  • 1957-mercedes-benz-300sl-roadster-3

Extremely original 300SL example, fully restored Numbers matching body, engine, and transmission Original factory Mercedes-Benz hardtop Beautiful combination of Mercedes-Benz Anthracite Grey Metallic (Anthrazit Grau DB172), over Light Grey leather interior Very rare European-spec headlights One of 1,858 examples ever built worldwide Complete engine rebuild and tuning by former Hjeltness Restoration engine builder Recent major mechanical restoration performed by 300SL experts Hjeltness Restoration, including transmission rebuild, brake system rebuild, valve and timing chain adjustment 3.0L inline 6 Bosch fuel-injected engine, 240HP, 217lb-ft of torque, 4-speed manual transmission Includes fitted luggage, books, tool kit, jack, spare wheel/tire How does a successful automotive company like Mercedes-Benz innovate the critically-acclaimed 300SL Gullwing? By removing the roof, of course. After 3 years of production of the 300 SLR-inspired road car, Mercedes-Benz began the second stage of the 300SL, releasing the Roadster to the world. Keeping the dramatic long hood at the front but massaging the rear to incorporate a newly-developed soft top and hardtop, the 300SL Roadster now had unlimited headroom for taller occupants. Sold from 1957 until 1963, it was considered a monumental success for Mercedes-Benz not only in terms of sales, but establishing the brand as a premiere luxury sports car builder. With only 1,858 examples ever built, the 300SL Roadster is a very rare automobile and one of the most beautiful designs crafted out of Sindelfingen, Germany. The Roadster acquired several updates in comparison to the Gullwing which all led to a more enjoyable driving experience. The drivetrain received notable upgrades in quality and performance, such as the 300SL Roadster 3.0L engine being upgraded to 240 horsepower from the Gullwing’s 212 horsepower due to the innovative Bosch fuel injection system vs. carburetors. The transmission of the Gullwing had semi straight-cut gears in its 4-speed transmission, more like a race car but had a distinctive whine while driving. The Roadster on the other hand gained a fully synchronized 4-speed manual transmission which was much quieter and smoother. Other improvements included a lowered rear axle for better handling, a lower sill in the interior for easier ingress and egress, and in general practicality improvements. This 1957 300SL Roadster has a unique story, remaining in the same family for over 50 years and then recently having a stunning restoration performed on it from a detail-oriented caretaker and critically-acclaimed architect, Jonathan Segal. The 300SL was first registered in March of 1958 to John D. Ryan of Ramsey, Montana and subsequently to Dr. John Gans of Morenci, Arizona before making its way to its 50+ year longtime caretaker, Merlin D. Peay, D.D.S. Merlin Deeon Peay graduated from Clifton High School at 17 years old and went immediately into the U.S. Navy during WWII. After completing his service, he attended and graduated from the University of Arizona in Pharmacy, eventually graduating from the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry at the top of his class. As part of maybe a graduate gift to himself, this 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL made its way to him in the early 1960s, with his first service record showing the summer of 1963, indicating 32,153 miles on the odometer. Peay attended and graduated from the Baylor College of Orthodontics in Dallas, Texas in 1966, where he likely used the 300SL as his primary vehicle in commuting. He was not worried about using the 300SL as intended, indicated by the April 11th, 1966 service receipt with an odometer indicating 57,680 miles! By September of 1970, records indicate Peay had accumulated over 88,000 miles on the odometer. Merlin had a penchant for things fast, which could be assumed by the next logical step after one of the world’s greatest sports cars: a pilot’s license. Famously known within his community as “The Flying Orthodontist”, he regularly commuted in his personal plane back and forth from his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico to Gallup, New Mexico for 26 years, a 4 hour and 260-mile round trip by car, and retired from Orthodontics in 1998. When renewing his Gullwing Group membership, his application indicated that in 1998 the 300SL roadster had 105,000 miles on the odometer. In December of 2013 Merlin passed away at the age of 87, leaving his beloved 300SL roadster to his wife, Darla. After a few months she decided it was time for the 300SL to find another caretaker who would enjoy the car as much as her late husband, and in early 2014 it was on its way to San Diego, California to critically-acclaimed architect and car restorer, Jonathan