- 1956 Porsche 356 A 1600 Speedster by Reutter
Correspondence with Porsche shows that this US-specification 356 A Speedster was built in June 1956. Originally finished in white over a red interior and equipped with a 1600 S air-cooled, flat-four engine numbered 61934 (according to a copy of the Kardex) it was imported to New York via Max Hoffmann’s famed distributor. After a stint in Jacksonville, Florida, the repainted car was advertised for sale in the 21 July 1986 edition of Antique, Custom & Sportscar Trader. Described as having had a “complete professional restoration, original and correct, red lacquer, black interior”, the asking price was $21,000. It was purchased by The Aumann Collection, who smartly negotiated the price down to $19,000, before enjoying the Speedster in Sarasota. Chassis 82351 was then shipped from Miami to Bremerhaven, Germany in May 1994. Complemented by a history file, tool roll, tonneau cover, and spare wheel, this 356 further benefits from long-term custodianship and is ready to be driven in its current form or is a contender for renewed restoration. 1956 Porsche 356 A 1600 Speedster by Reutter RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1995 Porsche 911 GT2
The vehicle offered here is without doubt one of the most extraordinary Porsches we have ever offered for sale. The term automobile is probably out of place. A work of art would be a much better description. With only 11 units built, a Porsche 993 GT2 EVO is already one of the rarest models ever built in Zuffenhausen or Weissach. The example shown here, however, is an absolute one-off. Built by Porsche to celebrate the presentation of the GT2 EVO at the 1995 IAA in Frankfurt. For this purpose, the car was given a unique paint job. A masterpiece in the so-called ”Harlekin” design was created in elaborate manual work to show what is feasible on the Porsche stand - and not only in technical terms. Nowadays, there would only be one place for such a unique specimen, namely the Porsche Museum. In 1995 this was different. One of the most important and influential customers of the brand made a decision at the sight of this car, from which he would not be dissuaded. This GT2 EVO was to find its way into his private museum. And so it happened that Porsche actually sold the car. This process was undoubtedly as unique as the car itself and is unlikely to have been repeated in this form a second time in the company’s history. The new owner regarded the Porsche as a pure work of art, lavishly displayed in his private collection. Untouched in 25 years - although the car was kept ready for use at all times. It is thanks to this meticulous care that, at the time of its purchase by our company in 2020, this unique specimen arrived in our halls in fully operational condition. For the following 3 years, the car remained in our in-house collection before the decision was made to release this unique piece for sale. The statement ”a unique opportunity” is clearly given too lightly in our industry these days, in this case it seems almost an understatement. To be able to call this car your own is simply like reaching the Olympus as a Porsche collector. 1995 Porsche 911 GT2 JamesEdition B.V. - 1953 Alfa Romeo 1900 CS Pinin Farina Berlinetta 1
Launched at the Paris Motor Show in 1950, the Alfa Romeo 1900 was a significant advance for the growing company. The 1900 was the first Alfa Romeo designed and built for production assembly and the first Alfa Romeo available in left-hand drive. Offered in four-door Berlina and two-door Sprint variants, the 1900 was initially powered by a 1,884cc, 4-cylinder twin cam engine producing a capable 90 horsepower. Racing victories in the Targa Florio and Stella Alpina rallies lead to Alfa Romeo marketing and promoting the 1900 as “the family car that wins races”. In 1951, Alfa Romeo released the shorter 2.5-meter wheelbase 1900C, followed quickly by a more powerful engine option, the 1900 “Sprint”. The Sprint was equipped with a bored-out 1,900cc engine producing 100 horsepower. Approximately 100 of the performance-oriented, short-wheelbase 1900s were delivered with the more powerful Sprint engines to famed Italian coachbuilder Pinin Farina. Pinin Farina designed the very elegant coupe body known as the 1900 “Corto” Sprint. The unique platform design and performance engine enticed other notable coachbuilders including Touring, Zagato, and Bertone, however the Pinin Farina design, with its pure lines and ideal proportions, delivers a handsome and balanced profile ideally paired with state-of-the-art twin-cam