The Italo-Anglo Ferrari Ferrari and Le Mans. Two names intrinsically woven into the very fabric of motorsport. A twisting tale studded with gladiatorial names and hallowed cars. The hybrid 499 P Hypercar may have recently twice returned the Prancing Horse to the top step of the podium at Le Mans, but the last 12-cylinder Ferrari to win at the Circuit de la Sarthe remains the Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrive. When the manufacturer-backed homologation specials of the late-1990s were outlawed from international endurance motorsport, the FIA GT Championship kindled a new top-flight category for production-based privately-entered cars. Little did the organisers know that the ensuing ‘GT1 era’, from 1999 to 2009, would one day be held as a truly golden one. An era in which the Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrive featured top, front and centre. Conceived by the Frenchman Frédéric Dor’s Care Racing Development outfit in 2000, the most successful racing version of the Ferrari 550 Maranello was designed, developed and constructed by the decorated British motorsport enterprise Prodrive to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the FIA GT Championship and the American Le Mans Series. No stone was left unturned by Prodrive on its quest to build the ultimate GT1 racer. A staggering 500kg was shed from the road car, the V12 engine was enlarged from 5.5-litres and 6-litres and the McLaren F1 designer Peter Stevens was drafted in to restyle the bodywork. “The most successful racing version of the Ferrari 550 Maranello was designed, developed and constructed by the decorated British motorsport enterprise Prodrive to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the FIA GT Championship and the American Le Mans Series.” Exquisitely engineered, dizzying quick and desperately beautiful, the Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrive was a monumental success. Between 2001 and 2008, they garnered 69 victories, 151 podiums and 60 pole positions. The GTS class victory in the 2003 24 Hours of Le Mans and the outright win in the 2004 Spa 24 Hours are the car’s crowning achievements. Chassis no. CRD03 Did you know that Prodrive homologated its GT racing version of the Ferrari 550 Maranello as a 550 GTO? We appreciate that comparing the car to the fabled 1960s Ferrari with which is shares its ‘Gran Turismo Omologato’ nomenclature sounds bizarre, but there are parallels to be drawn The car presented here, chassis number CRD03, is the third of only 10 Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrives commissioned by Care Racing Development to race in period. Acquired new from Ferrari by Frédéric Dor and used as his daily road car, it boasts a competition career spanning five years, testament to the raw pace and inherent reliability Prodrive’s designers and engineers were able to unlock from Ferrari’s then-flagship 12-cylinder model. Of the 34 events CRD03 entered across the world between 2002 and 2006, it won five races, took 14 podium finishes and scored 10 pole positions. More importantly, with five consecutive editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on its competition résumé, this car has the distinction of being the single most-raced 12-cylinder Ferrari in the world’s most famous endurance motor race. The year 2002 marked the first of this Ferrari’s record five 24 Hours of Le Mans outings This Ferrari made its competitive debut in the 2002 24 Hours of Le Mans under the Prodrive banner. Alain Menu, Rickard Rydell and Tomáš Enge were earmarked to drive, the latter putting in an extraordinary lap of 3.54.09 to secure pole position in the GTS category. After Le Mans, CRD03 was sent across the pond to compete in three rounds of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). America’s top-flight endurance racing championship generated a great deal of media and commercial interest at the time, attracting strong manufacturer support in both the prototype and GT classes. Racing on American soil for the first time and against the might of the Works Chevrolet Corvettes, Dodge Vipers and Saleen S7s, this Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrive converted pole position into a stunning GTS class victory in the Monterey Sports Car Championships round at Laguna Seca. That was followed by a podium on the streets of downtown Miami and a further pole position at the prestigious Petit Le Mans, held at Road Atlanta in October. The short string of very encouraging results gave Prodrive the confidence to mount an all-out assault on the ALMS the following year. For Le Mans in 2003, chassis number CRD03 was finished in a striking blue livery depicting the French Alps For the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2003, Prodrive engaged the French engineering outfit Solution F to run chassis number CRD03 for the French World Cup alpine skier turned racing driver Luc Alphand. Alphand was joined on driving duties by Jérôme Policand and the brainchild of the Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrive project himself Frédéric Dor. For the race itself, this Ferrari was given a striking blue livery depicting an alpine mountain range – a nod to Alphand’s sporting past. The trio of pilots drove a mature and, crucially, consistent race, completing 298 laps to finish fifth in the LM GTS category. The remaining eight rounds of the 2003 American Le Mans Series beckoned next for chassis number CRD03. Refinished in the minimalistic red livery of the Prodrive team, the car was raced by a plethora of racing greats from several different disciplines of motorsport. They included the sports-car veteran and multiple Le Mans winner David Brabham, the most successful female driver in American open-wheel racing history Danica Patrick, the Danish motorsport Jack-of-all-trades Jan Magnussen and World Endurance Champion Anthony Davidson. David Brabham and a very young Jan Magnusson drove CRD03 to second in the 2003 American Le Mans Series, scoring victories at Laguna Seca and in Miami The 2003 ALMS endeavour was a fruitful one for Prodrive and especially this 550 Maranello. CRD03 scored GTS a trio of class victories at Road America, Laguna Seca and Miami. It also accrued three further podiums and set two fastest laps. This car’s contribution was instrumental in Prodrive finishing second in the GTS Teams Championship. A class victory in the non-championship Le Mans 1000 Kilometres was a crowning end to what was a stellar year. This Ferrari’s third outing at Le Mans (and its only competitive start in 2004) is its most important for a number of reasons, not least its high-profile guest driver. Prodrive regulars established drivers Darren Turner and Rickard Rydell were joined by a certain Colin McRae – the only time the Scottish World Rally Champion swapped the special stages for Les Hunaudières in his storied career. Prodrive was the buzz of the paddock at Le Mans in 2004 thanks to Colin McRae, the late World Rally Champion making his first and only 24-hour outing McRae’s appearance at Le Mans was a real draw for the British contingent of the 200,000-strong crowd at La Sarthe, which had swelled in size as a result of his being there. Their frenzied anticipation was duly rewarded: the ironman of rallying rose to the immense demands of 24-hour racing with admiral deft. And despite gearbox gremlins which plagued the number 65 Ferrari throughout the race, McRae, Turner and Rydell finished third in the LM GTS class and ninth overall. They even left with the fastest race lap. For 2005, the running of CRD03 was entrusted to Rob Schirle’s Cirtek Motorsport outfit. It competed under the banners of Russian Age Racing and Team Convers in 16 races between the FIA GT Championship and the Le Mans Endurance Series (LMES), scoring a further five podiums. The strong results equated to third overall in the LMES standings. At its fourth consecutive 24 Hours of Le Mans, Christophe Bouchut, Alexei Vasilyev and Nicolai Fomenko brought this Ferrari home in a commendable fifth in class. CRD05’s 33rd and final competitive outing came in the 2006 24 Hours of Le Mans. Cirtek Motorsport/Russian Age Racing ran chassis CRD03 at its fourth and fifth 24 Hours of Le Mans races in 2004 and 2005 As with all but two of the Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrives built, following its retirement from active competition in 2006, chassis number CRD03 returned to Care Racing Development. It remained there for a decade, until Frédéric Dor was persuaded by our very own Max Girardo to part with the car in 2016. “I first met Frédéric Dor when I was working for Bonhams in Geneva,” Max recalls. “He called me and asked if I could sell a Mercedes-Benz 300SL ‘Gullwing’. I knew that he had a collection of Prodrive-built rally cars he hadn’t sold, as well as the legendary Ferrari 550 Maranello GT1 racers. That was 20 years ago, but we remained good friends and kept in touch. One day, he called me to ask what we could do with all the 550s he had kept. For him, selling them was like parting with one of his babies. “I kept on badgering him and asking whether he’d sell me one. Finally, after many years, he agreed. Because of my interest in rallying, I always knew I wanted chassis 03, the car Colin McRae had raced at Le Mans in 2004. It would probably have been easier to prise another car from Frédéric’s grip, but I really wanted that actual car. It was great because Frédéric appreciated how passionate we were about the cars and knew that we’d show and run the car as much as possible. And that’s exactly what we’ve done. His greatest fear was that the cars would just sit, hidden away.” The wealth of scrutineering stickers on chassis CRD03’s rear bulkhead tells a visual story of the car’s storied period competition history In the years since, it’s remained with the same enthusiastic owners – owners who have championed the car by exhibiting it at the world-famous Goodwood Festival of Speed and campaigning it in the burgeoning Endurance Racing Legends series, including returning the car to La Sarthe for the Le Mans Classic on two occasions. In 2022, this car received its