General History Considered to be one of the best Bertone-designed sport coupes, the tidy greenhouse, low but roomy profile, and clean body lines made the 105 series Alfa Romeo coupe one of the most successful cars in the Alfa Romeo lineup. Built from 1963 -1975, the charming front-engine, rear drive sport coupe offered seating for four adults and spirited performance. Although the design shared many mechanical features with the Giulietta, the new unibody/monocoque platform was very innovative and lightweight. Live rear axle, disc brakes all around, dual overhead cam, and 5-speed gearbox, all resulted in a very effective driving combination not only for road use but as a formidable racer. In 1965 the Sprint GT “Veloce” model was offered with a range of improvements which included the 1600cc engine, twin carburetors, bigger oil pan, spirited camshafts, and different intake and exhaust, all of which greatly improved performance. Exterior changes included stainless steel bumpers, Veloce script on the trunk, Alfa clover leaf emblems on the C-posts, and other traits. Loved for their agile handling and high revving engine, these cars rapidly won hearts and races when new and continue to do so as part of the modern vintage racing scene. Current History and Race Prep Though the early history of this car is not documented, it is believed to have been a solid original example when it was converted to race duty under prior Northern California ownership including two prominent vintage racers. The accompanying SCCA logbook included with this car indicates races beginning in 1993 including VARA race events at Sears Point, HMSA Wine Country Classic, Laguna Seca, Thunder Hill, Pre-Historics, followed by races in Portland, BC, and Pacific Northwest Historics through 2009. The next race entries were logged under current ownership backed by detailed notes chronicling race prep, track support, and invoiced services. This desirable Stepnose Alfa Romeo GTV was purchased by the current owner in 2021 and immediately set up for mechanical upgrades performed by Intrepid Motorcar, Sparks, NV. Services, race prep, and trackside support include a fresh engine, new MSD ignition, fresh gearbox, differential service, new seat belts all new disc brakes with rebuilt calipers, new fire suppression system (AFFF), refreshed radiator, new exhaust, and new wheel bearings. In February 2022 the car was prepped for March Laguna Seca races including installing a new Fuel Safe fuel cell inside the factory tank, and new tires, followed by a comprehensive nut and bolt after the March races. Services continued in October 2022 with race prep for Laguna Seca including checking valve lash, fluids, diff and trans fluids, and brake bleeding followed by April 2023 prep for Sears Point SVRA where new brake pads were installed, fluids flushed, and nut and bolt completed. Work proceeded on the car with regular fluid services and race prep through 2023 and 2024. In May 2025, with 31.5 hours logged on the engine meter, the engine and transmission were removed, engine rebuilt, carbs rebuilt, fluids flushed including brakes, and a new battery installed. Numerous service invoices from Intrepid Motorcar include rear axle rebuild and gearbox work, welded sliders, crossmember repair, new aluminum radiator, and front-end body repairs (2023). Engine rebuild performed in 2024 included a new piston liner set, new gaskets, new mains, rod bearings, forged race pistons, block bore, cylinder hone, main, piston skirt, and rod bearing coating, piston test and out for coating, balancing for total rotating assembly, new clutch disc, valve job, valve lash, carburetor rebuild, a new Powersafe battery, new Hoosier tires, and all fluids flushed and replaced. In 2025, after the engine work was completed and the car was tested, the engine was removed again, disassembled and reworked, adjusted and tested again with new timing set and other details refined. This final engine work, adjustments, and testing concluded in September 2025 resulting in nominal test hours completed on the freshly built engine. An engine hours counter, displaying 31.6 hours, is mounted to the dash. The engine was removed at 31.5 hours, rebuilt, and run with test hours only. Current Condition and Overview Today this ‘stepnose’ presents as an impressive vintage racer with a fresh engine, handsome cosmetics, and desirable race components assembled by capable professionals. Exterior preparation is at a high level, well beyond what is typically seen on vintage race cars. The finish is smooth and glossy overall with none of the front fascia speckling often seen on track cars. Emblems and script lettering are also very nice including the minimal trim, much of which has been removed to lighten the car. Glass and window garnish are in very good condition including excellent windshield and rear window rubber. The car wears a set of GTA style cast alloy Alfaholics wheels which are beautifully refinished in satin silver with Alfa Romeo branded center caps, wearing recently installed Hoosier racing tires backed by front and rear ATE disc brakes. The body panel fit is excellent and the opening features function properly. The distinctive central Alfa Romeo grill is in excellent condition, flanked by single headlamps and turn indicators with the front fascia finished in gloss black and trimmed in Italian flag tricolore. The removed bumpers, hunkered down stance, and side exit exhaust complete the ideal racing appearance for this well-prepped Alfa. The interior has been prepared for racing duty including a Sparco Evo2 racing seat with a Simpson racing harness (valid through Dec 2026) mounted to the rear cross brace on the roll bar. A Momo steering wheel fronts the stock instrument panel while an array of Stewart Warner secondary gauges (oil pressure, oil temperature, water temperature, and fuel gauge) is mounted to the dashboard and angled towards the driver for better view from the driving position. A full roll cage has been installed with diagonal door-side bracing, and the rear seating has been removed and finished with custom panels matching the remaining interior. The front passenger seat and door panels are consistent with original type cloth and vinyl materials, and the 5-speed shifter, carpeting, headliner, and original Alfa Romeo branded door thresholds have been effectively combined with the racing features maintaining the original character of the street GTV without the often sterile feel of a gutted race car. The engine compartment and professionally prepared racing engine have been properly prepared and updated for race duty. The engine has been rated at 160 hp and features a correctly finished black alloy cam cover, the battery has been relocated to the trunk, tubular header exhaust is mounted, and twin side draft Weber 45 DCOE 152 dual-throat carburetors with polished open trumpets. Fuel is delivered via a modern Holley Red Electric fuel pump, and an aluminum radiator manages cooling duty. An Oval Track Pro TelTac digital tachometer (for rev recording lap sequences) is mounted to the inner fender, a remote oil breather is installed, along with a modern reliable ignition and modern coil. Inside the trunk the steel trunk floor houses a lightweight Hawker battery, a Fire Sense fire suppression system bottle is mounted in the vacant tire tub, and the stock type fuel tank houses an internal 10-gallon capacity fuel cell. The underside is in very good condition with no evidence of structural compromise, no immediately visible signs of structural corrosion, and sound suspension mounting points. Suspension, rear axle straps, stock Alfa differential with welded spiders, side exit exhaust, split-case transmission, Koni shock absorbers, and various other components are in excellent condition. A regular participant at the Rolex Reunion and Velocity Invitational and backed by a cost-no-object approach to racing, invoices over the past four years of ownership total well over $100k in recent engine preparation and additional mechanical services resulting in a properly prepared vintage race car that can confidently run at the front of the pack at prestigious venues around the globe. Included with this car This California titled and registered Alfa Romeo is accompanied by a second set of four Alfaholics GTA wheels with new Hoosier tires, various spare parts including a clutch kit, spare clutches, spark plugs, spare filters, MSD ignition controller, carburetor trumpet screens, spare carbon metallic brake pads, an Alfa Romeo workshop manual, an oil cooler, spare water hoses, spare belts, and service records retained under current ownership.