performance. Under former ownership, the prior owner purchased this 1900 CS from an esteemed Northern California collector to accompany multiple highly prized vehicles in his personal collection. Having enlisted expert Raffi Najjarian of The Pit Stop, a great deal of work was performed on the car’s mechanical components including an engine rebuild beyond CSS specifications. This rebuild included the installation of a CSS crankshaft, larger pistons, dual Weber 44 DCO carburetors feeding into an Abarth intake manifold, and new exhaust. Additional work included the installation of an oil cooler, electric fuel pump, new fuel tank, and a supplementary electric cooling fan, all of which further required upgrading the electrical system with new wiring. Substantial time was further spent improving the car’s driving dynamics. Inclusive of the suspension rebuild, all new Alfin drum brakes were installed, while the front A-arms were updated with 2500 series units and a rebuilt steering box. The original column mounted four-speed transmission was replaced with a floor mounted five-speed gearbox and a new clutch. As the mechanical work was completed, the engine bay was detailed and carefully finished using as many authentic components as possible. In 2018, the car was offered for sale by Fantasy Junction. A few years later, the owner passed away and the car was auctioned by Bonhams in 2020, at which time, the current and consigning owner purchased the car. Under current ownership, this Alfa Romeo has benefited from new leather seat reupholstery, new carpet, a valve job for the twin cam head, general mechanical freshening, and excellent paint correction to high driver level. As an added performance feature, this 1900 is outfitted with exhaust cutouts which can be engaged manually from behind the driver’s seat. These levers bypass the mufflers delivering a more vigorous exhaust note. Today this handsome Pinin Farina 1900 CS presents with a quality high gloss vivid red finish ideal for events and tours. Panel fit is generally good, in keeping with period construction. The doors open and shut easily, while the lightweight alloy hood and trunk raise and lower without issue. A few superficial stone chips are visible in the front facing areas, though none affect the overall high driver level presentation. The windshield and side glass, many of which bear the original glass Securit brand marks, present nicely including the unique sweeping wrap around rear window. The grille and eyebrow openings were re-chromed during the refresh, still offering excellent reflections and smooth finish. The rear bumpers and chrome trunk handle are also very nicely presented. The absence of further garnish molding and chrome trim is a welcome relief from often overdone cars of this period. In keeping with the performance theme, the car is finished with beautiful Borrani wire wheels. Under prior ownership, all four wheels and the matching spare wheel were rebuilt and powder-coated in silver finish. The wheels are finished with correct chrome plated dual ear knock-offs with correctly sized 2019 date-coded Michelin tires. The interior reflects the performance lineage of these exceptional cars with a focus on spirited driving. The seat supports were refinished under current ownership along with new carpet. The newly reupholstered leather covered rally-style Zagato seats complete the performance picture, giving excellent lateral support, particularly when compared to the original style bench seats. The cloth headliner and sun visors are clean and taut, while the rear parcel shelf and leather straps offer a nice finishing touch to the interior. The upgraded 5-speed manual gearbox is very well positioned, wrapped in a leather boot, and topped with a polished alloy shift knob. The dashboard features correct instrumentation with clean lenses, crisp numbers, and handsome lettering. A safety kill switch is located under the left side of the dash. The interior is handsomely finished overall with a period correct flat Nardi wooden steering wheel, accented by the Alfa Romeo center insignia. The trunk is nicely finished in satin black with a proper textured floor mat, and a distinctive optional touch – a handheld Marchal spotlight, convenient for rally road repairs, particularly effective in evening or sunset events. The engine compartment has been nicely maintained since the rebuild and recent valve job. Correct finishes, authentic parts, proper lines and materials, and uniform finishes now display slight patina resulting from modest use. During the