  • 1982 Lancia Rally 037 Stradale Evo II

In the summer of 1979, the FIA announced their Group B rallying regulations, a radical change in the racing-car classification system scheduled to begin competition in 1982. With very little time to at hand for the project, Lancia quickly determined their Group B creation would require extensive development from a preexisting chassis and powertrain. Consequently, Abarth and Pininfarina were immediately tabbed to design, engineer, and homologate the resulting Lancia vehicle using the triumvirate’s most recent joint project as a basis. Fortunately, that “most recent joint project” was the Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo Gr.5—which was already well on its way to delivering Lancia the 1980 and 1981 World Sportscar Championships. Like the Beta Montecarlo Turbo Gr.5, Lancia’s new rally car was to utilize the central monocoque of the production Montecarlo road car with the engine and suspension carried on tubular subframes front and rear. Abarth’s lead racing engineer and “SE 037” project manager Sergio Limone determined that, unlike the transverse-engined Gr.5, the 037’s 2.0-liter, twin-cam inline four-cylinder engine would be mounted longitudinally to allow more flexibility in rear suspension design, as well as better access to the suspension and gearbox. And for better throttle response, the Gr.5’s exhaust-driven turbo would be replaced by a Roots-type "Volumex" supercharger—as favored by Abarth president Aurelio Lampredi. By April 1980, Abarth had completed the “SE 037” project, with Lancia and Pininfarina subsequently greenlighting production. FIA certification was met on 1 April 1982, and Lancia subsequently debuted the 037 Rally in competition at the Tour de Corse Rallye de France on 6 May. Although the new car finished a promising 9th overall, Lancia focused their 1982 season on intense development rather than a championship run. The following year saw Walter Röhrl and Markku Alén lead the works Martini Racing team to wins at Monte Carlo, Tour de Corse, Acropolis, New Zealand, and Sanremo en route to the 1983 World Rally Championship—Lancia’s fifth constructors’ championship and the final WRC title by a two-wheel-drive car. Echoing the world-beating pedigree of its racing sibling (and Gr.5 predecessor), the roadgoing 037 Stradale is truly a homologation special to experience for one’s self. Much admired for its nimble, razor-sharp handling, direct feedback, and commendable power band that always yearns for the raucous delivery of max boost to the rear wheels, the 037 Stradale is very easy to enjoy but exceptionally difficult to master. When combined with its giant supercharger, the car’s lightweight bodywork, spartan cabin, and close-ratio five-speed transaxle work to surround the driver with a sensory rapture which more than one automotive journalist has called “terrifying”. This particular Evolution II model is an exhilarating, no-holds-barred, exceptionally-impractical-yet-road-registered direct counterpart to the WRC Championship-winning Group B racecar. 037 RALLY STRADALE NUMERO VENTINOVE This 037 Rally Stradale is the 29th of 207 roadgoing examples produced by Lancia between December 1980 and January 1984. An accompanying history file clearly traces the car’s entire chain of ownership to the present, and much of Stradale 29’s provenance has been broadly documented in Piergiorgio Pelassa’s 037 Ultimo Mito, and Lancia 037: The Development and Rally History of a World Champion by Peter Collins. Delivered new to Italy in July 1982, Stradale 29 was subsequently imported to Switzerland on 15 March 1983 by a Fiat-Lancia agent, Marzio Cavadini, for his personal use. In 1984, Cavadini had Stradale 29 thoroughly improved with Abarth’s new “Evolution II” updates, which include an entirely revised supercharger, engine components, exhaust, intake, suspension, cockpit, and brakes. In this specification Stradale 29 is capable of more than 300 horsepower, nearly 50% more power than the standard 037 Rally Stradale. By 1986 this Stradale had passed from Cavadini to Andrea Beltrami of Biasca, then indicating 22,985 kilometers (~14,282 miles). Beltrami enjoyed the car for another 11,000 kilometers until 1992, when it was purchased by a dealer in Ponte Tresa and later consigned to auction on 30 April 1994. The original air conditioning and radio are believed to have been substituted for a fire suppression system during Cavadini—or Beltrami’s— previous ownership. Stradale 29 was thusly purchased by a Belgian collector and given the registration NHK 275 on 15 September 1994. Three years later, a move to the United Kingdom was in due order, and this Lancia was then treated to a comprehensive mechanical refresh completed in September 1998 at 33,867 kilometers (~21,040 miles) by MRH Engineering. After some 800 kilometers of exhilarating road use, this owner perhaps decided that Stradale 29 was a bit too exciting, and thusly sold it onward to the noted vintage racer Stuart Rolt on 10 May 1999. Rather ironically, Rolt’s family company, FFD, had created and developed the four-wheel drive technology which would see two-wheel drive cars like the Lancia 037 made