  • 1959 Jaguar Lister Costin

The glorious result of a collaboration between the successful ‘garagista’ Brian Lister and the expert aerodynamicist Frank Costin, the Lister Costin Jaguar is among the most beautiful 1950s sports-racing cars ever built. You see, while the car the Costin replaced, the so-called ‘Knobbly’, was extremely successful, its aerodynamic inefficiency meant it was never going to maintain its competitiveness in the face of a rapidly evolving technological landscape. Costin’s sleek wind-cheating alloy body combined with the proven tubular chassis and Jaguar six-cylinder drivetrain resulted in a car that could exceed more than 180mph – an extraordinary speed for the time. Only 12 Lister Costins were built, collectively earning success at the world’s greatest motor races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Sussex Trophy at Goodwood, Nürburgring 1,000KMs and Road America 500. And they were raced by the period most famous drivers, including Stirling Moss and Jim Clark. Today, the Lister Costin remains an extremely effective racing car in historic motorsport, with eligibility in a wide range of events around the world. Given that great period Lister Costins fetch seven figures in today’s discerning market, the small number of facsimiles built to the exact design and specification of those originals are seriously appealing to those wishing to mix it at the sharp end of the historic racing scene. Chassis number ‘BHL 183S’ is one such example. Chassis number BHL 183S In the lofty world of 1950s and 1960s competition Jaguars, there’s a family in the United Kingdom whose name resonates especially strongly and that’s the Pearsons. Founded by John Pearson in the early 1960s, Pearsons Engineering initially focused on keeping C-type and D-type Jaguars and Jaguar-powered Listers in rude health. In more recent years, the company – now run by John’s son Gary – has forged a strong reputation maintaining and restoring the very same cars and preparing them to the Nth degree for historic motorsport. In 2016, Pearsons Engineering set about building a new Lister Costin Jaguar, ensuring every last detail was identical to those original examples from the 1950s. The car was constructed to the exact 1959 technical specifications as the original, with Pearsons Engineering’s team of engineers painstakingly building the chassis and the body over the course of 18 months, referencing archive drawings and using period-correct techniques. Power is derived from a Crosthwaite & Gardiner-built dry-sump six-cylinder Jaguar engine producing 370bhp. Pearsons’ own wide-angle cylinder head and camshafts ensure it is among the most competitive Lister Costin Jaguars on today’s historic racing grid. Upon completion of the exhaustive project in September of 2016, this car was inspected by the Lister Motor Company and confirmed to be to ‘Lister Ex-Works Specification’. It was awarded ‘Sanction II’ status and duly assigned an historic ‘BHL’ chassis number, in this case ‘BHL 183S’. Being able to officially carry the Lister name and with this official ‘Sanction II’ status, ‘BHL 183S’ is eligible to compete at a wide variety of different historic motorsport events, including the Le Mans Classic and the Goodwood Members’ Meeting. Indeed, this beautifully elegant Lister has proven to be an extremely quick historic sports-racing car, particularly in the fiercely competitive events organised by Motor Racing Legends. At the Le Mans Classic in 2018, Gary Pearson and Andrew Smith put this Lister on pole position in Plateau 3. In 2021, Max Girardo and James Cottingham won the three-hour Royal Automobile Club Pall Mall Cup at Silverstone in emphatic fashion. And the pair followed that up in the same race in 2022, this time held at Donington Park, with class victory. On the small number of occasions it has been raced, ‘BHL 183S’ has always been prepared, entered and subsequently maintained by Pearsons Engineering, regardless of expense. Corresponding invoices on file attest to that. As such, the Lister is in overall excellent condition, with only a smattering of small stone chips on the nose commensurate with the longer-distance races in which it competed and small spidering to the paintwork on the bonnet contours closest to the engine. This stunning Lister Costin is now absolutely ready to race and more than capable of mixing it at the front of any of the many historic motorsport grids for which it’s eligible around Europe and beyond. • 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A by Sindelfingen

Few automobiles of the Classic Era could compare in prestige, grandeur, and performance to the Mercedes-Benz 540 K, inarguably one of the finest and most beautiful cars ever to come from Stuttgart. Engineered by Hans Nibel, the 540 K boasted a pushrod overhead-valve inline eight-cylinder engine, displacing 5,401 cubic centimeters and equipped with a double-vane Roots-type supercharger. When engaged at full throttle, the supercharger boosted horsepower to 180, enabling most any style to reach 100 mph. Chassis number 130945 is a very special car. As a relatively early example of the 540 K, it was thus delivered with the so-called first-series Cabriolet A body. One of the most attractive styles on the 540 K, the first-series Cabriolet A was essentially a copy of that used on the 500 K, to its benefit; it features the long, flowing open fenders that