rebuild, the engine was upgraded with twin 44DCO (No. 13 and 15) Weber carburetors and an Abarth intake manifold. A FISPA air cleaner was installed along with the Weber carburetors. The undercarriage presents with no evidence of structural compromise and while not detailed for show, all components are clean, dry, and tidy. Of note, the upgraded 2500 series front suspension and shock absorbers add to the handling and performance of this car. The car starts with ease and warms to a nice throaty idle. Driving manners are quite good under general road use, but greatly enhanced with the 5-speed gearbox, improved front suspension, and power upgrades to the engine. The engine operates with good oil pressure and proper running temperatures. The brakes operate confidently with good pedal pressure and the steering is generally good but has slight play at top dead center. The driving experience in this Alfa Romeo 1900 benefits from the upgraded floor mounted 5-speed with ratios ideally spaced for road or highway use. Accompanying the car is a set of tools wrapped in a period correct cloth roll, a restored jack, a Marchal spotlight, and a matching spare wire wheel. This is a great opportunity to acquire an event eligible rare Pinin Farina bodied Alfa Romeo combining professionally refined mechanical improvements and delightful visual presentation, enhanced by thoughtful performance upgrades. For those who admire hand-built coachwork, state of the art engineering, and exciting driving, this Alfa Romeo 1900 CS is sure to deliver ongoing rewards uniquely delivered in vintage automobile ownership experiences. 1953 Alfa Romeo 1900 CS Pinin Farina Berlinetta Fantasy Junction If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1964 Jaguar Mk2
Racing driver John Coombs' name will forever be linked with that of Jaguar, his MkI and Mk2 saloons being at the forefront of British saloon car racing throughout the late 1950s/early 1960s. He gave up competitive driving to concentrate on running his Guildford-based Jaguar dealership, making the benefit of his experience available to customers, and over the next seven years they modified between 30 and 40 Mk2s. Essentially, the Coombs conversion consisted of an uprated engine matched by steering and suspension modifications, but the company offered a plethora of options from which customers could choose. They included an additional fuel tank, a wood-rim steering wheel and a chrome plated boot rack. Coombs would also modify the rear wheel arches, removing the spats and making up rolled edges to match the profile of the front wheel arches. The primary objective of this was to improve access for wheel changing during motorsport events, but the modification improved the appearance of the car so much that it is surprising Jaguar themselves did not adopt the modification for production cars. Not all the Coombs cars had the same state of tune, but the typical engine had 9:1 compression pistons, a lightened flywheel and a different carburettor air-intake system. The whole bottom-end assembly would be balanced and the cylinder head would be gas-flowed. A number of Coombs-style cars feature a louvred bonnet but this was not an advertised option in the early days. The classic 3.8-litre Mk2 offered here has been restored and rebuilt in the style of those 1960s John Coombs cars. A Jaguar/Daimler Dating Letter on file reveals that chassis #233517 was originally finished in Jaguar Dark Blue with light blue trim (the same as it is today) and was retailed through Henlys, being first registered as HPA 700C, the registration it wears today. The car's history is not known prior to 1992 when it was acquired by a Mr Vann and it was he that commissioned its restoration. The no expense spared rebuild was commenced by marque specialists, Three Point Four, and completed in November 1997 by Scott-Moncrieff. Its specification includes a rebuilt, balanced and tuned engine, 2" SU carburettors on matching manifolds, front anti-roll bar, Koni shock absorbers, uprated coil springs at the front, 'Coombs'-type rear wheel arches, 'Coombs'-type chromed wire wheels a Moto-Lita wood-rimmed steering wheel, Pioneer stereo system and discreet period style circular mirrors to the window frames. It's believed that the car was subsequently re-trimmed by renowned experts Suffolk & Turley. The Jaguar remained with Mr Vann for the next 20-or-so years before being sold to the owner prior to our vendor who appears to have fastidiously maintained it by the number of Red Triangle bills on file. Included in the fascinating history file are many bills from Scott-Moncrieff for the rebuild and also a photographic record of the restoration, old MOT Certificates, a copy of a sales invoice dated 22nd April 2016 from Runnymede Motor Company and more recent Invoices from Red Triangle for various works on the car during 2016/2017. Most recently this car last sold in July 2020 at auction for £51,750 but appears to have never been driven by its new owner (a US-resident) and committed to secure storage. The Jaguar has recently emerged from those four years of storage so an element of recommissioning is to be expected. - 1997 Subaru Impreza WRX STi Type R