universally obsolete in Group B and all other forms of championship rallying. Though as a former sportscar racer, and Director and Chairman of the prestigious British Racing Drivers’ Club (2004–2013), few were better suited than Rolt to exert mastery over this 037 Rally Stradale Evolution II, and he thusly retained it for the next 15 years. Under his careful ownership it was regularly maintained and occasionally enjoyed in amateur competition at several notable circuits between 2000 and 2014. Rolt finally passed the car to an American collector in late 2014. Some months later Motor Kraft in Noblesville, Indiana was commissioned to complete approximately $15,000 of expert sorting, which is highlighted by the fitment of two custom-fabricated gas tanks mounted just aft of the rear cabin bulkhead. A set of the factory-correct Speedline alloy wheels were also sourced during previous ownership, and today these are shod in BFGoodrich G-Force rubber. Acquired by the consignor in 2021 and now indicating just shy of 38,600 kilometers, (~23,985 miles) at time of cataloguing, Stradale 29 is a remarkable and well-documented Group B homologation special which succinctly echoes the all-conquering performance and thrill of its competition sibling. Where Stradale number 29 sets itself apart is that, if you were able to have both the means and indeed the desire, this is exactly what your money could have bought back in the heyday of Group B. Surely one can drive a rally car on pavement but, thanks to the era's homologation requirements, this truly is a rally car built for the road. 1982 Lancia Rally 037 Stradale Evo II RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1968 Ferrari 275 GTB4

"The two-cam 275 GTB was built in two series – the early ‘short nose’ bodywork giving way to the revised ‘long nose’ cars during 1965. Then, in 1966, it was replaced by the 275 GTB/4. The capacity of the Colombo powerplant remained at 3286cc but it now featured two overhead camshafts per bank and competition-inspired dry-sump lubrication. The four-cam layout had been used on the Scuderia’s 275 P2 prototype racers during 1965, but this was its first appearance on a Ferrari road car. With six carburettors as standard, it produced 300bhp at 8000rpm, and a bonnet bulge was added in order to accommodate the air cleaners. The model earned its motorsport stripes via a very small run of much-modified aluminium-bodied competition variants, examples of which won their class at Le Mans in both 1965 and 1966. Primarily, however, this was a high-performance road car, the finest expression of Ferrari’s GT know-how. This very special 275 GTB/4 stands apart from the rest. After a hiatus from driving and the public eye for more than 45 years, this example was extracted from the family home where it had been dry stored since its purchase in 1968. Unlike the barnfinds that spring to mind, this example was cleaned, covered and immaculately stored from just 2 years old until 2013. Supplied new by Luigi Chinetti Motors of Greenwich, CT/USA on September 9th 1968, the first owner, Edward A. Skae Jr part-exchanged his Lamborghini Miura and Maserati Ghibli resulting in a payment of $5,000 from the dealership! The Ferrari was optioned in Blu Scuro over Beige which it remains in to date. The car was collected by Harley Cluxton who hand delivered the car, having driven through Canada to Skae’s house. On August 20th 1969, the 275 was sold by Skae to Carl C. Gagliano of Milwaukee, WI/USA for the sum of $5,500. Carl never drove the car. It was cleaned and put away after its delivery, where it would sit for the next four decades. In 1996 Carl passed away and the car was passed down the family to his son Bill, an active SCCA member and racer. Through his racing, he would meet Peter Klutt who knew at once he needed the car. That time would come but not until 2013 after many years of negotiation. Klutt showed the car at the 63rd Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance, introducing the car to the global stage and receiving second in class honours for post-war preservation in class L-2. The car would be shown twice more by Klutt; firstly at the Cavallino Classic 2014 where it won the Vintage Preservation Cup for pre-1975 Ferraris. The car would also be shown the following year at 19th Annual Amelia Island Concours. Klutt sold the car in 2015 and since then, the car has resided with just two keepers, notably kept within prominent collections. Most recently the car has been treated to a thorough but sensitive mechanical overhaul, to ensure the car performs as intended. The car visited Motion Products Inc to receive a full inspection of each of the key components of the engine. The fuel pump, brake booster, brake master cylinder and clutch fluid resevoirs were carefully removed, inspected and cleaned. All fluids, pipes and lines were cleaned or replaced and the exhaust was replaced from the headers back. Finally the car received new tierod ends, ball joints and a four wheel alignment to ensure both usability and originality can be preserved. Arguably the most original 275 GTB/4 extant, this 275 presents as a fabulous and unrepeatable timewarp with just 17,200 Kilometers from new." 1968 Ferrari 275 GTB4 D.K. Arguably the most original 275 GTB/4 extant, this 275 presents as a fabulous and unrepeatable timewarp with just 17,200 Kilometers from new." Other Cars from D.K. • 1963 Jaguar E-Type

