- 1963 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL 'Pagoda'
Upon its introduction at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz bosses knew that the 230 SL had big shoes to fill. Following directly in the footsteps of the 300 SL and 190 SL, the Stuttgart marque sought to address criticisms levelled at its earlier sports cars—namely, that the former was too expensive, and the latter lacked power. As the 230 SL was revealed in Switzerland, the long-serving and leading Mercedes-Benz head of development and research, Professor Fritz Nallinger, announced: ‘It was our aim to create a very safe and fast sports car with high performance, which despite its sports characteristics, provides a very high degree of traveling comfort.’ And so, the W113-platform 230 SL was born. The roadster wore an attractive, Paul Bracq-styled design, while the removable concave “Pagoda” hardtop roof added distinctive looks that would come to characterise the car. The model was a hit, with over 48,000 examples made over a four-year production run, with almost 20,000 of those going to the United States. Famous owners ranged from John Lennon and Sophia Loren to Sir Stirling Moss. The example offered here was instrumental to the long-lasting success of the 230 SL, as it served as a development car for the model. Ordered in the name of Prof. Nallinger—the driving force behind this and other Mercedes-Benz sports cars, including the 300 SL—the car was configured by the engineer with automatic transmission and power steering. As a result, it is believed to be the first 230 SL to bear these features. The car was registered to Daimler-Benz AG of Stuttgart as “S-RV 439” on 11 June 1963, known internally as “Experimental Vehicle Ut” and assigned the test car number “8”. Prof. Nallinger used the car as his personal transport while also fulfilling the car’s developmental role. Over a series of documented test drives made by Prof. Nallinger—available to view in the history file as part of a report compiled by Mercedes-Benz Heritage in 2023—Prof. Nallinger noted improvements to be made on the 230 SL, such as high noise levels recorded in the cabin. These documents extend to internal letters from Prof. Nallinger to the legendary Rudolf Uhlenhaut, and the engineers Herren Müller and Wilfert. It is thought that the single seat in the rear of the car—facing forward, unlike the sideward-mounted rear seat of the production-ready 230 SL—was installed for test purposes. Prof. Nallinger specified the car in the same configuration as the 230 SL revealed at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, complete with the unique and factory-correct colour pairing of Orange Metallic over Leder Türkis upholstery, with black dashboard panels and black hardtop. Today, the car retains this configuration, together with a largely original interior showing characterful patina, while the 230 SL retains its matching-numbers body, chassis, and engine. The car is offered with copies of its Data Card and order sheet, its first German registration, further to its history report compiled by Mercedes-Benz Heritage. Marque enthusiasts will relish this opportunity to acquire a significant piece of automotive history. 1963 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL 'Pagoda' RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1959 BMW 507 Series 2
BMW presents the Type 507 at the IAA 1955. With a price of almost DM 30,000, the car was almost as expensive as a Mercedes 300 SL, which was only offered as a roadster from 1957. This meant that it was only affordable for extremely well-heeled customers, which also led to an extremely low production figure of only 252 vehicles. The design of the body came from the industrial designer Albrecht Graf Goertz. The body was made of aluminium. Today, the 507 is considered a design icon and is a highly sought-after collector’s item. This 507 was produced in July 1959 and is one of the last 5 examples built. As one of the last 507s produced, it was fitted with disc brakes on the front axle. It was delivered to Frankfurt/Main in this colour combination and still presents itself today with its original engine and gearbox, (Matching numbers and Colours!) very rare for a BMW 507. In 1998 this BMW 507 was restored by a well-known specialist. Invoices and documentation are available. In one hand for 50 years! Very well documented. 1959 BMW 507 Series 2 Thiesen Hamburg GmbH If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1998-ferrari-355-berlinetta