One of only 20 homologation cars built by Prodrive for the 1997 WRC (12 Group A, four Group N and four Recce). Used as a 'recce' car by Indonesian Rally champion, Tonny Hardianto, in his World Championship campaign, and returned to the UK in 1998. The MY Impreza WRX STI Type R was introduced to the Japanese Domestic Market in January 1997 and remained available until August of that year. Utilising the two-door bodyshell it had several features aimed directly at homologation for rallying. This is the vehicle that Prodrive used for its Group N customer cars and was also the donor vehicle for the Group A WRC in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. The two-door body is slightly stronger/stiffer than the four-door RA and a solid rear bulkhead increased torsional stiffness even further. Apart from the bodyshell, differences between the Type R and the JDM four-door STi models included a short-ratio gearbox, an adjustable Electromechanical Center Differential (DCCD), the absence of ABS, Intercooler water spray, two opposed pistons on the rear brake calipers (instead of four) and some cosmetic differences like rear tinted glass, a radio/aerial delete, Oxford Blue dash clocks and the 555 SWRT seats. The Type R was also the first Impreza STi to have a high-rise rear spoiler and colour-matched side skirts, the standard STI models only benefitted from the larger spoiler and coded side-skirts the following year. This Type R, GC8056980, was one of the 20 cars provided by Subaru in early 1997 for their rally team, Prodrive, to use for their 1997 and 1998 World Rally Championship campaign. Prodrive worked their magic on this select group of Subarus and converted them to WRC-spec cars for team and customer entries plus a small number of Recce cars. We understand that 12 were prepared to Group A regulations, four for Group N and four as Recce cars. P800 WRC was built for recces and was purchased, alongside his WRC car, by Indonesian Rally champion, Tonny Hardianto, as part of his World Championship campaign. It was built with bash guards to protect the engine, final drive and fuel tanks, fitted with a full Kevlar underfloor and the standard ‘red top’ engine was thought to be sufficient at 275bhp. We understand that it was used on just two events, the 1997 WRC event in Indonesia and the Indonesian National Rally. The cars were on a ‘Carnet’ and returned to the UK in late 1997 to be sold. The renowned Bill Gwynne snapped up this leading technology pair, selling this car to the Enduro biker and rally driver, David Rayner, who registered it as B2 WRX and kept it as an adrenaline-generating road car for over 40,000 road miles over nearly ten years. Shortly after his purchase, our vendor arranged for WRC specialists, Autosportif Engineering, to rebuild the engine and to check the rest of the package. It remains exactly as it was built with the exception of a 'Group N' baffled sump and a longer final-drive suitable for UK-motorway speeds. The car comes with a second set of wheels, engine bash guard, spare low-ratio gearbox and final-drive together with a standard exhaust system. It will have a fresh MOT prior to the sale and is accompanied by its V5C, items of correspondence and the usual invoices etc. This is a rare car indeed, one of only a few hundred MY97 Type Rs, one of only 20 selected by the factory to be sent to Prodrive, and one of only four built to a ‘recce’ specification. 1997 Subaru Impreza WRX STi Type R Iconic Auctioneers Ltd If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright One of only 20 homologation cars built by Prodrive for the 1997 WRC (12 Group A, four Group N and four Recce). - 1996 Porsche 911 (993) GT