all-important Ferrari Classiche certification, the Ferrari factory recognising the historical significance of the 550 Maranello Prodrive. Indeed, this car is eligible for Ferrari’s exclusive Club Competizione GT events, held as part of its revered Corse Clienti programme. CRD03 has also been prominently featured in Cavallino magazine and the our definitive book Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrive – The Last V12 Ferrari to Win at Le Mans, chronicling the story of these Italo-Anglo Prancing Horses. Returned to its 2004 Le Mans specification and livery, this car is accompanied by its original Ferrari factory books, ACO and FIA technical documents, Prodrive Legends report and an extensive spares package including the very GT1-specification engine used for the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 2004. Accompanying chassis number CRD03 is its original 2004 24 Hours of Le Mans race engine and its red-book Ferrari Classiche certification binder And in the fabled story of Ferrari at Le Mans, certain cars are elevated by their record. As the final 12-cylinder Ferrari to win, the 550 Maranello Prodrive stands proudly among those Prancing Horses which carved such a strong legacy at La Sarthe: the 166 MM, 250 GT SWB Berlinetta, 250 GTO, 250 LM and 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ Competizione. With five starts, chassis CRD03 further distinguishes itself as the 12-cylinder Ferrari to have raced at Le Mans more than any other. Its extraordinary competition record, including its successful venture in the American Le Mans Series, its podium finish at Le Mans in 2004 and its Colin McRae connection, is the proverbial cherry on the cake. “This car is accompanied by an extensive spares package including the very GT1-specification engine used for the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 2004.” In light of the recent sale of the Le Mans-winning chassis CRD06, the final Ferrari 550 Maranello Prodrive to leave the Care Racing Development stable, it is clear that the interest in these special GT racers is continuing to grow as serious Ferrari and competition-car collectors become more educated to their historical importance. • 1996-ferrari-f512-m

This 1996 Ferrari F512 M is one of the final examples produced, built in January 1996 and delivered to its first and only owner in June of the same year. Sold via Swiss Ferrari dealer Garage Foitek AG in Zurich, the car has been exclusively serviced there since new, with stamps in the owner’s manual to prove it. Showing just 28.953 km at the time of cataloging, it remains in exceptional condition to this day. Finished in Rosso Corsa, the F512 M is easily distinguished from its other Testarossa brethren by a few significant design changes. The largest difference is the front end - where both the Testarossa and 512TR featured pop-up headlights, the M has exposed units with projector headlights, which are paired with a revised front bumper and front lid with dual-NACA ducts. At the rear, we see Ferrari’s return to the dual-round tail lights in place of the large single rectangular units on the previous Testarossas. And of course, it wouldn’t be an F512 M without the unique twisted 5-spoke multi-piece wheels from Speedline which are wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero tires. The interior of this F512 M is wrapped in tan leather, with a black leather dash-topper. For anybody who is familiar with the interior of a 512 TR, it remains largely unchanged for the F512 M. The bucket seats are nicely bolstered, but still comfortable for long-distance touring - the Testarossa lineage’s specialty- and the orange-on-black gauges give the car a classic feel. The only real alterations from a 512 TR is the steering wheel, a chromed gear knob and drilled aluminum pedals. Powering the F152 M is the final iteration of the Tipo F113 “Flat-12” which displaces 4.9-liters. Power is up slightly over the 512 TR from 422 to 434 horsepower and torque is up from 362 to 370 lb-ft. But what makes the F512 M feel more race-car like is the use of titanium connecting rods and a new crankshaft which reduces the engine’s rotating mass by 16 lbs which makes for a very lively engine. Power is then sent through a 5-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels. All of these upgrades were paired with the improved rear subframe of the 512TR and the numerous suspension tweaks which made the handling far better than that of the original Testarossa. The F512 M represents the end of an era for Ferrari. When the brand returned to the front-engine V12 cars it built its name on with the 550 Maranello, it left the flat-12 layout behind, with the “M” standing is the final variant in a long and successful lineage. This example has been meticulously kept from new under original ownership, and benefits from a recent major service to ensure it is ready to be driven and enjoyed by its new owner. 1996 Ferrari F512 M ISSIMI, Inc If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright This 1996 Ferrari F512 M is one of the final examples produced, built in January 1996 and delivered to its first and only owner in June of the same year. • 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL

