  • 1965 Shelby Cobra 427

40th Anniversary 427 S/C Cobra Limited production, 18 of 40 Aluminum body 427 C.I. Aluminum engine, 550 HP Powerful, lightweight, and an American icon, the Shelby 427 Cobra was the brainchild of sports car builder Carroll Shelby. While the original CSX3000 series of 427 Cobras ended production in 1967, the insatiable appetite for Cobras from the public around the world did not. During this time, many companies tried to make similar examples using Shelby's tried-and-true formula of lightweight cars with massively powerful engines but were never true Shelby Cobras. Then in 1996, almost three decades after the last original 427 Cobra rolled off the production line, the new CSX4000 series was born. Now offered by Shelby American, Inc., no Cobra kit manufacturer could offer what the American company now produced: True Shelby authenticity. CSX4000 series cars were offered in both fiberglass and aluminum-bodied forms, with the aluminum examples being rare, almost doubling the purchase price of the car due to their labor-intensive hand-formed panels. These Shelby Cobras were delivered to authorized dealers as rolling chassis for the final fitment of the engine and transmission, allowing the new owner to choose a power plant and transmission of their choice. Since 1962, when Carroll Shelby built the first Cobra, many companies have tried to make a copy of this iconic sports car. Most are offered in kit form, and the customer is left to assemble or build the car themselves. Beginning in the late 1990s, Carroll himself decided that he would produce a continuation Cobra, featuring a hand-crafted aluminum body, 4-inch round tube chassis, and many of the same mechanical components as the original 427 Cobras had. In 2002, Carroll Shelby authorized a run of 40 CSX 4000 Cobras to be produced with special features to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first Cobra. This car is 18 of only 40 anniversary Cobras produced. Exterior features include special "Anniversary Blue" paint, street bumpers with overrides sun visors, wind wings, chrome roll bar, ceramic coated side pipes, and a cooling splitter in the grille opening. Interior features include leather seats and dash, 40th-anniversary commemorative gauges and floor mats, door pockets, glove box (signed by Carroll Shelby), heater/defroster, ashtray, lighter, and shoulder belts. The drivetrain consists of an all-aluminum 427 big block engine mated to a big shaft Top Loader 4-speed transmission. The independent rear differential features an aluminum center section housing 3.54:1 gears. Included with the car is the original M.S.O. signed by Carroll Shelby, build photos, and receipts. The Shelby CSX cars are the only Cobras to be licensed by Shelby American and are documented and included in the Shelby American Automobile Club World Registry. This 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 has been meticulously cared for and recently underwent significant maintenance and upgrades. In August 2022, the fuel system received a thorough overhaul, with the fuel cell inspected and fuel cell foam replaced by Fuel Safe, a carburetor rebuild, and the installation of a new fuel pressure gauge and filter. Upon arriving at Canepa, the cobra was inspected from front to back and given a checklist of what items needed to be addressed. The car was given a full mechanical inspection and servicing as needed, then sent to our detailing department where it was given a full detailing. The blue paint finish was polished using only foam pads to bring a deep luster to the surface. The interior was thoroughly cleaned, leaving it spotless and in excellent condition. This Cobra is not just a collector's dream; it's a remarkable driving experience with a blend of classic charm and modern reliability. Don't miss the opportunity to own this iconic American muscle car. The wait for a new CSX Cobra is over two years. • 1991 Porsche 962 C

Few cars define their era in the same way as the legendary Porsche 956 and 962 sports-prototypes. They formed the mainstay of top-level sports car racing throughout the 1980s, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans six years in a row and dominating the World Endurance Championship between 1982 and 1986. The 956 was introduced first, in 1982, and found immediate success in Group C racing, but it wasn’t eligible for the high-profile North American IMSA series because it failed to comply with the safety regulations. Porsche therefore developed the 962—in effect, a 956 with an extended wheelbase in order to place the driver’s feet behind the front-axle line. The 962 made its debut at the 24 Hours of Daytona in February 1984 in the hands of Italian-American hero Mario Andretti and his son Michael. It would go on to win the IMSA GTP Championship three years in a row from 1985 and, following an extensive programme of aerodynamic development, was adapted for Group C racing as the 962 C. While the Porsche