Firmly placed in Ferrari's history as one of its finest modern-era grand tourers, the 550 Maranello’s combination of elegant lines and legendary front-mounted 12-cylinder engine ensured these cars had the potential to become instant classics. Following in the footsteps of, and sharing its DNA with, the 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’, the 550 Maranello is inevitably compared to its forebear. However, few front-engined Ferraris have justified that comparison quite like the 550. Styled by Pininfarina, as was its illustrious predecessor, the 550 Maranello adopted similarly classical proportions, with a long bonnet, compact cabin and truncated tail. Traditional Ferrari design cues include a bonnet air scoop and hot air outlets behind the front wheel arches, recalling the great ‘Competizione’ Ferraris of the past, whilst the rear incorporates Ferrari’s characteristic twin circular lights. At the heart of any Ferrari lies its engine, and the 550 Maranello’s 48-valve, 5.5-litre V12 produces 485bhp at 7,000rpm. The powertrain is housed within a tubular steel chassis clothed in aluminium bodywork, whilst all-independent suspension incorporates dual-mode (normal/sport) damping, selectable by the driver and further complemented by speed-sensitive power-assisted steering. The 6-speed manual gearbox works in harmony with a broad torque curve, delivering power in a refined yet engaging manner and the combination of excellent weight distribution, composed road manners and almost 200mph mean that the 550 Maranello is a truly accomplished Grand Tourer. On offer here is a UK-supplied, right-hand drive example, classically finished in Rosso Corsa with a black leather interior, and indicating just 18,900 miles from new at the time of photography. First registered on 16th April 1998 to Mr Boland of Edinburgh via Glenvarigill Ferrari, the car was enjoyed by a further two keepers before being purchased by its current private owner in 2015. It's accompanied by its original tan leather book pack and a history file containing a selection of invoices showing maintenance over the years. It was most recently serviced by Supercar Rooms in 2023 at 18,814 miles, at which time the timing belts were replaced, with only a few miles since.
