THE 500 SUPERFAST Initially coined for a series of show cars and concepts, Ferrari’s “Superfast” nomenclature was finally applied to a production vehicle in 1964 with the introduction of the 500 Superfast. Conceived as a luxurious, exclusive grand touring saloon, the new model was for all intents and purposes the ultimate development of Ferrari’s flagship Superamerica model. While the Superfast coachwork was clearly developed from the outgoing 400 Superamerica Coupe Aerodinamico, the Tipo 578/65 chassis was derived from the 330 GT 2+2, ensuring the luxurious ride quality of a long wheelbase. These dimensions were maximized with the removal of any rear seating, providing a remarkably roomy and elegant interior. Luxury amenities included power windows and steering, sumptuous leather upholstery, and a teak-accented dashboard. The Superfast’s 4,963-cubic-centimeter Tipo 208 V-12 was an extremely unique engine for Ferrari, combining elements of the Lampredi-designed tall-block racing engine and the long-running Colombo-designed short-block motor. Capable of developing 400 horsepower, this engine was described by the noted marque historian Hans Tanner as “one of the most powerful Ferrari GT engines ever constructed.” Unveiled at the 1964 Geneva International Motor Show, the 500 Superfast was built in a limited quantity of just 36 examples through late 1966. As the flagship Ferrari grand touring model of its era, the 500 Superfast enjoyed ownership by jet-set luminaries such as the Aga Khan, Barbara Hutton, the Shah of Iran, and Peter Sellers. Claiming rarity, breathtaking aesthetics, and unprecedented road car performance thanks to its prodigious 400-horsepower 4.9-liter engine, the 500 Superfast was the ultimate expression of the Superamerica series. The highly collectable cars are now found at the center of some of the world’s most exclusive and respected stables…as they were when new. CHASSIS NUMBER 6033 SF The eighth 500 Superfast produced, chassis number 6033 SF was originally finished in Grigio Fumo over a Nero interior, to a rather sporting specification with three front fender air ducts, circular Carello turn signals, but no air conditioning, rear seats, or power assists for windows or steering—it was, more than most, a genuine all-out performance car. This apparently suited its original owner, Dr. Fritz Ries, who took delivery from prominent Düsseldorf, Germany Ferrari dealer Auto-Becker in January 1965. Dr. Ries was a man of taste; the 500 Superfast succeeded his previous 400 Superamerica. Auto-Becker apparently took the car back, via resale or trade, in the summer of 1968, and advertised it that August as a one-owner car with 6,400 kilometers traveled. In 1969 the car was imported to Florida, and eventually made its way in the early 1970s into the hands of Edward A. Weschler, Jr., of Nashotah, Wisconsin. It returned to Europe in 1989, but came back Stateside but a few years later. In 1996 the car passed into the hands of the present owner, a devoted longtime enthusiast and collector of Ferrari’s finest and most significant models. Substantial mechanical and cosmetic improvements were shortly undertaken by the noted Patrick Ottis & Company, with invoices and descriptions of the work included within the file. Ottis’s notes noted the presence of the original chassis and engine stamps, and recount the car as being “a good original example—not restored. Indicated low mileage is reflected in its condition. Chassis, shocks, suspension bushes etc. all original, black leather, red carpets seem original.” Further additional, documented servicing was completed by Ferrari of Central Florida in the early 2000s. The carburetors were rebuilt and a new generator installed by specialist Greg Jones in 2012, among additional mechanical sorting also documented in-file. Finally, in 2015, a meticulous restoration was undertaken in Jones’s hands, finishing the car in its very elegant original colors while preserving the original components wherever possible, with invoices and photographs in the file continuing to document the good care. In recent years it has continued to be upkept by the owners while making regular show appearances, most prominently in Southern concours d’elegance and Ferrari events. It is accompanied by tools, in addition to the aforementioned photos and files. This is, simply, an excellent example of the 500 Superfast, one of Ferrari’s most exclusive creations of an enthralling age. 1964 Ferrari 500 Superfast Series I by Pininfarina RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1970 Jaguar E-type Series 2 1