At its reveal at the Geneva Motorshow in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type caused quite a stir, a beautiful 150mph car available at half the price of an Aston Martin. Manufactured by Jaguar between 1961 and 1975, a combination of good looks, high performance, and competitive pricing ensured the car was an instant legend. In period, a Ferrari cost three times more and supplied less horsepower which established the E-Type as an icon not just of 1960s motoring but of British culture. The model became a great success for Jaguar; at its release Enzo Ferrari called it "The most beautiful car ever made". The model was made in three distinct versions which are now generally referred to as "Series 1", "Series 2" and "Series 3". A transitional series between Series 1 and Series 2 is known, unofficially, as "Series 1½". For collectors today, the earlier cars are the most desirable. As successful as the E-Type was with consumers, it was perhaps even more significant when it arrived at the track. The race car’s aluminium bodywork, independent suspension and disc brakes were evocative of the D-Type before it and were still incredibly advanced at the time. This made the E-Type a very well performing car, and it underwent several racing guises. The E-Type racing legacy began with the Low Drag Coupe and was followed by twelve, now eighteen, factory lightweights. Unfortunately, Jaguar did not fully commit to any 1960s racing endeavours, but thanks to third party efforts both in period and more recently, the E-type has a continued legacy not only as a stylistic and cultural icon, but also as a staple model in any historic racing paddock. This E-type was converted through the winter of 2008/9 to the semi-lightweight form it presents in today. Restored from the ground up, this example now benefits from elegant Opalescent Dark Blue coachwork over an oxblood red leather interior. With a power plant built by renowned marque specialists, Sigma Engineering, this semi-lightweight E-type benefits from a narrow angle head on an iron block, complete with triple 48 Weber carburettors and a wet sump. Recently converted to full race specification, although retaining all parts needed to be road legal, this E-type has been used most recently as an introduction to historic motorsport. Sold twice by DK Engineering before, this example has competed in two seasons of Equipe Libre, where the car made regular appearances near the top of the timesheets and on the podium. Run by the specialists Pursuit Racing, this example has had over £200,000 spent on it since 2020, including tireless and comprehensive maintenance as well as a full gearbox and differential rebuild. The engine setup affords the car a healthy 275bhp at the wheels, or circa 325-335bhp at the flywheel. Demonstrating a near peak in torque quite low down, this E-Type offers a linear torque delivery after 2000rpm, offering great usability and drivability. The build specification includes: Full ‘semi-lightweight’ specification with thin aluminium lightweight bonnet, doors, bootlid and hardtop Full race engine by Sigma Engineering Recently rebuilt differential New oil cooler Pursuit race suspension set up Aeroquip fuel lines Running legal MSD Tillet race seat Straight through and silenced options New quick-release steering wheel and boss Repainted for 2023 Accompanied by an extensive spares package including spare wheels, this E-type provides the opportunity to own a race proven semi-lightweight conversion, which also could easily be reverted to an enjoyable and presentable road car. • 1975 Porsche 911

After being meticulously cared for by its current owner for more than 30 years, with some carefully selected upgrades being applied along the way, this Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 is being offered for sale in exceptional condition. Having been registered on 11 November 1975 and sold via Dick Lovett Ltd in Swindon, it’s thought that this was the first Carrera 3.0 in the UK. In 1987, it was acquired by Mark Crook, who was clearly an enthusiast because it was the tenth 911 that he’d bought in ten years! By the time Crook bought it, the Porsche had already received an engine and gearbox rebuild, and it was then sold to its current owner in 1991. He embarked on a long process of restoration and sympathetic upgrades, and the history file includes a selection of photographs showing it being stripped to bare metal in preparation for a respray. The interior features upgraded Connolly leather trim, an integrated fire-extinguisher system, a map light, a pair of analogue stopwatches and an electric sunroof. The suspension has been lowered and uprated by marque specialist Steve Holgate, a short-shift kit has been fitted to improve the action of the Type 915 gearbox, and brakes from a later Carrera 3.2 have been installed. The specification also includes a front strut brace, upgraded cooling fan, anti-roll bars