  • 1953 Fiat 8V Coupe by Ghia

    ANATOMY OF A JEWEL A diamond that emerged from a figurative coalmine, the Fiat 8V was a shocking anomaly for a mass-market manufacturer better known for pedestrian models like the diminutive Topolino or the 500. Upon its introduction in 1952, Road & Track magazine described the jewel-like 8V as “the biggest surprise of the year.” It was understandably a shock to the automotive world that, after decades of producing entry-level models, Fiat would suddenly introduce a boutique-production sports car featuring an advanced overhead-valve light alloy V-8 engine, Siata-fabricated chassis, and four-wheel independent suspension. The Otto Vu, as it was known in Italian, went on to be successfully campaigned by racing privateers all over the world, notably finishing fifth in class at the 1952 Mille Miglia, third in class at the Giro della Toscana, and becoming the eventual 2.0-liter champion in the Italian Sports Car Championship. A majority of the competition 8V examples were bodied in lightweight coachwork by Zagato produced in two discreet series, an arrangement that was no doubt precipitated by Elio Zagato’s success in racing one of the earliest examples. The Zagato-bodied cars shared the general proportions of the factory coachwork, a sublime design penned by Fabio Lucio Rapi. Two other coachbuilders were responsible for clothing double-digit batches of the 8V, as Vignale built at least 10 examples, and Ghia built 15 cars, ranging between chassis numbers 000035 and 000056. All but one of these cars wore the Giovanni Savonuzzi-designed Supersonic coachwork. The lone exception, the featured lot, was clothed in one-off aluminum coachwork attributed to Chrysler design boss Virgil Exner, though undoubtedly with significant input from company principal Felice Mario Boano, who was soon to exit Ghia to found his own eponymous design concern. ONE OF ONE According to Tony Adriaensens’ authoritative book Otto Vu, chassis number 000042 was dispatched for the Ghia plant as a rolling chassis in June 1953, occurring about halfway through the sequential and chronological output of chassis to the Turinese coachbuilder. It is not entirely clear what prompted the company to mount the chassis with a different design than the Supersonic, but it is easy to discern the coachwork’s relation to any number of cars that constituted the Italian-American design partnership, including Chrysler models such as the K-310 and d’Elegance concept cars, and the GS1; as well as roughly concurrent Ghia design projects for other manufacturers such as the Alfa Romeo 1900C Supergioiello and the Ghia Cadillac. As attested by period photos from the Ghia archives of the Ford Motor Company, 000042’s coachwork was graced with characteristically thin protruding fenders that framed inset headlamps, and a wide elliptical mouth grille adorned with two crossbars and foglamps. A decorative beltline gave way to a fastback tail surrounded by delicate tailfins, not unlike Savonuzzi’s Supersonic. The interior also showed special consideration, with leather upholstered seats and a driver-focused instrument panel dominated by a large binnacle housing a symmetrically facing half-moon speedometer and tachometer. According to a deep file of research by the collection manager of a former owner, bolstered by period advertisements from Road & Track; period auction catalogues; prior bills of sale and titles; former owner’s correspondence; and the research of John De Boer’s Italian Car Registry, the 8V was imported to the United States circa 1957 by a director or actor in Los Angeles, California. Advertised for sale in August 1957 by a Mrs. Weber of Downey, California, the car passed in 1958 to Charles Trammel of Culver City, who reportedly stored the car for the following 10 years. The Fiat was next acquired in 1968 by Dr. Lynn Gill of Palos Verdes Estates, although a divorce settlement prompted him to offer the 8V in September 1973, and he eventually sold the car at auction in May 1976 to Rick Cole of Marina Del Rey, the budding auctioneer. By this time the car’s original engine, number 000067, had been replaced with a proper 8V engine stamped with BS099 (reflecting that it was part of the 8V engine allotment sold to Siata for use in 208 S production). The car’s nose was also reconfigured with a more standard period look that included bulbous fenders with integrated headlamps, and an eggcrate grille. The alloy coachwork had been painted from its original light shade to rosso, the seats were reupholstered in matching red leather, and the original disc wheel covers were removed to expose the attractive wire wheels that lay beneath. During the ensuing decade, 000042 was sold to Tony Clarkson of Brewster, New York, before being acquired in April 1987 by 8V expert Tony Krivanek, who in turn sold the car to Larry Harvey and commenced a restoration that was part of the transaction. Before the work could be