The days when people still smiled proudly without braces, and when you could still prank your teachers with a note from your parents. This was the time when legends were born, Keith Richards, Martin Luther King, and of course the Jaguar E-type cannot be left out of that list of greats. According to Enzo Ferrari, much to the dismay of other style icons, the most beautiful car ever made. A beast with exotic forms of British grandeur. The 4.2-litre six-in-line as the beating heart of the black feline sounds like no other. An aggressive growl and yet stylish. Ours is from the second series, which compared to the Series 1 mainly got a bit more comfort. In addition, the car was a bit more reliable due to larger radiator and two electric fans. This time, the headlights got locking lenses (saves condensation), the bumper matched the body better and the cooling and brakes also got a big upgrade.Ours is once again special. Just fully restored, and god how handsome she looks. Everything has been taken apart and no expense has been spared to restore English history to glory. The result is a gorgeous E-type 4.2 FHC series 2 in enchanting Pale Primrose Yellow. The paintwork is stunning and you can count your whiskers in the chrome work. Technically, she is ready for many rallies and long pleasure drives. Now all we need is a new owner who will look after it with the same precision. Do you fancy touring around particularly chic in the world’s greatest icons? The E-type, a creature of fire and spirit, whose every movement is pure poetry. – E-type 4.2 FHC Series 2 1970 Jaguar E-type Series 2 JamesEdition B.V. - 1974 Fiat 124 Abarth Gr.4
The Fiat 124 Abarth Rally was one of the first fruits of Fiat’s 1971 purchase of the legendary firm Abarth, a partnership which would serve the Fiat Group in the World Rally Championship to tremendous effect for many years. Almost as soon as the 124 Spider appeared in 1966, privateers began rallying it in mid-level national events. The acquisition of Abarth gave Fiat the resources to field their own factory team. As part of the deal, Carlo Abarth insisted that the engineering team remain unchanged, which proved to be a critical ingredient to the 124 Abarth Rally’s success. Experienced and talented engineers Ivo Colucci and Stefano Jacoponi collaborated to create the 124 Abarth Rally, which employed the typical go-fast methods to turn the pleasant and enjoyable 124 Spider into something rather spicier. The most significant change was the replacement of the live rear axle with independent rear suspension. The body was also meaningfully lightened with the removal of the bumpers and the fitment of aluminum doors and fiberglass deck lids and hard top. A roll bar was added, as were flared wheel arches to accommodate wider alloy wheels. The engine received twin 44mm Weber carburetors and an Abarth exhaust, while the 5-speed synchronized gearbox and all round disc brakes were retained. Inside the car, the rear seat, center console, and glovebox lid were deleted, a 3-spoke leather rimmed Abarth steering wheel added, and aluminum dash trim replaced the faux wood. The first official outing of the Works Team was on 15th October 1972 at the Rally Portugal with Alcide Paganelli and Ninni Russo, who drove their car to an impressive 5th overall. The initial performance encouraged Fiat to continue its Factory effort and on February 12th, 1973 another Works 124 obtained second place in the Costa Brava Rally with Pinto and Bernacchini. Subsequently, an encouraging 4th place followed in the San Marino Rally with Babasio and Macaluso. The first, important international win arrived on April 14th, 1973 in the Yugoslavia Rally thanks to the all-female team of Tominz and Mamolo. 1974 marked the debut of the iconic "lobster orange" and light green livery and additional integrated headlamps. The season started with a victory of Bisulli-Zanuccoli at the San Marino Rally. In addition to running the European Rally Championship, the 124 Abarth Rally also ran in the big times, the World Rally Championship. It placed second in the final standings every year that it ran (1973-1975), initially behind the Alpine A110 and then of course behind the legendary Lancia Stratos. Even in that exalted company, the 124 managed some impressive wins, including a 1-2-3 finish at the Monte Carlo Rally in 1974! Seeking to polish the image of another of their road-going cars, Fiat replaced the 124 with the 131 for the 1976 WRC season, creating another icon in the process. Chassis 0062626 began its life in 1973 as an Abarth Stradale finished in white (one of just 3 colors offered) and was then later converted to Gr.3 specification, participating in minor competitions. More recently, the car underwent a full Gr.4 preparation with the much desired Colotti gearbox, racing in the 2000 class in few historic rallies including “La Grande Corsa” and “Rally Costa Smeralda” in 2018 conducted by Rocchetto-Paganoni, wearing white paint with GULF light-blue/orange accents. The car is ready to race with FIA historic technical passport and has been exercised regularly. 1974 Fiat 124 Abarth Gr.4 ISSIMI, Inc If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1958-lotus-xi-ex-24h-le-mans