In 1995 Porsche introduced the new 993. Although they were probably unaware at the time this was to be the last of the iconic air-cooled 911s. In competition, all-wheel-drive had been banned by most sanctioning bodies by the mid-1990s. This was as a result of Porsche's success with the four-wheel-drive 961, Audi's rally wins with the Quattro and the later track success of the Nissan Skyline. This presented a problem for Porsche, whose Turbo was fitted with four-wheel drive; the solution was simple and this was the GT2, which was built with rear-wheel drive only. A side benefit turned out to be significant weight savings, and the GT2 was instantly competitive. A factor of Porsche's intention to go racing was that they had to build a number of road-legal GT2s in order to homologate the model for racing. At about 430 horsepower the 3.6L twin-turbo flat-six ran higher boost than the standard Turbo model and developed almost as much horsepower as the racers and was mated to a manual six-speed gearbox. The GT2 shared the cutaway wings with the Carrera RS and had removable and replaceable bolt-on flares in order to fit wider wheels for racing and quickly fix crash damage. The Large rear wing provided additional down-force, with air intakes on the sides for the engine. With saving weight in mind the bonnet and doors were aluminium and the side and rear window glass was thinner. In addition, the three-piece, light-alloy Speedline wheels had Stahlgrau magnesium spiders. In fact, the body was lowered by 20mm compared to the 911 Turbo to reduce drag. As chronicled in the definitive GT2 book; Porsche completed just 194 road-going GT2s as well as a further 78 race cars. The original owner of this example was an avid fan of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. A regular attendee of the event, he would see the GT2 race car debut at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. Shortly after his return to the UK, he would find himself in the newsagents, copy of Autocar in hand; the front cover, a 993 GT in limited edition road trim. It was a must. Three visits to Porsche JCT600 later and his order was confirmed for one of just 16 UK C16 examples to be built. The 993 was optioned in Arctic Silver with Black/Grey leather bucket seats and with the sole optional extra of a graduated tint windscreen. After speaking to the original owner in December 2023, it was confirmed that he wanted the car without airbags, (and therefore featuring the more attractive three-spoke steering wheel of the GT1), without a radio, and with windup windows. This was certainly a car specified to be in a form faithful to the racing examples that the first owner witnessed competing at the fabled circuit that he so adored. Artic Silver replaced Polar Silver for the 1997 model year revised colour palette, with the latter colour being moved to the Paint to Sample list after 1996 production ended. Taking into consideration that production numbers were much lower in ‘97 & ’98, Just 20 examples would leave the factory in Arctic Silver and of those, just 4 were RHD. Sitting aside from specification choices, almost all cars were fitted with a 320km/h speedometer. Only three cars sit outside this, and this example sports the M020 double scale speedometer to both 320km/h and 200mph. Collection from the factory was mandatory for UK buyers. Porsche dealers at the time were happy to sell anyone their flagship GT product, but as the cars were not originally type-approved for the UK, collection had to be made in person by the buyer and the car would be registered later. Having placed the order 5 months earlier, but delaying collection into early 1997, a flight was booked and a long drive back to the UK ensued. Upon his return, the original owner was disappointed to learn that despite just having collected the car from the factory, it had been built to 1996 specification, rather than the EU specification MY1998 cars. The 1998 specification saw revised turbos and a new ECU with power rising from 430hp to 450hp. The factory responded immediately and a week after arrival in the UK, this example was upgraded to 450hp by Porsche JCT600 If the quest for more power seems a little trivial on a car that was so performant in its era, evidently it was not enough for the owner of this 993; as he would go on to purchase an upgraded Ferrari F40 and a road-going Porsche 962 Le Mans car! For the first three years, the car would remain in storage (as it was not able to be registered in UK). It was registered for the first time in 2000 and the owner would keep the car for a further 10 years until 2010. He parted ways with the car for £200,000 with just 8,600 miles from new; without a crystal ball doubling his money seemed like a good deal and the car moved to its second owner! The second keeper, Mr Kingham, kept the car for a further five years, covering just over 1,000 miles in this time. DK Engineering handled the sale to the third owner at that time, and once more to the current owner in 2019. GT2s very seldom come to market, but rarer still does one in the uber rare RHD format become available, and especially one as correct and superb as this car. Simply, this is not an opportunity to be missed. Today this example presents with just 11,450 miles from new and will receive a fresh service at Porsche Reading as part of the sale. - 1960-porsche-718-rs-60-spyder-by-wendler