Having been in production for only just over a year, the Mercedes 250SL is the rarest variant of the timeless W113 ‘Pagoda’, and this particular example is beautifully presented following a recent restoration. After being in German ownership during the 1970s, it had been exported to Hawaii by 1988 and the history file even includes some road maps from the island. The 250SL remained there into the 1990s before passing to a new owner in California, and from there it was exported to the UK in 2005. In recent years, it has been treated to a meticulous rebuild using specialists including D-Class, SLS in Germany and The SL Shop. The work is documented in the car’s extensive history file and included a full glass-out respray in Signal Red, plus a rebuild of the 2.5-litre straight-six engine. That process included a reground crankshaft with new bearings. The block was cleaned, while the cylinder head was skimmed before being rebuilt with new valves, springs, guides and seats. The camshaft lobes were polished, the oil pump and fuel-injection system were reconditioned, a new timing chain was fitted, and a new clutch and flywheel were installed. The interior was retrimmed, with black Mercedes grained leather being specified throughout, along with ‘salt and pepper’ carpets. A new mohair hood was also fitted, plus a new wood kit for the dashboard and surrounds, and Mercedes-branded seat belts were specified. The finishing touch inside was a new Becker Europa Vintage RM radio with correct 1967 Mercedes knobs and a Hirschman electric wing aerial. The exhaust system and headlights were replaced, and Michelin whitewall tyres fitted. In total, more than £36,000 was spent on retrimming, new parts and subsequent servicing. The end result of that time and investment is a Mercedes 250SL that is now being offered for sale in exceptional condition following its restoration, and which must be one of the very best examples on the market. 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL The Classic Motor Hub If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1990 Alfa Romeo Spider

Introduced in 1990, the Alfa Romeo Spider 2.0i (4th generation) continues the legacy of the iconic Spider roadster. It is a charming and agile sports car that combines timeless design elements, clean lines and open-air driving pleasure. The 1990 versions are less prone to corrosion and the power steering, which became standard, as well as the electric windows provide comfort that can be appreciated by all. Please welcome this beautiful exemplar of the Alfa Romeo Spider 4th generation, painted in metallic silver grey with a beige interior. Of Italian origin, the roadster was registered for the first time in Belgium in 2003 with only 38,000 km on the odometer. It was purchased by its last owner in February 2019 and registered as an ancestor, being used very occasionally. The black soft top, which is known to be easy and quick to handle, is here complemented by an optional hard-top in assorted grey that allows the Spider to be used in winter. The charismatic 2.0L inline-four engine produces 126 hp and offers sufficient performance for a cruising convertible. Thanks to its low mileage, this Alfa Romeo Spider is in very good condition. It comes with its original service book. A major maintenance has just been carried out on the vehicle. The upholstery and carpeting were replaced in 2024… In order words, the Spider has found a new lease of life and is ready to hit the road again. So, if you are one of the many enthusiasts who appreciate its timeless look, give us a call and come to see it in real. Among the rarest models BMW has ever built, and the first to be created entirely under the purview of its elite M division, the M1 is a hand-built homologation special developed in the late 1970s as the German automaker sought to compete at higher levels of motorsports. Intent on using a mid-engine layout, BMW initially contracted Lamborghini to develop the M1 chassis, and its tubular steel spaceframe is said to have been devised with input from noted Italian engineer Giampaolo Dallara. Lamborghini’s ensuing financial struggles delayed development and dissolved the partnership, but a group of disenfranchised engineers from the Italian automaker banded together and founded their own company to complete the work. The final product was impressive, featuring a rigid spaceframe and sophisticated, double-wishbone suspension with adjustable coil springs and Bilstein gas-filled dampers. Angular fiberglass bodywork by noted designer Giorgetto Giugiaro gave the M1 visual appeal commensurate with its performance potential. Initially completed by Karosserie Baur on 28 May 1980, this stunning Red-over-black M1 is presented today in stunningly preserved condition from over 45 years within the care of its original owner. According to the BMW M1 Register, M1 chassis 239 is the 173rd street car produced in the