  • 1989-ferrari-328-gts-1

The ultimate 170mph sports car in its day and now regarded as a true design classic, this Targa-topped, UK-supplied car is on offer from long term, diligent ownership. The entirely new Ferrari 308 made its debut at the Paris Salon in 1975 and marked a welcome return to Pininfarina styling, with rakish lines and curved haunches. After ten years of huge success, particularly in the US, Ferrari had grown weary of the 'Federalisation' of their lovingly designed motorcars in America, with mandatory ugly rubber bumpers ruining the Pininfarina-penned lines. With their Italian aesthetics under attack, Ferrari launched the new 328 with body-coloured front and rear bumpers which adhered to US guidelines and for the first time, the design remained unadulterated by bureaucracy. Increasing both bore and stroke, the Quattrovalvole engine's capacity was raised to 3,186cc which, together with a higher compression ratio, revised pistons and an improved Marelli engine management system, lifted maximum power to 270bhp. Top speed was raised to within a whisker of 160mph with the sprint to 60mph covered in a fraction over 5.5 seconds. Beneath the skin, the tubular steel chassis remained much as before, with all-round independent suspension by double wishbones, four-wheel servo-assisted disc brakes and aluminium-alloy wheels, though the latter were increased in size. The interior too had come in for subtle revision and now featured improved instruments, switchgear and heating. Pininfarina built two variants of this mid-engine sportscar, the Gran Turismo Berlinetta Coupé and the Gran Turismo Spider (GTS) featuring a removable Targa-top, offering an exhilarating open-air driving experience and affording the driver and their fortunate passenger unbridled access to the unmistakable howl of the Ferrari V8. Production ended in 1989 and by then some 7,412 GTS and GTB variants had rolled out of Maranello, with just 543 GTS cars supplied to the UK in right-hand drive. This particular UK-supplied 328 GTS from the final year of production is offered fresh to market after 15 years with its current custodian having been originally supplied by Maranello Concessionaires Sales Ltd to its first owner on 4th April 1989. It's classically presented in Rosso Corsa with Crema hide and was specified ABS, air-conditioning and a body-coloured rear aerofoil. Enjoyed by several owners in the intervening years, the GTS passed into the safe hands of our vendor in 2010, a retired Rolls-Royce Engineer and Ferrari Owners Club member, so it will come as no surprise when we confirm that the majority of the required service work has been undertaken by himself, including cam belt changes every three years, the latest of which will be completed prior to sale with, in his words, 'more care, attention and due diligence than would normally be lavished upon such a vehicle'. It should also be noted that it has just been presented for an MOT inspection passing without advisories. Used sparingly during present ownership but diligently maintained during that time, our vendor has stressed that the GTS has never missed a beat at any point during his ownership on any of its excursions which have not only been within the UK but also further afield into Europe, taking in various Ferrari meetings and Classic Tours along the way. Complete with toolkit and jack and a comprehensive history file comprising the original document wallet complete with handbook, service books, numerous MOT certificates and various invoices that have been amassed over the years. It should also be noted that the current registration number, JIB 713, pleasingly is to remain assigned to the vehicle and does form part of the sale. 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS Iconic Auctioneers Ltd If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1964-abarth-simca-2000-gt-1

The Abarth-Simca 2000 was introduced in 1964, powered by a 1,946-cc engine producing over 200 brake horsepower. The motor breathed through 58-millimetre-choke Weber carburettors, the largest Webers ever manufactured. Lightweight and powerful, Abarth-Simca 2000 GTs quickly gained a reputation for being the automotive equivalent of David to the Goliath figure posed by the likes of Ferrari, Porsche, or Jaguar. Many examples went on to dominate hill climb championships and circuit racing, putting the major manufacturers on notice. Chassis number 136 0046 was first registered on 9 January of 1964 to SpA Abarth & Co with the Turin registration “TO 596033”, according to the original libretto. The car’s recorded homologation date was 30 December 1963, meaning chassis 136 