Beginning with the Type 550 of 1953, Porsche’s competition spyders are nothing short of legendary—an iconic form of exceptionally sophisticated engineering with the racing pedigree and accolades to set the racing world on fire in the mid-20th century. From the 550 that introduced the Type 547 dual-overhead-cam flat-four engine (renamed the Carrera motor after dominating the Under 1,500-cc Class at the 1953 Carrera Panamericana road race) through the Type 718 RSK, Porsche showed the mettle of German engineering in the face of large-displacement Italian competitors. In January 1960 Porsche introduced the final evolution of its Carrera-based racing spyder, the RS 60. Despite being officially classified as a Type 718, the RS 60 improved upon its direct predecessor with a wider cockpit, independent wishbone rear suspension, uprated brakes, and 15-inch wheels. The car featured a wheelbase four inches longer than the 718 RSK which, combined with smaller wheels and an advanced suspension, resulted in more predictable and preferable handling dynamics. Power for the RS 60 continued to come from a variety of four-cam engines. Karosserie Wendler developed its prior spyder coachwork with cues like a framed windscreen and luggage platform (mandated by the FIA) and subtle modifications to the nose, doors, and head fairing. Completed on 8 June 1960 and sold new to the Milwaukee-based VW-Porsche dealer Bob Wuesthoff, 718-060 is among the best preserved and most notable surviving RS 60 from the six cars delivered to American privateers in period. It has enjoyed an illustrious period competition history, well-documented provenance, prior ownership by several notable marque collectors, an outstanding exhibition history, and uncommon originality. Per documentation acquired from Jürgen Barth (on file), 718-060 was originally finished in silver and equipped with Type 547/3 four-cam competition engine number P 90 254. Upon its arrival to Milwaukee, Wuesthoff painted a distinctive metallic blue accent on the nose and lower body, immediately distinguishing it from other silver “giant-killing” spyders. From 1960 through 1964, Wuesthoff campaigned the RS 60 in at least 20 races across the United States, amassing an impressive track record of approximately a dozen class wins, nine more podium finishes, and six additional top-five results. Remarkably, after four seasons of active competition, the car emerged in outstanding condition—thanks in large part to meticulous care from Glen Carroll, a respected Porsche specialist based in the Chicagoland area, and to Wuesthoff’s measured, instinctive driving style that kept the car out of serious trouble. In 1963, Carroll updated the car with Porsche’s distinctive and highly coveted annular-type disc brake; this prized RS 60 continues to use this system to the present. At the end of the 1964 season, Wuesthoff sold 718-060 to Bruce “King Carrera” Jennings, one of the most storied privateers in Porsche’s racing history. From there, the spyder passed through the hands of several devoted collectors, including a 30-year tenure with pioneering enthusiast Dr. William Jackson, whose stewardship helped preserve the car’s integrity and originality. In 1999, the RS 60 entered the collection of Peter Le Saffre and was entrusted to the Pebble Beach-winning crew at Paul Russell & Company for a well-researched sympathetic restoration, which included a complete engine rebuild by noted four-cam expert Bill Doyle (Jackson Hole, Wyoming). It was then acquired by William E. “Chip” Connor II, joining one of the world’s most respected collections. The year 2012 saw this prized RS 60 enter the stable of noted California-based collector Larry Bowman, where it remained for three years before passing to Claudio Scalise—who enjoyed it with great fervor in back-to-back editions of the famous Colorado Grand road rally. As with Connor before him, Scalise entrusted the mechanical upkeep of 718-060 exclusively to a reputable four-cam specialist; in this case, Speedsport’s