This vehicle is located in one of our European showrooms and is eligible for importation to the United States. Please contact us for more information. Price includes delivery to our Aiken, SC facility and all applicable title fees, insurance, bonds, duties, import taxes, and transportation charges. Vehicle will be sold with clean and clear South Carolina title. Have you seen our rare and very attractive Lancia Flavia Sport Zagato 1800? Initially the Flavia was only available as a 4-door with an aluminium 1500 Boxer engine. This was shortly followed by the Pininfarina designed short-base 2-door coupé. The convertible came from Vignale, whilst Zagato took charge of the design for the lightweight Sport version. Our car is a unique Lancia with bodywork by Zagato. Her aluminium bodywork has wonderful stylistic characteristics such as the rear panoramic side windows, the convex front side windows, the panoramic front window screen and the opening convex rear window. Only 626 Zagato’s were made of which only 512 had the 1800 engine. Our Lancia Flavia Zagato, which left the factory in 1966, is in very good condition. She drives fantastic and she is a real head turner. She was extensively overhauled by Vere Lancia about twenty years ago and her body was extensively restored. A lot of her bad sheet metal was replaced, the doors were reconstructed, new reinforced sills and A-pillars were welded in and the floor of the trunk was renewed. Overall, her fine bodywork has good quality and well-fitting body panels. All decorative elements are in good order and the fine interior has been correctly looked after. This Zagato is in fine working order and drives perfectly. The upholstery of the interior was renewed. Now black leather. She also comes with a set of original steel wheels and the unrestored front and rear bumpers. The engine is original. Very well maintained and equipped with two twin Weber carburettors. The gearbox is also original, it shifts excellently. This is a very special Italian classic, scarce and highly sought after. She was also used for the Gaisbergrennen (regularity) where she came second overall. 1966 Lancia Flavia Sport Zagato Car Cave USA If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1971 Ferrari 365 GTC 4
General Overview When first introduced in 1970, the 365 GTC/4 was Ferrari’s top of the line model, a fast but civilized 2+2 intended for the well-heeled enthusiast who could drive this car daily. Enzo himself always drove (or had himself driven) in the 2+2 variants of the cars that bore his name. The GTC/4, having been specifically designed to meet growing premium markets for clientele seeking Ferrari performance in a comfortable touring car, offered more interior space, functional air conditioning, and power steering. In 1971, the first production cars were delivered, offering a welcome balance of thoroughbred performance and luxury. The beautiful Filippo Sapino designed, Pininfarina-built car received resounding praise from the motoring press who lauded the new crisp and progressive body architecture as dynamic while being considerably more manageable to drive than the 365 GTB/4 “Daytona” produced during the same period. Although the 365 GTC/4 shared many mechanical components with the Daytona, the new Pininfarina design, featured pop-up headlights and an impact absorbing perimeter front bumper which uniquely distinguished the GTC/4 from any other Ferrari. Even the remarkable V12 engine, which put out 335 hp, was modified by fitting six twin-choke side draft Weber carburetors instead of the Daytona down draft type, with the sole purpose of allowing a lower, more dramatic hood line. The 365 GTC/4 achieved performance numbers comparable to the Daytona, offering greater comfort, while allowing for two, albeit diminutive, rear seat passengers. During the brief two-year production run of 1971-1972, Ferrari built only 505 of these rare V12 front-engine rear-wheel-drive touring cars. History and Build Details of This Car According to the Marcel Massini report accompanying this Ferrari, this beautifully finished GTC/4 is a US specification left-hand drive example originally finished in Verde Pino and optioned with full leather interior, instruments in miles, air conditioning, and power windows. Assembly sequence #19 indicates this is a very early car further verified by the December 1971 factory completion tag mounted in the door jamb. In February 1972, the car was delivered new to Charles “Chic” Vandagriff’s Hollywood Sports Cars, Hollywood, CA. The car remained unsold until early 1973 when it was sold to the first owner in Los Angeles, CA, 1973, subsequently assigning a 1973 year to the title. In May 1979 the car was offered for sale in Los Angeles, described as sold new in 1973. In March 1984 the car was offered for sale in Ferrari Market Letter by Roger Joseph, Longmont, CO. At that time, it was described as dark green metallic (Verde Pino) with full tan leather and 60,000 meticulously maintained miles. By 1986, the car was offered for sale by Centennial Motor Company, Boulder, CO in the Ferrari Market Letter, this time noted with recent red paint and 63,000 miles. By 2007 Paul Phillips, Palm Coast, FL purchased the car. In 2016 the car was sold to the current consigning owner. Under current ownership this Ferrari was treated to a bare metal respray by top Ferrari paint expert Steve Beckman with careful attention paid to minor rust including the right subframe and other minor metal body areas prone to rust. Efforts for the body and paint work totaled $44,000. Under the hood, the engine was comprehensively rebuilt under the supervision of expert engine builder Rod Drew, totaling $60,000. Additional work included tending to many detailed parts and features of the car to make sure the quality of the finishes was the best that could be achieved. During the