipped with power windows, triple-vane wing vents, Talbot mirrors, and chrome 17-inch Borrani wire wheels. Sparingly used since the completion of its restoration, chassis 0264 retains many superb and correct details throughout. Additionally, its sale is accompanied by two complete, correct-type Chevrolet 5.3-litre engines, one of which has been partially rebuilt by Oldtimer Center Ostschweiz in St. Margrethen. Eminently presentable for the most prestigious concours and classic racing events, this is an exceptional gran turismo car in all respects. Perhaps Giotto Bizzarrini, the “Father of the 250 GTO,” said it best: “I started with the idea of the Ferrari GTO and set about trying to improve on it.” 1967 Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada Alloy RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. Perhaps Giotto Bizzarrini, the “Father of the 250 GTO,” said it best: “I started with the idea of the Ferrari GTO and set about trying to improve on it.” Other Cars from RM Sotheby's 1954-Fiat-8V-Berlinetta-Series-II-01.webp 1954-Fiat-8V-Berlinetta-Series-II-02.webp 1954-Fiat-8V-Berlinetta-Series-II-20.webp 1954-Fiat-8V-Berlinetta-Series-II-01.webp 1/20 1954 Fiat 8V Berlinetta Series II RM Sotheby's Germany 1965-Shelby-289-Cobra-01.webp 1965-Shelby-289-Cobra-02.webp 1965-Shelby-289-Cobra-15.webp 1965-Shelby-289-Cobra-01.webp 1/15 1965 Shelby 289 Cobra RM Sotheby's United States 1991-Porsche-911-Reimagined-by-Singer-01.webp 1991-Porsche-911-Reimagined-by-Singer-02.webp 1991-Porsche-911-Reimagined-by-Singer-15.webp 1991-Porsche-911-Reimagined-by-Singer-01.webp 1/15 1991 Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer RM Sotheby's United Kingdom Last Featured Cars
- 1959 Jaguar Lister Costin
The glorious result of a collaboration between the successful ‘garagista’ Brian Lister and the expert aerodynamicist Frank Costin, the Lister Costin Jaguar is among the most beautiful 1950s sports-racing cars ever built. You see, while the car the Costin replaced, the so-called ‘Knobbly’, was extremely successful, its aerodynamic inefficiency meant it was never going to maintain its competitiveness in the face of a rapidly evolving technological landscape. Costin’s sleek wind-cheating alloy body combined with the proven tubular chassis and Jaguar six-cylinder drivetrain resulted in a car that could exceed more than 180mph – an extraordinary speed for the time. Only 12 Lister Costins were built, collectively earning success at the world’s greatest motor races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Sussex Trophy at Goodwood, Nürburgring 1,000KMs and Road America 500. And they were raced by the period most famous drivers, including Stirling Moss and Jim Clark. Today, the Lister Costin remains an extremely effective racing car in historic motorsport, with eligibility in a wide range of events around the world. Given that great period Lister Costins fetch seven figures in today’s discerning market, the small number of facsimiles built to the exact design and specification of those originals are seriously appealing to those wishing to mix it at the sharp end of the historic racing scene. Chassis number ‘BHL 183S’ is one such example. Chassis number BHL 183S In the lofty world of 1950s and 1960s competition Jaguars, there’s a family in the United Kingdom whose name resonates especially strongly and that’s the Pearsons. Founded by John Pearson in the early 1960s, Pearsons Engineering initially focused on keeping C-type and D-type Jaguars and Jaguar-powered Listers in rude health. In more recent years, the company – now run by John’s son Gary – has forged a strong reputation maintaining and restoring the very same cars and preparing them to the Nth degree for historic motorsport. In 2016, Pearsons Engineering set about building a new Lister Costin Jaguar, ensuring every last detail was identical to those original examples from the 1950s. The car was constructed to the exact 1959 technical specifications as the original, with Pearsons Engineering’s team of engineers painstakingly building the chassis and the body over the course of 18 months, referencing archive drawings and using period-correct techniques. Power is derived from a Crosthwaite & Gardiner-built dry-sump six-cylinder Jaguar engine producing 370bhp. Pearsons’ own wide-angle cylinder head and camshafts ensure it is among the most competitive Lister Costin Jaguars on today’s historic racing grid. Upon completion of the exhaustive