series, one of 71 cars finished in Red, and the first of only four M1 examples sold to Mexico. An accompanying German registration document shows that the consignor initially purchased the car from BMW in Munich on 23 July 1980. The manufacturer subsequently registered this car with the export plate “Z686-6571” and it was later dispatched to the consignor’s Mexico home via BMW Mexico-Bavaria Motors S.A. Since new, the consignor has added fewer than 7,000 kilometers (~4,350 miles) to this M1, and as such the car retains an astounding degree of well-preserved original finishes throughout. Despite the low mileage and careful use, the M1 and other cars in his stable were always maintained and regularly run to ensure they were in healthy mechanical condition. The car is accompanied by the original 1980 German registration document which notes its purchase by the consignor. It seems fair to say that this M1 is one of exceptionally few examples of this rare homologation special which remain in the ownership of their original buyers. Now 45 years onward from the model’s debut and still with exceptionally low mileage, this offering could possibly be an unrepeatable opportunity for the collector hunting a preserved, reference-grade M1. The ambitions of the production BMW M1 was not to be a refined GT but simply the most efficient sports car of its time. Soberness and functionalism have always been notable keywords within BMW, and the stunning M1 was no exception to the rule. It is, without a doubt, the ultimate driving machine. 1980 BMW M1 RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1961 Lotus Elite R

Records show that only two Lotus Elites were given the ‘R’ designation by the factory and sold as race cars from new. This is one of them – chassis number EB 1852 – and it was acquired as an unassembled kit by Derek Alderson in October 1961. A note in the history file suggests that it was supplied with the engine from the Lotus 11 that had been raced by works driver Alan Stacey. Alderson planned to run a two-car team in 1962 along with his friend Derek Bennett, a talented engineer who would later become the founder of Chevron. Bennett also bought an Elite and together they embarked on a busy season of British racing. Bennett’s ingenuity came in useful at one race when they discovered that the brake master cylinder on Alderson’s Elite was leaking. With no replacement to hand, Bennett wedged a lever-action oil can into the inside of the driver’s door. ‘He then commandeered the piping from the windscreen washers,’ wrote David Gordon in his history of Chevron, ‘jammed it over the oil can spout, and ran it to the master cylinder. Now all Alderson had to do to get round the corners was to remember to pump the oil can in the door with his thumb while he was going down the straights!’ In September 1962, they had a memorable outing at Aintree, as noted in Autosport: ‘The last race of the day was for Grand Touring cars and it was easily the best of all. A grand scrap went on between the Elites of DC Alderson, who led for four laps, BJ Smallthwaite, who took over and won by 0.4 of a second, and AD Bennett, who was always third. These three were out by themselves, finishing some 45 secs ahead of the field.’ The following week, they were at Oulton Park and again warranted a mention in Autosport: ‘From the flag it was the Elites of Derek Alderson, Brian Smallthwaite and Derek Bennett in that order, but a spin on lap two at Lodge relegated Smallthwaite to eighth position and, try as he did, he could do no better than third, some 6 secs down on Bennett, with Alderson a winner by 2 secs.’ At some point during the season, Bennett apparently borrowed Alderson’s Elite for a race at Brands Hatch and promptly crashed it. Story has it that Alderson, who couldn’t attend, only found out when he saw a photo of his damaged Lotus in the newspaper! It’s thought that Alderson raced the Elite into 1963 – and that Bennett took it to second place at Oulton Park on 6 April – before selling it that year to Andrew Ball. Between 1963 and 1967, it was registered for road use with the number 2309 VR, and in 1966 it passed to racer and dealer Brian Classick. Subsequent owners included Barry Sewell, Alan Brownlee and Michael Gue before the Elite was bought in 1976 by Gunter Turk. He later recalled that, by then, it was ‘a racer in international Appendix J trim’ and he took it to the Nurburgring to compete in the Oldtimer Grand Prix. Turk sold the Lotus in 1979 to Lindsay Owen-Jones, who later became the CEO and Chairman of cosmetics company L’Oréal. Owen-Jones was a fine driver who would go on race a McLaren F1 GTR in international events, and he retained the Elite until it passed to Michael Lavers in the late 1980s. More recent custodians of ‘1852’ have included Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler, who raced it at the Goodwood Revival, and David Conrad, who treated it to an engine rebuild, an $18,000 respray and a number of competition outings in the USA. In 2015, the Elite was bought by a British-based enthusiast. He raced it in