restoration the engine rebuild included boring and line honing the block and replacing the crank with a 400i unit which slightly increased displacement due to a 2mm longer stroke. The rebuild included new main bearings, new CP pistons and Carrillo rods, new valves, valve guides, oil seal rings, cap lash and valve buckets, new motor mounts, and sealing o-rings. For the timing case, a new timing chain and belts, tensioner, side pad, and Renold tensioner were installed. The gearbox was also rebuilt with new synchro rings and a new slider, including the thrust bearing, mounts, gaskets, and oil seals. Additional work included the following new parts: master cylinder, new clutch, thermostat, thermal switch, Magneti Marelli electronic control units, battery, fuel filters, oil filters, air filter, ignition wires and spark plugs, fuel pumps, hood struts, a new AC compressor and drier. The following items were rebuilt: the water pump, oil pump, starter motor, alternator, distributor, brake booster, radiator, electrical fans, condenser, lights and turn signal indicator, radio, and clock. All six dual throat Weber carburetors were removed, cleaned, rebuilt, and reinstalled. Based on their serial numbers, they are believed to be original to the car. While the car was under restoration, the interior was removed and comprehensively reupholstered in beautiful tobacco leather including door panels rear seating area, and new carpets. Condition Overview Today, this stunning Ferrari presents as possibly one of the best examples of a 365 GTC/4 in existence today. Seldom restored to this level of excellence, the finishes and mechanical performance are impressive. In addition to being a very early car (the 19th delivered), the restoration has spared no expense to deliver quality finishes throughout. Refinished in stunning deep blue, the paint has a wonderfully smooth, glossy finish. Even critical inspection of the various trim, window moldings, and details reveals exceptional quality and care afforded to all finishes. The panel fit and closures are very well done, including the doors which close with a crisp ping. Unlike many GTC/4s, the front and rear bumpers are in beautiful condition with excellent fit to the front of the car and no visible warping to these distinctive surfaces. The original Casalegno and Sigla glass pieces, including the windshield, are in excellent condition as are the delicate chrome trim window surrounds, door handles, and side marker lights. The car sits on correctly finished Cromodora wheels with chrome center hubs and knockoffs wearing correctly sized Pirelli tires. The dramatically sloped rear glass and rear deck are design features unique to this model, accented by handsome quad tailpipes evoking the desirable V12 sound. The interior is in exceptional condition throughout with a cohesive appearance consisting of warm tobacco leather and correct materials for the dashboard, headliner, rear seating area, and carpeting. The seats are comfortable and properly bolstered with just the right give to the seat structure and perfectly tailored seat pleats, piping, and seat details. The door panels and armrests have been correctly reupholstered using contoured material to match factory specifications. The “mousehair” dash material properly covers the top of the dash and instrument binnacle. The dash is pleasing to the touch and the material still fits tautly. The instrumentation is clear, the dial faces are visually crisp, and the switches and various knobs appear in excellent overall condition. The original engine and engine compartment is reflective of the care and detail performed during the restoration. The level of appearance and overall cosmetic presentation is both correct, accurate, and certainly capable of concours level competition. The engine displays correctly rebuilt original components, proper hardware, and fasteners, reflective of the detailed work performed on this car. The six side-draft Weber carburetors, factory air cleaners, and correct cam cover finish are among the many correct details of this restoration. The trunk has been properly finished with black carpet, concealing a correct wheel and tire. The underside is straight, and solid, representative of the high-quality restoration performed on the car. The car starts easily warm or cold, settling into a smooth idle while delivering a wonderful exhaust note. The seating position is particularly good, especially for drivers with long legs. The gearbox is easy to use with good synchromesh working in harmony with the clutch. The brakes operate well, tracking evenly and coming down from higher speeds with ease. Acceleration is brisk, exhibiting progressive power as revs climb, and composed handling at higher speeds. Visibility is expansive due to the sweeping rear glass and quarter windows. The car comes with an original owner’s manual set, jack, hub spanner, jack bag and accessories, tool set in factory suitcase, and four music cassette tapes ranging from the dulcet tones of Led Zeppelin to wildly creative Gregorian Chants. The beautifully designed Ferrari 365 GTC/4 is a compelling vintage Ferrari embodying all the desirable vintage front-engine V12 attributes in an attractive, usable, and comparatively affordable package. Although nearly three times as many Daytonas were built when compared to the 365 GTC/4, the GTC remains a fraction of the price today and are easily the more enjoyable car for touring and GT motoring. Elegant and well-appointed, this beautifully restored 365 GTC/4 presents as a rare opportunity to purchase one of the most usable highest-performing classic Ferraris ever built. 1971 Ferrari 365 GTC 4 Fantasy Junction If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1979-ford-rs2000-custom