Segal FAIA. A caretaker of fine automobiles with an incredible sense of design through his work as an acclaimed architect, Jonathan Segal knew the 300SL Roadster had found the right home as a part of his collection. Meticulous, detail-oriented, and passionate with all of his vehicles, he enjoyed having them at their peak performance and in excellent condition, maintained by his personal in-house mechanic. Segal, known for his penchant of historic Masteratis, is not what you call an average collector. In the last 5 years alone, he took home a mind-boggling 9 awards from concourse shows, many with different cars and all restored under his supervision. These awards include Best of Show at the 2024 Concours of Elegance in Hampton Court Palace of the U.K. with his restored Maserati A6GCS Frua Spider, Best in Class at the 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Postwar Touring with his 1950 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Ghia Supergioiello Coupe, and 4 design awards at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance over multiple years. In an interview with Residential Design, Segal describes how he enjoys the one-off nature of many of his cars, disassembling cars apart alongside his son and learning how the cars were built, appreciating the craftsmanship as they restore cars together. Driving the 300SL around San Diego, Segal had a number of service items performed over the years by a variety of mechanical artisans. Hjeltness Restoration, famously known for their 300SL restorations, did a significant amount of work to restore the performance of the Roadster. This work at Hjeltness included completely rebuilding the 4-speed manual transmission, removing the existing fuel tank internal surface and recoating it, relining and arcing the brake shoes, installing new rear axle boots and four shocks, rebuilding the power brake diaphragm, installing new sway bar rubbers, adding a new clutch, disc and throw out bearing, resurfacing the flywheel, replacing muffler hangers, installing a new V-belt rear transmission mount, replacing shifter bushings, rebuilding the mechanical fuel delivery pump for the injection unit, updating and rebuilding the cross shaft linkage assembly, replacing the fuel injection pump vacuum diaphragm and adjusting the mixture on pump and throttle body. This mechanical work was done in preparation for the Colorado Grand, ensuring that the 300SL was ready for the long drive ahead to be enjoyed. Towards the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020, Segal had started thinking of the idea of cosmetically restoring the 300SL to a new period-correct color specification, Anthracite Grey Metallic with a Light Grey leather interior. Then, in early 2020, the Covid epidemic hit. He took this as the perfect time to restore the car while shops needed work to stay open and began the year-long process of restoring the 300SL Roadster. Ever meticulous with the Mercedes-Benz, Segal had the car disassembled at his facility before going to a reputable and noted paint facility in Southern California where the 300SL received a full bare-metal repaint. Anthracite Grey Metallic, DB172, was a period-correct Mercedes-Benz color that was used on 300SLs when they were originally for sale in the late 50s and early 60s. All of the brightwork and chrome was removed and sent out to be replated, NOS european-spec headlights were brought over personally by Segal from Europe at the tune of $30,000. Seals, gaskets, and any components that needed to be replaced were purchased with OEM parts from Mercedes-Benz Classic, ensuring their fitment and authenticity. The original interior was reupholstered in a light gray leather by two former Hjeltness employees who primarily did interior work for Hjeltness Restoration. Attention to detail was given to each and every stitch, so when said and done the interior was nothing short of fantastic. Paired with the Anthracite Grey Metallic paint, the color combination is a stunning example of a restoration done right. The engine, the 3.0L inline-6 engine, now with over 105,000 miles since it was originally new in 1958, was treated to a full engine rebuild by Mark Ballerini. Known for his engine building skills while at Hjeltness Restoration for his tenure of 10+ years, he was chosen to be the person to rebuild the 300SL’s engine. Once completed, Segal took the car on the California Mille, and Mark used this time to tune the engine to perfection. After the Roadster was restored and driven in the California Mille, Segal kept the car in his collection for a few more years, enjoying it thoroughly. After bringing it to its current state, and having it with him for more than 10 years, he decided that it was time for the car to find a new caretaker. The 300SL Roadster arrived at Canepa and was immediately entered into the “Canepa Difference” process, ensuring that cosmetically and mechanically it was perfect through inspection, and addressing anything that required attention. The car was put into Canepa’s detailing department where it was given a concours-level detailing of the underside, ensuring no dirt or oil was left. It next went through a multi-stage paint-polishing process to enhance the luster of the Anthracite Grey Metallic paint finish. Mechanically it was thoroughly inspected and found to be in excellent condition, driving well and starting without hesitation, and overall being ready to drive out into another car tour. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster is a magical car that attracts attention anywhere it goes. With a design that was well ahead of its time, there is no doubt that the 300SL is one of the most iconic vehicles in the world, bar none. Restored and sorted, this 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster is ready for another 50 years on the road and any concours lawn. 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster Canepa If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1960 Porsche 356 B T5 1600 S

On the 12th of March 1960 captain John T. Cox, then stationed in Germany, signed a sales contract with the Porsche agents Grosskloss in Saarbrücken for a new Porsche cabriolet. In May of the same year he finally received his 356 with a 75 hp engine, thus started an adventurous journey of this Porsche. As a high-ranking army officer of the US forces captain Cox was later stationed in Japan and then returned to the USA always accompanied by his beloved Porsche cabriolet. Until 2019 the 356 stayed with its first owner who, an officer to the bone, maintained a detailed record of the Porsches life and kept each and every receipt. The car was then taken over by a Dutch gentleman who had it completely restored by a specialist before importation into Holland. The result was this fantastic cabriolet in its original colour combination of “ivory” with a red leather and black softtop. In 2023 the Porsche was finally taken over by the vendor and imported into Germany but driven sparingly. This outstanding 356 is in fantastic condition and of course has a Porsche birth-certificate, a Reuter-folder as well as a completely documented history, a must for any well-furnished Porsche collection. The car has German documents on H-plates and Swiss custom duties have so far not been paid. For a Swiss buyer the car will be properly imported and MOT'd after the sale. 1960 Porsche 356 B T5 1600 S Oldtimer Galerie International GmbH If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1984 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV6

First seen in 1972, Giorgetto Giugiaro’s striking Alfetta fastback wedge design directly resulted from the opposing design requirements of delivering a car capable of carrying four people with luggage, modern looks and dynamic sports handling. It was required to replace the hugely successful 105 series cars which was a tough act to follow. The final design with its stunning looks is as beautiful today as it was some fifty years ago and its capability as a driver’s car has become legendary. Alfetta “little Alfa” in Italian, derived its name from the nickname of the 1951 Formula one, Tipo 159 Alfetta which also paired a transaxle layout to De Dion tube rear suspension. The rear de Dion transaxle (clutch and transmission) provided the new Alfetta with excellent weight distribution and lower centre of gravity, with these handling advantages widely acknowledged. Overall, it was a sophisticated and progressive set-up and one that delivered outstanding results when the Alfetta went into competition. During its life, it won events and championships across the globe both on track and in rally guise. They continue to successfully compete to this today in classic race events. When launched the Alfetta GT was powered by the 1.8 litre version of the Alfa DOHC four (taken from the previous 105 series cars). In 1976 this was discontinued in favour of 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre options. Over the subsequent years a number of updates were made to both engines and the appearance of the cars. In late 1980 Alfa Romeo coupled the cars excellent handling with its legendary V6 ‘Busso’ engine and the GTV 6 2.5 was born. The bonnet received a bulge to clear the top of the intake and became a defining feature. With Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection replacing carbs, the V6 was easier to start and retain its state of tune. The V6 received rave reviews and it found its true home in the GTV 6’s striking body where it could demonstrate its ample capabilities underlined with its race successes. The GTV6 cemented its position as an