visually emphasize the power lurking between them, as well as double rear-mounted spares that further add an appearance of length and grace, and an extremely low windshield. The early 540 K Cabriolet A clearly recalls the lines of the great SSKs in a way that few other bodies do, and thus these are among the most desirable designs on this great chassis. The Daimler-Benz kommission sheet, a copy of which is on file, shows that chassis number 130945 was indeed delivered as a Cabriolet A, with the client of record having been Mrs. Maria Leyder of Stuttgart. Like many 540 Ks, the car eventually made its way to the United States in the post-war era, and was purchased, likely in the 1950s, by Don Rounds of Denver, Colorado. President of the Don M. Rounds Drilling Company, he was an internationally known oil driller and wildcatter, credited by his obituary as “one of the important oil figures who led the Rocky Mountain oil boom following World War II.” He also had fine taste in cars, as he also possessed a Duesenberg Model J in the same era. Following Mr. Rounds’s passing in 1969, the 540 K was offered by his estate; a description of the car, from the records of historian Jonathan Sierakowski and included in the file, notes that it had been mechanically restored but was likely still wearing its original finishes, with accompanying photographs showing it in apparently very good and intact condition. It was sold from the estate in 1970 to engineer Lowell E. Ledford of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who kept the car for 15 years, undertaking its first restoration. In his care it was awarded its Primary First Place, with a perfect 100 points, at the Classic Car Club of America Gulf Area Grand Classic in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1977. Mr. Ledford sold the car to Don Williams of the Blackhawk Collection in 1985. A color photograph published in the second volume of Jan Melin’s book, Mercedes-Benz: The Supercharged 8-Cylinder Cars of the 1930s, shows the car in this period, painted the red that was then de rigeur for any self-respecting 540 K. Subsequent owners included Japanese collector Nachiro Ishikawa, who maintained the car in California but occasionally journeyed with it to Europe; reportedly he drove it twice in the famed Monte Carlo Historic Rally, finishing 1st in the event in both 1991 and 1994. In the mid-1990s he sold the car to the longtime Mercedes-Benz procurer, Thomas Taffet, who would become its next longtime owner and caretaker. The car was sold from the Taffet collection in 2011, and following a brief period with a collector in the UAE, was returned to the United States and purchased for the present owner’s collection, in which it has remained since. Its older restoration was freshened cosmetically near the end of Mr. Taffet’s long ownership, and is still quite attractive overall, with its red and black finish an elegant contrast to the bright red interior, as proven by its exhibition at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2019. Both the chassis and engine number stamps are original, as is the firewall data plate. More recently, the car received a service in preparation for sale by the highly regarded firm of Fast Cars in Redondo Beach, California, invoices for which work are included in the file. A lovely example of the 540 K in its highly sought-after first-series Cabriolet A form, this car has the beautiful, graceful lines and robust performance that one seeks in this significant model. It would be an ideal, astute acquisition for the new owner seeking a supercharged Mercedes-Benz for touring or regional concours competition, where it would undoubtedly be warmly welcomed as it has by enthusiasts for half a century. It has all the appeal that it did in the hands of Mrs. Leyder in 1936. 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A by Sindelfingen RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster

At the 1957 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz introduced a convertible version of its celebrated 300 SL "Gullwing” Coupe. The new 300 SL Roadster was above all a more refined car than its older sibling, and its premiere foreshadowed the increasing focus the manufacturer would place on luxury cars over the ensuing decades. There was no denying the 300 SL's mechanical performance, which had decidedly improved in the Roadster; the updated six-cylinder engine received the competition camshaft used in the NSL racing coupes, good for a lift of 20 horsepower. Handling also benefited from a revised rear suspension with a lower axle pivot-point, minimizing the tendency for oversteer. Despite the added weight of chassis reinforcement required by an open model, the roadster was every bit the performance car that the Gullwing had proven to be. The roadster's overwhelmingly luxurious character, however, generally obscured its performance capabilities. With a convertible soft top, the model eschewed the uncomfortably hot cabin that bedeviled the Gullwing, and the roadster's redesigned tube frame afforded lower door sills, facilitating a far more dignified ingress and egress than its winged predecessor. The 300 SL Roadster was an improvement on the Gullwing in nearly every capacity and, with just 1,858 examples produced, has evolved into one of the marque’s most collectable models, a darling of both concours fields and vintage rallies. According