- 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort
If you were an impressionable teenager in the 1980s, you had one of three supercars on your wall: the Lamborghini Countach, the Ferrari F40 or the Porsche 959. Gamechanger is an apt way to describe the latter – a Teutonic technological tour de force born of Porsche’s desire to go racing in the then-burgeoning Group B category. Ground-breaking innovations including variable torque bias, sequential turbochargers, ABS brakes, adjustable ride height and onboard tyre pressure monitors helped Porsche to redefine what the word versatile meant in the world of performance motoring. The 959 was a car which produced north of 450HP, nudged 200mph and delivered its mind-bending performance in a manner which made you feel like you were spinning the earth backwards. Even by the standards of today’s supercars, a spirited drive in a 959 alters your perception of speed. Yet its miraculous Jekyll and Hyde character meant unlike Porsche’s contemporaries, this was as comfortable and genuinely refined as a Mercedes-Benz saloon. The 959 is the genuine everyday supercar which pre-dated the cliché. Chassis no. 900086 The Porsche 959 Komfort presented here distinguishes itself as an original unrestored accident-free example that’s enjoyed just two owners and covered a mere 17,500 (documented) kilometres from new. Chassis number 900096 was the only 959 Komfort of the 292 produced delivered new to Austria. Well, technically that’s incorrect, since the original owner paid to collect the car directly from the Porsche factory in October of 1987. It was finished in Polar Silver Metallic over a Dark Grey leather interior and specified with the optional Sport seats, air-conditioning and Blaupunkt radio. The Austrian kept the 959 until 2012, when it was acquired by a German enthusiast building a remarkable collection of high-quality Porsche’s spanning the marque’s entire history. “This is a wonderful and authentic example of Stuttgart’s seminal supercar, worthy of the greatest Porsche collections – just like that it’s resided in for the last 14 years.” As the original service booklet and wealth of accompanying invoices attest, this 959 has always been fastidiously cared for and maintained regardless of cost. In the year from May of 2017 to March of 2018 alone, invoices from Porsche Centre Stuttgart were issued totalling over 90,000 euros. Retaining its original chassis, engine and gearbox, chassis number 900096 presents in exceptional mechanical and cosmetic condition. It’s accompanied by its factory user manuals, warranty and service books, tool roll, tyre compressor and jack sets, and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. This is a wonderful and authentic example of Stuttgart’s seminal supercar, worthy of the greatest Porsche collections – just like that it’s resided in for the last 14 years. 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort Girardo & Co. - 1963-jaguar-xke-eagle-engineered-lightweight-conversion-48
When Jaguar unveiled the XKE at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, everything changed in the world of sports cars. Breathtaking design, unrivaled performance, and racing lineage made the XKE an immediate sensation. Beautiful and popular, the XKE proved even more spectacular, setting records, and posting victories all over the world. In the same tradition that Jaguar built the original lightweight race cars, recognized experts in period correct XKE craftsmanship and performance enhancements, together with the commissioning owner, spared no expense creating this superb tribute to Jaguars’ legendary XKE Lightweight Coupe. This car was originally commissioned and built to an incredibly high specification for world renowned collector, Paul Michaels, of Hexagon fame. Developed by recognized experts in period correct XKE craftsmanship and performance enhancements, together with the commissioning owner, the team spared no expense creating this superb tribute to Jaguars’ legendary XKE Lightweight Coupe. Beginning with a sound road car, this Series 1 coupe was comprehensively disassembled and reconfigured to full Lightweight standards including extensive modifications to the engine, body, suspension, electronic systems, cooling system, brakes, and interior. The hand-crafted car was completed in the early 2000s to impeccable standards by top fabrication specialists, following closely to factory specifications while using authentic parts. Following final modification, enhancements, and restoration works by Eagle for performance and safety resulted in this beautifully constructed Eagle-Engineered Lightweight Conversion. As might be expected, the construction history surrounding the build is both technically impressive and artfully engaging. Beginning with the body, the structural steel core was retained while a set of custom RS hand-formed alloy body panels (alloy hood, doors, rear