The famous BMW roundel has led the field in many disciplines of motorsport, and the Munich marque’s motivation to build the M1 was born out of its competitive endeavours. By the end of the 1970s, its CSL cars were losing an edge against Porsche’s new 935; BMW needed a mid-engined chassis to fit its twin-cam 3.5-litre six-cylinder engine. BMW’s Motorsport division first contacted Lamborghini for help needed but, by April 1978, the project had been taken in house. The wedge design was styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro and built in Italy along with the chassis, prior to final assembly taking place at Karosserie Baur in Stuttgart. The resulting product—badged as the BMW M1 and sold from 1978 to 1981—is widely coveted to this day as a rare piece of BMW history. The example offered here completed initial construction by Italdesign on 7 September 1979, with the factory in Turin overseeing production of the car’s chassis, body moulding, initial assembly, paint application, and interior installation. The M1 was then transported for final assembly at Baur’s facility in Stuttgart, where the German plant turned the rolling shell into a finished car with the installation of the drivetrain and mechanical hardware. It was marked complete by Baur on 8 October; the BMW M1 Register states that this was the 55th M1 made. Delivered new to one Erhard Teuber, its first owner in Verden (Aller), Lower Saxony, the car was finished in Blue over a Black interior. Today, the BMW is still finished in this factory-correct colour combination. The M1 has stayed with German owners from new and its most recent owner, based in Munich, had retained the BMW from November 2011 until last year. With them, the M1 was maintained with servicing conducted by BMW Group Classic and Wagner Motorsport, with invoices available to view on file. The car is now offered at auction with 45,135 kilometres showing on its odometer. Beautifully styled by Giugiaro and underpinned by a spaceframe chassis designed by Giampaolo Dallara, the M1 is a major player in BMW Motorsport and wider automotive history. This example awaits its next adoring custodian.