Ford’s long awaited ‘droop snoot’ RS 2000 was launched at the Earls Court show of October 1975. It was the most luxurious of the sporting Escorts of the time. Powered by an updated version of the 2.0-litre OHC Pinto unit, with a four into two exhaust manifolds coupled to a big bore exhaust system it produced 110bhp. This propelled the RS2000 from 0-60mph in just 8.5 secs and onto a top speed of 110mph. The 1979 Ford Escort RS2000 Custom offered here at Autostorico is finished in its original Signal Yellow with Black cloth interior trim. First registered on 7th November 1979 to Currie Motors, Kingston on Thames as their demonstrator before passing to its first private owner in May 1980. These included a fully rebuilt Vulcan 2100 Pinto engine with Maxiflow unleaded head, Piper 285 cam, lightened flywheel, Twin Weber carburettors modified for Pinto use with manual choke and period Janspeed 4 branch manifold and exhaust system. The gearbox is a Type 9 5 speed, with vented braking upgrades from a 2.8i Capri. - 1979 Lotus Esprit S2 JPS
Well presented and remarkably original, Number 61 of the 100 UK examples of the JPS Lotus Esprit S2 has covered just 26,235 miles from new. Technically called the World Championship Commemorative Model, but more colloquially known as the John Player Special, this was the first and arguably the most memorable limited-edition Esprit from Lotus. Dubbed the JPS due to its distinctive black and gold livery, inspired by the ground effect, JPS-sponsored, championship-winning Lotus 79 cars of the period, as raced by Mario Andretti and Ronnie Petersen. Originally planned to build 200 examples, it was believed that just 185 were produced, 100 for the UK, 55 for the United States and 30 for Europe. The eye-catching specification included gold-coloured side stripes complete with World Champion lettering, gold-coloured front and rear windscreen surrounds and alloy wheels, gold-effect corduroy seat inserts and a 3-spoke leather-rimmed steering wheel instead of the normal plastic offering. The 'Juke Box' installed was a Hitachi Digi-One radio-cassette. The 1,973cc 16-valve DOHC engine delivered a feisty 160bhp which was sufficient to sprint the 1,980lb fibreglass-bodied two-seater to 60mph in 6.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 124mph. The short production run lasted from December 1978 to July 1979. This nicely original limited edition JPS Esprit, with just 26,235 miles from new, has formed part our vendor's Lotus-themed collection for nearly 15 years. The Lotus Cars Records correspondence states that it was #61 of 100 right-hand drive UK cars produced in early 1979 and our particular example rolled off the line on 20th February 1979 prior to being sold through the London Lotus Centre in Chelsea. The comprehensive history file contains a good timeline of its history and multiple recent invoices from marque specialists for services, a new exhaust, cam belt changes and most recently a fuel pump. The file also contains copies of various press articles and a copy of Motorsport Magazine featuring this car in an advert promoting Omologato Watches. This original JPS Esprit is truly worthy of any collection of rare Lotus cars or, better still, is to be enjoyed with the handling and performance that disgraced supercars of the day and the undoubted cachet of that distinctive Formula 1 World Championship-winning livery. 1979 Lotus Esprit S2 JPS Iconic Auctioneers Ltd If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 2000 Aston Martin DB7 Vantage
This DB7 Vantage Chassis # SCFAB2236YK300368 has had 5 owners from new, and is believed to be the 368th out of the 1,477 Vantages produced. It was ordered as you see it today, in Aston Martin Racing Green over fern/parchment interior. Delivered new by Aston Martin of Troy, Michigan, to the first owner in Oklahoma. According to the original window sticker copy on file, the first owner ordered this DB7 with a premium audio system, Carbon fiber sports steering wheel, carbon fiber veneers, parchment leather seat backs, white dials, parchment leather headlining, a cup holder, manual drilled pedal pads in a matt finish, and a carbon fiber gear shift knob all of these choices amounting to a sporting-oriented grand tourer. As well as what has become a rare and desirable spec today. The first owner consistently serviced at John Eagle Aston Martin in Duncan, OK. The car was sold to its second owner in 2005, in Deephaven Minnesota. With its second owner this DB7 was serviced at Lake Forest Motorcars and Maserati of Minneapolis. We believe the third owner to have purchased the car in 2011, having subsequently serviced the car at Maserati of Minneapolis. Shortly after it appears this DB7 was then purchased by its fourth owner in 2012 who retained little service history in the record. However we believe it was most likely serviced and well maintained given the car’s condition and subsequent records. The car’s mileage went from 8,660 to 19,183 from 2012 to 2018. The fifth owner, from 2018 to current has consistently serviced the car at Aston Martin marque specialists during their care including AutoSport Designs and Steel Wings. More recently, in preparation for sale, this DB7 received a no expense spared service at Leading Edge Autosport addressing any and all findings in addition to new tires. Making this a 100% up-to-date DB7 with no needs, a rare opportunity in the world of DB7’s. Offered with detailed service records, this example has been thoroughly maintained and well kept having been serviced with all issues involving Aston Martin part recalls taken care of. This is truly a well kept DB7 that is worthy of any collection or the ultimate one-car garage. A timeless and elegant car of the era and a symbol of Aston Martin’s revival and superb design. Offered with the sale are both keys, original manuals, tool kit, spare, and available service records. Exterior Body and paint This DB7 shows to have been very well