completed, Harvey decided to the sell the car, and buyer Paul Forbes of Redondo Beach, California, assumed the remainder of the refurbishment, for which the Italian car expert Tony Nicosia was retained. Steve Beckman was entrusted to conduct body corrections as needed and to refinish the coachwork. The quality of the restoration was recognized when Forbes presented the car at the 2002 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Mr. Forbes later sold the Fiat and in 2005 it was purchased by David Kelley of Woodside, California, and he presented the car at the 2005 The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering before driving it in the 2006 California Mille. In 2007, Kelley sold the Otto Vu to a collector based in Belgium, who exhibited the car a year later at the ultra-exclusive Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza where it garnered a class award, and the Paleis Het Loo concours d’elegance before offering it at RM Auctions’ London sale in September 2009. The 8V was purchased there by one of the most respected collectors in the United States, who presented the coupe at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, eventually selling it at RM Sotheby’s Arizona sale in January 2014 to the current owner. Under the consignor’s ownership, the coupe was notably accepted for participation in the Colorado Grand, generally recognized as the most exclusive touring event in the United States. In addition to being one of 114 total 8V examples built, and one of just 15 completed by Ghia, this unique 8V carries the unusual distinction of wearing one-off Ghia coachwork that distinguishes it from every other example. Characterized by the unmistakable design cues of Virgil Exner and Felice Mario Boano, and the veteran of an impeccable concours record, this truly unique Ghia is poised for further concours exhibition or driving enjoyment, being eligible for ultra-exclusive tours like the Mille Miglia Storica and the Colorado Grand.   • 1955 Porsche 356 Carrera 1500 GS Speedster by Reutter

    Porsche’s magnificent and complex Carrera “Four-cam” engine was designed in the early 1950s, penned by Dr. Ernst Führmann to power the 550 Spyder. The engineer later joked that he called it the “drawer motor” as his blueprints had to be hidden around Dr. Porsche—the project had not yet been approved. After the 550’s class wins in the Carrera Panamericana road races in Mexico, Porsche made the potent engine available in its production-spec Speedsters and Cabriolets. These special 356 models carry the name “Carrera” in recognition of those racing successes, and they are both extremely rare and much sought after today. The first pushrod-engined Speedster appeared in 1954, after the company’s New York importer, Max Hoffman, and its West coast distributor, John von Neumann encouraged the factory to offer a lightweight and spartan sports roadster to compete with the popular British and Italian sports cars of the day. Speedsters quickly established themselves as the cars to beat in their respective classes. After a 356 coupé fitted with a Fuhrmann engine won the gruelling Líege-Rome-Líege Rally in 1954, Porsche installed a Type 547 four-cam into a Speedster for testing, and similar engines were fitted to a pair of 356 coupés. Low-volume production—just 100 units—began soon afterward. The first 356 Carrera ‘Pre-A’ Speedster intended for public sale was completed in July of 1955, wrote Marco Marinello in the definitive Porsche Speedster Typ 540, and data compiled by the factory’s Olaf Lang places the total of Carrera Speedsters completed at 148. Visually, these special cars were nearly identical to the standard Speedster. Only small gold scripts on the front panels and tail, along with a few extra switches on the dashboard, signalled what lay beneath the engine cover. The dry sump 1,498 cc Type 547 engine was fed by a pair of Solex carburettors and made for 110 brake horsepower at 6,200 rpm. The Carrera's first gear was good for 65 km/h, second to 112 km/h, third brought 160 km/h, and almost 193 km/h flat out—almost unmatched by similar cars of the era. The example offered here, chassis 81079, was transferred from Reutter to Porsche as a complete car in November 1955. The Porsche was built in White with a Black Leather upholstery, according to a copy of its factory Kardex sheet (available to view on file), which also notes that the 356 Speedster was despatched on 4 January 1956. It was destined for the United States and was imported via New York to Hoffman’s famous sports car dealership. It is believed that for a short time, Hoffman used chassis 81079 for his own transport and for show at events, before trading the Porsche to Sweeney British Cars who supplied the car to Baron Daniel von Hermann, a German nobleman residing in California. Curiously, von Hermann entered many races under the anglicised pseudonym “Daniel W. Herman”, which appears in the race