the UK and at Spa over the next few years, and recent expenditure includes FIA-spec suspension and exhaust system from Tolman Engineering, a straight-cut, close-ratio gearbox from David Whitehurst Racing – plus the acquisition of a race-ready and FIA-compliant Coventry Climax FWE engine. Having been raced throughout its life, this Lotus Elite is offered for sale with an extensive history file, and is ready for its next owner to continue the journey that was started by Derek Alderson in 1961. MODEL HISTORY The Lotus Elite made its debut at the 1957 Earls Court Motor Show and immediately drew crowds thanks to its innovative construction. Working with a team that included Peter Kirwan-Taylor, Frank Costin, John Frayling and Ron Hickman, company founder Colin Chapman had come up with a remarkable design that was based around a glassfibre monocoque. The Elite was light, aerodynamic and rigid, but turning it into a production reality would be an expensive business. The first 250 monocoques were produced by Maximar in Sussex before the contract was switched to the Bristol Aircraft Company, and Chapman later stated that he lost about £100 on every Elite that he sold. Production lasted until 1963, by which time just over 1000 had been made. Predictably, however, it made a superb competition car. Powered by the 1216cc Coventry Climax FWE engine, it featured disc brakes all round and independent suspension via wishbones at the front and Chapman struts at the rear. An MG gearbox was standard fitment but there was also the option of a close-ratio ZF unit. Les Leston and Graham Warner often did battle in famous Elites that used the registration numbers DAD10 and LOV1 respectively, while Peter Lumsden took his car to class victory in the 1959 Le Mans 24 Hours. That was the first of a remarkable six consecutive class wins at La Sarthe for the Elite. Perhaps most significantly, it was while racing an early Elite belonging to Ian Scott-Watson that a young Scottish racer called Jim Clark really caught the attention of Colin Chapman. The two men enjoyed a fierce dice at the 1958 Boxing Day meeting at Brands Hatch and would go on to form one of motor racing’s most successful partnerships. 1961 Lotus Elite R The Classic Motor Hub If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1957 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce

The Alfa, in a few words then, is a small car with a rev-happy DOHC engine that can carry two people from point A to point B over all types of roads quicker than most cars twice its size. It does this not with blinding speed but with a wonderful combination of roadholding, compact size and sheer willingness.' – Car & Driver on the Giulietta Sprint. With the introduction of the Bertone-styled Giulietta Sprint Coupé, Alfa Romeo established the 'small car, big performance' formula that would characterise the Milanese marque's finest offerings from then on. First of the Giuliettas, the Sprint debuted at the Turin Motor Show in April 1954 powered by a 1.3-litre, all-alloy version of Alfa's classic twin-cam four designed by one-time Ferrari engineer Giuseppe Busso. The Sprint Coupé was soon joined by Berlina and Spider versions, the latter styled by Pinin Farina and built on a slightly shorter wheelbase. Right from the start, the Giulietta Sprint Coupé was appreciated by drivers who recognised its potential for competition success. With its independent front suspension, very well-located live rear axle, and coil springs/hydraulic dampers all round, the unitary-construction Giulietta's chassis was superior to that of most sports cars. Only the handicaps of relatively low power and excess weight (64bhp/880kg) held it back, prompting Alfa Romeo to introduce a more powerful version: the Giulietta Sprint Veloce. For the Veloce engine, the inlet ports were enlarged and the single Solex carburettor replaced with two twin-choke Weber 40 DCO3 instruments, effectively providing each cylinder with its own carburettor. In addition, the valves were enlarged, the compression ratio increased (from 8:1 to 9:1), the camshafts changed, a more free-flowing exhaust system fitted, and the engine balanced, the result being an increase in maximum power for 64 to 89bhp at slightly higher revs. In actual fact, most engines exceeded this figure, with the best having around 99bhp on tap – 89 horsepower being in effect the minimum guaranteed. The inlet manifold and oil sump were made of magnesium. At the same time, the Giulietta Veloce's weight was significantly reduced. Bertone used thinner steel for the non-load-bearing body panels; insulation was removed; the doors, bonnet and boot lid made of aluminium; and the side and rear window made of Plexiglas. Aluminium was also used for items such as the bumpers, 'eyebrows', 'whiskers', and headlight rims. The side windows' heavy winding mechanisms were deleted and replaced with sliding windows with aluminium frames. The doors weighed only 7kg (with foam padded armrests) and could be ordered with nets for containing small items. There was no glove department cover, no sun