factory team scored numerous wins with its own cars, it was backed up by a select group of highly professional privateer teams. Among the most successful of those was Brun Motorsport, which had been founded in 1983 by Swiss racer Walter Brun and soon established itself as a front-runner with both the 956 and 962. In 1986, victories in the World Endurance Championship rounds at Jerez and Spa-Francorchamps helped Brun Motorsport to secure the Teams’ title ahead of the works Jaguar and Porsche squads. Such was the inherent quality of the 962 that it remained competitive well into the 1990s, and chassis number 962-177 was supplied to Brun Motorsport as a bare tub in 1991. The Swiss team then built it up into a complete car in time for it to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 22-23 June. Driven by Walter Brun himself, along with team stalwarts Jésus Pareja and Oscar Larrauri, chassis 962-177 set the sixth-fastest time during practice for the French endurance classic. With that year’s regulations having reserved the top-10 grid positions for the latest 3.5-litre, normally aspirated generation of cars, the car was forced to start the race from 14th, but it made it to the finish in 10th place overall. By the time it raced again, in the Nürburgring 430km on 18 August, it had been resprayed from its original Repsol colours into the livery of logistics company FAT International. Pareja and Brun took it to 7th place in Germany, then finished an unclassified 12th at Magny-Cours on 15 September. The final outing for chassis 962-177 came on 6 October at the Mexico 430km, where the car was once again finished in Repsol colours; Pareja and Massimo Sigala finished 8th. Three years later, in 1994, it was fully restored by another great name among Porsche privateers—Joest Racing—and returned to its evocative FAT International livery. The extensive work is fully documented and included a complete rebuild of its Typ 935/86, twin-turbocharged, 3.2-litre flat-six engine and gearbox. With all four of its period competition outings being at World Championship level in the hands of Brun Motorsport, chassis 962-177 boasts an impeccable race record. It also holds a special place in marque history as being the very last Porsche-built 962 monocoque—the end of an illustrious and incredibly successful line. A mechanical recommissioning will be performed by LARBRE Competition, at seller’s charge, following the sale. • 1965-porsche-915

This 1965 Porsche 911 is a very interesting example that has been modified for race use over the years. The car is currently finished in black over a red base - although the original color was Dolphin Gray- with red paint showing through on the interior and under the hood and rear decklid. The paint shows significant patina around the car, including some peeled paint in areas and the remnants of old racing numbers ghosted on the front bonnet. In Europe, there is a robust racing series for these early 911s, and this car is a prime candidate for that. This example was set up by the head of PCA’s racing division, so it drives spectacularly and is currently set up for street use. Although this car has been extensively modified for track use, it has been lovingly cared for over the years and retains nearly all of the original records back to new, as well as the 1965 record books. Sitting on a set of chrome Fuchs 5-spoke wheels, it comes with two pairs of spare wheels, including the original steel wheels that have been powder-coated silver. The interior is largely stripped out but does retain some of the classic early 911 hallmarks. The carpet has been entirely removed and the floor is simply red painted metal, but the door cards and rear quarter panels remain in the original arrangement. The Sparco race seats that were in the car have been replaced by the original-style low-back bucket seats which are great for street use and make the car simple to get in and out of. Porsche fans will note the original wood dashboard has been retained as have the 5-gauge cluster with the classic green text on a black background. When you get into the driver’s seat, you are met with a 3-spoke MOMO steering wheel with an Alcantara rim, and the peddles have been replaced with drilled aluminum racing pedals that offer great grip when driving. Sitting in the rear of the car is a 2.0-liter flat-6 that was thoroughly serviced by Porsche specialist Jerry Woods. The engine breathes through a pair of triple-choke PMO carburetors and an MSD ignition is fitted for better spark control. This engine is not the original unit to the car but instead a correct replacement from a 1966 911. When you open the front bonnet, you notice an ATL competition fuel cell that was FIA-certified in 1999. As the car weighs less than 1,900 lbs, the 2.0-liter engine makes it feel remarkably quick, and the properly set up suspension allows you to carry tremendous speed through corners. These early Porsche 911s are special cars with the short wheelbase only in production until 1969. As the value of early cars continues to rise, the prospect of buying one to turn into a race car is largely unrealistic, which makes buying an already converted example particularly appealing for vintage competition use. Regardless of whether or not you plan to take this car to the track or use it as a fast road car on the weekends, nothing compares to the nimble chassis, revvy small-displacement flat-6, and a sub-1900 lb curb weight from behind the wheel. 1965 Porsche 911 ISSIMI, Inc If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1963 Maserati Sebring