Jeff Adams Tuning of Danbury, Connecticut. With Connor and subsequent owners, 718-060 has been carefully maintained and selectively shown at prestigious venues, including The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering and Porsche Race Car Classics. More recently, it returned to the track for high-profile historic events such as Rennsport Reunion IV, the Monterey Historic races, Colorado Grand, and also the Le Mans Classic—demonstrating not only its authenticity, but also its mechanical health. Today, 718-060 is offered as one of the finest and most authentic Porsche Spyders of its era. Retaining its original Wendler-built aluminum bodywork numbers-matching competition engine, and benefiting from a continuous chain of respected ownership, this RS 60 presents a rare opportunity to acquire a truly significant piece of Porsche’s competition legacy. 1960 Porsche 718 RS 60 Spyder by Wendler RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright Beginning with the Type 550 of 1953, Porsche’s competition spyders are nothing short of legendary—an iconic form of exceptionally sophisticated engineering with the racing pedigree and accolades to set the racing world on fire in the mid-20th century. - 1963 Maserati 3500GTI Vignale Spyder
The 1950s had proved very successful for Maserati in both sports car and Grand Prix racing and in 1957 the Italian sports car manufacturer announced an exciting new road car called the 3500GT. The rakish new car was styled by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan and featured their new hallmark 'Superleggera' body construction which consisted of lightweight aluminium body panels supported underneath by thin steel tubing that followed the general shape of the car. The engine was a road-going version of the competition 300/350S motor, a double overhead-camshaft straight-six unit with two spark plugs per cylinder, fuelled by a set of triple side-draft Weber carburettors with Lucas fuel-injection as an option later in the model's production. Presented at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show, the 3500GT was an instant hit and it wasn't long before Maserati realised there could be a great demand for an open top version. Carrozerria Frua had built a Spyder prototype on an early 3500GT chassis in 1957 and Carrozzeria Touring constructed two open-top versions, however it was Vignale who were sanctioned to produce the car for Maserati in 1959. Interestingly the Spyder didn't feature Touring's 'Superleggera' construction but was built with a steel body with an aluminium bonnet and boot lid. The wheelbase was shortened and front disc brakes and a limited-slip differential were options in 1959 and became standard equipment from 1960 onward with rear brake discs introduced as standard equipment in 1962. In all, 243 Vignale Spyders were built between 1959 and 1964 of which a mere eight cars were right-hand drive. This car was the second to last right-hand drive car built and one of the five that were imported to the UK when new. It was completed in August 1963 and benefits from all the later developments, as well as the optional Borrani wire wheels. In 1986 it was acquired by respected UK collector, the late Tom Walduck, and formed part of his extensive Collection, maintained but little used. In 2003, the current owner acquired the car from Walduck and immediately handed it over to McGrath Maserati for recommissioning. The brief to McGrath was to make the car safe, reliable and ready to use and after assessment, it was deemed necessary to replace the wiring loom, re-instate the Lucas fuel-injection and the suspension and brakes were gone through with whatever was required being carried out. After a general service, the car was returned by McGrath to their customer as being, ready for use, which it certainly was as our vendor enjoyed it, albeit occasionally, for the next ten years during which time it was maintained throughout ‘on the button’ by McGrath. In 2016, the decision was made to restore the car properly. The body and paintwork were entrusted to Prestige Restorations in Surrey and the mechanical and trim work was undertaken by McGrath. The original exterior colour was Amaranto Roma however, during the restoration, it was decided to refinish the car in the origanal Maserati hue of Blue Scuro, a rich dark blue that really suits the Spyder’s elegant lines. The original interior was listed as ‘neutral’ and it was completely retrimmed in a very similar colour and a new hood fitted. At the same time, the engine, gearbox and suspension were rebuilt and numerous detail improvements were made. Whilst the engine is the correct type for this vehicle, it is not the matching numbers original. The work totalled approximately £175,000 and since then, the car has not been used at all, although it has just been recommissioned once again by McGrath. - 1965 Alfa Romeo 2600 SZ