arches, and trunk lid) were fitted to the steel structure. A set of lightweight peg-drive Dunlop-type magnesium wheels were fitted, and the engine was comprehensively built by Rob Beere, upgraded to 4.7 Liter specifications. Engine improvements included a big valve cylinder head with Sport cams, Sport lightened and balanced engine components, gas flowed head with matched ports, a gated anti-surge pump, and big-bore tubular exhaust manifolds. The engine was mounted using specially fabricated Sport mounts, a harmonic crankshaft damper, electronic ignition with performance plug leads, and a modern performance electric fuel pump. Cooling was improved using a modern cooling fan, lightweight alloy radiator, brass water tank, and Kevlar reinforced cooling hoses. The 4.7 Liter engine was dyno-tuned returning 307 hp at the rear wheels with more than 300 ft/pounds of torque from 3,200 to 5,200 rpm. An all synchro 5-speed Getrag gearbox was installed along with a 3.07:1 rear end. Brakes and suspension were upgraded as well with a high-powered stainless-steel shielded brake booster, AP front alloy brake calipers with 315mm ventilated rotors with adjustable brake bias. GT torsion bars and springs, GT sway bars and bushings, polyurethane radius arm and arb bushings, Eagle Sport radius arm conversion, and billet aluminum steering rack mounts were also installed. Additional features included Spax adjustable shocks, high output charging system with 75-amp alternator, a lightweight geared starter motor, and halogen headlights. The resultant performance enhancements and build exceeded $100,000.00 at the time of construction. Upon completion, Paul Michaels enjoyed the car, successfully participating in a variety of European tours, covering some 4,687 kms (2,912 miles). Around this time, Mr. Michaels was fortunate to purchase 86 PJ, an exceptional original and genuine factory lightweight, one of just twelve originally built. Michaels then commissioned Eagle, world renowned E-type experts, to carry out a comprehensive sympathetic restoration to the original lightweight and further engaged Eagle to sell this Lightweight Coupe. Eagle, most well known for their ‘Eagle E-Types’, including their own Lightweight inspired ‘Special Editions’, also offer carefully selected previously restored E-types, which can be crafted with unique and exclusive access to a range of Eagle engineering features as well as full Eagle commissions. As is the case with this offering, these cars, such as the example offered here, are uniquely branded as the "Eagle Engineered E-type”. With Michaels’ Eagle presented on exclusive offer, Eagle soon found a new owner in California. The new owner then engaged Eagle to apply their bespoke rear suspension ‘Sport specification’ upgrades to the car and to rebuild the suspension unit at the same time. Concurrent with other upgrades already fitted, the outcome mirrored the specifications of an "Eagle GT", this work was completed on 25 Nov 2004 and numbered as “Eagle-Engineered E-Type”, assigned number 41, and an Eagle GT badge was added to the center console. At this time, a dozen or so of the full, totally in house restored Eagle E-types had been completed and delivered. The Eagle Engineered option was introduced due to lead times for a completed commission running into several years. The car was brought to California, titled, and registered as a 1963 Jaguar for the new owner, who enjoyed the car for two years, driving it frequently. An avid vintage performance car enthusiast, the northern California owner engaged professional Jaguar performance specialists to service and upgrade the car as needed including regular fluids and interval services, including fluid exchanges, brake fluid flush, and seal replacement, a new electronic ignition kit, SU carburetor tuning, ammeter repair, water pump rebuild, various gaskets replaced, cooling system serviced, and various electrical wiring improved. In 2006 The car was then sold through Fantasy Junction to the third post-construction owner, who retained it for 14 years, enjoying it sparingly. In 2022, Fantasy Junction offered the car for sale again. At that time, 4,100 miles were indicated. The second post-build owner then repurchased the car making him both the second and fourth owner of record since the build. Under his ownership in November 2022 with 4,550 miles indicated, experts at American Classics and Performance, Cotati, CA performed approximately $29,000.00 worth of detailed services. Beginning the process, the top end of the engine was disassembled, and the head removed for a professional valve job, during reassembly the cam gears and upper chain tensioner were reinstalled with adjustments made, and the oil and filter changed. A new set of spark plugs was installed, and the engine was cleaned and prepped along with various items refinished as needed before complete reassembly. Additional work