1964 LOTUS ELAN 26R HARDTOP COUPÉ – FIA SPECIFICATION No. 26-R-22 – one of the rare, authentic Lotus Elan 26Rs with a documented racing history – and a unique original body. The Lotus Elan 26R is the legendary, factory-built racing version of the classic Lotus Elan roadster. It was developed by Lotus Components Ltd. specifically for FIA Group 4 racing to compete in the 1960s against significantly larger-displacement rivals such as the AC Cobra. The one offered here is one of only about 30 original Lotus 26Rs known to exist today. It was delivered in June 1964 as a Series 1 factory car to Swiss race car driver Karl Foitek in Zurich and was successfully raced by him in Switzerland until 1967. An exceptionally well-documented 26R with an authentic racing history, numerous contemporary photos, and extensive provenance. Particularly noteworthy is the original bodywork, modified by Karl Foitek in 1966/67, whose contoured wheel wells allowed for the use of the wider Series 2 wheels and tires—a configuration that is verifiably unique. The car now features a refurbished 26R chassis, has been extensively overhauled to racing specifications, and holds a valid FIA Historic Technical Passport (HTP) through the end of 2027. After spending 36 years in the U.S., where it competed, followed by about 10 years in the U.K., 26-R-22 returned to Switzerland in 2022. Since then, it has been maintained by the renowned Swiss Classic Lotus specialist, Schaffner Racing, and was most recently actively entered in Peter Auto’s prestigious Sixties Endurance Series as well as at the 2025 Le Mans Classic. The car comes with extensive historical documentation featuring numerous original photos, as well as many additional parts, including a second set of wheels with magnesium rims, a long-ratio differential, a straight-cut gearbox, the original steering wheel, and other small components. An authentic and historically significant Lotus 26R with Swiss racing DNA—FIA-certified, comprehensively documented, in excellent technical condition, and ready for its next outing on Europe’s major historic race tracks.