0046 is one of the first Abarth-Simca 2000s built. While not much is known about 136 0046’s early history, a photograph exists of the car racing mid-season at Mainz-Finthen airfield in Austria on 14 June 1964. The known sister Works cars were registered on later Turin numbers “TO 622651” and “TO 622652” and were used throughout the 1964 sportscar racing season. Like the other Works cars, chassis 0046 was retired and sold off by Abarth in 1965 and later de-registered, making its whereabouts difficult to trace. In John De Boer’s The Italian Car Registry, 136 0046 is noted as being present at the Mostra Padova show in 1991, when it was owned by Mauro Lotti of Florence, who acquired the car via Giancarlo Ferri. This Abarth was purchased by the father of the consigning owner from a Tuscan collector in 2019. The following year, the 2000 GT received a service, which included an engine rebuild and four new tyres. Today, chassis 136 0046 retains the correct-type 236 Abarth-Simca engine and Weber carburettors. While the car has a few deviations from the factory standards, it is a wonderful example, likely residing in Italy following its brief racing career. These Abarth-Simcas 2000 GTs are said to provide an incredible driving experience and have well-earned their giant-killer reputation both in period and historic motorsport events alike. Looking resplendent in light blue paintwork, this would be an exciting car to race at events such as the Tour Auto or Goodwood Revival, but also the perfect car for some spirited Sunday morning driving. 1964 Abarth Simca 2000 GT RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. This M1 Procar is one of the Osella built cars, finished by BMW on May 9th, 1979. This particular car was purchased by Vasek Polak to be campaigned the following year. They took the car to the Riverside raceway for some break-in laps then back to their shop. Shortly thereafter, the FIA rules changed, and the car was no longer eligible to race. The car was put in storage until the prior owner purchased it in 1989. The car has been continuously maintained and kept in pristine mechanical and cosmetic condition. It’s believed to be the only "new" M1 pro car in existence. In 2021 this car was acquired by the current owner. A recent service was completed by The Werkshop in March of 2022, with limited mileage added since then. The car has been used sparingly at private track days since its acquisition. This BMW M1 Procar offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of motorsport history. • 1989-ferrari-f40-5

Ferrari's 201 mph F40 is the definitive supercar and has a formidable reputation alongside the 250 GTO as possibly the best road Ferrari built to date. With the F40, Pininfarina produced an era-defining creation, one that even today is instantly recognisable by old and young enthusiasts alike. F40's were closely derived from the experimental GTO Evoluzione and the road-going 288 GTO (that the F40 replaced). The design features a tubular steel chassis with bonded composite inserts, most notably around the sills and floor pan, The 2,936 cc motor produces approximately 500 bhp at 7,000 rpm with the help of two water-cooled IHI turbochargers running 1.1 bar of boost. At 1,202 kg, the F40 had, and still has, a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio. Shatteringly fast by any comparison (especially for 1988), the F40 can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and hit 201 mph flat out making it the first production car to surpass this mystical boundary. Completed at the factory in January 1989, this example is one of the 7-series chassis cars completed that benefit from a number of key differences removed over the span of production. Naturally as a 7-series production example, this early F40 is both non-cat and non-adjust, which are considered to be the more pure, more raw variant of the esteemed model. Corroborating with the very early build date are several characteristics which are indicative of an early ‘non-cat, non-adjust’ car. These include the bare aluminium intercoolers, and the different construction and finishing of carbon Kevlar components such as the more rudimentary surface undeath the front clam, which draws the eyes to the unique way in which the NACA ducts are affixed to its underside; a true reflection of how these early cars were built to be as minimal, basic and as lightweight as possible. Under the front clam, the front brake cooling ducts and their flanges are also visible, and the manner they join to the clam is again different to later cars. The front wheel well is of the split, two-piece design, seen only on a handful