visors, and no rear seat. The Veloce seats were thinner, albeit foam-padded, and mounted on a delicate tubular frame. As a result, the 770kg Veloce enjoyed a 110kg (15%) weight advantage over the standard Sprint Coupé, and that with a 65-litre fuel tank instead of the normal 53-litre tank (an 80-litre tank was available for endurance racing). With this greatly improved power-to-weight ratio, the Veloce would turn out to be a formidable competitor. The Giulietta Sprint Veloce debuted at the Turin Motor Show in April 1956, this being the first occasion that the 'Veloce' (fast) designation was used by Alfa Romeo. Advertised by its maker under the tag line 'Only the best is good enough', the Veloce competed two days later in the Coppa della Consume, securing a class win. There was more success the following week at the 23rd Mille Miglia; on this occasion the Giulietta Veloce's superiority proved overwhelming, examples filling the first six places in the 1,300cc class with a best overall position of 11th. Further class victories were achieved in the Nürburgring 1,000km, Coppa Dolimiti and Tour de France, with the Alpine Rally won outright. The following year, of the 43 cars entered in the Mille Miglia's 1,300cc category, 43 were Alfa Romeo Giuliettas. These early Giulietta Sprint Veloces, with Bertone body numbers commencing '77', are now commonly known as 'alleggerita' (lightened or lightweight) cars. They differ considerably from the 'normal' Sprint and were built in limited numbers. Chassis number AR1493 E 04229 originally corresponds to an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce Alleggerita, manufactured on the 12th April 1957 and sold on the 14th May 1957 in Lucca, to Sig. Benito D'Ulivo of Milano who retained the car until 1974 when it was passed to its second owner in Milano a Sig. Alessandro Frova. Remaining in original condition Sig. Frova kept his Alleggerita until May 1983 when it was sold to a German gentleman. Herr. Dammler of Osnabrück, who kept the car until 2003 when it was purchased by one of the proprietors of the German classic car parts specialist OKP who commissioned Dutch Alfa Romeo Specialist Jan Steutel to carry out a full restoration and rebuild to historic racing FIA appendix K specification. This restoration commenced in 2003 and was completed in 2006. In 2010 OKP entered into a collaboration agreement with Facetti Motori the legendary family engineering firm established by racing driver and ex Autodelta engineer Carlo Facetti. As a result of this collaboration, in 2011 the original engine was rebuilt and prepared by Facetti to achieve 130bhp an increase of 40bhp on the ’standard’ Veloce motor. Mated to this is a four-speed gearbox with a longer first gear and shortened second, third and forth built by Oliver Vetter of H & O Vetter Garage in Switzerland and a fully overhauled 8:41 differential which has been used in just one race. In addition to this #04229 has an 80 litre aluminium Veloce fuel tank, racing clutch and external oil cooler. The result is a quick, period competition vehicle. Currently fitted with Alleggerita interior trim with a single race seat fitted and roll cage, it is track ready. Alternatively, we also have a correct pair of seat frames that could be fitted to return the interior to original specification. Externally the car has all the correct Alleggerita aluminium body panels - bonnet, doors and boot lid as well as trim in place - bumpers, window furniture, grill eyebrows and headlight rings. Presented in a very appealing condition throughout, this matching-numbers Giulietta Sprint Veloce represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire one of the very rare, early lightweight models possessing known history. It is, of course, eligible for participation in many of the most prestigious historic motor sports events including the Mille Miglia. 1957 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce Will Stone Historic Cars Ltd If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB

“Owning one should be the goal of every automotive enthusiast everywhere.” That’s how the famous American magazine Car & Driver summarised its in-depth review of the Ferrari 400 Superamerica back in 1963. Strong words indeed, but then this was no ordinary Prancing Horse. The 400 Superamerica followed the tried-and-tested Gran Turismo recipe – one which, as the austerity of the War faded, was becoming more and more sought-after. Ferrari’s flagship model, it employed the legendary Colombo V12 in large four-litre form, a short- or long-wheelbase chassis, overdrive, disc brakes at all four corners (a first for a Ferrari road car) and a bespoke coupé or cabriolet body styled in a manner of different ways by Pininfarina. “Owning one should be the goal of every automotive enthusiast everywhere.” That’s how the famous American magazine Car & Driver summarised the Ferrari 400 Superamerica Coach-built. We can’t emphasise enough how painstakingly built to the original owners’ exacting specifications these cars were. And said owners weren’t your average Ferrari