from a 911 Turbo, lightweight bumper supports, upgraded hydraulic chain tensioners, and a lightweight clutch. The Fuchs alloy wheels have recently been powder-coated and new Pirelli P7 tyres have been fitted, and there is a stainless-steel sports exhaust. Everywhere you look – from the interior to the engine bay – this Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 is superbly presented. As it was when it was delivered in 1975, it is finished in silver, and the headlamp surrounds are correctly chrome-plated – only from 1976 onwards were they finished in the same colour as the bodywork. As a relatively short-lived model, the Carrera 3.0 was built in much smaller numbers than the subsequent SC and Carrera 3.2, and right-hand-drive UK examples such as this are even rarer. This cherished car’s extensive history file includes invoices going back to the 1980s, with more recent receipts from respected specialists such as Autofarm, and it comes with its original Driver’s Manual and Maintenance Record. 1975 Porsche 911 The Classic Motor Hub If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1954 Jaguar XK120 OTS 1

According to its Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, the car shown here was manufactured on 15 March in 1954 and dispatched on 29 March to Hoffman, New York, USA. The car is presented as ordered new in the colour ‘cream’ with a red interior and a black soft top. It is a fast matching number ‘SE’ or Special Equipment model delivering 180 bhp instead of 160 bhp. At the end of 1999 the car was exported to The Netherlands in a good solid original condition but needing restoration (see picture). In the period 2000-2002 the car was frame up restored by Dutch Jaguar specialists Kolvenbach. The restoration is well documented with invoices and many pictures. Since the restoration the car has been well maintained by Jaguar specialists. The current owner bought the car in 2012 and enjoyed it very much! He participated with this car in – among others – the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2021 Gran Premio Nuvolari rally. He informs us that he always finished without any problems. This XK120 benefits from adjustable seats while the original seat parts are with the car. Very suitable for long drivers – 190 cm length without any problems. Furthermore the car comes with chrome wire-wheels, an extra cooling fan, fog lights, aluminium radiator, Halda tripmaster, side windows, tonneau cover and a black convertible roof. The dedicated owner spent approximately 20.000 Euro maintaining the car to a high standard over the last 12 years. The bodywork shows it has had a specialist high quality restoration and also the paintwork shows very well. The body is straight and panel fit is excellent. The engine starts on the button and shows a healthy oil pressure. The Moss gearbox is not the fastest but is a delight to use. The interior is in great condition and only has some wear on the foot carpets – the leather seats are in lovely condition. The result is a superb and fast XK120 ‘SE’ Roadster in very well prepared condition! The car is Dutch (EEC) registered and is a matching number & colour ’Special Equipment’ model which comes with a nice history file and several spare items as described above. Furthermore the car comes with a FIVA historic passport. 1954 Jaguar XK120 OTS Very Superior Old Cars If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The 550 was the first open top 12-cylinder since the 365 Daytona Spyder. It features a 5.5-liter V12 engine producing 478 horsepower, allowing it to reach 0-60 mph in around 4.3 seconds. With only 448 units built, it is a highly sought-after collector's car. The 550 Barchetta combines elegant design with raw performance, though it comes with a lightweight soft top, suitable only for low-speed use. Of the 448 Ferrari 550 Barchetta's produced, approximately 137 were allocated for the U.S. market. This limited number makes it a highly collectible vehicle in North America. This particular Barchetta is 1 of 31 finished in Giallo Modena and is a one owner example. Delivered new through Miller Motor Cars to its Connecticut owner, it still retains all of the original books, tools, window sticker and even the red hats with the leather brims that were given to the new owners. The hats are still in the original bag that has never been opend. This 4k mile example has been fastidiously maintained throughout its life at Miller Motor Cars at each interval and has recently undergone a full major service (Fluids, Seals, Belts, Hoses) at Ferrari of Naples where it also underwent a Classiche Certification. All of the stickies were corrected, the original alcantara still looks new and is not pilled or loose; this is a true investment grade example. These are the last open top, front engine manuals produced and will be highly sought after in the future. 2001 Ferrari Barchetta GT Motor Cars If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1963 Maserati Sebring

