This is the Alfa Romeo SZ – a brutal mix of design, performance and history. Also known as Il Mostro, this car is a symbol of Alfa Romeo’s uncompromising vision of the late 1980s. Think cassette tapes, fluorescent sports jackets and the glory days of analogue passion. What makes this car unique? Everything. The SZ has a design you wouldn’t expect to see on a production car. Its sharp lines and angular shapes look more like a prototype than something you’d put on a license plate. Yet this futuristic creature was built in Italy, with a body made of advanced thermoplastic composites – revolutionary at the time – mounted on the chassis of the Alfa 75 Group A racer. Under the bonnet is the heart of the legendary 3.0-litre Busso V6 engine. The sound? A mechanical aria that gives any car enthusiast goosebumps. Thanks to the five-speed manual gearbox, every drive feels like a hot lap of Monza. This specific example of the Alfa Romeo SZ, with production number 771, was originally delivered new in Japan. In 2012, the car ended up in the United Kingdom, where it came into the hands of a Dutch owner. When he later moved back to the Netherlands, the SZ naturally came with him. Since 2023, the car has officially been registered on Dutch license plates. Since its time in the United Kingdom, the SZ has been in the hands of a dedicated Alfa Romeo specialist. She has been well maintained over the years and has remained in excellent technical condition. Yes, she carries a few charming Italian wrinkles here and there, but that is part of the character. As icing on the cake, this SZ comes with a birth certificate, confirming her origins and originality in black and white. Are you as obsessed with Alfa as we are? We would love to get in touch with you as an Alfa enthusiast!
