In order to qualify, 1,000 “Homologation” models had to be built. Featuring a lightweight aluminum hood and deck lid, and an aluminum engine air-cleaner housing, the SLC's front and rear spoilers kept the car stable at its 142-mph top speed. Most importantly, Mercedes-Benz included its new engine – the 5.0-liter, aluminum-block V-8 – realizing a weight savings of over 200 pounds.