results for this Porsche chassis. Believed to be a VW dealer by trade, von Hermann was likely selected to receive this “Pre-A” Carrera, a model that was otherwise unavailable for public consumption. With Herman behind the wheel, chassis 81079 was campaigned extensively in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) events beginning in 1956. Herman’s first podium came with a 2nd-place finish at the Novice Cotati in May 1957, either side of impressive showings at Buchanan Field and Salt Lake. Later in 1957, with the acclaimed driver Skip Hudson behind the wheel, the Porsche was driven to 1st at Arcata Main in September, before claiming victory in both the SCCA National Palm Springs and again at the SCCA National Leguna Seca, both in November. Herman continued to race the car until he sold it in 1960. Chassis 81079 had a succession of California-based owners throughout the 1960s and 1970s—with period correspondence on file between Porsche AG and Louis Lavato, who is believed to have acquired the car in 1970. In the ownership of Mr Lavato, it is unclear for how long the 356 Speedster was used before it was laid up and put into storage. In 1991, it was discovered by the acclaimed Porsche historian and racer, Wayne Baker, who acquired the car and kept it until the early 2000s. It is believed that Mr Baker sourced the period-correct replacement Type 547/1 engine that is currently fitted to the Porsche. The car had two further owners in the United States—the first of which performed sympathetic restoration work (invoices available to view on file)—before it was bought by its consigning owner in 2012, at that point returning to Europe for the first time. In the ownership of the vendor, the Porsche was carefully restored between 2019 and 2021. Within the history file are invoices detailing the restoration work, first with the Dotternhausen-based Boxer Motor & Klassiche Automobile GmbH, and later with the Mackenbeuren-based Autowerkstatt Ludescher. Between the two workshops, more than €55,000-worth of work was completed to finish the 356 Carrera 1500 GS Speedster in the condition it is presented today. After being returned to the consignor, the Porsche participated in the October 2020 running of the Mille Miglia. In addition to the many parts and workshop invoices in its impressive history file, the car is accompanied by a copy of its factory Kardex sheet, a 1992 certificate issued by Porsche Cars North America, a specification folio prepared by Karosserie Reutter, period correspondence from Porsche AG, and a FIVA Identity Card issued in December 2023. After the 550’s class wins in the Carrera Panamericana road races in Mexico, Porsche made the potent engine available in its production-spec Speedsters and Cabriolets. These special 356 models carry the name “Carrera” in recognition of those racing successes, and they are both extremely rare and much sought after today. The first pushrod-engined Speedster appeared in 1954, after the company’s New York importer, Max Hoffman, and its West coast distributor, John von Neumann encouraged the factory to offer a lightweight and spartan sports roadster to compete with the popular British and Italian sports cars of the day. Speedsters quickly established themselves as the cars to beat in their respective classes. After a 356 coupé fitted with a Fuhrmann engine won the gruelling Líege-Rome-Líege Rally in 1954, Porsche installed a Type 547 four-cam into a Speedster for testing, and similar engines were fitted to a pair of 356 coupés. Low-volume production—just 100 units—began soon afterward. The first 356 Carrera ‘Pre-A’ Speedster intended for public sale was completed in July of 1955, wrote Marco Marinello in the definitive Porsche Speedster Typ 540, and data compiled by the factory’s Olaf Lang places the total of Carrera Speedsters completed at 148. Visually, these special cars were nearly identical to the standard Speedster. Only small gold scripts on the front panels and tail, along with a few extra switches on the dashboard, signalled what lay beneath the engine cover. The dry sump 1,498 cc Type 547 engine was fed by a pair of Solex carburettors and made for 110 brake horsepower at 6,200 rpm. The Carrera's first gear was good for 65 km/h, second to 112 km/h, third brought 160 km/h, and almost 193 km/h flat out—almost unmatched by similar cars of the era. The example offered here, chassis 81079, was transferred from Reutter to Porsche as a complete car in November 1955. The Porsche was built in White with a Black Leather upholstery, according to a copy of its factory Kardex sheet (available to view on file), which also notes that the 356 Speedster was despatched on 4 January 1956. It was destined for the United States and was imported via New York to Hoffman’s famous sports car dealership. It is believed that for a short time, Hoffman used chassis 81079 for his own transport and for show at events, before trading the Porsche to