of the earliest examples. Similarly, this example features non-adjustable suspension, introduced as an option on the later produced cars. The interior also sees alternative soft fabric seats witnessed previously on other early examples by DK. The 74th example completed, this example was completed at the factory on 27th January 1989, already having been earmarked by Ferrari themselves for the upcoming Geneva International Motorshow. The F40 was delivered ahead of this to official importer IFS Ferrari Suisse SA in February. As corroborated by noted Ferrari historian Marcel Massini, this example then sat alongside Ferrari’s latest and greatest offering, the brand new Mondial T at the 59th Geneva Motorshow in March 1989. 9th December 1988 Factory build start date 27th January 1989 Factory completion date February 1989 Delivered new to official importer IFS Ferrari Suisse SA 9th March 1989 Displayed on the Ferrari stand during the 59th Geneva International Motor Show, upgraded to sliding windows for the show 9th May 1990 Road registered in the name of Graber Automobile of Wichtrach With the Pirelli P-Zero having been developed as the first road-going bespoke compound tyre for the F40, it was this option-tyre that was selected for its presence at Geneva. The P-Zero name had been introduced five years earlier with the Delta S4, but as a semi-slick on a homologation production run. P-Zeros at the time had a slightly different sidewall to those available today. It is worth noting that the car recieved sliding windows for the show, to be returned to specification as per the original build sheets after the show. It would not receive road registration until the 9th of May 1990 with its warranty booklet issued in the name of Graber Automobile of Wichtrach. The car was sold the following year to close friend of Graber Automobile, Fridolin Broder of Liechtenstein who was for a short period, the official importer into the country. Its next owner, Mr Höflinghoff-Hess of Germany retained the car for a number of years, eventually advertising the car in German-magazine Auto, Motor & Sport in July of 1998 with just 875 kms. The F40 was snapped up by Bernhard Dransmann of Osnabrück later the same month and he would retain the car for just over two years. Dransmann would sell the car to its most recent custodian in September of 2000. Over the past 25 years, this F40 has been cared for by just one custodian. Today this example has covered just 12,500 kilometres. All of the early details which set this car apart remain true today, including the original soft-fabric seats (although an additional retrimmed set will be supplied), bare aluminium intercoolers, split wheel well, unpainted lower sills and largely exposed engine bay weave. This remarkable F40 today presents superbly at our showrooms outside London. With yellow in-filled tyres as a modern nod to how it was presented at the Geneva Motor Show just shy of 36 years ago, this F40 would be a standout addition to any collection. Today this F40 is accompanied by its original book pack and wallet, spare key and tools and whilst serviced prior to arrival, this example will pass through our workshops once more ahead of sale. 1989 Ferrari F40 D.K. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright Ferrari's 201 mph F40 is the definitive supercar and has a formidable reputation alongside the 250 GTO as possibly the best road Ferrari built to date. Supplied new to the UK in 1973, this example was a special order optioned in Marrone Dino Metallizzato 106.M.73 over Beige Connolly leather VM3218. At the time of order, this 246 GT further optioned with 7 ½ inch sand cast Campagnolo wheels and the resulting, 1 of just 10 UK supplied ‘flares’ examples. Ordered new through Dick Lovett, this would without doubt have stood out from the crowd! By 1990 the Dino was in need of a restoration and then owner Mr Rombouts-Howitt would embark on a ten-year restoration project with Grand Tourismo Services of Egham. Metalwork was carried out by Dino-specialists Prestige Metal Works, documented by a wealth of invoices on file, as well as for parts purchased from Maranello Concessionaires between 1990 and 2000. The restorative works further included an engine rebuild. The Dino was refinished in Giallo over Nero and fitted with ‘chairs’ at this time. DK Engineering sold this 246 GT to its current custodian in October 2005 with a mileage reading 33,100 miles. The car was placed into storage forming part of a significant collection at the time and has since covered just 200 miles since. Extracted from storage by DK in March 2025, this example has since been through our workshops and will receive a fresh and thorough service as a part of the sale. • 1989-lancia-delta-hf-integrale-8v-group-a