This matching-numbers Maserati Sebring was built at the Modena factory on 13 September 1963 and first registered on 23 October, and it has still had only four owners from new. Its original custodian was René Borgerhoff Mulder, who was based in Wassenaar – a small town just north of The Hague in The Netherlands. Borgerhoff Mulder was a wartime pilot who was reputedly a friend of Prince Bernhard, and competed in the Tulip Rally and Monte Carlo Rally on a number of occasions. He would regularly act as co-driver on such events for Hans Maasland, whose family owned the Maserati dealership in Voorburg from where Borgerhoff Mulder bought this Sebring. The documents from Maserati Classiche state that chassis number 01937 was originally finished in Blue Sera with red interior and had the five-speed ZF manual gearbox. It was also specified with the sought-after air-conditioning and Borrani wire wheels. Borgerhoff Mulder kept the Maserati until 1987, when it was sold to a Mr Stradmeier, who was a dentist and also based in Wassenaar. During his ownership, the car was restored by the Maasland dealership – a process that included a bare-metal respray and engine rebuild – and when he passed away it was inherited by his children. It changed hands again in 2011 but still didn’t move far, its next owner being based in Leiden, only a few kilometres up the road from Wassenaar. In 2016, the Sebring was sold to a UK-based enthusiast who had previously owned a number of Maseratis as well as a Ferrari 330 GTC. During his time with the car, it has been maintained regardless of cost by renowned specialist McGrath Maserati. Invoices totalling more than £40,000 from this period include a top-end rebuild of the engine. More recent expenditure includes an overhaul of the fuel system and air-conditioning, plus a new clutch and starter motor. The six-cylinder engine has been converted to run on triple Weber carburettors but the original Lucas fuel-injection system comes with the car should a future owner wish to have it refitted. Presented in its original colour combination, this Maserati Sebring has been fastidiously maintained and is offered for sale at The Classic Motor Hub with a Maserati Classiche Certificate and a copy of the original delivery note, plus a wealth of invoices and receipts. As one of only 348 Series 1 cars, it is a rare and distinctive choice of Italian Grand Tourer. MODEL HISTORY Maserati had achieved great motorsport success during the 1950s, but had built production road cars in only very small numbers until the 1957 introduction of the 3500GT. This stylish new model drew on Maserati’s racing experience but would be produced in far greater quantities than previous road cars. Originally launched as a 2+2 coupé, the 3500GT featured bodywork by Touring that was mounted on a tubular chassis. Beneath the bonnet was a 3485cc straight-six that was closely related to the marque’s competition engines and featured twin overhead camshafts, twin-plug ignition and a trio of twin-choke Webers. Upgrades applied during the model’s production run included a five-speed gearbox in place of the previous four-speeder and all-round disc brakes, while the 3500GTI gained a Lucas fuel-injection system that would also be used on the Sebring. First seen in prototype form at the 1962 Geneva Motor Show, the Sebring was based on the short-wheelbase chassis of the 3500 Vignale Spyder. Suspension was independent at the front via wishbones and coil springs, with a live axle and semi-elliptic leaf springs at the rear. Steering was by recirculating ball, and options included a Borg-Warner automatic gearbox, air-conditioning and a limited-slip differential. At more than £5000 in 1963, the expensive and exclusive Sebring occupied a rarefied spot at the top end of the 1960s GT market, with its few rivals including the Ferrari 330 GT and Aston Martin DB5. Autocar recorded a top speed of almost 140mph when it tested a Sebring and said: ‘Undoubtedly the jewel in this car is its splendid engine, which is virtually beyond criticism.’ A facelifted Series II Sebring was introduced in 1965, when the engine was enlarged to 3.7 litres. A 4-litre variant producing just over 250bhp was also offered, but sales began to fall away after the announcement of the V8-powered Ghibli and production ended in 1968. 1963 Maserati Sebring The Classic Motor Hub If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing

Outstanding special-order specifications from the factory, including NSL engine, sport suspension, and Rudge wheels No-expense-spared restoration by renowned 300 SL specialist Rudi Koniczek Refinished in iconic color scheme of Silver Metallic (DB 180) over red leather (1079) Retains numbers-matching body, NSL engine, front and rear axles, Rudge wheels with correct date codes, and period-correct Nardi steering wheel Well-documented with original manuals, copy of factory data card, invoices, and copies of previous registrations Accompanied by two-piece fitted luggage set and original steering wheel Since the dawn of automobile production, few cars continue to astound and capture the imagination of enthusiasts the world over like the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, with its intoxicating combination of stunning looks, space-age engineering, and incredible performance. Works-prepared racing variants earned many notable motorsport