to a copy of its original data card, the 300 SL Roadster offered here, chassis number 7500115, left the factory finished in Erdbeerrot (DB 543), the exceptionally unusual, wonderful color of Strawberry Red Metallic. Available only during the roadster’s first production year of 1957, Erdbeerrot is believed to have been applied to no more than a few dozen Roadsters, making it one of the rarest of all the 300 SL factory colors. The consignor strongly believes this to be the 39th 300 SL Roadster produced and the first to wear the finish. Leder Hellgrau (955)—Light Gray Leather—with a matching Hellgrau convertible soft top completed this car’s sensational livery. Records further indicating it was equipped with instruments in miles, sealed-beam headlamps with separate parking lights, a Becker Mexico radio with Hirschman antennae, and a 3.89:1 rear axle ratio for superior acceleration. Following its completion on 12 August 1957, chassis 7500115 is documented as having been sold to its first owner, William Stoff of New York. Per ownership history listed in the Gullwing Group, Stoff is reported to have enjoyed his Roadster sparingly before selling to George Parker of Greenwich, Connecticut in 1957. Parker and his family would go on to cherish their 300 SL for the better part of the next 50 years before selling it in 2004 to Timothy Mullins of Charlotte, North Carolina. Mullins then entrusted the car to world renowned 300 SL specialist Rudi Koniczek of Rudi & Company in Victoria, British Columbia for what would become a three year, bare-metal, nut-and-bolt concours restoration. Scores of photographs document Rudi & Company’s painstaking process, including a full rebuild of all mechanical components, a new wiring harness, and bare metal respray in factory-correct Strawberry Red Metallic. A tan leather interior and convertible soft top were chosen in place of the factory light gray trim. Since the restoration’s completion in 2007, the car has seen only 1,134 miles of road use, now showing just 6,195 miles at cataloging. Importantly, the car presently retains its original chassis, engine, body, front axles, and rear differential as confirmed by stampings/castings and a copy of its original data card. Completing its highly desirable presentation, chassis 7500115 is furnished with a full assortment of 300 SL Roadster accoutrements, including a set of fitted luggage, owner’s manual and service book in a vinyl pouch, factory brochures, Osram Autolampen kit, tool roll, jack, both sets of original keys, and correct four-bar tire-pressure gauge. This exceptional Roadster also features five original wheels date-coded to May 1957. In preparation for use in the 2023 Colorado Grand, the car was treated to a more than $11,000 service by R.W. Fabrications of Phoenix, Arizona, which included mounting a new set of Vredstein Sprint Classic tires. Hailed as one of the greatest open sportscars of all time, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster stands as a testament to one of motoring’s most glamorous periods. Boasting wonderful performance, and reliable enough to be enjoyed daily, the 300 SL Roadster is an enthusiast favorite for vintage rallies, long-distance touring, or even regular use at one’s summer home. This stunning example stands apart with its concours-quality restoration and restoration and sensational, rare factory color. 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright At the 1957 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz introduced a convertible version of its celebrated 300 SL "Gullwing” Coupe. • 1979 Ferrari 400i

Of its era, Ferrari’s 2+2 grand tourer platform was a curious step away from its spectacular line-up of thoroughbred sports cars. Leonardo Fioravanti imagined the 365 GT 2+2 while designing cars for Pininfarina, introducing strong angular shape lines in a departure from the car’s direct predecessor, the 365 GTC/4. The new 2+2 formula allowed Ferrari to carve a niche that moved away from existing out-and-out grand tourers, such as the 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta. The 2+2 grand tourer evolved over time, rebranded as the 400 in 1976 and updated with a fuel injected engine in 1979, then badged as the 400i. The fuel injected car came in a bid to comply with global emissions standards. The same 4.8-litre Tipo F101 V-12 of the earlier 400 was instead fed through a Bosch K-Jetronic system, replacing the six-fold Weber carburettor set-up. The shift to fuel injection resulted in a sacrifice of 30 horsepower, but the thundering V-12 was still good for 310 horsepower and a top speed of 240 km/h—ideal for effortlessly delivering cross-continental journeys in seamless comfort and style as its manufacturer intended. The automatic version of the 400i was the more popular choice among customers, with 883 units made compared to the five-speed manual’s 422. The 400i offered for sale here was produced in 1983, configured in right-hand drive. The Ferrari is among the first Prancing Horse-badged cars to join The Factory Fresh Collection and has spent most of its life in storage. The odometer reads only 2,743 miles at the time of cataloguing, and the 400i retains its matching-numbers engine. Presented in a smart dark blue over cream colour scheme, the timeless styling of this attractive 400i will no doubt appeal to Ferrari fans and grand tourer enthusiasts alike. 1979 Ferrari 400i RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1970 Opel GT 1900