Sweeney British Cars who supplied the car to Baron Daniel von Hermann, a German nobleman residing in California. Curiously, von Hermann entered many races under the anglicised pseudonym “Daniel W. Herman”, which appears in the race results for this Porsche chassis. Believed to be a VW dealer by trade, von Hermann was likely selected to receive this “Pre-A” Carrera, a model that was otherwise unavailable for public consumption. With Herman behind the wheel, chassis 81079 was campaigned extensively in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) events beginning in 1956. Herman’s first podium came with a 2nd-place finish at the Novice Cotati in May 1957, either side of impressive showings at Buchanan Field and Salt Lake. Later in 1957, with the acclaimed driver Skip Hudson behind the wheel, the Porsche was driven to 1st at Arcata Main in September, before claiming victory in both the SCCA National Palm Springs and again at the SCCA National Leguna Seca, both in November. Herman continued to race the car until he sold it in 1960. Chassis 81079 had a succession of California-based owners throughout the 1960s and 1970s—with period correspondence on file between Porsche AG and Louis Lavato, who is believed to have acquired the car in 1970. In the ownership of Mr Lavato, it is unclear for how long the 356 Speedster was used before it was laid up and put into storage. In 1991, it was discovered by the acclaimed Porsche historian and racer, Wayne Baker, who acquired the car and kept it until the early 2000s. It is believed that Mr Baker sourced the period-correct replacement Type 547/1 engine that is currently fitted to the Porsche. The car had two further owners in the United States—the first of which performed sympathetic restoration work (invoices available to view on file)—before it was bought by its consigning owner in 2012, at that point returning to Europe for the first time. In the ownership of the vendor, the Porsche was carefully restored between 2019 and 2021. Within the history file are invoices detailing the restoration work, first with the Dotternhausen-based Boxer Motor & Klassiche Automobile GmbH, and later with the Mackenbeuren-based Autowerkstatt Ludescher. Between the two workshops, more than €55,000-worth of work was completed to finish the 356 Carrera 1500 GS Speedster in the condition it is presented today. After being returned to the consignor, the Porsche participated in the October 2020 running of the Mille Miglia. In addition to the many parts and workshop invoices in its impressive history file, the car is accompanied by a copy of its factory Kardex sheet, a 1992 certificate issued by Porsche Cars North America, a specification folio prepared by Karosserie Reutter, period correspondence from Porsche AG, and a FIVA Identity Card issued in December 2023. Highly eligible for prestigious events and rallies, including the Mille Miglia, this exciting and storied 356 Carrera 1500 GS Speedster would be a worthy addition to any Porsche collection.     This Ferrari 365 GTC was ordered new by Mr G.B. Pilkington, the managing director of Vibroplant Limited. At the time, Vibroplant Limited was the market leading plant hire company specialising in road construction equipment. The company was going from strength to strength, rolling out its equipment that would help to build Britain’s motorway network throughout the 1960s and 70s. In early 1969, Mr Pilkington began communication with Michael Salmon of Maranello Concessionaires, the sole UK importer of Ferraris, looking to learn more about the latest models available. Copies of the original communication between Pilkington and Salmon are contained within this car’s impressive history file. Originally ordering his GTC to be supplied in Blu Tourbillon over a scarlet hide; after ‘a complete change of heart’ the order was amended, and his allocation change to car already in build. In early July 1969, Ferrari invoiced Maranello Concessionaires for this 365 GTC, one of only 22 examples to be finished in right-hand drive. The car was finished in his revised choice of Oro Nashrullah with a Nero interior. However, Mr Pilkington had wanted to amend the Nero interior to a Pelle Beige VM 3218 interior. To later to be completed by the factory, the car was returned to Pininfarina before delivery to be fitted with a beige interior. The Ferrari invoice also notes that the car was to be delivered via air freight, quite unusual for this era but perhaps a result of the delay incurred by having the interior changed. By the end of July, Maranello Concessionaires delivered this 365 GTC to Mr Pilkington, whilst also accepting his Mercedes Benz 250 SL, valued at £3,500, on part exchange. Copies of this correspondence and original sales invoices are contained within the history file. Interestingly, on the Maranello Concessionaires invoice, we can see that a “radiomobile with twin speakers, etc” was also fitted, costing in excess