victories from 1952 through 1956, including at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Carrera Panamericana, the Liège–Rome–Liège rally, and multiple other championships in North America and Europe. Intrepid customers wishing to race their 300 SL Gullwing in period—as Mercedes-Benz intended—could choose from a bevy of competition equipment available for purchase directly from the factory. Among the most extreme options was an aluminum-alloy body, which lowered the car’s weight by 209 pounds. Adding more than 5,000 DM to the already sizable purchase price of the 300 SL, only 29 of the most committed and well-heeled privateers opted for it. Notably, not even Mercedes-Benz’s own racing department chose to run an alloy-body Gullwing. Instead, its works cars were outfitted just like the 1956 Gullwing offered here, with all the most desirable high-performance competition options, notwithstanding the alloy body. As testified by its original manuals and a copy of its factory data card, chassis 6500100 was special ordered by George H. Glass of Midland, Texas. At the time, Glass was stationed in Berlin with the US Army, and it was there that he took delivery of this exceptionally well-specified Gullwing on 8 May 1956. In addition to the special-order color combination of Fire Engine Red (DB 534) over black leather (953) with red gabardine fabric (L2), Mr. Glass specified competition upgrades, including five Rudge wheels, a sport suspension, and the upgraded 3.0-liter inline-six—known colloquially as the “NSL” engine, standing for “nockenwelle mit sonderteilen fur SportLiches,” or “camshaft with special parts for SLs.” Its race-bred internals include a high-lift competition camshaft, higher compression ratio, butterfly throttle valve, and recalibrated fuel distributor, all of which helped deliver 240 horsepower. The Gullwing was further fitted from the factory with sealed-beam headlights, the standard 3.64:1 rear axle, and rear bumper overriders. According to its confirmed body number—198040.6500096—this car is the 96th of 306 examples completed by in 1956. Upon delivery, Glass registered his new Gullwing with the US Army Occupation plate “6C15079.” One struggles to imagine just how jaw-dropping of a sight this car must have been on the streets of post-war Berlin. It is not clear when exactly the car returned to the United States, but it reportedly remained with a long-term California owner from the 1960s until that owner’s passing in the 1990s. The consignor, a friend of the former owner, purchased the Gullwing from his friend’s widow in the late 1990s and has retained the car ever since. While in the consignor’s care, the car was submitted to renowned 300 SL specialist Rudi Koniczek for a complete, no-expense-spared restoration. Invoices and work orders on file illustrate more than $92,000 CAD of work completed to fully disassemble the Gullwing, remediate any and all issues to the chassis, underpinnings, and body shell, re-chrome accessory trim, rebuild the transmission, and numerous other areas of focus. An additional $70,000 USD of invoices for work performed under the care of the previous owner indicate that 300 SL specialist German Auto Repair of Fresno, California fit a new red leather interior, windshield, and side windows, and rebuilt the numbers-matching NSL engine. Today, the car remains resplendent, masterfully refinished in the model’s signature color combination of Silver Metallic (DB 180) over red leather (1079). Comparing identification numbers of the various components with those listed on the factory data card confirms that the Gullwing retains its numbers-matching chassis, NSL engine, body, and axles, both front and rear. The car’s gearbox, number 7500698, is a replacement unit from 1957. Additionally, this outstanding 300 SL Gullwing is equipped with five Rudge wheels showing date codes corresponding to the car’s time of production, as well as two pieces of fitted luggage trimmed in red leather, and a period-correct, wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel. The original steering wheel is included in the sale. Boasting thrilling performance yet reliable enough to be enjoyed daily, the 300 SL Gullwing is a favorite for vintage rallies, long-distance touring, or even use as a daily driver on occasion. A beautifully restored example such as this, carefully maintained and boasting the most sought-after performance options offered by the factory, certainly proves why the 300 SL Gullwing is, without doubt, one of the sports cars of the century—an icon among post-war designs that will forever captivate enthusiasts and collectors fortunate enough to own one. 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1983 Lamborghini Countach 5000S