included replacing all fuel hoses, carburetor service including new floats, matched needles, tuning and synchronizing the carburetors, installing air/fuel meter, new screens for the velocity stacks, a new brake light switch, new battery, and new cooling hoses. The car also received a new fuel tank with new fuel hoses, the clutch slave and master cylinder were rebuilt, a new set of Avon tires (invoiced at separate cost) were balanced and mounted, and all four wheels were powder coated for increased durability. In late 2023 Fantasy Junction had the opportunity to place this example for a third consecutive time, this time with a seasoned enthusiast on the East Coast. Having owned and vigorously exercised both his original Ford GT40 on the track, and Ferrari 250 SWB on the road, the current and consigning owner recognized just how well this Eagle-Engineered example walked the line between a performance street car and visceral race car. Using it both in organized rally events as well as casual touring, updates and further refinements under his ownership continued with regular fluids changes, the sourcing of stock rear radius arms for a more plush long distance driving stance (included with the sale), polishing of the DOHC valve covers, and the fitment of Crow four point competition harness for both the driver and the passenger. In total, 6,250 miles have been added to the odometer since the 2004 completion on behalf of Mr. Michaels. Today the car presents as a spectacular example combining authentic aspects in tribute to the original Lightweight themes with impressive contemporary upgrades and excellent finishes throughout. The paint was done to a very high standard, with excellent gloss and consistent coverage, now showing just minor evidence of mellowing and enjoyable use. Panel fit and gaps are excellent in all aspects of body construction including the muscular riveted alloy rear fenders, smooth alloy nose, and alloy doors. With the front and rear bumpers removed, the body design is even more elegant and purposeful as a competition statement. The lighting, lenses, and windshield are in excellent condition including the leather bonnet latches, one of many handsome vintage touches. The recently refinished magnesium wheels and new Avon tires add to the authentic stance and presence. The exposed rivet construction, outside alloy filler cap, and smoothed front/rear finishes all contribute to the competition presence of this Eagle-Engineered Lightweight Conversion. The interior of the car is as carefully thought out and as nicely detailed as the exterior. Opening the lightweight aluminum doors, the competition inspired interior is comfortable, not sparse, conveying the perfect balance of racing and road-going excellence. The seats are wrapped in supple green leather accompanied by 5-point seat harnesses, a leather wrapped central tunnel, black low-pile carpeting, and a stock XKE dashboard trimmed with green and black accents completes the interior finishes. Modest use is evident in the interior mostly to the driver’s side seat bolster which shows some wear from entry and exit. The wood steering wheel is slightly larger in diameter to allow improved rigidity under more spirited driving. The 5-speed Getrag gearbox is topped with an alloy shift knob and traditionally fitted with a matching green leather boot. A roll bar is installed, green headliner affixed to the inner roof panel and rear hatch, a modern fire system is in place, and a matching Dunlop type spare tire is located under the rear hatch panel. The interior exhibits a nice blend of vintage competition Jaguars, with just enough comfort to enjoy driving without the harshness of typical competition cars. Lifting the lightweight aluminum hood, the engine and engine bay reveals the 4.7 Liter engine with details prepared in homage to the original. Though recently freshened with a valve job and other engine refinements, the engine retains a unified patina consistent with competition cars including heat toned header exhaust and buff aluminum finishes. Here too upgraded features have been thoughtfully installed for reliable use. Conceived and built with combined road and rally/touring use in mind, the engine systems are all easily accessed and modern upgrades including electronic ignition, electric fuel pump, modern alternator, and cooling enhancements (alloy radiator and electric fan) have proven to be appropriately specified. Further features include recently tuned triple SU carburetors, traditional Lucas Engineering branded features, new fuel and cooling hoses, and a new battery. The underside of the car is very clean, nicely sorted, and appropriately finished reflective of the miles and use reported since the build was completed. The car starts and drives very well. The 4.7 Liter engine is very strong with very quick throttle response and yet still usable for general driving, tours, or light duty