of £55! The car was UK registered on license ‘DYG 921H’. Mr Pilkington had a passion for luxury cars and regularly made visits to his various plant depots in the north-east. We can see from further period documentation that he requested and arranged with Maranello Concessionaires for his personal mechanic to travel to London for a week, where he would receive specialist Ferrari training, working exclusively on 365-engined road cars to enable him to maintain the 365 GTC. Later, this car was re-registered in the UK with license ‘YGV 81G’ before being exported to Australia by Maurice Quincey, a well-known, Melbourne-based motorcycle racer and dealer, who imported the car alongside another 365 GTC. Passing to Harley Archer, the car was then purchased by Tony Hargreaves, who attended to replacing the clutch and tending to some bodywork, namely new panels and sills fabricated by Peter Tommasini. The next owner would be Mr David Rodd, a resident in Victoria, Australia, an avid Ferrari enthusiast, who also owned a 1951 195 Ghia Aigle Coupe and a 1967 275 GTB/4. Rodd continued the restoration, commissioning further work to the car’s interior, mechanical and paint. Whilst ‘Down Under’, the car was regularly maintained by Sports and Classic Car Services. Also during its time in Australia, this 365 GTC was bought by Mr Brian Meredith and was then returned to the UK by Mr Yates in late 2012. A few months after the car’s return in early 2013, the car would see its first visit to our own workshop where improvements were made to the running condition, and a subsequent road test by David Cottingham resulted in the car being signed off as the ‘best 365 GTC driven of late’ at that point in time. In June of 2024, the GTC benefitted from a major service at an expense of over £5,000 at marque specialists GTO Engineering.   • 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint 1

    Delivered new to New York in 1960, this Giulietta Sprint represents the very best that Alfa Romeo produced. Launched in April of 1954 at the Turin Motor Show, the fresh Bertone design was a showstopper and demand were off the scale. Orders exceeded 500 on day one and total sales exceeded 130,000 cars before production ceased in 1965. Its position as one of Alfa’s greats was secured. Not only was it a wonderful car to look at its performance was outstanding. Never intended as a race car, its advanced specification and weight of around 900kg had proved to many Italian drivers that it would be well suited to the 1300 cc class in GT racing, which was growing rapidly in popularity at that time. It went onto to score countless victories at home and overseas and was regularly at battle with Porsches and other cars of fine pedigree. According to the Heritage Certificate which accompanies the car our Giulietta was produced in 1959 and was originally Nero in colour. It made it to Australian shores in the late eighties and since then it has had just 3 owners with the current owner now thinning his collection after 14 years of ownership. The original 1300cc motor has been replaced by a later Alfetta unit fitted with twin webers which gives the car a healthy increase in power and torque and makes for an entertaining drive. The 5-speed gearbox is a delight to use, and the 5th gear makes for more comfortable driving at higher speeds. Out on the open road the little Sprint is a delight and its reputation for a giant killer easy to understand. The steering, suspension and lack of weight make for an agile car with spirited driving characteristics. The car now wears an Alfa Rosso colour which was applied around 25 years ago. The body of the car is in good solid condition with no signs of significant rust or rot. At distance the paint presents well however on closer inspection it shows surface imperfections with some age-related marks here and there. It has been this way for many years and can of course be left as is or can be attended to by the new owner. The body is without any significant bumps or damage, and we feel would benefit from a good cut, polish and detail however it retains a good shine as is. The brightwork presents well from a distance however is showing signs of age with some pitting and fading on some areas. The interior was replaced by the current owner some 9 years ago which included cars and seat upholstery. The seats whilst not correct for an Alfa Romeo suit the car well. The headlining is original and shows minimal staining and is tight and in place. The wheels have been refurbished at some point with correct profile tyres. The boot still has its original mat and the boot floor is in good order with a spare wheel. The combination of a larger engine, fine-handling, responsive chassis and excellent brakes make the Giulietta Sprint a true Alfa Romeo and explains why these stylish cars continue to attract the discerning enthusiast today. Overall, this represents a great ‘drivers car’ which can be driven as is or further improved by the next owner should they wish to.     