kept. The car appears to have never been in any accidents, is free of dents and overall is straight with excellent panel gaps and fitment. The paint shows nicely throughout with meter readings showing 3.5-6.0 mils throughout with no evidence of any paintwork noted. The front fenders and trunk as well as the bumpers are all composite so we could not meter them, however with the exception of the front bumper it appears none of these panels have ever been painted either. The front bumper has been refinished but was done to a very high standard. Glass and trim All of the glass appears to be the original Triplex units free of any major blemishes beyond a very small amount of delaminating on the lower corner on the passenger side. The trim is all present, including the often missing rubber surrounds for the fog lights. Wheels The wheels are in excellent condition overall with no curb rash, though the holes for the lugs do show some light scratching from taking lugs in and out over the years. Notable flaws The biggest issues that stood out in our inspection are as follows: the driver and passenger side front fenders show a handful of small pencil point sized chips toward the front in a handful of places. The driver's door edge shows a small chip and a further chip below the trim line on the door surface. The clear bra behind all of the wheels on the lower wheel arches are all cracking and were likely installed when the car was new. None of these are worth addressing, but need to be disclosed. Interior Seats and surfaces The interior of this DB7 compliments the exterior and is ultimately what makes this car so special. The mixture of parchment and green with the carbon and white gauges makes for a unique and very well ordered example. DB7’s are not often seen with this particular combination. We can see that the interior is reflective of the mileage in terms of its condition. Signs of use, but generally in good condition and well cared ful. The door panels, sills, kick panels, dash, seats, rear seats, carpet etc… are all in excellent condition overall. We see some minor fading on a few of the carbon pieces and some minor scuffing to the sills from entry and egress. The headliner shows to be sagging a bit toward the rear, but this is common in nearly all DB7’s. Functionality and accessories All buttons, knobs, switches or the like are improper working order. The HVAC systems, lighting and audio systems were improper working order at the time of testing. Engine bay and trunk Engine bay The engine bay presents beautifully with everything appearing stock, serviced, and in order. The only item that jumps out is a missing flange/seat for one of the zeus fasteners that holds on the drivers side engine bay panel. Otherwise it is clean and tidy. Trunk area The trunk is clean and tidy as well, removing the trunk floor shows the spare and full tool kit with nothing missing. No evidence of any accidents or any other issues are noted. Underside The underside is clean but reflective of the mileage showing signs of use and perhaps a minor scrape here or there. We must note that the underside photos were taken prior to the suspension servicing this car received before being listed for sale. Mechanicals Engine The engine starts easily and settles down to a calm idle. The engine pulls hard, strong, and without any unwanted noises or smoke, freely revving through the RPM range. No issues to note. Transmission The clutch feels excellent and the shifts are easy with all synchro’s in good condition, no issues to note with its function. Brakes and suspension The suspension benefits from recent servicing and has been recently signed off on as in order with no issues to note. The brakes have ample life left and benefit from recently refinished calipers. The brakes do their job well with no pulling, pulsating or warping present in the rotors. Tires The tires are recently installed Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 265/35 ZR18 (rear) and 245/40 ZR18 (front) with date codes of 2024 on all 4 corners. Driving experience The DB7 set in motion a new era for Aston Martin, and given the Vantage was the first Aston Martin GT car with a V12, it had a lot to live up to as it carried the brand into the new millennium. This car is amazing to drive, comfortable, powerful, and capable. Even better this example, unlike so many others, is fully serviced with an open checkbook approach and always has been - a rarity for DB7’s. This is a beautifully spec’d performer that is ready for anyone looking to seriously drive a DB7. A proper one car garage or addition to any serious collection. 2000 Aston Martin DB7 Vantage LBI Limited If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright This DB7 Vantage Chassis # SCFAB2236YK300368 has had 5 owners from new, and is believed to be the 368th out of the 1,477 Vantages produced. - 1971 Ford Escort RS1600
This Aveley-built, 1971 RS1600 is undoubtedly one of the best FIA Mk1, Group 2 Escorts in Europe with an HTP valid until 2028. Totally reliable, extremely competitive - a stunning, turn-key package, built by the Jordan Racing Team in 2021 - build number 2021-031. This car is an original, Aveley-built, Ford Escort RS1600 sourced by the late Mike Bell in Belgium in 2011 as an original road car and which he subsequently converted to a full-spec, Group 2 race car. Mike was an experienced and much liked circuit racer who wanted to build a special race car finished in the colours of his beloved Norwich FC but to a genuine period Zakspeed design. This car eventually became known as "The Lairy Canary” and was much admired from the start. He ran it very successfully in FIA Saloon Car races all over Europe until his sad passing. It was subsequently acquired by Iconic Auctioneers Chairman, Nick Whale, during 'lock-down' in 2020/2021, and immediately entrusted to the