track days. The 5-speed gearbox is a full synchro Getrag unit which operates smoothly and allows for 80+ mph in overdrive 5th gear while the straight-six calms hums at only 2400 rpm. The brakes and steering are very well dialed in and the 3.07:1 rear end is suitable for highway use. In all, the driving experience is both invigorating and delightful, feeling very much like a competition car, in looks and heritage, but delivering a satisfying road manner that a capable driver can enjoy with confidence. The car is accompanied by numerous copies of build documentation, copies of invoices for recent services, Eagle-Engineering specifications sheets, dyno sheet, magazine articles, a series of photographs showing the build including body work and engine build, a car cover, a reprinted owner's manual, and a set of tools in a tool roll. For anyone seeking an exciting competition inspired car with vintage presence, this Jaguar XKE Eagle-Engineered Lightweight Conversion offers a unique design coupled with wonderful driving manners and superb performance that is sure to please any Jaguar performance enthusiast. 1963 Jaguar XKE Eagle-Engineered Lightweight Conversion 4.7 Fantasy Junction If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1982 Lotus Esprit S3
Very well-presented, fully restored early-S3 Esprit in Lotus’ iconic JPS colours, reportedly painted by the factory in-period. The Esprit S3 was officially unveiled at the British International Motor Show at the NEC Birmingham in October 1981 and, like its predecessors, it was designed by the legendary automotive engineer Giorgetto Giugiaro as an early example of his polygonal 'folded paper' designs. The Esprit S3 gained popularity for its distinctive wedge-shaped body and advanced engineering, captivating enthusiasts worldwide. As an evolution of its predecessors, the Esprit S3 solidified Lotus' position as a pioneer in the realm of lightweight, high-performance sports cars. Despite the styling remaining relatively similar to the previous generation S2 Esprit, the S3 saw a host of upgrades and benefits. Mechanically, it featured a more powerful (Type 912) 2.2-litre inline four-cylinder engine offering 160bhp mated to a 5-speed gearbox and, weighing just 1,000kg, the performance was spritely, with 0-60mph taking just 6.7 seconds. Cosmetically the S3 received redesigned front and rear bumpers, side-skirts and front spoiler, with the interior revised to provide more headroom and additional space in the footwells. This handsome early S3 was purchased by our vendor in August 2021 on 91,000 miles, and came with a quintessentially 'Lotus' story on how it was painted in JPS colours. Having managed to trace back the car's lineage, our vendor found himself speaking with the son of the original owner of the car, who told the story of how his father took delivery of XRE 383X, a brand-new Jupiter Red S3. Within six months of ownership, he became so fed up with the car breaking down that it was sent back to Lotus to fully disassemble and re-assemble to iron out any issues, and reportedly, as a goodwill gesture, the factory also resprayed it in the JPS colours the car wears today at the owner’s request. However, upon taking delivery of their freshly rebuilt and repainted car, it continued to break down in the following three months to the extent that the AA recovered the car back to Lotus who provided a full refund. Shortly after our vendors purchase, a restoration was undertaken to return the car to its former glory having been believed to be lost/stored in a garage for 18-years. The restoration process was extensive with a full respray including the engine bay, door shuts and wheels by AD Panelcraft in Milton Keynes. The interior was stripped, with the leather either retrimmed or restored, and a new carpet set in the correct Blenheim Champagne colour was added, as well as a new gear knob and headlining. The gauges were taken out and restored in addition to a new heater surround and matrix due to corrosion spots. Mechanically, the car is in lovely condition with the main components having been addressed. A new clutch and cambelt were installed ensuring improved performance and reliability. The engine received a thorough service and freshen-up, bringing it back to its optimal condition including a new SU fuel pump. The car sits on AVO front and rear adjustable dampers with standard front callipers and a VW rear calliper conversion with new cables by PNM Motorsport as the handbrake mechanism wasn’t working. Bushes and ball joints have been replaced as required to ensure the whole driving experience is as flawless as its overall appearance. Presented to market in the wonderfully iconic JPS black and gold colours, complemented by the refreshed champagne leather interior and very attractively-guided, this Esprit is surely a worthy addition to any collection or perhaps just drive and enjoy it. 1982 Lotus Esprit S3 Iconic Auctioneers Ltd If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1970-porsche-914-6