Brian Angliss - the founder of AutoKraft - had a small restoration business in the 1970s and was specialized in the legendary Shelby Cobra. In 1982, he obtained the name rights and the right to build Cobra-shaped cars from AC Cars Ltd. Ford became aware of the beautiful roadsters and so in 1987 a collaboration with AutoKraft took place and the company was authorized to use the Cobra name and logo from then on. It is therefore only understandable that the Cobra Mk IV produced in Surrey, England, is regarded in the scene as the legitimate successor or continuation of the original Shelby Cobras from the 1960s. Like these, the Mk IV has a tubular frame chassis, a wide alloy body and a Ford drivetrain - about 480 vehicles were produced between 1986 and 1996. Our car - AK1238 - was built in January 1989 and delivered to the Swiss importer Exclusive Cars in Versoix. As Cobras were difficult to sell at the time, the car remained with the importer and was exhibited on their stand at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1990. In June of that year, the Mk IV was registered for the first time and used as a demonstration car. In August 1995, with 1’150 kilometres on the clock, the beautiful roadster was finally taken over by its first and so far, only private owner. Due to his emigration in August 2000, he deregistered the Cobra and parked it in his dry garage for almost 24 years. As he didn't want to part with his beloved roadster and to avoid damage as far as possible, he treated himself to a drive with the dealer plates of a garage friend at least once a year every time he visited his old home. In May 2024, the AC was taken out of its home and carefully put back into operation. With around 4’900 driven kilometers, the Cobra is in remarkably original condition. The Ford 5-litre V8 with fuel injection and catalytic converter delivers 228 hp and runs perfectly, and the 5-speed gearbox shifts absolutely correctly and crisply.     This highly original V8 Volante is a rare example of Aston Martin’s fast and luxurious soft-top. Only 157 right-hand-drive examples were built using Weber carburettors before the model switched to fuel injection. The Heritage Certificate for chassis number V8/COR/15133 states that it was built on 19 October 1979 and despatched on 11 January 1980. An original UK home-market car, it was finished in Tourmaline Blue with Magnolia leather and an Off White hood, and was fitted with the three-speed automatic gearbox that perfectly complements the 5.3-litre V8 engine. The service book shows that, in November 1981, the Aston Martin was bought from Victor Wilson Ltd of Edinburgh by James McNeil. It was initially registered in the name of McNeil’s Glasgow-based business – Apollo Window Blinds Ltd – but in 1989 he registered the Aston in his own name, and held on to it until 2010. It then passed to a new owner who used it for travelling between an underground garage in Scotland and his summer home in Ascona, Switzerland. In 2018, the underside of the V8 Volante was treated to an extensive refresh, with work being carried out on the suspension and brakes. The history file includes photographs of that process, plus two service books featuring stamps going back to 1980, the period sales brochure, leather tool roll and the original Owner’s Manual. The diamond-cut wheels have been refurbished and the Aston is still presented in its original colour combination. It was featured in issue 228 of Octane magazine, with an impressed Robert Coucher writing that ‘its engine is the heart of the beast. Once fired, it is loud and proud and the whole car throbs with soulful verve… depress the throttle pedal to the stop [and] the big V8 wakes up and bellows, the Aston squats on its rear de Dion axle and takes off.’ This Aston Martin V8 Volante is a car that we know well and is being offered for sale in beautifully original condition. Recent work during the current ownership has included both front seats being stripped down and re-foamed, the carpets and underfelt being replaced throughout, and the door cards being refurbished. A new fuel pump has also been fitted, plus new power-steering hoses. The end result is a superb example of this muscular British grand tourer that’s ready to be used and enjoyed throughout the summer. In 2018, the underside of the V8 Volante was treated to an extensive refresh, with work being carried out on the suspension and brakes. The history file includes photographs of that process, plus two service books featuring stamps going back to 1980, the period sales brochure, leather tool roll and the original Owner’s Manual. The diamond-cut wheels have been refurbished and the Aston is still presented in its original colour combination. It was featured in issue 228 of Octane magazine, with an impressed Robert Coucher writing that ‘its engine is the heart of the beast. It is important to know that the line between a soulless full restoration and the almost equally laborious preservation of a patinated interior, a factory-fitted roof lining, carpet, dashboard and all instruments, switches, etc. is a very fine one!     