This matching-numbers Maserati Sebring was built at the Modena factory on 13 September 1963 and first registered on 23 October, and it has still had only four owners from new. Its original custodian was René Borgerhoff Mulder, who was based in Wassenaar – a small town just north of The Hague in The Netherlands. Borgerhoff Mulder was a wartime pilot who was reputedly a friend of Prince Bernhard, and competed in the Tulip Rally and Monte Carlo Rally on a number of occasions. He would regularly act as co-driver on such events for Hans Maasland, whose family owned the Maserati dealership in Voorburg from where Borgerhoff Mulder bought this Sebring. The documents from Maserati Classiche state that chassis number 01937 was originally finished in Blue Sera with red interior and had the five-speed ZF manual gearbox. It was also specified with the sought-after air-conditioning and Borrani wire wheels. Borgerhoff Mulder kept the Maserati until 1987, when it was sold to a Mr Stradmeier, who was a dentist and also based in Wassenaar. During his ownership, the car was restored by the Maasland dealership – a process that included a bare-metal respray and engine rebuild – and when he passed away it was inherited by his children. It changed hands again in 2011 but still didn’t move far, its next owner being based in Leiden, only a few kilometres up the road from Wassenaar. In 2016, the Sebring was sold to a UK-based enthusiast who had previously owned a number of Maseratis as well as a Ferrari 330 GTC. During his time with the car, it has been maintained regardless of cost by renowned specialist McGrath Maserati. Invoices totalling more than £40,000 from this period include a top-end rebuild of the engine. More recent expenditure includes an overhaul of the fuel system and air-conditioning, plus a new clutch and starter motor. The six-cylinder engine has been converted to run on triple Weber carburettors but the original Lucas fuel-injection system comes with the car should a future owner wish to have it refitted. Presented in its original colour combination, this Maserati Sebring has been fastidiously maintained and is offered for sale at The Classic Motor Hub with a Maserati Classiche Certificate and a copy of the original delivery note, plus a wealth of invoices and receipts. As one of only 348 Series 1 cars, it is a rare and distinctive choice of Italian Grand Tourer. MODEL HISTORY Maserati had achieved great motorsport success during the 1950s, but had built production road cars in only very small numbers until the 1957 introduction of the 3500GT. This stylish new model drew on Maserati’s racing experience but would be produced in far greater quantities than previous road cars. Originally launched as a 2+2 coupé, the 3500GT featured bodywork by Touring that was mounted on a tubular chassis. Beneath the bonnet was a 3485cc straight-six that was closely related to the marque’s competition engines and featured twin overhead camshafts, twin-plug ignition and a trio of twin-choke Webers. Upgrades applied during the model’s production run included a five-speed gearbox in place of the previous four-speeder and all-round disc brakes, while the 3500GTI gained a Lucas fuel-injection system that would also be used on the Sebring. First seen in prototype form at the 1962 Geneva Motor Show, the Sebring was based on the short-wheelbase chassis of the 3500 Vignale Spyder. Suspension was independent at the front via wishbones and coil springs, with a live axle and semi-elliptic leaf springs at the rear. Steering was by recirculating ball, and options included a Borg-Warner automatic gearbox, air-conditioning and a limited-slip differential. At more than £5000 in 1963, the expensive and exclusive Sebring occupied a rarefied spot at the top end of the 1960s GT market, with its few rivals including the Ferrari 330 GT and Aston Martin DB5. Autocar recorded a top speed of almost 140mph when it tested a Sebring and said: ‘Undoubtedly the jewel in this car is its splendid engine, which is virtually beyond criticism.’ A facelifted Series II Sebring was introduced in 1965, when the engine was enlarged to 3.7 litres. A 4-litre variant producing just over 250bhp was also offered, but sales began to fall away after the announcement of the V8-powered Ghibli and production ended in 1968. 1963 Maserati Sebring The Classic Motor Hub If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1987 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 2