The Americans had their Corvette, a beefy and elegant sports car as a counterpoint to the ubiquitous Ford Mustang. Apart from the Porsche 911/912, the Germans didn't really have a thing for real sports enthusiasts. Until the Opel GT turned the established middle class on its head. The strongly waisted Flounder stands like no other car for the fact that racy sports cars can be affordable. Suddenly it no longer had to be a Porsche that made the children's jaws drop on the street corner. The lightning bolt stood out like no other and was a sign of a new generation of cars. Anyone who found a Kadett too stuffy and an Ascona too embarrassing fell in love with the mercilessly desirable design of the Opel GT, even though, according to Opel, series production was not planned (it was initially said). Things turned out differently. In the fall of 1968, the Opel GT, which was advertised with the slogan “Only flying is more beautiful,” entered the automotive world. Technically, the car was based on the Kadett B, from which the 60 hp engine also came. But this weaker version only remained in the program for two years. The car with the 1900 S engine from the Opel Rekord C became a successful model. Because the four-cylinder engine with an output of 90 hp did not quite fit under the flat hood, it was given a characteristic bulge at the front right - which only made the design even more extravagant made more casual. Incidentally, Opel bought the bodies from a French manufacturer; the GT was manufactured in the Bochum plant. By the end of production in the fall of 1973, 103,373 examples had left the factory. The majority of the vehicles, namely exactly 84,000 models, were exported, primarily to the USA. There the crisp Opel made a career as a miniature Corvette. In general, with the GT, Opel demonstrated a sense for young automotive talent. The 60 hp version was initially available from 10,780 marks, the more powerful 90 hp model cost 11,880 marks. When the small GT was phased out, the GT Junior was introduced in 1971. The model was technically completely identical to the normal GT, but was offered significantly cheaper, namely from 10,500 marks. All chrome trim was eliminated and replaced with parts painted matt black. GT Junior drivers also had to do without vent windows, corduroy seat covers, some cockpit instruments and carpet mats. But that didn't dampen the enthusiasm for the car. On the contrary: the matt black accents looked good on the car. The end came suddenly in the fall of 1973. The French body manufacturer had been bought by Renault and stopped deliveries; In addition, stricter US regulations would have required a thorough renovation of the GT. Opel then had the model discontinued without replacement. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION Beautiful Opel GT in a unique color combination that makes the already desirable coupé an absolute eye-catcher. The Americans loved the Mini-Corvette, so it's no wonder that half of the production went to the USA and, depending on the state, it was able to survive to this day without major restoration work, unlike vehicles from our latitudes. This wonderful GT came from Florida some time ago and has obviously seen very little rain and certainly no snow or salt. In contrast to many vehicles from Europe, which have been restored more poorly than fairly and have a lot of poorly fitting fiberglass parts installed, this car is still made entirely of sheet metal. Logically, after over 50 years, the paint and upholstery could no longer keep up with the good body and were renewed a few years ago in high quality and show no major signs of wear either inside or outside. Before the full TÜV report was carried out, the GT received some wear-and-tear repairs in Germany, such as a new aluminum radiator, complete brakes, seals, tires, tank ventilation, etc. Plus new ATS rims with wide tires, which make the little coupé appear muscular. All chassis bushings were recently replaced with red PU bushings. This means that the car is not necessarily suitable for people with spinal disc injuries, but it sits like a proverbial board on the road. The well-known 1900 engine from many Opel models sounds and feels perfectly healthy, the transmission shifts smoothly and the entire electrical system works, right down to the well-fitting and smoothly functioning pop-up headlights. The chassis is sporty and firm and the steering is direct. Thanks to the technology adopted from large-scale production, the supply of spare parts is good. The floor pan and chassis came from the Kadett B. The reliable 1.9 liter engine was taken from the Rekord C. Overall, a rare and at the same time very attractive GT that is difficult to find these days. 1970 Opel GT 1900 DLS Automobile If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1952 Aston Martin DB 2 Vantage