Background Launched in 1992, the E36 M3 was the second generation of BMW’s high performance sports coupé. The new design came with a good level of practicality, more room, more creature comforts and was easier to use on a daily basis, the main focus being on the new 6-cylinder engine, originally launched as a 3.0-litre, producing 286 bhp. The M3 was restrained visually, a real ‘sleeper’ with just a few giveaways such as the aerodynamic mirrors, front and rear bumper aprons and distinctive 17” wheels. The M3 was 30mm lower than the standard 3-Series, with enhanced handling. If you didn't spot these differences, the sheer power of the M3 gave it away as something quite special. In 1993, the convertible model was added, offering the same performance, with added roof-down appeal. Two years later, the M3 got a slight facelift with some minor cosmetic changes, but the biggest change of all was the addition of the 3.2-litre straight-six, like the one we have here.   • 1983 Lamborghini Countach LP5000 S

    When it comes to launching an all new model of an automobile, especially high performance supercars, introductions of these new models are said to be either evolutionary or revolutionary. In its early days, being renowned for its front-engined, V-12 grand tourers, Ferrari often took the evolutionary route. Knowing what its clients liked and what Ferrari were best at, it is natural to see the evolution from 166, to 212, to 250, to 275, and then to 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’. Just 35 kilometers down the road from Maranello in the little town of Sant’Agata Bolognese, Automobili Lamborghini chose to go the revolutionary route with the introduction of the Miura in 1966. The Miura changed the performance car industry forever, with its stunning Bertone-penned bodywork and transversely-mounted V-12 engine sitting just behind the cabin, it was nothing like the 275 GTB being built by Ferrari at the time. Lamborghini could have simply rested on its laurels for the Miura’s replacement but once again decided to go the route of revolution over evolution, and the introduction of the Countach cemented Lamborghini’s place in the hearts and minds of enthusiasts worldwide. Again designed by Bertone, the Countach looked like nothing else on the road and was a huge departure from the Miura. Still retaining a V-12 engine, but now mounted longitudinally instead of trasnvesrsely, this format has remained with all of the ‘big’ Lamborghinis ever since. The evolution of cars to come: Diablo, Murciélago, Aventador, and now Revuelto, can all trace their lineage to the Countach. This Countach was built to left-hand-drive specifications and was first registered in Italy on export plates in March of 1983, having been purchased new by Prince Khaled Al Faisal of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Retained for his use in Europe, the Countach’s 1,000-kilometre service—which remains in the car’s history file—shows that he was living at the Intercontinental Hotel in Geneva as of April 1983. The invoice further states that the car would be transported back to the Intercontinental Hotel once the work had been completed! At some point, Al Faisal exported the car to the UK registering it under his personal numberplate “1 KF” and keeping the car at his address in St. Johns Wood in London. The Countach remained in Al Faisal’s ownership until December 1989, when it was purchased directly from him by the current owner. The handwritten bill of sale, which remains in the file, states that: “the car has a genuine mileage of approx. 3,800 kilometres, and to the best of my knowledge is free of all mechanical faults”. Throughout the 1990s, the current owner (a serial Countach enthusiast who has owned no fewer than 14 examples) proceeded to use and enjoy the Countach as its manufacturers intended—at speed on the road! The benefits of a 5000 S over earlier Countaches would not have been lost on him: these cars saw power grow to 375 brake-horsepower, courtesy of a new 4.8-litre V-12 engine fed by six Weber carburettors. Though only 321 LP5000 Ss were manufactured—including the example offered here— the model cumulatively outsold the two previous generations of the Countach in just the second year of its three-year production run. The vast majority of the car’s current mileage, showing just under 23,500 kilometres from new, was accumulated during the current owner’s first decade of ownership, and it has been driven just over 1,000 kilometres in the past 17 years. The Countach’s lovely history file includes documents from throughout its life, including the aforementioned Italian export registration documents and bill of sale, as well as numerous MoT