The original Ford Sierra RS Cosworth was the first Ford to wear the Cosworth badge and was presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1985. It was introduced as a means of homologating the Sierra for 'Group A' Touring Car racing, with a requirement that 5,000 cars were built and sold. Launched for sale in July 1986, and based on the three-door Sierra body-shell, it was designed by Ford's Special Vehicle Engineering (SVE) and was powered by a Cosworth-designed 2.0-litre turbo engine of now-legendary repute. At this time, the Sierra Cosworth was a new kind of performance car - a 'blue-collar hero' able to humble true sports cars! In total 5,545 cars were produced - of which 500 were sent to Aston Martin Tickford for conversion to the Sierra 'RS500 Cosworth'. If the RS Cosworth was a homologation car, the RS500 was an evolution special. Once Ford had built the requisite 5,000 RS Cosworths, 'Group A' rules allowed an upgraded 'evolution' model to be launched. This could carry changes focused on improving its racing potential, provided Ford sold 10% of the original number as road cars, hence the 500. The RS500 was announced in July 1987 and had a mechanically uprated Cosworth engine (more similar to the one to be used in competition), with power boosted to 224bhp, modified bodywork and the cachet of being hand-assembled - the RS500 really is the ultimate 1980s Fast Ford! Around 14 years ago, our vendor, a knowledgeable and particularly fastidious enthusiast, decided that he would like to add an RS500 to his Collection. He knew what he wanted but took the precaution of enlisting the help of a friend who was a marque expert. They considered a number of cars, including some lovely examples, but were focused on finding the best RS500 they possibly could. A number of other contenders were rejected until, one day, E378 TKN appeared and was unquestionably 'the one'. Its originality was unmatched, the mileage was nominal (even today it has only covered 5,192 miles) and it had patently been cared for. Although very lightly used during our vendor's tenure, it was regularly serviced and maintained during this period by Tremona Garage of Southampton, a local specialist widely recognised as being hugely knowledgeable when it comes to Fords from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. They are also known for preparing cars to a Concours standard with much success in the Autoglym Masterclass and others. Who better to entrust with an RS 500 that may well turn out to be the best and most original RS500 to come to market. The attention to the detail of this car's maintenance cannot be understated. Our client has impressively managed to source a supply of rare new/old stock oil filters, fuel filters etc. so, not for this car a modern oil filter of the correct type, but an original orange one that would have been supplied when new. This 'forensic' attention to originality can be illustrated by our vendor's purchase of a set of period RS 500 wheels and tyres in order that TKN's date-stamped originals can be carefully stored and not have to bear the weight of the car for prolonged periods. This diligent approach is typical of our vendor and will explain why this gleaming black RS500 may well be the best you have ever seen. In 2022, Tremona carried out a full re-commissioning service on E378 TKN including the replacement of engine oil and filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, cambelt and a new battery. All parts used are genuine new/old stock parts and are identical to parts fitted at the factory. The engine oil filter is a Fram PH2854, spark plugs are Motorcraft AGPR 901C and a black Weber fuel filter was fitted. All these parts have not been available for many years and have been sourced to maintain the car's originality. As mentioned, the original Dunlop D40s are on the stored wheels, the original Ford exhaust system is still in place, the factory fog lamps remain in the boot awaiting fitting by the dealers and there is a file full of history detailing the car's life. Recently refreshed and with a fresh MOT, E378 TKN will be presented at Race Retro on its original wheels. Silverstone Auctions are proud to have been involved in the sale of many cars at World Record prices, many of them Fords. With 'Fast Fords' seemingly knowing no bounds in their desirability, and this one believed to be the very best example of the ultimate 1980s Fast Ford, we invite and encourage any serious collector to inspect this superb, 5,000-mile Cosworth as its type is unlikely to be found again. 1987 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 Iconic Auctioneers Ltd If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. Copyright holders who believe their rights under copyright law have been infringed are invited to follow our notice and takedown procedure as required by DMCA regulations. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright The original Ford Sierra RS Cosworth was the first Ford to wear the Cosworth badge and was presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1985. • 1973 Lancia Fulvia Zagato