customers – they were VIPs, loyal brand disciples, pop stars, captains of industry and even royals. Il Commendatore himself drove a 400 Superamerica. Need we say anymore? Ferrari 400 Superamerica production was split into two series. The first, produced from 1959–1962, comprised a mere 15 short-wheelbase (2,400mm) cars, which were bestowed with a stunning Aerodinamico closed-coupé body by Pininfarina. It’s a dramatic design befitting of the world’s greatest motor show stands, with swooping curves, tapered overhangs, lashings of chrome and eleven exquisitely aligned vents in each of the front wings. Chassis number 3559 SA Even in the rarefied realms of the Ferrari 400 Superamerica, there are certain combinations of specification which, today, significantly increase the desirability. The car we’re honoured to be offering – chassis number 3559 SA – is one such example. Crucially, this is one of only eight Ferrari 400 Superamericas Series Is ordered with covered headlamps – an option which, in our opinion, enhances the overall aesthetic harmony of the Aerodinamico coachwork. The exhaustive build process began at the dawn of 1962 and this Ferrari was not signed off until July, by which point chassis number 3559 SA was resplendent in Blu Sera Italver over a Blu Connolly interior. The car was delivered new to Luigi Chinetti’s Ferrari concessionaire on the East Coast of America. Chinetti in turn found this 400 Superamerica its first home with one C. O. Marshall Jr. in Ohio. Clearly fond of his flagship Ferrari, Marshall Jr. retained chassis 3559 SA for a decade, covering over 20,000 miles and even exhibiting it at the fifth Annual Ferrari Club of America meeting in 1968, where it won the Judges’ Choice award. The car remained in the United States under the stewardship of one further owner until 1989, at which point it was exported to Switzerland and acquired by Arnold and Walter Meier on the shores of Lake Zurich. The Meiers were true disciples of the Prancing Horse, religiously maintaining the 400 Superamerica and, with a view to preserving the factory authenticity, commissioning a comprehensive restoration in 1993 with Edi Wyss Engineering in Switzerland. The restoration complete, the Meiers transported the car back across the Atlantic, this time to the West Coast, and entered some of America’s greatest events, including the International Concours d’Elegance in Monterey and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where chassis 3559 SA contested the ‘Ferrari Grand Touring Coupés up to 1968’ class in 1994. “Of more importance was the Ferrari Classiche certification, which confirms this Superamerica’s matching-numbers chassis, engine, gearbox and differential.“ Two years later, in 1997, Werner Meier drove this 400 Superamerica to the Ferrari 50th-anniversary celebration in Rome/Modena – a pilgrimage which, quite rightly, earned him and his beloved car a photo in that year’s Ferrari Yearbook. The Meiers only parted with chassis 3559 SA in April of 2003, selling to a collector in Florida who exhibited the car at the XIV Cavallino Classic Concours in 2005. In 2011, the legendary American racing driver and racing school founder Skip Barber acquired this historically-significant Ferrari. His goal with the car was to win a revered Platinum Award at the world-famous Cavallino Classic in Florida and, with that in mind, he sent it to the Ferrari specialist Greg Jones to put it in the best possible stead. The extensive work paid off, Barber clinching the Platinum Award at The Breakers in 2012. Of more importance was the Ferrari Classiche certification, which chassis 3559 SA subsequently received, confirming its matching-numbers chassis, engine, gearbox and differential. This Ferrari 400 Superamerica was acquired by its current owner in 2013 and has since been carefully stored and seldomly driven. Today, the car is accompanied by its Ferrari Classiche certification binder. In the period, these ultra-rare and highly exclusive flagship twelve-cylinder Ferrari Gran Turismos were the preserve of those who Enzo Ferrari personally held in the highest esteem – and were built to an accordingly high quality. Perhaps unsurprisingly, their stature in the market has remained lofty to this day, bolstered by their rarity, bespoke no-two-alike nature and, of course, exceptional beauty. Chassis number 3559 SA distinguishes itself further with its unbroken chain of owners, each of whom fastidiously maintained it and exhibited it at prestigious events across the world, and its fully matching-numbers provenance. Whether you’re looking to reintroduce this 400 Superamerica Aerodinamico into the international concours circuit (to which it would be welcomed with open arms) or simply after a jaw-droppingly beautiful and astonishingly capable Gran Turismo for cross-continental jaunts, this is a Ferrari for the most discerning of collectors. In fact, 400 Superamericas reside in the world’s most prominent Ferrari collections. Here is an exceedingly rare chance to join them. 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB Girardo & Co.