certificates, service invoices, and its original manuals, including its original service book. It presents in well-preserved condition throughout, clearly having been well looked after from day one. In 2023, Lamborghini is a global icon at the height of its powers. With production growing year on year, Countach variants are becoming an ever smaller subsect of Lamborghini’s total production, yet arguably represent the marque’s most recognisable automobile due to its revolutionary nature and succession of models that followed in its footsteps. In its early days, being renowned for its front-engined, V-12 grand tourers, Ferrari often took the evolutionary route. Knowing what its clients liked and what Ferrari were best at, it is natural to see the evolution from 166, to 212, to 250, to 275, and then to 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’. Just 35 kilometers down the road from Maranello in the little town of Sant’Agata Bolognese, Automobili Lamborghini chose to go the revolutionary route with the introduction of the Miura in 1966. The Miura changed the performance car industry forever, with its stunning Bertone-penned bodywork and transversely-mounted V-12 engine sitting just behind the cabin, it was nothing like the 275 GTB being built by Ferrari at the time. Lamborghini could have simply rested on its laurels for the Miura’s replacement but once again decided to go the route of revolution over evolution, and the introduction of the Countach cemented Lamborghini’s place in the hearts and minds of enthusiasts worldwide. Again designed by Bertone, the Countach looked like nothing else on the road and was a huge departure from the Miura. Still retaining a V-12 engine, but now mounted longitudinally instead of trasnvesrsely, this format has remained with all of the ‘big’ Lamborghinis ever since. The evolution of cars to come: Diablo, Murciélago, Aventador, and now Revuelto, can all trace their lineage to the Countach. This Countach was built to left-hand-drive specifications and was first registered in Italy on export plates in March of 1983, having been purchased new by Prince Khaled Al Faisal of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Retained for his use in Europe, the Countach’s 1,000-kilometre service—which remains in the car’s history file—shows that he was living at the Intercontinental Hotel in Geneva as of April 1983. The invoice further states that the car would be transported back to the Intercontinental Hotel once the work had been completed! At some point, Al Faisal exported the car to the UK registering it under his personal numberplate “1 KF” and keeping the car at his address in St. Johns Wood in London. The Countach remained in Al Faisal’s ownership until December 1989, when it was purchased directly from him by the current owner. The handwritten bill of sale, which remains in the file, states that: “the car has a genuine mileage of approx. 3,800 kilometres, and to the best of my knowledge is free of all mechanical faults”. Throughout the 1990s, the current owner (a serial Countach enthusiast who has owned no fewer than 14 examples) proceeded to use and enjoy the Countach as its manufacturers intended—at speed on the road! The benefits of a 5000 S over earlier Countaches would not have been lost on him: these cars saw power grow to 375 brake-horsepower, courtesy of a new 4.8-litre V-12 engine fed by six Weber carburettors. Though only 321 LP5000 Ss were manufactured—including the example offered here— the model cumulatively outsold the two previous generations of the Countach in just the second year of its three-year production run. The vast majority of the car’s current mileage, showing just under 23,500 kilometres from new, was accumulated during the current owner’s first decade of ownership, and it has been driven just over 1,000 kilometres in the past 17 years. The Countach’s lovely history file includes documents from throughout its life, including the aforementioned Italian export registration documents and bill of sale, as well as numerous MoT certificates, service invoices, and its original manuals, including its original service book. It presents in well-preserved condition throughout, clearly having been well looked after from day one. In 2023, Lamborghini is a global icon at the height of its powers. With production growing year on year, Countach variants are becoming an ever smaller subsect of Lamborghini’s total production, yet arguably represent the marque’s most recognisable automobile due to its revolutionary nature and succession of models that followed in its footsteps. Almost every owner of a modern Lamborghini has lusted after a Countach at some point in their life and owes it to themselves to experience the icon. An eye-catching example like this that wants for nothing and would make a perfect stablemate to a Urus, Huracan, or a V-12 model that can trace its roots to Lamborghini’s revolutionary Countach.