renowned, Midlands-based, Jordan Racing Team for a professional rebuild. Mike and his team stripped the car completely and invested many hours of detailed work in the bodyshell, including seam-welding and lightening and strengthening where required. A welded-in, FIA-specification, roll-cage was fitted and all the running gear components, including the brakes, suspension and drive train, were either rebuilt or replaced. The engine/gearbox were sold and a new, ultimate-spec, 2-litre BDG was ordered from Jondel Race Engines and mated to a new ZF five-speed gearbox. The car was completely repainted by the long-established competition car painting specialists, Normandale in Daventry. When finished, the car was set-up, driven and tested by both Mike and Andrew Jordan and then raced successfully by Nick and Harry Whale in the Motor Racing Legends series in 2021 and 2022 with class wins and top-ten finishes every time out. The car also competed in the 2023 Mallorca Rally, finishing 1st in class and 5th overall and is road registered with all the necessary parts to run highly competitively in both races and rallies to FIA Group 2 Saloon spec. The FIA HTP paperwork was renewed when JRT rebuilt the car and is valid until December 2026 (FIA Class: CT24 Period H1 - 1972 to 1975).After the Mallorca event, the engine was sent for a complete refresh, as was the gearbox, and a new clutch was fitted at the same time. Its next outing was the 2023 Silverstone Classic driven by Touring Car legend, Matt Neal, partnered by Harry Whale, once again achieving a class win and a very strong 5th overall in an ultra competitive FIA Saloon grid with Motor Racing Legends. The car has not been used since and is sold as it finished, with a fresh engine and gearbox and an undamaged racing history. It is both demonstrably reliable and extremely competitive with a genuine reason for sale. The Lairy Canary is undoubtedly one of the best Mk1, Group 2 Escorts in Europe and is sold with spares and 12 wheels as a full turn-key package with help and guidance if required. Not the cheapest, but the best never is. All inspections welcomed and encouraged, please call Nick or Harry for further details on both the car and spares package. 1971 Ford Escort RS1600 Iconic Auctioneers Ltd If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright Constructed at the works in Newport Pagnell on 17th November 1964, this beautiful DB5 was finished in Dubonnet Rosso coachwork with Beige Conolly VM846 hides and fitted with Selectaride shock absorbers, triple SU HD8 carburettors, Avon Turbospeed tires and 3.73:1 rear axle ratio Despatched to supplying dealer H.W.Motors Ltd on 31st December in readiness for collection by first owner R.D.Soole Esq of Coombe Park, Malden, Surrey. The DB5 was registered on 1st January 1965 and issued with ‘GPA 655C’ which remains on the car to the present day The service notes recorded on the original build sheet show the car was used extensively within the first few years and maintained by the factory, with mileage noted at 28,356 during a return trip to the factory in September 1966. By April 1969 the DB5 had passed to second owner, Major General R.C.M. King of Eversley Cross, Hampshire Major General Robert Charles Moss King C.B, D.S.O, O.B.E had an illustrious career that included being the Head of British Joint Services Mission in Washington D.C in 1951. He was later appointed as Deputy Director of Military Operations at the War Office in 1953 which together with the Admiralty, Air Ministry and Ministry of Aviation became the Ministry of Defence on April 1st 1964. Major General R.C.M.King also held the esteemed position of Deputy Constable of Dover Castle from 1954 to 1956 Original AM factory invoices retained on file to Major General King dated 1st May 1969 document extensive work to the cooling system, cylinder head rebuild, timing chain adjustment, carburettor rebuild, 20,000 mile service and brake rebuild at 40,153 miles. Further invoices from H.W.Motors between 1969 and late 1970 detail his regular use with mileage noted at 49,144 miles on 31st December 1970 By July 1971 the DB5 was acquired by third owner Mr Kenneth Kerr of Ashmac Service Ltd, Egham, Surrey, who is understood to have purchased the car via HWM after Major General King part exchanged it for a newer model. Throughout the 1970s Mr Kerr continued to use and enjoy the DB5 as evidenced by various service invoices from A.Tocock Motor Engineers of Market Square, Staines and Maybridge Auto Engineering with mileage recorded at 96,972 miles in March 1975 By the late 1970s both Mr Kerr and his DB5 had repatriated to his homeland in the Scottish Highlands and it was subsequently sold to fourth owner Mr Alexander Grant on 26th October 1981, a close friend of Mr Kerr. For the next thirty-two years the DB5 remained in the hands of Mr Grant and saw little use in the latter years of his custodianship, eventually being sold to the previous owner on 2nd October 2013 in complete and original condition but needing complete restoration Between 2014-2017 the DB5 was the subject of a comprehensive restoration by marque specialist Rikki Cann, who stripped the car to its bare chassis and undertook an extensive body, chassis, mechanical and cosmetic restoration at a cost of GBP 400,000, fully documented with supporting invoices and photographs. The original engine was rebuilt to 4.2L specification and fitted with an uprated handling kit, the body repainted in Dubonnet Rosso and interior re-trimmed in Beige hides and the Aston returned to the road in August 2017 following the completion of the restoration Acquired by the vendor in late 2021 who has enjoyed the Aston on high days and holidays with all service and maintenance work undertaken by marque exponents R.S.Williams in recent times. Offered in superb condition having covered a mere two thousand miles since restoration, supplied with a well-documented history file and excellent provenance, this DB5 is ready for its next adventure! - 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS
Regarded as one of the greatest air-cooled Porsches—and among the finest all-around sports cars—ever constructed, the 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7 rightly sits at the center of many world-class collections. Yet the Carrera RS 2.7 presented here offers even more to the discerning enthusiast: It is one of only 200 examples of the hallowed model built in the factory Lightweight specification. Further enhancing its desirability, is an extremely rare United States-delivery car with a known history from new. Equipped with its numbers-matching Type 911/83 magnesium-crankcase engine and numbers-matching five-speed gearbox, and also exhibiting the correct under-dash Porsche production number, it is finished in its factory-correct colors. As noted by the copy of its original Porsche Fahrzeug-Auftrag (vehicle order form) on file dated 29 May 1973, this chassis was specified in Grand Prix White (908) with red exterior lettering over a Black leatherette interior. Factory options include a tinted/heated rear window, three-point seat belts, and left and right headsets; of course, the order form also notes the coveted lightweight Sport package (M471), representing a suite of features and deletions that, taken together, shaved over 200 pounds off the comparable Touring model in the pursuit of uncompromised performance. According to the original sales invoice on file from Holbert’s Porsche Audi of Warrington, Pennsylvania, the car was sold new to Halsey Frederick on 16 March 1974. Interestingly, along with the $15,000 cash price for the new Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight, the invoice notes an immediate repaint from its factory Grand Prix White to the Porsche color Albert Blue, bringing the total cost to $15,500. Although Mr. Frederick was noted as a resident of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, he apparently kept the car in New Hampshire; a 1974 letter on file details minor service work done to the car, and requests additional sealed beam headlights to help pass the Granite State’s vehicle inspection process. Mr. Frederick scrupulously cared for this rare Porsche for nearly 25 years, with invoices on file detailing the attention he lavished on the car. In addition to routine service and maintenance items, in 1975 he also had the vehicle rust-proofed and custom-ordered Recaro seats to replace the rather spartan Lightweight-specification factory units. When he parted ways with the Porsche in the late 1990s, it was noted as displaying fewer than 32,000 miles. The second owner of this 911 was none other than illustrious collector Otis Chandler, who soon began the process of returning the car to its as-delivered appearance. As indicated by invoices and photos on file, the Albert Blue paint was removed from the car’s well-preserved bodywork, and its Grand Prix White (with red lettering) exterior appearance was restored. Further, its custom Recaro seats were replaced with correct Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight buckets. Chandler sold the restored car on in October 2001, and it remained in the collection of its third owner for a decade. In 2011, the 911 was acquired by the White Collection, and its previous restoration benefitted from further fine-tuning, including the restoration and fitment of proper staggered, color-matched Fuchs wheels, the fitment of a correct heat exchanger, and the replacement of perishable rubber components and hardware with factory-correct components. While in the collection, the car has been started monthly and run to operating temperature. Appearing now as it left the factory, and retaining its numbers-matching Type 911/83 engine and gearbox, this 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 Lightweight is an authentic and extremely rare, United States-delivery example of the sports car against which all others are judged. 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1954-maserati-a6-gcs
Maserati A6 GCS chassis number 2065 was one of two such cars ordered from Maserati in 1953 by the French Importers Garage Mirabeau in Paris. The sister car, chassis no. 2064 was retained and raced by Jean Simone, who was the co-owner of Garage Mirabeau along with Jean Thepenier. Chassis no. 2065 was delivered to Armand Roboly. Simone and Roboly had raced many times as co-drivers in a Jaguar C-Type, and were close friends and enthusiastic participants in French motor racing of the era. Chassis number 2065’s build sheet indicates that it was completed on 11 April 1954 and given a temporary Italian registration number of BO 36382. The colour was noted in the build sheet as French Blue, however contemporary photographs suggest it was in a lighter hue than usual. Following delivery to France, Armand Roboly gave the new car its first outing in late April 1954 at the Marrakech Grand Prix in Morocco. His friend Jean Simone raced the sister car in the same event. Roboly finished that race in 3rd place, whilst unfortunately Simone was injured in a crash. The A6 GCS then participated actively in France during the 1954 season, including entries at the Coupes de Paris, 12 Heures of Reims, Grand Prix des Sables d’Olonne, Grand Prix de la Baule, and the Coupes de Salon at Montlhéry. The car’s early racing history is beautifully chronicled in Walter Bäumer and Jean-François Blachette’s recently published book, Maserati A6GCS. Chassis no. 2065 was then sold, most probably again through the business relationship Roboly maintained with Garage Mirabeau, although the car was physically collected in Modena suggesting that it was factory refurbished and prepared prior to sale. Its new owner was Andre Loens, a native