The prototype DB2 appeared as one of three Aston Martins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1949. The production model of the DB2 was first shown at the New York Auto Show in April 1950. Although demand was high, examples 2 to 4 were reserved for use in the 1950 24 Hours of Le Mans. The cars took the first two places and were entered again in 1951. The success brought fame to David Brown’s ascendant company and convinced its management to build a series of cars specifically designed for racing, starting with the DB3. Only 238 Vantage specification cars of the Aston Martin DB 2 were produced between 1950 and 1953. According to the available documentation, the car presented here was completely “frame-off” restored with great attention to detail by an Aston Martin specialist down to the last screw. In order to improve the driving characteristics, the technology was extensively optimised, taking into account the originality. A comprehensive photo documentation of the restoration process, a Heritage Certificate and the Built sheet are available. The vehicle convinces by a very high restoration standard with outstanding driving characteristics. Equipment 4-speed manual gearbox, 3 Weber twin carburettors, sports suspension, optimised rear axle with limited slip differential, aluminium brake drums, reinforced spoke wheels in 5″ x 16″ inch, and much more. • 1998-ferrari-550-maranello-4

The Cultivated Collector’s 1998 Ferrari 550 Maranello, Chassis 12801, is a stunning example of the breed - finished in the beautiful color of Grigio Titano, is complemented by the interior which is wrapped in deep Blu Scuro leather. Having covered a mere 17,700 miles from new, 12801 benefits greatly from loving previous ownership, seeing consistent servicing and having just been serviced by marque specialist Jim McGee of Pocono Sports Car. This 550 Maranello is in exceptional condition throughout, a turn-key example of the ultimate modern Grand Tourer that is ready to enjoy on the open road. The early 1990’s saw Ferrari ignite a return to their roots by reintroducing and reviving the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout that had been synonymous with the brand’s early success, yet absent from Ferrari's lineup since the 365 GTB/4 Daytona in the early 1970s. Riding on the heels of the electrifying 512M, the all new 550 Maranello would triumphantly carry the torch forward for V12 powered Ferrari cars. Exuding the brand’s deep and rich history, the 550 Maranello was proudly named after Ferrari’s home, the beautiful city of Maranello, Italy. Ferrari entrusted design to Pininfarina, with the project being led by Lorenzo Ramaciotti, the exterior featured a sleek and timeless design emphasized by clean flowing lines and muscular proportions akin to a classic GT car, while the interior exuded a stunning leather clad center console encapsulating both driver and passenger. Excellence was not skin deep, however. Nestled in the tubular steel space frame, the 550 Maranello boasted the best Ferrari had to offer in the form of the F133A, a front-mounted 5.5-liter V12 engine producing 478 horsepower and 419 lb-ft of torque, all being sent to the rear wheels through an engaging 6-speed manual transmission. The 550 Maranello boasted marvelous handling and dynamics, thanks to its balanced weight distribution and highly-tuned double wishbone suspension, providing occupants with a comfortable and luxurious interior with leather upholstery and modern amenities, placing it firmly as the class leader for long-distance driving and grand touring. During its production run from 1996 to 2001, an estimated 3,000 examples left the Maranello based manufacturing facilities. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright The Cultivated Collector’s 1998 Ferrari 550 Maranello, Chassis 12801, is a stunning example of the breed - finished in the beautiful color of Grigio Titano, is complemented by the interior which is wrapped in deep Blu Scuro leather. The S4s was the final development of the four-cylinder, 2.2-litre turbocharged Esprit and this magazine-featured, Calypso Red, low-mileage example was an original Press Car. The final development of the four-cylinder, 2.2-litre turbocharged Esprit, the S4s (the factory used a small 's') was born from Lotus customers telling the company that they wanted their Esprit to be as fast as the ultra-quick and raw Sport 300 but with the comfort and flexibility of the standard S4. 367 were built in total. This particular Lotus Esprit S4s was one of the original Press Cars and was featured in the April 1995 edition of Autocar magazine, being put through its paces by Andrew Frankel who was Road Test Editor at the time quoting that 'Britain only built one mid-engined supercar and you're looking at it', high praise indeed for a car at the time which Andrew described as one that 'deserves your respect'. Some 30 years later we suggest that remains true, with looks that still request your attention and turn heads wherever you go. Finished in Calypso Red with a Black Alcantara interior, this example was first registered to Lotus Cars Limited in March 1995 and retained by them until being transferred to its first private custodian, a Mr R McCarthy of Castle Coombe in April 1996. Remaining in outstanding condition throughout with an impressively low 25,290 miles and a large history file that outlines the intervening years, we suggest that this particular Lotus would be a welcome addition to any Lotus or sports car collection and as such we welcome and encourage your early inspection to confirm that all your requirements are fulfilled. It's also pleasing to note that the original, magazine-featured registration number, M181 BEX, remains assigned, underlining the car's history and lineage. 1995 Lotus Esprit S4s Iconic Auctioneers Ltd If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer.