In the two decades between the World Rally Championship’s 1973 inception and Lancia exiting the stages at the end of 1992, the Italian marque proved the dominant force. So much so, it still holds the record as the most successful manufacturer with no fewer than 10 titles, including an unprecedented run to six consecutive crowns from 1987 to 1992. The latter success was underpinned by the Delta, a humble family hatchback introduced in 1979. While the Delta nameplate appeared during the hallowed Group B era, the model truly earned its Martini stripes once the more production-based Group A formula was adopted for 1987. Lancia’s engineering prowess eventually developed the car into a turbocharged, all-wheel drive champion that amassed 46 WRC event wins to cement its status as one of the great competition cars. Chassis number 458689, offered here, holds the distinction of having achieved two of those triumphs. Making its debut at Rally Portugal in 1989, two-time WRC champion Miki Biasion and co-driver Siviero Tiziano headed an Integrale podium lockout. Registered as “TO74784L” the car next retired from a round of the European Rally Championship, where it was piloted by Markku Alén. Mikael Ericsson claimed a second WRC victory across the 30 stages comprising Rally Argentina in August before 1978 title winner Alén snared 3rd place in Australia. Those three WRC appearances helped Lancia and Biasion to a WRC Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ title clean sweep in 1989. After its stint with the factory team, the car would contest select national events before reappearing in the WRC in Argentina and Sanremo in 1991. Approximately 25 years ago, the Lancia was acquired by its consigning owner, a rally driver during the Group B era. While in his care, the Delta received a restoration by an Abarth mechanic. Accordingly, it presents in eight-valve 1989 specification wearing its period-correct Martini livery from Rally Portugal. A two-time WRC event winner, a double WRC title winner, and driven by two WRC greats, this Lancia Delta Integrale boasts outstanding pedigree and would make for a significant addition to any competition-themed collection. 1989 Lancia Delta HF Integrale 8V Group A RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. Only 2’921 examples of the Alfa Romeo Spider Aerodynamica with its two-litre engine were completed between 1983 and 1989. This beautiful Alfa, delivered in 1989 and equipped with a fuel injected and catalysed engine, is a Swiss delivered example. The first few months of its life were spent as a showroom display at the Alfa Romeo agency Jean Müller in Bönigen before it was registered for the first time on the 5th of July 1990. In 1994, with then 18’000 kilometres showing, the spider was taken over by the vendor - most probably from its first owner. He had a set of Chrome wire wheels installed which have been certified and approved for use on the car. The original steel rims are available and will be handed over with the Alfa. Over the last 30 years the Spider only saw use during summertime and was always carefully maintained. Produced from 1987-1992. It was the final car than Enzo himself was personally involved with before his passing. It was built to mark the 40th anniversary of Ferrari producing road cars. It was an evolution of the 288GTO Evolution. It was as close to a road going race car that you could produce. The F40 is one of the most iconic designs ever penned and has stood the test of time by even wooing young enthusiasts today just as it did 30 years ago. When it was produced, it was the most expensive road car produced at a cost of $400,000. Powered by a 2.9liter Twin Turbo V-8 and pumping out 479hp and 426 lb-ft of torque; it propelled the roughly 2,900lb car to 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 199mph. The F40 was outfitted with an all new revolutionary Pirelli P-Zero “Asymmetric” tire that had Kevlar into the tire. Of all of the supercars, the F40 provides the most raw and analog experience, it keeps your arms up when driving compared to its older and younger brethren. When it comes to F40's there are different variants that one can select depending on how rare they would like to be. Early Non-Catalytic and Non-Adjustable Suspension Above with similar with Sliding Windows Non-Catalytic and Adjust Cat and Non-Adjust Cat and Adjustable Suspension Very late builds (as 1992 was the lowest production year) This particular-sliding window example was picked up at the factory by the original