of Northern France but at that time resident in Southampton in the UK. Loens was a highly competent driver who was very active in 500 cc racing and the purchase of this A6 GCS must have been a significant investment for him and a serious step up the racing ladder. The car was kept in its blue livery and retained its temporary Bologna registration markings. The car first reappeared in native Northern France at Lille, and its arrival was enthusiastically described in the local press. Loens’ first outing with the car however was in the UK where it was entered in the 2.0-litre class at the 1955 Goodwood Easter outing. Loens raced the car with great energy and some notable success during 1955, moving the car between Finland, France, Sweden, participating in the Swedish Grand Prix, then to Jersey, and finally back to the UK where he entered chassis no. 2065 in the 1955 Tourist Trophy at Dundrod in partnership with Jo Bonnier. The two drivers finished first in the 2.0-litre category. Their final race of 1955 was at Castle Combe in October. Loens’ intense activity with the car continued in 1956 with a similarly diverse set of entries sequentially in Helsinki, Belgium, France, Denmark, Sweden, and then back at France for the Coupe d’Automne and finally again at the Coupes de Salon where Loens is photographed happily conversing with Stirling Moss, Alfonso De Portago, and Harry Schell as they approached the track. In 1957, the season resumed in a similar pattern. The A6 GCS was again in Scandinavia in May, at Elaintarhanajo in Helsinki, followed by a return to Forez in France. We can well imagine that by this time, chassis no. 2065 was tired, and its physical condition today shows evidence of several racing incidents, notably some strengthening of the chassis members as they pass above the rear axle. Perhaps for this or some mechanical reasons, Loens appears in the car at the grid of the Deux Heures du Forez in July 1957 but did not start. This may have been a contributing reason for Loens to travel to Modena later that same month to trade his now well-used and surely much-loved A6 GCS for the more recently built 200 S. The Maserati factory archives record this transaction and whilst the car was evidently in an adequately drivable condition, such that it could arrive on the grid at Forez, Loens fatefully decided to exchange his faith in chassis number 2065 for a newer Maserati. Sadly, Loens died in an accident driving the new 200 S, back at the familiar circuit of Montlhéry in October 1957 whilst leading the race. The last recorded location for this A6 GCS has caused debate over the whereabouts of the car in the intervening years. It was not unusual for Maserati to take older model cars back into their stock for refurbishment and resale. In order to assist with sales of newer cars, Maserati themselves often refurbished racing cars for a ‘second’ life on the circuits. Given Andre Loens’ prolific activity with the car, we can imagine that it arrived back in Modena in a condition where a great deal of refurbishment work was needed. The car was by then approaching five years of age and whilst the A6 GCS was a highly reliable, much-loved, and still competitive racing car, with a strong following, it was also in 1957 that Maserati itself withdrew from racing and, simultaneously, that road racing was being banned in European countries following the series of fatal accidents. Under these circumstances it seems unlikely that Maserati, a company facing financial pressure at the time, and concentrating on its road cars, would have thought it a productive investment to restore a worn and well-used A6 GCS. What is well known and shown in numerous period photographs is that a large number of historical racing cars had been accumulated at the factory for the purpose of maintaining a heritage collection, together with a larger number of racing cars, complete and incomplete, in various forms of storage, repair, and restoration. The fact that chassis no. 2065 is documented as being one of such cars present at the factory at the end of its racing life in 1957 is an intriguing component to recent efforts to fill out the gaps in its history. In 1998, the factory department “Maserati Vendite”, issued by signed telefax, a copy of the build sheet of chassis no. 2065 to assist in a restoration of the car ongoing at the time in Reggio Emilia. Photographs of this restoration show a rolling chassis with partly disassembled bodywork and provide close detailed evidence that this car is the one offered here today. The accompanying documentation includes a number of attestations from the workshop, stating that the car was delivered to them as a ´rolling chassis’. This carrossière performed the full refurbishment and reassembly of the car, works mainly to the bodywork, however the identity of the owner at the time has not been ascertained. By 2001, now in a completely new livery of red and dark blue, chassis no. 2065 was introduced at a presentation given in a Maserati concessionaire in Modena. Photographs of the event show a number of recognisable attendees associated with the marque admiring the car at its first presentation in public. Shortly after this the car was sold to a well-known German collector driver of Maseratis in vintage racing. As such, the car then ran frequently in the Shell Historic challenge in the early 2000s. Following a subsequent sale of the car to an Australian collector, who entered the car twice in the Mille Miglia Historic, the well-known and highly respected race support and engineering firm of Hall & Hall in the UK took responsibility for maintenance and preparation. Both Rick and Rob Hall personally became fascinated by the car and its history. Together with the Historian Richard Crump they decided not to spend time trying to piece together the missing timeline, because for all anyone