Lotus founder Colin Chapman assembled a team of volunteers to help him create a revolutionary model for 1956. While the production Lotus Marks 8, 9 and 10 were based on the Lotus Mark 6, the Eleven was designed from scratch. Its closest ancestor was the Mk 9 Le Mans factory racing car, registered XPE 6, a test bed for what was to follow. The Eleven used a steel tube chassis with aluminium panels. The elegant chassis weighed less than 30 kg. It was powered by the new Coventry-Climax four-cylinder aluminium engine, an overhead cam design with an impressive power-to-weight ratio. Girling disc brakes were used, and parts adapted from all kinds of English cars of the time made up the rest of the machine. The vehicle was covered with a stunning aerodynamic body designed by Frank Costin: handcrafted in aluminium and hinged at both ends for easy access. Lotus cars were considered ‘scientifically designed’ racing cars, with each component studied to achieve maximum efficiency for minimum weight. Chapman's philosophy was that each part should fulfil at least two functions, without weighing more than was absolutely necessary to do the job. Contemporary racing drivers considered the Lotus to be THE car to win races, even at the risk of not finishing at all. From January 1956, when the first Elevens were hastily assembled for their presentation to the press in AutoSport or to be shipped to the United States for their racing debut, the cars were built as quickly as the small Lotus workshop could manage. The chassis were manufactured by Progress Chassis Co. and the bodywork and panels by Williams & Pritchard, both of which were practically neighbours. The cars were either assembled in-house or sold as kits. The Elevens could be ordered in the full Le Mans version, which used a de Dion rear suspension, or in the less expensive Club version, which used an Austin rear axle and drum brakes. Finally, a Sports version was available, which was essentially a Club with a Ford 10 engine. Initially, all Elevens used a swing axle front suspension modified from parts of the British Ford 93E model. In the spring of 1957, after about 150 cars had been produced, a new version of the Eleven was introduced as the Series 2. The main difference, which was generally only found on the Le Mans version, was the Lotus 12-type double A-arm front suspension, which gave the car a smoother and more consistent ride. The S-2 had chassis improvements, a stronger powertrain and could accommodate larger engines. By the summer of 1958, a total of around 270 Elemens had been built when production turned to newer models, including Formula 1 cars. The Eleven was the first Lotus to be built in such large numbers, and it firmly established the company as a serious manufacturer of competition cars. It held such a place in Chapman's heart that future Lotus cars were given names reminiscent of it, such as Elite and Elan. Colin Chapman was in the habit of developing a prototype during the racing season for production the following year. The 1956 Mark XI followed this policy and had a new chassis that differed significantly from the previous year's production cars. It was available as an easy-to-assemble kit. Although the chassis frame was multi-tubular, the details were different, with the main lower tubes being one inch square instead of round. The others were 1.5 cm round tubes with a thickness varying between 18 and 20. There are fewer tubes, which reduces weight, but rigidity has been maintained thanks to a 20-gauge light alloy sheet metal floor tunnel. The swing axle system has been retained at the front, but the pivot points have been lowered, which should further improve the Lotus' exceptional cornering capabilities. The pivot bearings are located in a rigid steel section. This arrangement facilitates the assembly of the entire front suspension system, and the Ford axle beams have been ‘adjusted’ to allow the roll centre to be lowered. A new Girling-type suspension unit with integrated shock absorbers has been used. Morris Minor rack and pinion steering with a three-piece column was chosen, and the wire wheels are 15-inch Dunlops with centre nuts. Although a De Dion rear axle system has been retained, it is entirely new. The universal joints are located at the ends of the tube, which has a diameter of 3 inches, a quarter of an inch larger than the previous car. The De Dion tube is composed of three tubular arms, two of which are parallel at the front and rear, but the third forms a semicircle at the rear of the chassis. The available gear ratios are 4.89, 4.55, 4.22, 3.89 and 3.66 to 1. The inboard