owner with its Italian plates and driven back to the U.K. The owner always had the car serviced and the books were always stamped. We acquired the car from the original owner in the summer of 2024 and immediately sent it to Ferrari of England for a full major service and Classiche certification in June/July of 2024. This is a true sliding window car; there are many sliding window cars that you may see, very few are, “original and born-with”. What makes this car even more special is all of its original paperwork including letters from HR Owen Ferrari when the first owner initially ordered the car, the original sales contract, previous service records. Cars like this with this kind of documentation and low ownership do not come around often. Of all of the F40's, go for the rarity and exclusivity. 1990 Ferrari F40 GT Motor Cars If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1974-porsche-911-carrera-rs-1

To ensure that the FIA motorsport governing body would homologate its new 3-litre RSR race car for the 1974 season, Porsche developed the road-going 911 Carrera RS 3.0. Shortly after completing some 1,580 examples of the fabled RS 2.7, the Stuttgart factory produced just 55 units of its brawnier successor. Not only were they far scarcer, and over twice the price, but the model was a true homologation special brimmed with technology developed directly for the track. The engine was a detuned RSR motor featuring a Silumin crankcase, single-plug ignition, and a road-legal exhaust system. Meanwhile, the four-piston callipers and drilled discs were lifted directly from the all-conquering, 24 Hours of Le Mans-winning 917 sportscar. The prominent new front air dam helped keep brake temperatures under control while also feeding the oil cooler for the flat-six, which was rated at 230 horsepower. Helping achieve a remarkable weight of only 900 kilograms, the Carrera RS 3.0 was fitted with lightened glass, had all sound deadening removed, and used composite bonnet and engine cover panels. Given the clear link to Porsche’s thoroughbred racers, the example offered here appropriately boasts competition pedigree. Finished in Grand Prix White, this Carrera RS 3.0 was sold new in Stuttgart on 10 January 1974 and supplied to Mr Byker of Düsseldorf. The following year, it was acquired by keen Italian clubman racer Antonino Guagliardo. In July 1975, having found a faster replacement for his Lancia Fulvia and 911 S, Mr Guagliardo fielded the car in the Targa Florio. Entered by Cefalù Corse with second driver Libero Marchiolo, it was resplendent in its Grand Prix White but featured red bumpers. Unfortunately, the Porsche failed to finish. While Mr Guagliardo eventually switched to forced induction in the form of a Porsche 930, he retained the Carrera RS 3.0 for three decades. The car was then sold to France before, in 2014, it was acquired by a Belgian Porsche dealer. It joined The Stuttgart Legends Collection in January 2015. Presented in its factory colour and wearing dished wheels, a Carrera stripe, and Porsche script all finished in gold, this Carrera RS 3.0 benefits from a February 2025 inspection by marque expert Andy Prill (available to view on file). He noted the original chassis stamping and production number, plus several other authentic 3.0 RS features such as the chassis reinforcements and double-skin rear crossmember. While the current engine has been built around a magnesium crankcase, this car is supplied with its matching-numbers original Silumin crankcase. Please note that this Porsche will require mechanical recommissioning prior to driving following a period of static display. Among the most scarce and sought-after of all road-going 911s, this Carrera RS 3.0 boasts period competition history in the Targa Florio and known ownership from new. The opportunity to acquire such a revered homologation special is not to be missed. 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera RS RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The Cultivated Collector’s 1998 Ferrari 550 Maranello, Chassis 12801, is a stunning example of the breed - finished in the beautiful color of Grigio Titano, is complemented by the interior which is wrapped in deep Blu Scuro leather. Having covered a mere 17,700 miles from new, 12801 benefits greatly from loving previous ownership, seeing consistent servicing and having just been serviced by marque specialist Jim McGee of Pocono Sports Car. This 550 Maranello is in exceptional condition throughout, a turn-key example of the ultimate modern Grand Tourer that is ready to enjoy on the open road. The early 1990’s saw Ferrari ignite a return to