  • 1959 Lancia Appia GTE Series II by Zagato

This GTE is understood to be one of the first five examples imported to the United States by dealer Max Hoffman. Its early history is presently unknown, but a 1965 Northwestern University parking sticker (preserved during the car’s later restoration) indicates it soon made its way to the Midwest, as does a period key chain bearing an Illinois license plate number. According to the late collector Ray Boniface, who would himself purchase the car in 1987, the car had been acquired by Howard West of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by the late 1970s. Boniface cherished his cars, rarely parting with them; the Appia would remain in his collection until 2012, when its previous Ohio-based owner finally convinced him to sell. He would enjoy using the Lancia, then painted red, for daily driving duty in the warmer months until 2015. He then decided to have it restored. Greece-based marque specialist Chris Skriapas was tasked with the comprehensive, no-expense-spared job, spanning 2015–2017. The engine (numbers-matching per the Lancia Appia Zagato Register) was rebuilt, along with the other mechanicals; chassis corrosion was corrected; and aluminum bodywork was stripped and repaired as needed. The car’s original color, Grigio Newmarket, was uncovered during this process, though an attractive Blu Lancia—a period-correct factory color—was selected for its exterior finish. It is paired with a red interior. Post restoration, the Appia has seen limited road use, and its stunning Zagato coachwork dazzled showgoers at concours events including Amelia Island, Greenwich (earning the Speed and Style award in 2017), Hilton Head Island (achieving class and Automotive Design Excellence awards in 2018), and the Concours d’Elegance of America. After being purchased by the consignor in 2022, the car was soon after sent to a shop in Litchfield, Connecticut for a mechanical restoration totaling just under $20,000. Invoices on file detail the work performed on the brakes, suspension, engine, drivetrain, cooling system, and even the interior gauges. In addition, corrections were made to the body at a separate garage in order to better restore the original look of the car. Today, the Lancia presents in spectacular condition, but more importantly, it runs and drives better than ever, and it is ideally suited to tour and rally use. Offered with photographs of its restoration, this 1959 Lancia Appia GTE Series II by Zagato is worth consideration by any collector of rare mid-century sports cars. 1959 Lancia Appia GTE Series II by Zagato RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. In the opinion of many Alfa Romeo enthusiasts, the race-developed Giulia Tubolare Zagato, or TZ-1, was the ultimate embodiment of the marque’s popular four-cylinder model line. This striking example claims original ownership and period racing use by a colorful cultural figure, Dmitri Nabokov. Nabokov was the son of the highly acclaimed literary novelist Vladimir Nabokov, the multilingual intellect most widely known for penning the legendary Lolita and Pale Fire. But although Dmitri Nabokov may have been the son of one of the world’s most celebrated writers, he was so much more: An accomplished academic writer and translator in his own right, Dmitri was also a talented athlete and an aspiring opera singer who once took the stage with Luciano Pavarotti. On top of all that, the younger Nabokov was a dyed-in-the-wool sports car enthusiast, at various times owning a Triumph, Bizzarrini, Dodge Viper, MG, and several Ferraris, among many others. Completed in April 1964, chassis number 750061 was finished in Bianco paint over Nero leather-upholstered seats and built with a double-bubble roof. As Nabokov measured nearly six feet, five inches with a racing helmet, he claimed to have personally specified this feature. The car is the only TZ-1 delivered new with a double-bubble roof—a feature so closely associated with Zagato coachwork today—making it extraordinarily rare and desirable from the outset. Nabokov immediately set about campaigning the Alfa Romeo, entrusting the car for competition preparation to the well-known Italian driver/tuner Carlo Facetti, and then running in some 23 different races over the next season and a half. During that stretch, the TZ-1 achieved numerous class wins and top-three finishes at various events at Monza and in European hillclimbs throughout 1964, and it placed 4th in the GT 1.6 at the 1000 Kilometers of Monza in 1965. That August, Nabokov offered the Giulia for sale, and it was acquired by Alec Mildren, an Australian driver/dealer who soon resold the car to fellow Aussie Max Brunninghausen of Sydney. Brunninghausen campaigned the Alfa Romeo in the well-known Tasman Championship, achieving a 1st-overall finish at the Warwick Farm International in February 1966. As detailed in the April 1969 issue of Sports Car World magazine, a copy of which is on file, when Brunninghausen was able to acquire a TZ-2, he traded the TZ-1 back to dealer Roy Compton, although Martin Ubelher and Patrick Dasse’s well-researched book Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ claims that the privateer continued to race the car during 1967 for Ian Hindmarsh Motors. For the 1968 season Compton repainted the coachwork in bronze (as it appears in the article) and updated