A UK-supplied, right-hand drive example fitted with the desirable manual gated gearbox. Fresh to market following 15 years spent off the road in professional storage. Inheriting the proportions of its predecessor, the F355 was outwardly a much better resolved proposition, both aesthetically and aerodynamically. However, beneath the fabulous styling and smoother skin were further major advancements, including power steering, variable damping and a 100cc engine enlargement. The longitudinally mounted 3,496cc V8 generated a market-leading 380bhp at a spine-tingling 8,250rpm and the gearbox now had six speeds with a revised synchromesh making gear changes so much smoother. New electronically adjustable shock absorbers varied their stiffness within milliseconds to suit the road surface and the result of all these developments was evident around Ferrari's 1.86 mile Fiorano test track when the F355 was two seconds a lap faster than the 12-cylinder 512 TR. Sitting on the cusp between analogue and digital the F355 is considered the forerunner of all modern Ferraris and as the last of the hand-built cars before the 360 and later descendants moved to mass production. It will inevitably slip into the role of 'Classic Ferrari' with ease, becoming increasingly sought after now as the market appreciated next year's investment. Classically presented in Rosso Corsa with a Crema interior and red carpets, this UK-supplied, right-hand drive F355 is fitted with the desirable manual gearbox and according to its accompanying service book, was delivered via Stratstone, Wilmslow to a Mr Higginson on 4th August 1998. The odometer at the time of cataloguing was showing 36,938 miles and the V5C shows four former keepers. The car has been off the road without an MOT since 2010 kept in professional storage and is therefore fresh to market from long term ownership. In preparation for this sale, in June 2025 over £8,000 was invested into the mechanicals of the car including removing the engine, replacing timing belts, hydraulic tensioners, aux belts, AC belt, spark plugs, ignition leads and oil and fuel filters. In addition to this work the seller tells us that the 355 will be issued with a fresh MOT prior to the auction We very much encourage interested parties to come and see the car in the metal at Silverstone. Cosmetically it is in need of some further love and attention and despite the recent investment, it has been off the road for 15 years so buyers will perhaps need to factor in further recommissioning considering it’s lack of road-use. Guided very competitively, factoring in the above, this is a rare and desirable car that is crying out for its new owner to get it back on the road. A 355 when fully sorted is hugely engaging to drive, particularly when fitted with the manual gearbox, the V8 when on full song sounds like an F1 car and is simply addictive. 1998 Ferrari 355 Berlinetta Iconic Auctioneers Ltd If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright A UK-supplied, right-hand drive example fitted with the desirable manual gated gearbox. - 1992 Ford Escort RS Cosworth Lux
Iconic Auctioneers are renowned worldwide for offering the best Performance Fords on the market at auction and occasionally we are offered what can only be described as 'unrepeatable' cars. We have little doubt that this remarkable Escort RS Cosworth is unlikely to be matched in terms of its originality and 'as new' condition for some time to come. Just like the Lancia Integrale and Subaru Impreza, the Escort Cosworth was a 'Group A' rally car for the road - pure and simple. It was actually underpinned by a shortened version of the Sierra RS Cosworth's platform and powered by the same 2-litre turbocharged, longitudinally-mounted, Cosworth-developed engine driving all four wheels. The car was designed and engineered in Boreham, styled by noted designer Stephen Harper and ended up being assembled by Karmann in Germany. The Escort RS Cosworth was an 'homologation special' and its only role was to incorporate parts that Ford planned to use in their rally cars to ensure success in International Rallying. That success duly followed between 1993 and 1998 in the World Rally Championship for Manufacturers, but the road cars were very rare - with just 2,500 of these very focussed motor cars being built, becoming known as 'big-turbo cars', all capable of 150mph and easily identified by the aptly named 'Whale Tail' rear spoiler. This particular example is a stunning, UK-supplied, right-hand drive car finished in Diamond White with the desirable Lux-specification which included full leather, an electric sunroof, electric heated mirrors, heated windscreen, heated washer jets, leather steering wheel, electric windows and carpeted door bins. It has been a cherished part of the significant Collection from which it is offered and having been acquired almost 30 years ago, the car has been cosseted by both its first keeper, from whom it was purchased with just over 2,000 miles indicated and our late vendor who, it would appear, has added minimal mileage in the intervening years. We understand that it was regularly taken to shows in the 1990s, presumably by trailer and featured at an Autoglym Invitation Concours in 2009 where it sat alongside a Shelby Cobra belonging to the renowned petrol head and celebrity chef, James Martin. The odometer currently displays a remarkable 2,221 miles, supported by the car's first two MOT Certificates from 1995 and 1996 showing 2,217 and 2,218 miles respectively, providing evidence of how little the car has been used. In between its trailered outings, it has been part of the family living in our vendor's house in recent times. Given the lack of use in recent years, it has been decided to bring the car to sale following a thorough pre-auction preparation by the respected Tremona Garage of Southampton. The car will arrive at the NEC in a 'ready to drive' condition, although it won't be put through an MOT (it's a bit academic considering it's only covered three miles since the last one) and given that it doesn't currently sit on the DVLA system and may well become part of another Collection where daily use is not a factor. Once an integral part of one man's Collection of all the very best that Ford had to offer, we are sure that this 'as new' Escort RS Cosworth will find another home where it is equally treasured. 1992 Ford Escort RS Cosworth Lux Iconic Auctioneers Ltd If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1978 Fiat 131 Abarth Rally Stradale Homage