their roots by reintroducing and reviving the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout that had been synonymous with the brand’s early success, yet absent from Ferrari's lineup since the 365 GTB/4 Daytona in the early 1970s. Riding on the heels of the electrifying 512M, the all new 550 Maranello would triumphantly carry the torch forward for V12 powered Ferrari cars. Exuding the brand’s deep and rich history, the 550 Maranello was proudly named after Ferrari’s home, the beautiful city of Maranello, Italy. Ferrari entrusted design to Pininfarina, with the project being led by Lorenzo Ramaciotti, the exterior featured a sleek and timeless design emphasized by clean flowing lines and muscular proportions akin to a classic GT car, while the interior exuded a stunning leather clad center console encapsulating both driver and passenger. Excellence was not skin deep, however. Nestled in the tubular steel space frame, the 550 Maranello boasted the best Ferrari had to offer in the form of the F133A, a front-mounted 5.5-liter V12 engine producing 478 horsepower and 419 lb-ft of torque, all being sent to the rear wheels through an engaging 6-speed manual transmission. The 550 Maranello boasted marvelous handling and dynamics, thanks to its balanced weight distribution and highly-tuned double wishbone suspension, providing occupants with a comfortable and luxurious interior with leather upholstery and modern amenities, placing it firmly as the class leader for long-distance driving and grand touring. During its production run from 1996 to 2001, an estimated 3,000 examples left the Maranello based manufacturing facilities. Over its 5 year lifespan, the 550 Maranello consistently received positive reviews from critics and enthusiasts, being widely regarded as a highly capable and desirable grand tourer, blending performance, style, and comfort in an exceptional Italian package. 1998 Ferrari 550 Maranello The Cultivated Collector LLC If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1978-chevrolet-corvette-c3

The Chevrolet Corvette C3, launched in 1968, is one of the most iconic American muscle cars, known for its aggressive styling and powerful V8 engines. This first-year model has all the charm of a true classic and is a great example of the legendary « Shark » generation. This particular Corvette was built in April 1968 at the original St. Louis factory in Missouri, making it one of the early and original C3s. It is a matching numbers model, which adds to its collectibility and authenticity. Finished in its original striking Le Mans Blue (code 976) with a black leather interior, this Corvette was first delivered in the United States. This exclusive color was only available for the 1968 model year, making it particularly sought-after by collectors. It takes its name from the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit, reinforcing the car’s sporting and prestigious image. The deep, vibrant metallic blue is highly distinctive and accentuates the sculpted curves of the C3 beautifully. It’s powered by a 5.7L V8 engine (350ci) with a single, double-body carburetor, completely analog and without electronics, staying true to the raw driving feel of the era. Coupled with a manual gearbox, it’s a real pleasure to drive for anyone who enjoys a more involved and authentic driving experience. The simplicity of the mechanical setup also makes it easier and more cost-effective to maintain. With its bold look and unmistakable character, it’s a car made for enthusiasts who like to stand out. It has 64,648 miles on the clock and is in very good condition. The car was owned by a U.S. citizen and was imported to Germany after having gone through a full restoration, including repainting in its original Le Mans Blue. Numerous key components were replaced during the restoration, including the suspension, brakes, dampers, engine alternator, and air conditioning compressor. It was later rated 2+ during an expert appraisal in 2015 by German specialists. Documentation includes multiple TÜV and inspection reports confirming the excellent condition of the vehicle. Here are some highlights from its history: First registered on July 1st, 1968 November 2011: registered in Jacksonville, Florida August 2015: technical inspection done August 2016: registered in Germany June 2017: change of owner in Germany Mid-2020: imported and registered in Belgium with one owner The car has always been maintained by professional specialists since its arrival in Europe. The body looks great, with clean chrome details and quality paintwork. The black leather interior is in good shape, and overall, the car