project in September of 2016, this car was inspected by the Lister Motor Company and confirmed to be to ‘Lister Ex-Works Specification’. It was awarded ‘Sanction II’ status and duly assigned an historic ‘BHL’ chassis number, in this case ‘BHL 183S’. Being able to officially carry the Lister name and with this official ‘Sanction II’ status, ‘BHL 183S’ is eligible to compete at a wide variety of different historic motorsport events, including the Le Mans Classic and the Goodwood Members’ Meeting. Indeed, this beautifully elegant Lister has proven to be an extremely quick historic sports-racing car, particularly in the fiercely competitive events organised by Motor Racing Legends. At the Le Mans Classic in 2018, Gary Pearson and Andrew Smith put this Lister on pole position in Plateau 3. In 2021, Max Girardo and James Cottingham won the three-hour Royal Automobile Club Pall Mall Cup at Silverstone in emphatic fashion. And the pair followed that up in the same race in 2022, this time held at Donington Park, with class victory. On the small number of occasions it has been raced, ‘BHL 183S’ has always been prepared, entered and subsequently maintained by Pearsons Engineering, regardless of expense. Corresponding invoices on file attest to that. As such, the Lister is in overall excellent condition, with only a smattering of small stone chips on the nose commensurate with the longer-distance races in which it competed and small spidering to the paintwork on the bonnet contours closest to the engine. This stunning Lister Costin is now absolutely ready to race and more than capable of mixing it at the front of any of the many historic motorsport grids for which it’s eligible around Europe and beyond. - 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A by Sindelfingen
Few automobiles of the Classic Era could compare in prestige, grandeur, and performance to the Mercedes-Benz 540 K, inarguably one of the finest and most beautiful cars ever to come from Stuttgart. Engineered by Hans Nibel, the 540 K boasted a pushrod overhead-valve inline eight-cylinder engine, displacing 5,401 cubic centimeters and equipped with a double-vane Roots-type supercharger. When engaged at full throttle, the supercharger boosted horsepower to 180, enabling most any style to reach 100 mph. Chassis number 130945 is a very special car. As a relatively early example of the 540 K, it was thus delivered with the so-called first-series Cabriolet A body. One of the most attractive styles on the 540 K, the first-series Cabriolet A was essentially a copy of that used on the 500 K, to its benefit; it features the long, flowing open fenders that visually emphasize the power lurking between them, as well as double rear-mounted spares that further add an appearance of length and grace, and an extremely low windshield. The early 540 K Cabriolet A clearly recalls the lines of the great SSKs in a way that few other bodies do, and thus these are among the most desirable designs on this great chassis. The Daimler-Benz kommission sheet, a copy of which is on file, shows that chassis number 130945 was indeed delivered as a Cabriolet A, with the client of record having been Mrs. Maria Leyder of Stuttgart. Like many 540 Ks, the car eventually made its way to the United States in the post-war era, and was purchased, likely in the 1950s, by Don Rounds of Denver, Colorado. President of the Don M. Rounds Drilling Company, he was an internationally known oil driller and wildcatter, credited by his obituary as “one of the important oil figures who led the Rocky Mountain oil boom following World War II.” He also had fine taste in cars, as he also possessed a Duesenberg Model J in the same era. Following Mr. Rounds’s passing in 1969, the 540 K was offered by his estate; a description of the car, from the records of historian Jonathan Sierakowski and included in the file, notes that it had been mechanically restored but was likely still wearing its original finishes, with accompanying photographs showing it in apparently very good and intact condition. It was sold from the estate in 1970 to engineer Lowell E. Ledford of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who kept the car for 15 years, undertaking its first restoration. In his care it was awarded its Primary First Place, with a perfect 100 points, at the Classic Car Club of America Gulf Area Grand Classic in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1977. Mr. Ledford sold the car