Chassis 29 of 105 built, Finished in Blue Over Black Interior, Unrestored Example With Original Tool Kit, Books, and Manuals, A Perfect Restoration Candidate or Driving Event Car. Alfa Romeo in the 1950s and 1960s is famous for producing sporty, small cars that were symbolic of the types of roads found around Italy after World War 2. Most were based around the Tipo 750 and Tipo 101 chassis and were powered by small displacement four-cylinder engines that were happy running at high revs all day and were built to handle tight winding roads with ease. But starting in 1958, Alfa Romeo also began offering a high-end flagship coupe and sedan-first known as the 2000 and then later, 2600. Powered by an all-alloy dual overhead cam Inline-6, these cars were predominantly built for grand touring and could produce up to 165 horsepower with exceptionally smooth power delivery. The 2600 series represents a unique point for Alfa Romeo as it was the final car to come from the brand with an Inline-6- an engine layout that they had found tremendous success racing with both before and immediately after the war. Although Bretone designed most of the 2600s, Alfa Romeo tapped legendary design house Zagato to build a limited run of coupes that would be the highest-performing variant in the range. Penned by Ercole Spada-the same stylist who came up with cars such as the DB4 GT Zagato and Alfa Romeo TZ-1- the 2600 Sport Zagato was based around a spyder chassis to keep the wheelbase as short as possible and the weight down. With a price that rivaled 12-cylinder Ferraris of the time, the inline 6-cylinder Alfa Romeo was a tough sell but for the discerning enthusiast, it was a unique and stunning alternative. In total, just 105 examples were built- including 5 prototypes- and according to the SZ register, less than 65 are known today. This 2600 Sport Zagato was built in December of 1965 and first sold in Novara, Italy in February of 1968. When the car came out of the factory it was finished in Grigio Chairo Metallizzato over a Black “Skai” leatherette interior. After its original ownership in Italy, the car was sold to an enthusiast based in Fort Wayne, Indiana where it stayed for a number of years before being sold to a collector in South Lyon, Michigan in 2012. The Sport Zagato remained in his care until July of 2018 when it was sold and exported back to Europe, ending up in Belgium where it has stayed with that owner until the present day. In the nearly 60 years since this car was produced, it has remained in largely original condition and has never been apart for restoration. At some point, the car was repainted from its original metallic gray to a striking shade of blue that suits the lines of the car very well. What is particularly unique about this example is that even after moving overseas and multiple ownership changes, the car still retains its original tool kit, spare parts catalog, original service book, and brochure for the car. These can be some of the most difficult things to find all these years later and the fact that they are included with this car makes it a very interesting restoration candidate. Mechanically, the car is in fine form- the DOHC inline-6 runs smoothly and judging by the overall condition under the hood, has been well taken care of for its whole life. This would be a perfect car to buy and take on your favorite driving event this summer before tucking into a restoration over the winter and coming out the other side with one of the best 2600 Sport Zagatos anywhere. With less than 65 examples known in the world today, this 2600 SZ will be a great conversation piece everywhere you take it and a welcome addition to any collection. Most limited-production cars with designs that come from the desk of Ercole Spada will set you back deep into the 7 figures but this car with its striking shape and refined Alfa Romeo underpinnings represents tremendous value for a coachbuilt 1960s Italian sports car. Finding such a well-kept 2600 SZ with a documented ownership history and all of the original bits is no easy task and with this car, whether you choose to go the route of a restoration or you would prefer to get in the car and just start driving, this Zagato is the right car for the job.