shows very well. Notably, this example features the desirable original double chrome bumpers at the front and rear, a signature detail of the early C3 models. This Corvette is also equipped with several factory options, some rare for 1968, including electric windows, air conditioning, power steering, and power brakes. Another distinctive feature of this early version is the removable rear window, a unique design element not found in later models. In short, a solid and highly collectible example of a classic American sports car, in excellent condition, well-documented, and fitted with desirable options and a manual transmission. The car can be viewed at our showroom in Zaventem, just 10 minutes from Brussels Airport. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright The Chevrolet Corvette C3, launched in 1968, is one of the most iconic American muscle cars, known for its aggressive styling and powerful V8 engines. • 1985 Audi Sport quattro S1 E2

APEX PREDATOR Group B is often hailed as the golden era of rallying, producing some of the most powerful rally cars to ever take to a special stage and fostering a previously unheard-of level of development and innovation. No car or manufacturer exemplified that better than Audi and its game-changing quattro. The Ingolstadt outfit is credited with bringing four-wheel drive to the rally stage, and its revolutionary design delivered no fewer than three Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ World Championships by 1984. But while it held the advantage over rear-drive competition, the car was also overweight and nose heavy. In an effort to stay ahead of its rivals—development of Lancia’s S4 having begun in 1983—Audi introduced the Sport quattro in 1984. Despite its prodigious power output, the shorter-wheelbase car was difficult to handle and drivers struggled. Eventual 1984 World Champion Stig Blomqvist even avoided using the new car until he had one hand on the trophy. The situation led to the development of what is widely accepted to be one of the most fearsomely powerful and ferociously quick rally cars of the golden era: the Audi quattro S1 E2. The new car made use of the same fIve-cylinder 2,110-cc alloy block with a 20-valve aluminium head mated to a single vast KKK turbocharger and was capable of producing a colossal 550 horsepower—among the highest of any Group B rally car. Coupled with lightweight carbon-Kevlar composite bodywork and four-wheel drive, the quattro S1 E2 could hit 160 km/h in a blistering 8.9 seconds. In the words of Walter Röhrl: “the engine was always blowing off pressure and banging explosions into the countryside. No car was like that”. Power aside, the E2’s greatest achievement was much improved weight distribution and a slimming regimen that saw it tip the scales at around 1,100 kilograms. Engineers moved many of the heavier components—including the radiator, fans, and even the alternator—to the rear of the car, while the wild bodywork and vast front and rear wings that became the car’s trademark were shaped by wind tunnel testing and greatly improved total downforce. In total, just 20 examples of this legendary rally weapon would leave Audi’s Ingolstadt works. ON THE LOOSE Chassis 018 was the 18th of 20 Audi Sport quattro S1 E2s built and is recorded on an Audi Sport document (on file) as being registered “IN-NR-43” in Ingolstadt on 12 February 1986 with a note that it was built specifically for the Greek (Acropolis) rally.. As documented in Reinhard Klein’s definitive Group B – The Owner’s Edition, IN-NR-43 was entered in the 1986 Rallye de Portugal, driven by two-time WRC (World Rally Championship) champion Walter Röhrl. Excitement for the event was tempered by concern at the Sintra stage—previously a night-time section—being run in daylight, with huge crowds expected to line the course, and a usually reserved Markku Alén even appealed for people to steer clear of the danger. A more pragmatic Röhrl had been quizzed on the involvement of spectators a year earlier and had said: “They are only bushes to us—only trees; if we think these are people, we cannot drive”. Röhrl found his pace from the off, leading the first stage on equal footing with Alén and his Lancia Delta S4 despite a chilling near miss in which a spectator ran across the road in front of the charging quattro. The second stage resulted in Röhrl losing ground to the Lancia S4s and Peugeot T-16s, and by the end of the much longer third stage he had consolidated his position running 5th overall behind the three Works Lancias and the Peugeot of Juha Kankkunen. The rally was cut short by Joaquim Santos’ tragic accident. In the