brakes at the rear and external brakes at the front are all Girling type with 9-inch diameter discs and the latest caliper mechanism. From an exterior perspective, the bodywork is once again very aerodynamic, but much lower than the S1. The aerodynamic purpose of the spoilers on the previous Lotus has been replaced by a central spoiler behind the driver's head, which is removable for mechanical work. The body is four inches wider and more rounded at the sides, making the cockpit spacious and easily accessible with light alloy doors on each side. Although it was usually powered only by a 1,100 cc Climax engine, the Eleven, in expert hands, could beat most other racing cars. The combined effect of good power, low weight, unrivalled aerodynamics, powerful brakes and exemplary handling was such that the Eleven had no rival in the 1,100 cc class and was almost as dominant in the 1,500 cc class. It was competitive in the up to 2-litre class, and on the right track, it could beat any sports car, regardless of engine size. After an aborted competitive debut at Sebring in March, the Elevens competed in races in England. Colin Chapman and others drove the cars to a string of victories and track records. For years, there was talk of an epic duel at Goodwood between the Elevens driven by Chapman and Mike Hawthorn. Around the world, the cars began to fill the grids of the 1,100cc sports car class (or G class), the predecessor of Formula Junior and an entry level for international competition. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a team of three cars was entered: the car driven by Reg Bicknell and Peter Jopp finished seventh overall and first in its class. That autumn, a specially faired Eleven, driven by Stirling Moss and ‘Mac’ Fraser, raced at Monza and set a series of world speed records on a closed circuit. The 1,100cc car covered 100 km at 135 mph, with a fast lap of 143 mph. During the 1956 season, the Elevens won at least 148 races. In 1957, with more than a hundred Elevens in action around the world, the domination continued. The highlights began with a class victory at Sebring by Chapman and Joe Sheppard. The highlight of 1958 was the Elevens' overwhelming victory in their class at Sebring. There, the Weiss/Tallaksen car finished an incredible fourth overall with only 1,100 cc. Gradually, however, the rapid evolution of racing caught up with the Eleven, and while it was still competitive, Lotus prepared a successor. In 1959, the Lotus 17 appeared, lower and lighter, but even it could not match the Eleven's handling and overall speed. The true replacement finally appeared in 1962 with the brilliant Lotus 23 as part of the rear-engine revolution that ended the era the Eleven had dominated. Around the world, dozens of Lotus Elevens found new life in amateur club racing and as ‘school’ cars. In the 1960s, many drivers got their first taste of racing behind the wheel of one of these old thoroughbreds. With 270 units built between 1956 and 1958, the Lotus Eleven was a synthesis of all Colin Chapman's experience and expertise at the time of its release. Designed for endurance and sprint racing for small cars, this new Lotus, which introduced the E names, quickly attracted a clientele of demanding sportsmen and gentleman drivers. Chassis 515 – 24 Hours of Le Mans 1958 In May 1958, Lotus Engineering completed the construction of chassis 515. The Lotus XI was then at the peak of its technical maturity. Chassis 515 was delivered new to Bill Frost, owner of the Car Exchange dealership in Brighton. The car was registered as 2411 HP. Its configuration was clear: Le Mans Series 2 specification, with a high windscreen and ‘High Tail’ rear, magnesium wheels and a Coventry Climax FWA No. 7701 engine combined with a close-ratio MGA gearbox. Everything indicated that its destination was already known. A few weeks later, the Lotus was entered in the 1958 24 Hours of Le Mans under number 39 by Car Exchange. The crew consisted of Bill Frost and Bob Hicks in the highly competitive 1100 cc class. The 1958 edition was marked by particularly challenging weather conditions. In heavy rain, the little Lotus demonstrated the intelligence of its design. Light, precise and balanced, it led its category in the early hours of the race. But the Sarthe remains unpredictable. On the Mulsanne Straight, the car lost control in precarious grip conditions. Immobilised, it was then hit by an Alfa Romeo. After three hours of racing, retirement was inevitable. The Historic Lotus Register archives formally confirm its identity: chassis 515, entered by Car Exchange, number 39, retired after three hours. Like many endurance cars of that era, the 515 did not disappear after this episode. It probably returned to Brighton where it was rebuilt. There are indications that it