Alfa Romeo legend and its affection within the Alfa Romeo community is enduring. Our car; chassis 3003760. As confirmed by its Certificate of Origin our car was produced in December 1984 and delivered new to NSW in December 1985 in light grey metallic paint with its classic grey pinstripe interior. This is how the car presents today. These cars are rare, and most are tired and have lacked attention. By contrast, the most recent owner has lavished much attention and investment to make this car an excellent example and well sorted driving car. After purchase he had the car stripped to bare metal for paint. It was found to be in remarkably good condition with only new metal required in the front lower guards and one small area to the boot lid. The paint presents really well, and we think the original silver suits this car perfectly. The original plastic bumpers have also been painted in a darker metallic grey and whilst not original do enhance the overall presentation of the car providing a feeling of quality. As with many GTV6 cars, it has had an engine upgrade and now runs with a 3.0L motor from an Alfa Romeo 164. We believe this was done around 14 years ago and correspondence confirms it was done by a known specialist. Under current ownership and as part of the restoration mechanical work has been thorough and extensive including renovation or replacement of all key ancillary parts such as timing belt, leads, water pump, alternator, hoses and so on. A recent compression test shows excellent results. Other items attended to included (but not limited to) new brake pads and rotors, wheel bearings, new bushes, reconditioned steering rack, wheel bearings and master cylinders, all of which add up to make the car an excellent driving example. The original interior was in excellent presentation; however, the dash was restored, and an original unused steering wheel sourced at great cost. The front seats show some signs of fading, but this is being picky. They are incredibly comfortable to sit in, and the ‘net’ head rests are a particularly appealing feature. The compressor for the air-conditioning was removed when the new engine was installed however this could be put back in if required. The sunroof works as it should and the original headlining is in very good order. Overall, the interior is a lovely place to be. The instruments are fresh without any hint of age and all the electrical items work as it should. Even the clock keeps perfect time! The engine bay and ‘Busso V6’ is a visual treat with some detailing being done including hydro blasting the plenum chamber and cam covers. The wheels have been refurbished and present as new with fresh rubber, this includes the spare wheel too. The boot is as expected is excellent and the boot floor and wheel well are excellent. The underside of the car is clean and in fine order. Turn the key and the car starts with a familiar Alfa Romeo growl. Blip the throttle and the V6 provides its familiar appealing tone. Out on the open road this car is exceptional. The engine with its increase in capacity to 3.0 litres provides a useful lift in torque and power. This really does translate when you experience this car. Not only does it pull well below 3,000 rpm but after about 4,000 the car really does come alive and the tone of the V6 really is magical. It just pulls and pulls with a spine-tingling soundtrack. Ordinarily the gearboxes on GTV’s can be a little vague, however with this example it is precise and easy to work very quickly through the gears in complete confidence. Likewise, the brakes and steering are incredibly good, inspiring confidence when you want to push on. And in this car, you will want to do exactly that. It’s a marvel to drive and will not fail to put a smile on your dial. Accompanying the car is a thick folder of invoices and work done totalling over $35,000. We are informed that were many more invoices and value for time spent were simply not kept. It is registered in NSW on club plates and was recently driven by a known specialist mechanic and given a clean bill of health. It is now ready to be enjoyed by its next owner. This is one well sorted car and given the recent investment made represents good buying. 1984 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV6 Cool Classic Club If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright First seen in 1972, Giorgetto Giugiaro’s striking Alfetta fastback wedge design directly resulted from the opposing design requirements of delivering a car capable of carrying four people with luggage, modern looks and dynamic sports handling. • 1962-jaguar-e-type-38