The Porsche 914-6, launched in 1970, was a bold departure from Porsche tradition. It was a mid-engine sports car developed in collaboration with Volkswagen. While the base 914 models had less power, this 914-6 Roadster packed a 2.7RS flat-six engine from the 911, turning this lightweight chassis into a true performance machine! With it's sharp handling and low center of gravity, it became a formidable competitor in motorsport. This example is signed by Jürgen Barth, a racing driver and Porsche engineer who helped bring glory to many overlooked models. Barth had a deep technical understanding of Porsche machinery and played a key role in developing and driving various competition cars. He drove a 914-6 GT in endurance racing.Though the 914-6 was produced in limited numbers and often underestimated, drivers like Barth helped create its legacy as a true driver's car and a worthy place in Porsche history. - 1951-abarth-simca-8-sport-cabriolet-by-stabilimenti-farina
Students of the coachbuilt automobile know that a design, if it was a good one, was frequently adapted by an enterprising carrozzeria to fit a range of chassis. So it was with this post-war cabriolet style by Stabilimenti Farina. With a very pretty, very modern, “envelope” body expertly rendered in a mix of steel and aluminum, the basic impression was quite like that of the award-winning Cisitalia 202—created, of course, by Giovanni Carlo Farina’s brother Battista, founder of Pininfarina. Underpinnings from Siata to Ferrari served as blank canvases for versions of this Stabilimenti Farina offering, but none are more interesting than the Abarth-Simca 8 Sport Cabriolet offered here. A unique creation in many respects, this 8 Sport Cabriolet was made specifically for Roger Barlow. A colorful, California-based sportsman, author, and racer, Barlow was the proprietor of Hollywood’s International Motors sports car dealership, which counted Bing Crosby and Clark Gable among its clientele. He was also a great champion of France’s Simca brand in the United States and abroad, but while Barlow’s three race-prepped “little blue Simcas” challenged all comers on the circuit—often successfully—he needed something a little more comfortable for off-track transportation. A Simca 8 (effectively a French-built Fiat 1100) chassis served as the starting point, though the humble 1,221-cubic-centimeter engine would hardly be suitable for a racing driver…and an American one at that. Legendary Italian tuning firm Abarth supplied a modified head and an exhaust, but it was a S.Co.T (Supercharger Company of Turin) blower, paired with a substantial Weber carburetor, that really upped the ante, increasing output to an estimated 90-100 horsepower. Stabilimenti Farina’s bodywork was equally unique, incorporating special aluminum bumpers, a trio of Cisitalia-esque vents on each fender, and a functional hood scoop like that on the Farina-bodied Ferrari 166 Inter Cabriolet. “Extra Lusso” badging emphasized this car’s nature as a comfortable, if spirited, luxury tourer, rather than a bare-bones racer. Barlow would retain his coachbuilt cabriolet until his death in 1990, after which it was stored by his daughter in Connecticut. Restored in the mid-2010s with a two-tone finish over a red interior, the car was acquired by Sam and Emily Mann in 2015, and soon benefitted from a repaint in its present dark blue. Mr. Mann notes that this cabriolet is “fast and pleasant to drive,” with four-wheel hydraulic brakes and independent front suspension affording a degree of confidence on spirited jaunts. With French underpinnings courtesy of Simca, and delightful bodywork and a punchy little engine via Italy’s Stabilimenti Farina and Abarth, this truly is a fascinating car built for a fascinating character. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright Students of the coachbuilt automobile know that a design, if it was a good one, was frequently adapted by an enterprising carrozzeria to fit a range of chassis. - 1993 Honda NSX-R
Recently sourced from Japan, The Cultivated Collector's 1993 Honda NSX-R is a prime example of the breed. Finished in the rare shade of Formula Red, chassis 0153 presents in an exceptionally well preserved state today, showing just over 65k KM from new and retains protective plastic covering the door sills. Accompanying the sale of 0153 will be Japanese service records, manual, books and two keys. With recent servicing, 0153 is at the top of its game - eagerly awaiting to devour open stretches of highway or winding country back roads. In the mid-eighties Honda engineers were experimenting with various engine and chassis layouts in an effort to explore viability for future products. One such experiment saw the Honda engineers take a Honda City, cut it in half, and install the engine behind the driver's