may have raced at Goodwood shortly before Le Mans during the 1958 Whitsun Meeting, a hypothesis consistent with Bill Frost's activity in Sussex, although this remains to be definitively documented. Over the years, the car left the United Kingdom and crossed the Atlantic. In the 1980s, it belonged to Harold Phillip Javetz in Savannah, Georgia. An amateur driver and passionate collector, Javetz kept the Lotus in its original configuration. In 1985, the car appeared in the American specialist press, notably in Thoroughbred & Classic Cars, where Innes Ireland was photographed alongside the XI – a highlight that helped to revive its Le Mans past. In 1988, the Lotus was sold to Ed Henning, also in the United States. In 1991, chassis 515 returned to the United Kingdom in the hands of Bill Harding. This marked a turning point: the Historic Lotus Register officially confirmed its chassis number, its original registration and its participation in the 1958 24 Hours of Le Mans under number 39. In the same year, the car was acquired by Carol Spagg. Inspected and documented by Graham Capel, it returned to British and European historic circuits during the 1990s. Correspondence from 1998 attests to its FIA compliance in 1098 cc configuration. In 2006, the XI 515 joined the collection of a French amateur driver. It took part in the 2008, 2014 and 2016 editions of Le Mans Classic, returning to the track where it had raced half a century earlier. In March 2022, the car was acquired by its current owner. Today, the 515 chassis retains the fundamental elements that define its identity: its Le Mans ‘High Tail’ configuration, its 1098 cc engine, its historical consistency and continuous traceability spanning more than six decades. The 515 chassis is not just a Lotus XI. It is a car that was ordered new for Le Mans, entered in one of the most difficult editions of the time, rebuilt, preserved, passed on from enthusiasts to collectors, and then returned to race on the circuit that shaped its legend. It was recently entered by its current owner at Le Mans Classic, Goodwood and the Gentlemen Challenge at Peter Auto. Perfectly maintained with a newly rebuilt and bench-tested engine, compliant with its Weber DCO3 carburettors, it perfectly embodies the Lotus spirit of the late 1950s: technical intelligence, mechanical elegance and courage on the track. ________________________________________ Summary of owners 1958 – Bill Frost / Car Exchange (Brighton) 1960s – Probable competition activity 1984 – Harold Javetz (USA) 1988 – Ed Henning (USA) 1991 – Bill Harding (UK) 1991 – Carol Spagg (UK) 2006 – Eric Leroy (France) 2022 – Current Owner It is eligible for the biggest motor racing events: Goodwood, Le Mans Classic, the Tour Auto, the Gentleman Challenge by Peter Auto, Motor Racing Legends and the GTSCC with Flavien and Vanessa Marçais... to name but a few! 1958 Lotus XI ex 24H Le Mans Historic Cars If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright Lotus founder Colin Chapman assembled a team of volunteers to help him create a revolutionary model for 1956. The Jaguar E-Type is a British automobile legend, manufactured by Jaguar between 1961 and 1975. A combination of good looks, high performance, and competitive pricing ensured the car was an instant legend. In period, a Ferrari cost three times more and supplied less horse power which established the marque as an icon of 1960s motoring. The model became a great success for Jaguar; at its release Enzo Ferrari called it "The most beautiful car ever made". The model was made in three distinct versions which are now generally referred to as "Series 1", "Series 2" and "Series 3". A transitional series between Series 1 and Series 2 is known, unofficially, as "Series 1½". Despite completion at the factory on the 15th December 1961, this Jaguar E-type 3.8-litre would not be despatched until 7th March 1962. One of the earliest examples completed, this is the 320th right-hand drive road ‘open, two-seater’. Originally finished in Imperial Maroon over Tan, this flat-floor was registered '494 YTB' which it retains to this day. From the accompanying Buff logbook and factory information sheet, the car was originally sent via Parker’s of Bolton to agents E. Rimmer of Chorley, Lancs, but lasted a mere 6 days on their forecourt before selling its first owner, R. Burgess of Prestbury, Cheshire. The logbook with the car notes that it remained for most of its early life in Cheshire, changing hands first in 1965, with several more sales until 1970. In August 1984, it was inspected by Strange, Strange and Lee Automobile Assessors of Stoke-on-Trent for a prospective client who was interested in purchasing the Jaguar. At that time, their report notes that the total mileage to date had been just over 14,000 and that this had been