to Don Williams of the Blackhawk Collection in 1985. A color photograph published in the second volume of Jan Melin’s book, Mercedes-Benz: The Supercharged 8-Cylinder Cars of the 1930s, shows the car in this period, painted the red that was then de rigeur for any self-respecting 540 K. Subsequent owners included Japanese collector Nachiro Ishikawa, who maintained the car in California but occasionally journeyed with it to Europe; reportedly he drove it twice in the famed Monte Carlo Historic Rally, finishing 1st in the event in both 1991 and 1994. In the mid-1990s he sold the car to the longtime Mercedes-Benz procurer, Thomas Taffet, who would become its next longtime owner and caretaker. The car was sold from the Taffet collection in 2011, and following a brief period with a collector in the UAE, was returned to the United States and purchased for the present owner’s collection, in which it has remained since. Its older restoration was freshened cosmetically near the end of Mr. Taffet’s long ownership, and is still quite attractive overall, with its red and black finish an elegant contrast to the bright red interior, as proven by its exhibition at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2019. Both the chassis and engine number stamps are original, as is the firewall data plate. More recently, the car received a service in preparation for sale by the highly regarded firm of Fast Cars in Redondo Beach, California, invoices for which work are included in the file. A lovely example of the 540 K in its highly sought-after first-series Cabriolet A form, this car has the beautiful, graceful lines and robust performance that one seeks in this significant model. It would be an ideal, astute acquisition for the new owner seeking a supercharged Mercedes-Benz for touring or regional concours competition, where it would undoubtedly be warmly welcomed as it has by enthusiasts for half a century. It has all the appeal that it did in the hands of Mrs. Leyder in 1936. 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A by Sindelfingen RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1987 Porsche "TAG" Turbo AP85
In the 1980s, Formula 1 belonged to McLaren International – a total of five drivers and four constructors championships were won by the team from Woking. In the mid-’80s, the MP4/2 and subsequent MP4/2B, MP4/2C, and finally MP4/3 were the cars to beat. A combination of John Barnard’s pioneering carbon composite chassis and the Porsche-designed and built TAG TTE P01 V6 twin-turbo engine led Alain Prost and Niki Lauda to three drivers and two constructors championships. These times were wild – limited safety, engines were turbocharged, small capacity units producing vast amounts of horsepower. Ron Dennis, in search of a manufacturer to provide a reliable turbocharged engine, partnered with Mansour Ojjeh’s TAG and approached Porsche. Hans Mezger headed up the project and designed a relatively narrow 80 degree V6 cylinder twin-turbocharged engine capable of producing 1060hp in its most potent qualifying trim. The design and materials used employed innovative technologies that are more commonplace in contemporary Formula 1 cars, but were unusual in period: cooling channels around the valve seats housing sodium-filled valves fed from twin water pumps mounted at the end of the engine itself; KKK handed turbo-chargers; forged pistons supplied by Mahle and titanium connecting rods. The TAG-Porsche TTE P01 V6 was an icon winning 26 Grand Prix – to celebrate how special the engine was, the team came up with the idea to install it in Porsche’s ultimate road car of the period, the 911 Turbo. The one-off Porsche 930 TAG Turbo is the original expression of “a Formula 1 engine installed in a road car”. The car has subtle aesthetic differences versus the standard 930 Turbo, specifically a deeper front splitter (unlike the air-cooled three litre flat six-cylinder engine in the standard car, the TAG-Turbo is water-cooled, necessitating the introduction of radiators in the front of the car); a larger rear wing; Ruf alloy wheels, and a turbo boost gauge that went to three bars. The car remained the singular example of a Porsche Formula 1 engine installed in a road car for many years, until one day in April 2017 we visited McLaren Technology Center, home of McLaren Racing. We enquired if we could purchase the one-off 930 TAG Turbo, which was respectfully declined, which led us to then ask about an engine