immediate aftermath all Works teams withdrew from the event as a mark of respect for those lost. Audi withdrew from the entire Championship, with this outing for chassis 018 marking the manufacturer’s final competitive entry in Group B. It was subsequently sold to Sweden. A PHOENIX RISING The Group B era of rallying encouraged the development of some of the most exciting machines in motorsport and provided a spectacle that was never to be equalled—but this thrilling period of competition was all too brief. In many ways the series flew too close to the sun, the unchecked arms race of peak performance and spectator involvement proving a deadly combination. Some Group B machines, such as Audi’s all-conquering Sport quattro S1 E2, found themselves without a home when the formula was outlawed in 1986, while others, including the E2’s would-be successor, the quattro RS 002, would be abandoned during development and never turn a wheel in anger. With the advent of Group A as the WRC’s primary category, the only other plausible places for these beasts to compete were hill climbs or the European Rallycross Championship, and scores of former Group B rally weapons—including chassis 018—were deployed into the fiercely competitive and crowd-pleasing formula. Fascinatingly, the rally exiles would be developed beyond even the extremes of Group B, such was the sprint-based formula in deference to the endurance format of rallying. Like many of its contemporaries, chassis 018 was refined and modified for Rallycross competition, where it was briefly campaigned by Anders Carlsson. Freed from the shackles of prior homologation, numerous cosmetic and mechanical modifications were made to tailor the car to the short and frenetic circuits that made up the championship. Chasiss 018 then took part in the 1989 and 1990 Race Of Champions, before being acquired by the Race Of Champions co-founder in 1991. Conceived to showcase the very best rally talent and later expanded to include leading lights from all disciplines of motorsport, the event’s high-octane demonstrations have for more than 30 years delivered a spectacle that appeals to every true motorsport fan by pitting some of the world's best drivers from a variety of disciplines and nationalities against one another. This very Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 became an integral part of that vision, playing a headline role at the 1989 Race Of Champions, held at the Nürburgring, and the 1990 Race Of Champions event in Barcelona. During those two events chassis 018 was driven by Björn Waldegård, Walter Röhrl, Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomqvist, Timo Salonen, Juha Kankkunen, Miki Biasion, and Carlos Sainz—in short, every World Rally Champion from 1979 to 1990. The car is accompanied by a bonnet (front hood) that has been signed by every one of the luminaries on that list, with the exception of Kankkunen (who had previously signed the side of the car instead!). This significant quattro arguably became the most recognisable car to feature in the Race Of Champions, demonstrated in no fewer than 13 events everywhere from Bangkok and Beijing to Miami and Barbados. While in current ownership the quattro has been prepared and maintained by former Audi Sport engineer Karl Hasenbilcher. Today, chassis 018 presents in fine mechanical fettle, having largely been preserved for the past three decades in the same specification in which Walter Röhrl, Stig Blomqvist, Hannu Mikkola, Ari Vatanen etc drove the car in ROC 1989 and 1990, save for a livery change. It must be noted that there are some significant deviations from its original Group B specification, including a replacement engine block (iron) which in 2021 benefited from a complete rebuild at the hands of Audi Sport’s legendary engineer Karl Hasenbilcher. Due to the complexities of the car’s unique current set-up, it is strongly recommended that interested parties speak with an RM Sotheby’s car specialist and ideally arrange for an in-person viewing. In total, just 20 examples of Audi’s outrageous Sport quattro S1 E2 were ever built, each a shining, flame-spitting beacon from the dying days of the last great epoch of rallying. Of the few S1 E2s to have become available, this car is arguably the most well-known to recent generations of rally fans, and in our opinion is the most exciting Group B restoration prospect for many years. Its next custodian will have the opportunity to either keep the car as it has been known and run in the Race Of Champions, or to return it to Works-standard Group B configuration. 1985 Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer.