seat. Much to the delight of the engineers, after an extensive number of thrilling laps around the parking lot, this unsuspecting test mule led to inspiring the Honda board to decide that they would create a pure sports car, and thus the beginning of the NSX was born. Honda would consort with automotive design legends Pininfarina to create a concept car called the Honda Pininfarina Experimental, referred to as HP-X, showcasing Honda’s foray into the mid-engine sports car world. Management at Honda provided lofty goals for the engineering team, simply requesting that this new sports car would need to be as fast as anything from their German and Italian competitors, while offering Honda reliability and a highly competitive price. With this direction, work began on evolving the HP-X concept car into a working prototype that would be referred to as NS-X, standing for “New Sportscar Experimental”, with an intention to showcase numerous automotive technologies that Honda derived from its wealth of knowledge in the Formula 1 world. The backbone of success for the NSX would lie in its all-aluminum semi-monocoque, a first for a production car, incorporating a revolutionary extruded aluminum alloy frame and suspension components saving a significant 441lbs over traditional steel construction. Nestled in the middle of the car, just behind the driver and passenger seats, would be the heart of the NSX - Honda’s brand new C30A engine, a 3.0 liter V6 debuting their brand-new proprietary VTEC variable valve timing system. The chassis and powertrain isn’t where the motorsport connection stopped. Honda further leaned on their robust motorsports division to aid in developing the NSX into a truly capable track weapon, leveraging the successful hands of 3x Formula 1 World Drivers Champion Ayrton Senna and highly respected Formula 1 driver Satoru Nakajima, with both working tirelessly to fine tune chassis stiffness and suspension characteristics through seemingly endless test sessions at the Suzuka Circuit and the Nurburgring. The end product of this painstakingly thorough test and tuning regime was a chassis stiffness increase of over 50%, while retaining a near minimal impact to overall weight and the cars handling capabilities. Released to the public in 1991, the NSX was an immediate sensation with enthusiasts and journalists alike. Car & Driver, after extensive testing, noted “the low, forward, cockpit is exhilarating… like riding in the head of an arrow” and of the car’s responsiveness stated, “it's so precise in its responses, as if it were hard-wired into my cerebellum." Despite the NSX being well received, Honda engineers had to make compromises to meet a healthy balance between daily driveability and raw performance. It was decided that for those customers seeking a truly no-bars-hold racing experience, Honda unleashed to the world in late 1992 the revered NSX Type-R. Honda engineers began the NSX Type-R development by putting the already svelte NSX on an extremely aggressive diet to aid in weight savings. Sound deadening, the audio system, spare tire, air conditioning system and traction control, along with some of the electrical equipment, were completely removed, while the heavy leather electric seats were replaced with fixed back carbon-kevlar racing seats from Recaro designed specifically for Honda. To reduce unsprung weight, Honda chose to replace the standard forged alloy wheels with lightweight forged aluminum wheels from Enkei. This extreme approach to weight savings saw the NSX Type-R weighing in at an astonishing 265lbs lighter than its standard NSX sibling, for a total weight of 2,710lbs. Changes didn’t merely stop with weight, however. Honda’s suspension engineers focused on fine tuning the suspension setup to prevent sudden oversteer during high speed cornering, which was extremely rare during normal driving conditions but was more prevalent on track. To remedy this, engineers added one aluminum bracket under the front battery tray, and added one bracket in front of the front radiator to increase chassis rigidity. The entire suspension system was discarded and replaced with a more track oriented unit, featuring a stiffer front sway bar, suspension bushings, coil springs and dampers. Additional changes to the car would see the final drive ratio revised to aid in quicker gear changes, and installation of a higher locking limited slip differential. Meanwhile, the C30A engine would receive additional motorsport love with a blueprinted and balanced crankshaft assembly, utilizing techniques carried over from Honda’s racing car engine build process. The reengineering of the NSX into the NSX Type-R resulted in a highly capable track oriented weapon that would be able to keep up with the best of the best from traditional super car marques of the day - all while being financially accessible, and carrying Honda’s legendary reliability characteristics, making for an incredibly alluring package. From 1992 through 1995, Honda would only produce 483 NSX Type-R variants, all of which were sold exclusively to the Japanese domestic market, making the NSX Type-R one of the most sought after and desirable Honda’s to date. 1993 Honda NSX-R The Cultivated Collector LLC If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Tubolare Zagato