for an exact copy of the one-off, which we would build at Lanzante. McLaren agreed to consider it and get back to us. Meanwhile, we considered what would be required to build the second car to the correct standard – we realized that in order to produce a car of the highest quality, we would need to produce a small volume run of 930 TAG Turbos. Some time was spent on the details of the build, and we eventually arrived at a production number of 11 cars, one car for each driver in each year the Porsche TAG Turbo engine contested Grand Prix in a McLaren chassis. McLaren Racing agreed to sell us sufficient examples of the TAG Turbo V6, and the Porsche 930 TAG Turbo by Lanzante was born. We studied the original one-off, and developed our concept more accurately – we wanted to stay true to the original car, but contemporaneously improve on the quality, and drivability and utilize the best technology available to us. Every engine used in a Porsche 930 TAG Turbo by Lanzante is an original, designed and built by Porsche in period, TTE P01 twin turbo V6, and used in a Formula 1 car in the period. We have partnered with Cosworth, a world-class automotive engineering company, to re-engineer and re-built the race engines to the most optimal form for use in a Porsche 911 road car. The development journey has resulted in a package that delivers: 503 bhp at 8,500rpm and 420Nm in maximum torque Maximum engine speed of 9,000 rpm Maximum boost pressure of 3 bar Total weight of an engine – 130kg (which is 130kg less than the standard engine in a 930 Turbo road car). AP85 started as a lovely 1987 930 Turbo that was in great driving condition. Once sourced, the car was transported to Lanzante LTD in November of '20 to start its transition into one of the lucky eleven TAG Turbo's. When working through the initial vehicle specification, it was determined that the car would be finished in Porsche Slate Grey over a "Manor Red Leather/Houndstooth" interior. Completing its build in February of '22, the car was then flown over to the United States to join a collection of some historic McLaren Grand Prix cars. AP85's engine was most notably used in the 1985 Holland Grand Prix and 1986 French Grand Prix, propelling Prost to a 2nd place finish in each. Stefan Johansson would then have this engine strapped behind him in the 1987 Monaco Grand Prix where he suffered a DNF and in France where the engine would take him to an 8th place finish. Benefits from an annual service with Lanzante LTD in October of '24 Includes a second set of comfort seats Beautifully presented in a period-correct spec, this is an extremely rare opportunity to acquire a remarkable TAG Turbo built by Lanzante. 1987 Porsche "TAG" Turbo AP85 Mouse Motors LLC If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright In the 1980s, Formula 1 belonged to McLaren International – a total of five drivers and four constructors championships were won by the team from Woking. - 1981 Alfa Romeo GTV6
Features electric windows, air conditioning, tinted glass, R/C, alloy wheels, right exterior mirror, metallic paint, sports exhaust system The deeper you delve into this topic, the more we should agree on one important point - this car should actually no longer exist. At least not in this unrestored, top condition after 43 years. If it does (which we strongly doubt), then it is either in the Alfa Romeo Museum in Milan or in a well-sorted collection of an Alfa Romeo connoisseur. This exceptionally well-preserved GTV matured in sun-drenched Tuscany and was therefore not exposed to winter in salt or other bad weather. In addition, during the long rest periods of its sheltered maturation it probably had a shady spot that kept its interior and dashboard away from the sun and thus prevented it from drying out or even cracking. Accordingly, its interior does not look any more worn or faded than that of a two- to three-year-old, well-maintained Alfa of the same series. With the main difference that a good 40 years have passed and there are no more two- to three-year-old GTV6s... Do you see what we're getting at? We call it an incredible stroke of luck that we can admire the favorite car of an Alfisti who apparently knew what to do to preserve his car for posterity over 40 years ago. The Alfa is missing exactly NOTHING! No maintenance backlog, a functioning air conditioning system (from the factory!), no imbalance, tires, brakes - everything is just as you would have hoped 40 years ago