The Series 1 3.8 Fixed-Head Coupé is among the most coveted of all Jaguar E-types, and this superbly restored example benefits from some subtle upgrades to make it even more usable and enjoyable. Chassis number 860303 was built on 19 March 1962, and dispatched on 27 April to Jaguar Distributors in Leeds. It was then sold new to a Dr LE Mitchell by Newton of Huddersfield, which was owned by a family that included two rally-driving daughters who were known as the ‘Mad Newton Sisters’. One of them became a highly successful works driver for the likes of Ford and BMC under her married name of Anne Hall. The registration number 692 KGE was issued in Glasgow, and the E-type was mentioned in the September 1979 issue of Jaguar Driver magazine. At that time, it was owned by David Walker of Crossgates in Fife, and a note said: ‘Body has been assembled, including a brand-new bonnet, engine rebuilt by Sandy Barnett and hopefully going to be on the road next year.’ By 2005, the E-type had been repainted Golden Sand with a Tan interior. It was subsequently restored in Sweden by an owner who was based just north of Stockholm, and the car returned to the road there in 2019. In 2020, it was acquired by a UK-based enthusiast who sent it straight to CKL Developments for assessment. It was decided that the panel fit needed improving in certain areas, and the cylinder head was rebuilt with new tappets, valves and guides. The differential was also overhauled with a new crownwheel and pinion, plus new bearings and seals throughout. Since 2022, further work has been carried out by Southern Classics, including a rebuild of the Getrag five-speed gearbox and the fitment of a new clutch plate and release bearing. The radiator has also been recored and an adjustable front torsion bar reaction plate has been fitted. A retro-look DAB stereo, complete with Bluetooth and hands-free functionality, has been subtly incorporate into the centre console, and there is also a discreet USB charging port. Presented in its original colours of Opalescent Gunmetal with Grey interior, this beautiful Jaguar E-type is offered for sale complete with its original four-speed gearbox, plus a Heritage Certificate and a USB stick full of restoration photographs. 1962 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 The Classic Motor Hub If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1981 Porsche 911 SC Targa

This 1981 Porsche 911 SC Targa is finished in Black over Black and is a great example for enthusiasts who want to get behind the wheel of a classic 911 at a more reasonable price point. Sold new at Sun West Inc. of St. Petersburg, Florida, the car has spent time in Florida, Texas, Canada and most recently, California, where it has been since 2017. Although the car shows 59,761 miles, it bears noting that the true mileage of the car is unknown. The classic “Impact-Bumper” 911 shape is on full display with this car, but when you approach the vehicle, you realize that it is by no means a show car. Originally finished in Colorado Beige and repainted black in the car's past, the finish was not applied to the highest standard, exhibiting some cracking, crazing, and marks around the car. The Targa roll hoop, typically finished in black anodized stainless steel, is wrapped with a textured carbon fiber look material, and the car has a few sizable dents. For a complete rundown of this 911 Targa’s condition, please refer to the inspection report below. Issimi’s comprehensive inspections offer an in-depth look at the car you want, without needing a 3rd-party pre-purchase inspection. On the interior, black leather covers the seats, both front and rear, as well as the lower door cards. The interior layout of a 911 from this vintage is not all that different from the classic 911s of the 1960s and 1970s, which is something that they were critiqued for at the time but is now is applauded for its simplicity. Although the layout is simple, this car benefits from numerous convenience features like power windows, air conditioning and dealer-installed cruise control. Also, an upgraded Kenwood head unit has been installed, allowing radio and CD compatibility. Like on the exterior, there is some wear noted on the inside of this 911- namely a tear in the driver’s seat and dry leather. Once again, for a full view of what this car needs, please look at the Inspection Report. Sitting behind the passengers is a 3.0-liter air cooled flat-6 that is rated from the factory at 172 horsepower and 189 lb-ft of torque. Records show some work completed by well-known Southern California engine builder Mirage International Inc. and a head rebuild by Moonlight Machine- all of which took place in 2017. This engine is connected to a “915” 5-speed manual transaxle, a gearbox known for retaining the classic 911 feel and tends to be an enthusiast choice when it comes to these G-Body 911s. The original tie rods have been swapped out for units from a 930 Turbo, and the catalytic converter has been replaced with a test pipe- meaning that in this configuration, the car cannot be registered in California. This car is perfect for somebody who wants a 911 Targa that they can drive and enjoy while working on some projects here and there to take this car to the next level. In its desirable black/black color combination, with Fuchs wheels and solid running gear, this car is the perfect jumping-off point- or if looks don’t bother you- a perfect car to use every day without worrying about damaging a showpiece. 1981 Porsche 911 SC Targa ISSIMI, Inc If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE

Born in 1952, the 250 Series marks Ferrari's first series production cars, with the unmistakable power of the famed Colombo V12 engine. Built on the renowned longer sports car chassis, the 250 GTE combined luxury and performance as only Ferrari can. With its streamlined body, premium interior and class, it captured the hearts of men and women in the 1960s. With only 955 original units produced, the Ferrari 250 GTE is a specimen that flaunts itself like a female peacock with pheromones coursing through its body. The Ferrari 250 GTE can be admired in our Clubhouse. It is simply a pleasure to see this Ferrari 250 GTE Series II in real life. With its long hood and the seductive Azzuro (16240) exterior color and beige leather interior, it brings a Mediterranean feeling. Not to forget, this copy consists of completely matching numbers and colors! Originally gracing the roads of California, this icon has traveled through time, from the bustling streets of the US to the picturesque landscapes of Switzerland, before finding its place in the heart of the Netherlands. 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE Cool Classic Club If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1964 Porsche 356C Outlaw

In its original colors, Irish Green with Brown leather 1720cc, SC camshaft, Solex carburetors, 12 volt upgrade 6 x 15-inch steel wheels with 195/65 R15 Pirelli P6000 tires Lowered suspension, Koni shocks The final iteration of the 356 Previously restored by well-known marque expert, Gary Kempton 1964 marked the release of the final iteration of the 356 with the deliverance of the 356C. This update in the 356 now sported disk brakes all around, as well as optional SC specifications. The 356C was manufactured starting in July 1963 and ending in September 1965. By the time the 356C debuted in 1963, the 356 had undergone numerous updates and enhancements over the years and had nearly done away with what remained of its humble Volkswagen beginnings. The 356C is unquestionably the best and most complete design to date. This 356C belonged to a dedicated 356 enthusiast who had owned the vehicle for nearly 55 years. He was the 3rd owner, who had just begun his journey as a devoted PCA member after purchasing the car in March 1967 for $2,750. Over his initial decade of ownership, the vehicle was a daily driver until he decided to garage the car for almost 20 years before giving it the restoration it deserved. In 1999, this 356C began the process of a ground-up restoration spanning over three years by the late noted restorer, Gary Kempton. During this intricate restoration, a number of areas were addressed, including but not limited to bodywork, paint, chrome, interior, engine, transmission, suspension, and a 6v to 12v conversion. Midway through the process, it was decided that this 356C would receive notable upgrades, specifically a 1720cc big bore kit, SC camshafts, Solex carburetors, Koni shocks, 6-inch wheels wrapped in 195/65 R15 Pirelli P6000 tires, bespoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a beautiful-sounding Leistritz muffler. After receiving his vehicle in 2002, he enjoyed this 356C for almost two decades before selling it to its most recent owner in 2021. Upon arrival at Canepa, every collector car for sale is put through an extensive and diligent process called the “Canepa Difference.” This includes a major and comprehensive mechanical inspection where all systems are checked, serviced, and restored as needed. They also receive an award-winning concours-level detailing, including a thorough cleaning of each and every surface. Extensive road testing and final adjustments were made to the 356C to constitute an engaging driving experience. What followed was a concours level detail (over 100 hours), including hand cleaning every area of the engine, transmission, chassis, engine bay, underbody etc., complete with careful detailing of every corner of the front trunk, interior, and exterior finishes and trim. This is your opportunity to own an example of the final iteration of the 356, updated in subtle outlaw improvements to create a fun driving excitement every day. 1964 Porsche 356C Outlaw Canepa If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer.