Apart from the quirkiness possessed by all-Italian cars, it wouldn’t be unkind to describe the standard Fiat 131 as just another unremarkable family saloon, however Fiat’s decision in 1975 to contest the 'Group 4' Rally Championship using the 131 and invite input from Abarth and Bertone was a game-changer. The company’s involvement in international rallying brought untold publicity and success in the form of the 1977, 1978 and 1980 FIA World Rally Constructor’s titles, as well as the World Rally Drivers Championships in 1978 and 1980. Much to the delight of enthusiasts, it also brought 400 Stradale road-going versions, built to satisfy FIA 'Group 4' homologation requirements, on to the market. The alterations required to turn a bland saloon into an all-surface competition machine were significant and began with the chassis itself. Abarth engineers removed the rigid rear axle and replaced it with a fully independent MacPherson strut setup. They also developed a 2-litre twin-cam, in-line four-cylinder engine with a lightweight alloy 16-valve head, which sent power to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox. The engine in the Stradale version breathed through a Weber double-barrel carburettor and produced a claimed 140bhp (single Weber 34ADF carburettor). Meanwhile, Bertone developed special bodywork, fitting a fibreglass bonnet and aluminium doors to reduce weight and adding wheel arches to accommodate larger 15'' Cromodoras and tyres, air intakes for cooling and spoilers for additional downforce. The results were spectacular, a cohesive design that turned the two-door shopping car into a veritable 1970s road-rocket. The car presented here is the result of one man's desire to create his ultimate road-going 131 Abarth Rally Stradale, commissioning some of the best Fiat/Abarth specialist engineers in the business to help him develop a very original 131 S Mirafiori 1600, which he had purchased directly from Abarth GMR Works Museum in Belgium in 2007. The car’s original bodywork was in excellent condition, with little rust and a very solid bodyshell. This was stripped back to bare metal and a very good GRP body kit was sourced (consisting of front and rear wheel arches, front panel and valence, roof spoiler, rear valance, bonnet scoop, boot spoiler) and hand-fabricated onto the bare metal, taking great care to ensure they were aligned correctly and of perfect fit – utilising an original car as a template! With guidance from the Scheda di Omologazione (which will accompany the car) referencing the engineering behind the factory-made examples, the suspension was sourced from a Lancia Delta Integrale (thus recreating the original specification independent rear suspension, with a 4.1 ratio rear differential). Other parts were hand-fabricated parts including the radiator, oil cooler, prop-shaft and coil-overs. The rear sub-frame was hand-built and has four adjustable arms and rose-joints, and the front braking system was bespoke-built by Hi Spec Motorsport Ltd. Wanting the imposing stance of the Rally Corsa, the wheels were a very important part of the build and subsequently, the car was built around them with a set of ATS wheels sourced from Germany, replicating the look of the Rally Corsa. The engine is a 2-litre Abarth 103TC unit fully rebuilt to a specification by Guy Croft Engineering and has adjustable electronic ignition, race camshafts and a Weber 44IDF/71 carburettor. An adjustable 'competition' ECU ensures the car runs smoothly when in road mode, but can be adjusted to its raw state should you be brave enough! The engine is mated to an Abarth 131 Racing TC 5-speed gearbox. The original Homologation Abarth Stradale interior was also purchased from the Abarth GMR Museum, one of only 400 sets ever produced, giving an authentic look and feel completed by an Abarth 3-spoke steering wheel and Alcantara headlining. This is a real opportunity to acquire a superbly engineered car, with proper integrity and diligence to its build. It was conceived to be a ‘keeper’ but sadly, due to a change in circumstances, this special car is now being offered for sale. It is absolutely ready-to-go and was recently magazine-featured by Auto Italia. Worthy of any collection of Italian cars, this is not to be missed. *Images are used with permission from (and much thanks to) Michael Ward of Auto Italia magazine, the world’s first specialist publication to focus on Italian automotive design, motoring heritage and engineering. 1978 Fiat 131 Abarth Rally Stradale Homage Iconic Auctioneers Ltd If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer.