Zagato will always be regarded as one of the great coachbuilders and arguably the strongest partnership throughout its history has been with Alfa Romeo. From building bodies on all-conquering 8Cs to producing radical designs such as the RZ and SZ, the two companies have garnered a loyal following amongst true car enthusiasts. One of the partnership’s most successful models was the Tubolare Zagato, otherwise known as the TZ. The TZ project was born out of the introduction of the 105-series 1,570 cc Giulia. Following on from the marque’s success with the Giulietta SZ, the TZ used an entirely different chassis design in the form of a lightweight spaceframe. The alloy body was a development of the ideas behind the SZ Coda Tronca, utilising a low-drag nose, small frontal area, and a Kamm tail. The running gear was equally advanced, with independent suspension and disc brakes at all corners, a five-speed gearbox, and a limited-slip differential. The design was a success; during 1964 and 1965, the TZ achieved World Sportscar Championship class victories in all corners of the continent, scoring high profile wins on the Tour de France and Targa Florio, and dominating the field at Le Mans, Sebring, Montlhéry, the Nürburgring, Spa, Mugello, Enna, and Bridgehampton. First mention of this TZ, chassis “750087”, is in an Autodelta invoice to Alfa Romeo on 2 April 1965. The car left the Alfa Romeo production line on 21 July 1965 before being delivered on 8 September 1965 to Alfa Romeo Lugano. According to the Alfa Romeo Zagato Register, it was traded through well-known Alfa racer Karl Foitek to Peter Schetty, another racer who kept it until late 1966. Its next owner was Uli Maurer, who in turn sold this TZ to James Bernard Fortmann on 26 April 1968. Fortmann campaigned the car with Squadra Piloti Bardahl, giving chassis “750087” its competition debut at the 1968 Nürburgring 1000 kms. Sharing with Urs-Peter Dietrich, they finished 36th overall and 5th in the prototype 1.6L class. This TZ was then entered for the Montseny Hillclimb on 2 June 1968 before appearing six days later, this time in the hands of Jean-Claude Ehinger, for the Hockenheim round of the ACS Swiss Championship. Its final race was the Gran Pemio de Mugello, a 66.8-kilometre circuit made up of public roads around Tuscany. Fortmann lent the car to Urs-Peter Dietrich and Eric Chapuis, but damage to the right rear in practice forced its retirement. In October 1968, Fortmann sold this TZ to Ehinger, who kept it for a year before a fire under the bonnet put the car out of action. The TZ was sold to Garage Spycher of Agno, which replaced the engine and kept the car until 1983, when it passed to Ernst Hugentobler. Hugentobler would enjoy this TZ for 17 years before it returned to the previous Dutch owner. During this second, 16-year stint of ownership, the incorrect-type engine was changed for an original TZ engine, Tipo 511, numbered “00034”, from chassis “750066”. It features a tag stating it was tuned by Facetti, and boasts a desirable twin-plug cylinder head. This TZ passed into the current ownership in 2016, and since then has been certified by the respected Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo; its report noted: “the car had never undergone a radical restoration and presents a high degree of conservation and authenticity. The vehicle is compliant with the original configuration, with documented historical continuity.” Wonderful details such as the stop pads on the corners of the bonnet, a leatherette cover on the rear-top shock absorber, and Alfa Romeo rubber straps in the rear of the cabin are signs of real care that this example has benefitted from. Today, this TZ presents as a wonderfully genuine example of one of Alfa Romeo’s most successful racing cars. Despite its unrestored cosmetic appearance, it has been mechanically maintained in the current ownership and enjoyed as a delightful road car. Nevertheless, this TZ is eligible for some of the best historic racing events including the Le Mans Classic, Velocity International, Tour Auto, Modena Cento Ore, and various pre-1966 GT race series. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a very genuine and charming Tubolare Zagato. 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Tubolare Zagato RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright Zagato will always be regarded as one of the great coachbuilders and arguably the strongest partnership throughout its history has been with Alfa Romeo. - 1989 BMW M3 Cecotto Edition