This Italian sporting bellezza is stravagante. The Lancia Fulvia Zagato is a sporty bellezza of the 1960s and 1970s. The Zagato version of the Fulvia was a fantastic collaboration between Lancia and the famous design house Zagato. Most likely, Zagato took inspiration during the summer months as this beauty is known for its curves, with a flowing roofline that flows effortlessly into the rear end. The body is made of lightweight materials combined with a spirited characteristic engine. Similar to a Penne all’Arrabbiata pasta where grandmother has shot out with the chilli flakes, Mamma Mia! Under the skin, a completely revamped 1.4-litre four-cylinder. This little powerhouse delivers serious performance and the engine sound is music to any car enthusiast’s ears. Perfect for winding (rally) drives through the countryside, along the coast or just around town. The Fulvia Zagato is certainly not the roomiest car, who cares? It’s all about the driving experience. The seats are good and the driver’s seat puts all the controls within easy reach. Our specimen is one to lick your fingers at. A fully restored example, with a tweaked engine and a tightened chassis. On top of that, it comes with delicious rally equipment. Fun fact, it recently completed a major rally adventure of 3,000 kilometres in Japan! So belonged to a true enthusiast! Fancy a lively adventure in a driving history book? Don’t hesitate, get in touch with us directly. • 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint 1

Delivered new to New York in 1960, this Giulietta Sprint represents the very best that Alfa Romeo produced. Launched in April of 1954 at the Turin Motor Show, the fresh Bertone design was a showstopper and demand were off the scale. Orders exceeded 500 on day one and total sales exceeded 130,000 cars before production ceased in 1965. Its position as one of Alfa’s greats was secured. Not only was it a wonderful car to look at its performance was outstanding. Never intended as a race car, its advanced specification and weight of around 900kg had proved to many Italian drivers that it would be well suited to the 1300 cc class in GT racing, which was growing rapidly in popularity at that time. It went onto to score countless victories at home and overseas and was regularly at battle with Porsches and other cars of fine pedigree. According to the Heritage Certificate which accompanies the car our Giulietta was produced in 1959 and was originally Nero in colour. It made it to Australian shores in the late eighties and since then it has had just 3 owners with the current owner now thinning his collection after 14 years of ownership. The original 1300cc motor has been replaced by a later Alfetta unit fitted with twin webers which gives the car a healthy increase in power and torque and makes for an entertaining drive. The 5-speed gearbox is a delight to use, and the 5th gear makes for more comfortable driving at higher speeds. Out on the open road the little Sprint is a delight and its reputation for a giant killer easy to understand. The steering, suspension and lack of weight make for an agile car with spirited driving characteristics. The car now wears an Alfa Rosso colour which was applied around 25 years ago. The body of the car is in good solid condition with no signs of significant rust or rot. At distance the paint presents well however on closer inspection it shows surface imperfections with some age-related marks here and there. It has been this way for many years and can of course be left as is or can be attended to by the new owner. The body is without any significant bumps or damage, and we feel would benefit from a good cut, polish and detail however it retains a good shine as is. The brightwork presents well from a distance however is showing signs of age with some pitting and fading on some areas. The interior was replaced by the current owner some 9 years ago which included cars and seat upholstery. The seats whilst not correct for an Alfa Romeo suit the car well. The headlining is original and shows minimal staining and is tight and in place. The wheels have been refurbished at some point with correct profile tyres. The boot still has its original mat and the boot floor is in good order with a spare wheel. The combination of a larger engine, fine-handling, responsive chassis and excellent brakes make the Giulietta Sprint a true Alfa Romeo and explains why these stylish cars continue to attract the discerning enthusiast today. Overall, this represents a great ‘drivers car’ which can be driven as is or further improved by the next owner should they wish to. The car will be sold unregistered but freshly serviced and ready to go. 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Сlassic Сar Market If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1964-abarth-simca-2000-gt-1