The Overview The Lamborghini Countach is the quintessential 80s car. Designed by Bertone’s Marcello Gandini, the same mastermind behind the Miura and the Espada, it had the wedge shape and pop-up headlights that helped define that automotive era. The Countach began with the LP400, which packed a 3.9L V12 with 370 hp. The LP400 was superseded by the L400 S, which downgraded the engine to 350 hp but added wider tires, its signature fiberglass wheel arch extensions, and an optional V-shaped rear wing. Another update came in 1982 in the form of the LP500 S, which increased the engine size to 4.8 L and updated the interior. The 500 S is oftentimes called a 5000 S in some markets, but it is not the same as the LP5000 Quattrovalvole that came after it. Only 321 examples of the 500 S/5000 S were ever built, sealing the rarity of these already highly sought-after cultural icons. This particular example of a 5000 S, Chassis # ZA9C00500DLA12593, was imported to the US through Rarewala Enterprises in California and sold to its first owner, who was located in Illinois. It originally wore a Blu Acapulco paint job over a Champagne interior. Through comprehensive research and speaking directly with Marcel Wallenburg of the Countach Registry, we do believe that the first and original owner of this car was Walter Payton, of NFL fame. Payton played for the Chicago Bears for a stunning 13 seasons, racking up numerous accolades and leading them to a super bowl victory in 1986. In 1984 he was given a Countach as a bonus by one of his biggest sponsors, the Kangaroo Shoe company, after breaking an NFL record for rushing yards. He was widely known for his iconic Countach, finished in a dark midnight blue color (Blu Acapulco) and wearing a license plate that read “WP 34”, which he would drive around Chicago, often getting himself in trouble for speeding. The Countach was still a rare sight in the US at this time as any cars that were brought into the country had to undergo a rigorous process to become federalized by companies such as Rarewala Enterprises. According to Marcel Wallenburg, there were only two 5000 S examples produced in Blu Acapulco that were imported into the US. The first was this car, shipped from the factory in July of 1983. The second example was not completed and shipped till early 1984. The first entry on the CARFAX for our car listed here, DLA12593, shows the first owner residing in Arlington Heights, Illinois in November of 1984. Walter Payton famously resided in Arlington Heights, located on the north side of Chicago, and would be seen driving his Countach around the area routinely. In addition, we uncovered a newspaper archive from the Journal Gazette of Mattoon, Illinois, dated Wednesday, October 14, 1987, discussing Payton’s car being up for sale at Lake Forest Sportscars with 19,000 KM and an asking price of $79,000. This coincides with the second CARFAX entry, which shows DLA12593’s second titled owner residing in Addison, Illinois, in December of 1987 and 19,000 registered kilometers. Another excellent supporting fact is that when Payton owned the car, he had aftermarket speakers installed in the door, which are visible in one of the iconic Kangaroo Shoe posters, with the driver-side door up and Payton perched on the sill. Mr. Wallenburg was kind enough to reach out to one of DLA12593’s previous owners, who resided in Germany and owned the car when it still wore its original Champagne interior, to ask if the car had these unique speakers when he owned it. It took a bit of digging to find some old photos, but sure enough, the same unique aftermarket door speakers were present on the car during his ownership. So while we do not have defacto proof, such as an old title with his name and VIN on it, the puzzle pieces do align to the extent that we are extremely confident that DLA12593 is the famous and long lost Walter Payton Countach. For a better breakdown of all the evidence surrounding our conclusion that DLA12593 is the famous Walter Payton Countach, please watch the video above or check out the pdf in our documents section, both of which break down all the evidence. It appears that Payton possibly traded the Countach for a Ferrari Testarossa at some point in 1987. It looks like the Countach resided in the Illinois area for another 2 years until 1989, when the car made its way to Texas before being exported to Europe, where it spent the next few decades and was repainted red and then white, likely sometime in the late 1990s. About 10 years ago, this Countach, now residing in Germany, underwent a full restoration and repaint. During the restoration process, the U.S. specification side reflectors were filled in. This change can be viewed by looking at the inside of the quarter panel from the trunk area and while it does not detract from the current state of the car, it does provide evidence that in the past this was a U.S. specification car. The comprehensive restoration involved the removal and complete dismantling of the engine, with every individual component being cleaned and refurbished or replaced before being reinstalled. The body was stripped down to bare metal before the current black paint job was professionally applied. The interior was also reupholstered in black leather to match the new color of the body, with the seats now sporting contrasting blue piping. Every step of the process was photographically documented and bound in a hardcover book that is included with the car. In May of this year, the engine and gearbox were serviced and certified to be in perfect working order before the car was later sent from