knew the car may never have left the factory to race in period again after 1957. Documentation of such re-purchased cars was disrupted during the turbulent periods of Maserati ownership by Citroen and De Tomasso. Instead Hall & Hall went back to basics and examined the car from a purely technical and engineering perspective. They became totally convinced that the car showed all the correct signs of originality together with the sort of repairs and scars which would have been inflicted during such a busy racing life. It was also noted that no attempts had been made to cosmetically improve the chassis, even in the area of the rear-end stiffening, which looks like a trackside repair, not one made with permanent intent. At this time the car was in good running condition following its relatively recent renaissance in Italy, and was being enjoyed by its owner, so Hall & Hall had no reason to fully dismantle the car and continue this forensic endeavor. The owner simply wanted to enjoy the car. CURRENT OWNERSHIP The current custodian of chassis no. 2065 had been a collector of twelve-cylinder Ferrari road cars since the mid-1990s. Despite owning cars such as an alloy-bodied 275 GTB with six-carburetors, he began to tire of the relative softness of such models and stepped out into the world of road-race cars when he purchased a 500 Mondial, and then added to that a 200 SI. Now a complete convert to this new motoring challenge, and all the event potential it offered, he explored these two four-cylinder models enthusiastically, partly in rallies with the Maserati Club of Italy, and came to the conclusion that he wanted to move to a six-cylinder car which would offer a more linear engine response and be better suited to long road events such as the Mille Miglia. Searching specifically for an A6 GCS, he found that chassis no. 2065 seemed to be the most original and well-prepared example on the market at the time, and thus it was purchased. During his ownership, the car has always been enthusiastically driven and has continued to appear in the Mille Miglia on now a total of five occasions within the last twelve years. However, the car was rarely transported to or from the event and instead was driven from Brescia and back to its summer storage in southwest France both on the heavily trafficked route along the French Riviera and over the Alpine routes. Typically, the current owner would add at least 1,200 km to the Mille Miglia itinerary in driving to and from the event. He admits to having stayed in more luxurious hotels than offered on the Mille Miglia, but he and his companions kept their clothes in an Ikea bag stored above the spare tyre. The car never missed a beat. The car is listed on the Registro 1000 Miglia and would be welcomed with open arms back to future iterations of the fabled event. In 2020, the well-used A6 GCS began to show signs of valve wear and whilst it was still performing reliably, the decision was made to do a complete engine restoration using the highly reputed French specialists, AB Racing SARL, the owner’s long-term support outfit for engineering and event preparation in Europe. This work happily coincided with the preparation of the recently published definitive book on the model, Maserati A6GCS, authored jointly by the knowledgeable Maserati historian Walter Bäumer and Jean-François Blachette, Club Maserati France Chairman, in which the car is appropriately referenced. Whilst the engine was removed for a complete rebuild, an opportunity was created to examine the car in close detail by dismantling many components such as brake drums, transmission, and chassis to reveal their mechanical story and to piece together a full understanding of what has happened to the car technically since its delivery in 1954. In summary, it was revealed that many components of the car had never been fully disassembled before. Wear patterns and the condition of internal components showed a perfect consistency. These include the brake drums, the sand cast block, and the cylinder head (which still bore the original steel wires used to hold the cores during casting). The chassis paint history can be traced and shows its correct series of coatings in sequence to what finally appears to have been a cheap and quick cosmetic overspray made during the Italian restoration. Many matching factory assembly numbers are present on the car and the serial number 2065 is of course stamped on the cylinder head and chassis. Additionally, after cleaning decades of grime on the steering box casing, the stamped number 2065 was also discovered in the correct Maserati font for the period. A most important discovery was also made on the anti-roll bars which have been sleeved and the sleeve seam then welded. This was barely visible under the layers of paint but reference to the 1954 build sheet, issued officially by the factory in 1998, states that a special client request was made to stiffen the roll bars—“barra de compensations diamètre 14 (Tipo a tube latérali saldati)”. As far as it is known, 2065 may be the only A6 GCS with this factory modification. A twelve-page detailed report is included in the history file. Whilst no work has been done to examine the bodywork, as the owner was keen to regain use of the car, the consensus is that as a running chassis, 2065 is amongst the most original A6 GCSs in existence. Its condition suggests strongly that the car was unused since its period racing days and then restored with quite minimal mechanical work perhaps in order for it to be sold in the early 2000s. It is presently in top mechanical condition, having seen little use since the thorough rebuild in 2024, and a fresh service in January 2025, making it ready to tackle any number of historic racing events in the 2025 season. 1954 Maserati A6 GCS RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer.