when you could pick up your ordered new car from your trusted Alfa Romeo dealer. Even when the new car was handed over, the buyers of this brand had to be blessed with a certain... to put it mildly in old age - willingness to compromise, so as not to drive off the lot in a fit of rage at the ceremonial handover... Anyone who is old and honest enough with themselves and who is not suffering from memory loss will remember: That - was - Alfa! A love-hate relationship for a fascinating but also bitchy automobile with many stubborn moods that kept its drivers on their toes. But when it worked (which it basically did almost always, because it was usually only the small "background noises" that made life difficult...), the Alfa Romeo was a wonderful car with character, with sound and with a good dose of built-in Italy... We digress... There will be more details about this very special GTV shortly. First, however, we ask you to look at all the photos we took immediately after receiving this gem. Probably the finest, most melodious V6 engine from series production in one of the most beautiful coupes of the 70s and 80s - the top model from Alfa Romeo at the time with the designation GTV6 2.5. - 2000-lotus-esprit-v8
When the Lotus Esprit entered production in 1976, its dramatic wedge shape—draped in Giorgetto Giugiaro-penned “folded paper” styling—was a radical departure from the quirky Europa that it replaced, giving the British sports car manufacturer a welcome exotic edge. The Esprit proved so successful and popular that it was still in production over two decades after its introduction, though it benefited from numerous styling and engineering enhancements over the years. The Esprit’s edges were softened by new bodywork penned by Julian Thompson for the introduction of the Series 4 in 1994. However, the ante was upped further in 1996 with the introduction of the new V8 model. Mounted behind the driver in a midship position was a Lotus-developed Type 918 twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-8 engine—a motor that, with an output of 350 horsepower, answered any concerns drivers may have had about the comparatively underpowered early Esprits. This was mated to a five-speed manual transaxle; in skilled hands, a 4.4-second 0 to 60 mph sprint was achievable, along with a 175-mph top speed. In typical Lotus fashion, this was a car that punched well above its weight. The dashing example on offer is a 2000 Lotus Esprit V8 finished in Azure Blue Metallic over a Magnolia leather interior with blue piping and Beach (honey) carpets. According to the Certificate of Vehicle Provenance on file, just eight Esprits were finished with this color combination for North America in the year 2000. Further aiding this car’s desirability, all V8s received AP Racing brakes with aluminum four-piston calipers for the new millennium, increasing the performance potential of the already-impressive sports car. An optional glass roof panel completes the wonderful specification of this Lotus. Originally delivered new to an individual in North Barrington, Illinois, through Fox Valley Motorcars, the Lotus would remain with its original owner until the selling dealer re-acquired the car in 2019. Not long after, the vehicle received a belt, cooling system, and air conditioning service as shown on an invoice dated to August 2019. In 2021, a set of Michelin Pilot Sport All Season tires were additionally purchased for the car. In preparation for the sale, the engine received fresh oil and a new filter along with a repair to a minor coolant leak. Lastly, an older invoice from 2002 confirms a limited-slip differential was installed and the seller confirms the engine now breathes through a K&N air filter and an aftermarket muffler. A superlative Esprit, this Lotus is accompanied by a window sticker, provenance certificate, a Bill of Sale from 2000, service invoices, owner’s books, and the stock muffler. With fewer than 5,765 miles showing on the odometer at the time of cataloguing, this Lotus Esprit V8 certainly belongs to a select group of immensely well-preserved and sought-after examples. 2000 Lotus Esprit V8 RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright When the Lotus Esprit entered production in 1976, its dramatic wedge shape—draped in Giorgetto Giugiaro-penned “folded paper” styling—was a radical departure from the quirky Europa that it replaced, giving the British sports car manufacturer a welcome exotic edge.