Wang, Germany, to Lamborghini of Copenhagen in Copenhagen, Denmark. We imported it back to the US in August, where we treated the undercarriage to a steam cleaning and replaced the battery. As it sits, this is a low-mileage and well-sorted example of a pre-QV Countach. With a storied past and freshly sorted mechanicals, this is one of the better ones to own and provides a great avenue into Countach ownership. And given the potential provenance of being one of the more famous Countachs in history, having been likely owned by the great Walter Peyton, there is certainly an added value to this already wonderful example. Upon purchase, the owner will receive two keys and the book detailing this car’s restoration. The Details EXTERIOR Body And Paint The black paint, while not original to the car, was professionally coated roughly 10 years ago and is in nice condition overall. Throughout the front bumper and hood, there are some minor small chips, as well as a 1-inch long scratch on the top left portion of the hood and a 2-inch long scratch on the lower left portion of the lip. The wide fender arches at the rear of the car have suffered some peppering as well. The body, however, is very straight, and the panel gaps align nice and even as they should. Glass And Trim The glass appears to be all original to the car and presents nicely. The trim around the windows in some areas, such as the corners, has suffered a small amount of flaking, but nothing that takes away from the overall appearance of the vehicle. Wheels 3 of the 4 wheels are in very good condition showing no signs of rash or scuffs. The driver-side rear wheel has a few knicks that are documented in our photo set. Notable Flaws There are some scratches and knicks around the front end and a good bit of peppering on the rear fender arches. A larger scratch is present on the hood as well as on the left side of the front lip. INTERIOR Seats And Surfaces The interior presents in fantastic condition, having benefited from being redone during the previous restoration. The leather is soft and high quality to the touch around the sills and dashboard. The steering wheel is showing signs of use with a few small scuffs on the sides, outside of this no major scratches or tears to note. The carpeting is in good condition, and all surfaces fit and look as they should. Functionality And Accessories During our testing of the vehicle, it appears that all items in the interior work correctly as they should. The doors open and close with ease, and all switches, buttons, and knobs appear to function properly. The gauges read their requisite functions as they should. ENGINE BAY AND TRUNK Engine Bay The engine bay is correct and tidy. All of the hoses and lines are correct and in wonderful condition. The electronics appear to be all newer and in good order. Painted surfaces are smooth and free of blemishes. It appears that it was well attended to during the restoration and has been kept in top shape since. There are no signs of any issues either cosmetic or mechanical. Trunk Area The front trunk is fitted with the correct spare tire with rubber hold-downs and is in great condition. Painted surfaces appear appropriate, and electronics and wiring look well tended to and in good order. There is a battery cutoff switch located on the crossbar above the spare. A bit of dirt and grime hides in the corners, but nothing that detracts from the otherwise tidy front trunk. The rear trunk is clean and in good order. The carpeting retains good color and texture and fits well. There are no signs of any issues, past or present, here. Underside The underside appears consistent with the rest of the vehicle. Solid metal throughout, with painted surfaces showing as you would expect, given the mileage. There are no signs of any issues past or present here and overall suspension components etc., appear well looked after and in good order. MECHANICALS Engine The 4.8L V12 springs to life with no hesitation and sounds wonderful with the aftermarket exhaust that it is equipped with. Once up to temperature, it settles into a loud and rumbling but consistent idle. Out on the road it makes fantastic power with no flat spots or stumbles in acceleration. Transmission The shifter slots in the gates smoothly with little resistance and provide direct and tactile shifting feedback. The clutch is heavy in stereotypical Countach fashion, but the catch point and take-up feel appropriate. It holds power easily throughout all the gears and rev range, showing no issues to speak of. Brakes And Suspension The brakes bring the car to a stop in a controlled manner with no issues to note. The suspension is smooth but taut, with no odd noises or behavior. Tires The car wears the correct and hard-to-source Pirelli P Zero Assimetrico tires on all four corners. The sizing is, of course, staggered, with rears being 345/35/ZR15 and the fronts 255/50/ZR15. DOT date codes for the tires read late 2011 for production, but the tires are in excellent condition, with ample tread, solid sidewalls, and plenty of life left in them. 1983 Lamborghini Countach 5000S LBI Limited If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer.