accounted for by a succession of fastidious owners. Whether the mileage was true or not is difficult to know, however, they do record that it was still in its original colour scheme, and MoT certificates on file confirm this reading. Five years later, in 1989 the car came into the ownership of Mill Lane Engineering, and was acquired as a sound basis on which to complete one of their exceptional restorations. It was purchased shortly after by a Jaguar enthusiast, who also had an XK150 restored by the company and was the subject of a ground up re-build at Mill Lane between 1989-1992. A comprehensive file with the car details the full process of the work carried out from its purchase in April 1989 for £19,500, through every aspect of the restoration work to its eventual completion. Each invoice throughout this period comes with the car and the total cost of the rebuild, carried out over 1,600 hours invested and at a time when labour charges were a fraction of today's figures, is a considerable £160,000. Well cared for by a serious of fastidious owners and residing within a small collection in the past few years, the car has seen sparing use. Offered for sale accompanied by its history folio including original log book and invoices, this example is ready to be used and enjoyed in the coming months. 1961 Jaguar E-type OTS 3.8 D.K. - 1968 Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV
Penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone, the 105’s clean and distinctive design is one of the most attractive small coupes of the 1960s and 70s. The 1750 GTV was the first evolution of the original design and benefited from Alfa Romeo’s larger 1779cc engine in addition to many other updates and modifications including to the chassis, suspension and brakes. It made for a much better driving car particularly at higher touring speeds and ensured the cars performance was better than many sports cars of the era. Arguably the ‘1750’ motor is regarded by enthusiasts as the one to have given its combination of power, torque and free revving nature. Externally the 1750 GTV also departed from the earlier cars with a new nose styling incorporating a revised grill with four headlamps. Our example is an early Series 1 model delivered in April 1968 to Pymble NSW, as confirmed by the Certificate of Origin which accompanies the car. It has been in the ownership of known ‘Alfisti’ who have kept it in wonderful order. The current owner acquired the car in 2006 and commenced a restoration in 2009. The car was then completed and registered in 2018 and has covered under 2,000 miles since that time. During the restoration the car underwent a back to metal repaint, extensive mechanical and electrical work. It still presents extremely well to this day. The body is in very good all-round condition with minimal panel work being required once the paint was removed. There are some stone chips and marks on the body due to age, but none are significant. The car had a colour change by its previous owner to red from its original Biancospino but it suits the car well. The interior is in the original Nero. All the stainless steel brightwork is in wonderful order and sets the car off beautifully. The wheels although from a later model 2000 GTV are refurbished and are in perfect condition. The interior is just lovely with everything as it should be. An unmarked steering wheel greets you and the dash and dials are something that just looks perfect to the eye. The dash has been restored at some point and the current dash pad is well made and is a practical addition. The desirable ‘flying buttress’ seats have been reupholstered and are just a lovely feature. The instrument binnacle looks spot on with only a little frosting to the rev counter cover, but this is being picky. The headlining is fresh and perfect to the eye. The timber veneer to the centre console is not original but a good match and is well fitted. The carpets are new and unmarked. Turn the key and the engine fires up to a familiar Alfa growl. Out on the open road this car is just superb. The gearbox is excellent with no issues with the synchro’s. It is accurate, smooth, and quick to work through the gears and using it is quite addictive. The engine is responsive and pulls extremely well benefiting from the carbs being rebuilt and tuned. The engine bay is clean and largely original. The boot is excellent and lined with carpet. These 105’s are great driver’s cars, and we can see why they are so sought after. Freshly restored cars are still fetching well north of $100,000 and this car represents good buying. The car will be serviced and ready to be enjoyed by its new owner. 1968 Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV Сlassic Сar Market If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer.