Based on the popular E30 3 Series, the BMW M3 was developed to satisfy Federation Internationale d’Automobile Group A touring car rules that required a total of 5,000 roadgoing equivalents. It was presented to the public at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show and an immediate success, winning nearly every touring car championship the world over in just a matter of years. Its impressive racing exploits translated to feverish sales, prompting BMW to spin off special editions to keep pace with demand. In 1989, BMW released the M3 Cecotto Edition, named after Italian-Venezuelan racing phenom Jonathan Cecotto, who won the 1973 Venezuelan national motorcycle championship at 17 and several others before the age of 20. Among the last of an elite group of racers who competed at the highest levels of both motorcycle and auto racing—including Formula One—his success in touring-car competition behind the wheel of an M3 helped cement BMW’s reputation as a dominant force in racing and performance-car production. The M3 Cecotto Edition featured various subtle enhancements over the original M3, most notable of which was a higher-spec version of BMW’s free-revving S14B23 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder. The upgraded engine produced more than 200 horsepower and would become standard on M3s going forward. For the Cecotto Edition, its valve cover was color-matched to one of three exterior hues unique to the model: Macao Blue, Misano Red, or Nogaro Silver. Further visual distinctions included a larger front splitter, a revised rear wing—both of which were adopted by the subsequent Sport Evolution or “Evolution II” M3—and black 16-inch BBS mesh wheels. Thinner side and rear glass helped reduced weight. As noted on its dash-mounted plaque, the well-documented example offered here is number 363 of 505 produced. Only 480 of the series were designated as Cecotto Editions, with the remaining 25 dedicated to another M3 touring-car driver of the era, Roberto Ravaglia. Number 363 remains beautifully preserved in highly original condition and is undoubtedly one of the best of its type, showing only 34,621 kilometers (21,512 miles) at cataloguing time. It was sold new in October 1989 through Auto Becker Klausmann, the official BMW dealer in Krefeld, Germany to its first owner, Luigi Punziano, proprietor of Pizzaria/Ristorante Luigi in nearby Grefrath. The original sales invoice indicates the M3 was finished in Misano Red over Black leather and was equipped with power windows, a power sunroof, heated front seats, and a Bavaria C Electronic stereo cassette player. Service invoices and numerous stampings with mileage logs in the car’s warranty book indicate routine visits to Auto Becker through May 2014. In November 2015, a dealership in Anzig, Germany sold the M3 to a subsequent owner from Balingen. Following this, records indicate that the M3 was registered in Italy in March of 2021. In 2022, the consignor discovered the car in Padua, Italy, not far from the shop of famed Ferrari competition builder and restorer Christiano Michelotto’s operations. Being friends with Michelotto, the consignor enlisted him to check out the M3. Upon inspection, he reported it to be the best example he had ever seen and promptly assisted the consignor with its purchase, completed in November 2022. Although it was in remarkable condition overall, Michelotto—with the consignor’s blessing—recommissioned the car mechanically and cosmetically to bring it fully up to his obsessive standards. These efforts, carried out by Michelotto Automobili, included replacing the water pump, valve cover gaskets, belts, engine and gearbox mounts, fuel and brake lines, fuel pressure regulator, cooling hoses, damper joints, and exhaust muffler. In addition, the brake calipers and dampers were overhauled, all fluids were replaced, and a battery master switch was installed. Though the paint remained in excellent condition, Michelotto insisted that the bumpers and rocker panels be sanded to remove their subtle orange-peel texture and repainted to a superior smooth finish in factory-correct Misano Red for a perfect presentation. Following this, the car was fully detailed inside and out, including cleaning all mechanical components, polishing the tailpipes, treating the plastic switchgear, and reconditioning the leather. Once fully refurbished, the M3 was wrapped in a thick cocoon of protective plastic and exported from Italy to Colorado in February 2023. Now presenting in superb condition, having been driven sparingly and benefitted from thoroughly documented care its entire life, this stunning and rare M3 Cecotto Edition is offered with an extensive history file and factory books that, together with its outstanding presentation, confirm it to be among the very best examples of its kind. 1989 BMW M3 Cecotto Edition RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer.