The Abarth-Simca 2000 was introduced in 1964, powered by a 1,946-cc engine producing over 200 brake horsepower. The motor breathed through 58-millimetre-choke Weber carburettors, the largest Webers ever manufactured. Lightweight and powerful, Abarth-Simca 2000 GTs quickly gained a reputation for being the automotive equivalent of David to the Goliath figure posed by the likes of Ferrari, Porsche, or Jaguar. Many examples went on to dominate hill climb championships and circuit racing, putting the major manufacturers on notice. Chassis number 136 0046 was first registered on 9 January of 1964 to SpA Abarth & Co with the Turin registration “TO 596033”, according to the original libretto. The car’s recorded homologation date was 30 December 1963, meaning chassis 136 0046 is one of the first Abarth-Simca 2000s built. While not much is known about 136 0046’s early history, a photograph exists of the car racing mid-season at Mainz-Finthen airfield in Austria on 14 June 1964. The known sister Works cars were registered on later Turin numbers “TO 622651” and “TO 622652” and were used throughout the 1964 sportscar racing season. Like the other Works cars, chassis 0046 was retired and sold off by Abarth in 1965 and later de-registered, making its whereabouts difficult to trace. In John De Boer’s The Italian Car Registry, 136 0046 is noted as being present at the Mostra Padova show in 1991, when it was owned by Mauro Lotti of Florence, who acquired the car via Giancarlo Ferri. This Abarth was purchased by the father of the consigning owner from a Tuscan collector in 2019. The following year, the 2000 GT received a service, which included an engine rebuild and four new tyres. Today, chassis 136 0046 retains the correct-type 236 Abarth-Simca engine and Weber carburettors. While the car has a few deviations from the factory standards, it is a wonderful example, likely residing in Italy following its brief racing career. These Abarth-Simcas 2000 GTs are said to provide an incredible driving experience and have well-earned their giant-killer reputation both in period and historic motorsport events alike. Looking resplendent in light blue paintwork, this would be an exciting car to race at events such as the Tour Auto or Goodwood Revival, but also the perfect car for some spirited Sunday morning driving. 1964 Abarth Simca 2000 GT RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1983 Porsche 928S

White Lines (Don’t Do It) is playing at full tilt from the tape player and you’re sporting a fringe Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet would be proud of. It’s 1983 and you’re driving a perfect example of 80’s pure madness and ‘look at me’ crazy excess – a Porsche 928S with what we believe is a Koenig body kit in oh so subtle banana yellow. The history of Koenig is an interesting one (incidentally they still exist, and you can still purchase their body kits). Willy König was a known German race car driver who drove Ferrari’s and met Enzo Ferrari himself. Apparently, he wasn’t entirely impressed with the performance of his first Ferrari a 365 BB and promptly set about improving it which including extending the bodywork. Whilst it was not initially to everyone’s taste the performance was undeniable and demand was there. Koenig with an ‘e’ was born and Koenig Specials became the definitive statement of wild performance and looks. Other tuning and styling houses came along to such as Strosek, Gemballa and Brabus. Collectively they epitomised the 80’s appetite for crazy excess. Koenig was known for putting his design mark on several exotic cars including Ferrari’s, Mercedes and Porsche. We believe our 928S is an example of one of these, however we have no records to confirm it. There isn’t much known about the early history of this 1983 928S. The current owner acquired the car 2 years ago with the intention of returning it to its former glory however new projects have become a greater need and he is now thinning his collection down. We understand the car spent most of its time in Japan where Koenig cars had quite a following. It is possible the conversion occurred there which was not uncommon and not an inexpensive exercise. Our car still has its original and very desirable BBS wheels with steam roller sized 345 PZero tyres. The body whilst it looks ok at distance needs work with splits in the paint and cracks in various parts of the body kit. The boot lid shows some corrosion however the rest of the car looks solid. The current owner has had some recent electrical and engine work done and a compression test shows no issues. The door cards are missing however the rest of the interior is there. The car starts easily, shows no signs of smoke, and runs and changes gear as it should. It sounds fantastic and has a great exhaust note. This is a wonderful driving project and opportunity to own a very rare car – try and find another like it! 1983 Porsche 928S Сlassic Сar Market If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra 1

Slotting a Ford V-8 engine into the chassis of an AC Ace proved to be a brilliant idea for Carroll Shelby. The thundering Cobra—rooted in the impressive racing career and boundless grit of its creator—singlehandedly vaulted Ford Motor Company’s corporate racing program onto the international stage and marked a crucial step in its eventual dominance over archrival Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the 1960s. Under Shelby’s leadership, and with the help of a dream team of racing luminaries that included Ken Miles, Phil Remington, Pete Brock, and many others, Ford-powered Cobras won virtually anywhere and everywhere they raced. Brutally fast and dead-reliable, the Cobra clinched the US Manufacturer’s Championship three years running—in 1963, 1964, and 1965—and with sleek Pete Brock-designed Daytona Coupe bodywork, Shelby American Inc. won the hotly contested 1965 FIA World Manufacturer’s Championship. Uncompromising and fiercely aggressive on the racetrack, the 289 Cobra, with its 289-cubic-inch V-8, was an instant icon, yet Shelby knew that to stay competitive, it was essential to continually increase power. Enter Ford’s mighty 427 engine: a big-block monster of almost otherworldly power. Shelby was initially promised a new aluminum-block version of Ford’s 390 FE engine, but corporate infighting at Dearborn left him with an allotment of the heavier cast-iron-block 427. The new Cobra creation debuted at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1964, driven by Ken Miles. While early handling challenges clearly needed addressing, the tremendous performance potential was unmistakable. Shelby’s team then set about creating a chassis capable of handling the 427-cubic-inch behemoth’s increased power and weight. The revised design featured a four-inch tube frame and seven-inch wider body with larger fenders. Using the same computer as on the GT40, Ford engineers crafted a highly sophisticated coil-over suspension, all within the original 90-inch wheelbase. Dubbed the 427 Cobra in a staff meeting on 7 April 1965, Shelby’s big-block beasts were never mass-produced, with just over 300 built. The cars were incomprehensibly fast, and driving one today is as mind-bending of an experience as ever. Built in May of 1966, chassis number CSX 3237 was originally finished in red with a black interior and fitted with a 428-cubic-inch Cobra Jet V-8 engine. The car’s first known owner was J. Rhoades Moore of Enid, Oklahoma, according to the Shelby American Automobile Club Registry. The car remained with Moore until it was sold to another Oklahoma-based owner, French Hickman, in the early 1970s, at which time it was reported to have been refinished in blue. In the 1980s, CSX 3237 was refinished in red and equipped with a handful of updates, including an oil cooler, hood scoop, quick jacks, black side pipes, and custom roll bar. Passing through a few subsequent owners, the car was finally purchased by Phil Combs of California in December of that year. At that time the car was sent to renowned Cobra restorer Mike McCluskey for a full restoration to factory-original specification. Afterwards CSX 3237 was sold to an owner in Japan in the 1990s, where it remained for a few years before returning to the United States. Purchased by noted collector David Fonvielle in the mid-2010s, CSX 3237 was shipped to the renowned Cobra specialists at Curt Vogt’s Cobra Automotive in Wallingford, Connecticut for another full restoration. No expense was spared in bringing this Cobra to brilliant condition, with the goal of not only creating a show winner but also making it ready to drive and enjoy on long-distance tours at a moment’s notice. All original components were rebuilt or upgraded during the restoration, and the car was fitted with proper leather seats, correct Wilton carpeting, the original steering wheel and air splitter, as well as custom exhaust headers. After the engine was rebuilt for high performance and touring, a dyno test showed 460 brake horsepower at the crankshaft. Acquired by the consignor in July of 2021, CSX 3237 has remained incredibly well cared for with very few miles driven under current ownership. It rides on original Sunburst wheels with Avon tires and includes a spare in the trunk. Notably, the car is accompanied by a convertible top with irons, side curtains, tonneau cover, reproduction owner’s manual, jack, grease gun, a can of paint, a spare set of Halibrand-style wheels mounted with tires, and a spare 428-cu.-in. Cobra Jet engine, the block for which has a date code that is correct for this model year of Cobra. A true performance-car icon in every sense, this well-prepared 427 Cobra will surely excel at whatever its next owner has in store, be it long-distance cruising or the concours lawn. 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer.