the mechanical components, including installation of a fresh engine, which is presumably the currently equipped motor. The local racing authorities disqualified the TZ-1 on a technicality, however, so Compton detuned the engine and sold it to Fred Calloway, the owner at the time of the magazine feature. Passing to Nick and Leonie Langford by 1984, the TZ-1 was eventually offered at a Sotheby’s Australia sale in November 1990, by which point the coachwork had been repainted red, and the car was noted to be equipped with the currently installed 536-series block from a 1966 Giulia GT. Owned by Neil Marsden of Melbourne, the Alfa Romeo remained in Australia until 1991, when it was sold to the current owner, a dedicated marque collector. The consignor immediately re-commissioned the TZ-1 for vintage racing, taking runs at Moroso, Sebring, and Watkins Glen during the early 1990s. During the 2010s, a renewed effort was invested in the car’s racing condition, and it was fitted with a new fuel bladder, a correct ring-and-pinion set, and a proper airbox that was custom-built in the correct factory style. Following participation in the 2012 US Vintage Grand Prix and July Sprints, the consignor commissioned PHP Racengines, Inc. of Wauconda, Illinois, to conduct a full engine rebuild to competition specifications in 2015. Well-documented with a parts catalogue, owner’s manuals, owner’s correspondence, and maintenance invoices, this beautifully presented TZ-1 is an ideal candidate for further event enjoyment or display at marque gatherings and owner’s club meets. Also a strong basis for full restoration to its original factory configuration, the rare TZ-1 “Double Bubble,” with unique and unrepeatable provenance, promises to thrill both marque purists and racing aficionados alike. 1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ-1 'Double Bubble' RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1972-de-tomaso-pantera-group-4-02

he vision of one man, endurance as the ultimate arbiter Alejandro De Tomaso was not a constructor like the others. A former Argentine racing driver who competed in Formula One, he belonged to a generation for whom motor racing was not a marketing tool, but a deeply rooted culture. Based in Modena, at the very heart of Italy’s automotive world, he founded his marque in the early 1960s with a clear ambition : to design sports cars capable of rivaling the finest European machines, while relying on robust, rational engineering solutions. After the confidential Vallelunga and Mangusta, the strategic alliance with Ford marked a decisive turning point. It enabled De Tomaso to give birth to the Pantera, a model conceived from the outset as a true GT—equally at home on the road and ready to take on the great endurance races. A road-going GT with racing firmly in its sights Unveiled in 1970, the Pantera immediately asserted its personality. Its bodywork, penned by Tom Tjaarda for Ghia, was low, taut and almost feline, while retaining a distinctly Italian elegance. Its mid-rear engine layout set it apart from traditional GT cars and left no doubt as to its sporting ambitions. The earliest road versions, now known as pre-L models (1971–1972), are the closest to De Tomaso’s original vision. Lighter and still relatively unconstrained by American regulations, they were powered by the Ford Cleveland 351 cu in V8 producing around 330 hp, mated to a ZF five-speed manual gearbox. Capable of exceeding 250 km/h, the Pantera proved both fast and reliable—an essential quality for a car whose road use was, in reality, merely the natural extension toward the racetrack. From 1972 onward, the Pantera L (Lusso) introduced additional comfort and equipment, particularly for the American market, without betraying its sporting DNA. The rarer Pantera GTS moved even closer in appearance to the competition cars, its wider tracks and more aggressive stance clearly foreshadowing the racing versions. The move to competition: the Pantera hardens For Alejandro De Tomaso, racing was not simply a stage on which to perform, but a genuine laboratory. As early as 1971, the Pantera left the confines of the road to enter competition, soon being homologated in Group 3 and then Group 4, the premier GT category of the early 1970s. Unlike some rivals conceived from the outset as pure race cars, the Pantera was forged on the track, evolving incrementally through successive seasons and endurance events. The Group 4 Pantera At the heart of the Group 4 Panteras campaigned between 1972 and 1976 lay the Ford Cleveland 351 cu in V8, fully prepared for racing. Balanced, reinforced and optimized for endurance, it produced between 450 and 480 horsepower depending on specification. More than outright power, it was the engine’s torque availability that made the difference, particularly on fast circuits. Induction systems varied significantly according to teams and seasons. Some Group 4 Panteras favored Holley four-barrel carburetors, prized for their robustness and ease of adjustment during races, while others adopted Weber 48 IDA carburetors, offering more precise throttle response at high revs. On a handful of particularly developed cars—especially those entered in 24-hour races—a Lucas-type mechanical fuel injection system was employed to improve running consistency and sustained performance over long distances. The ZF five-speed gearbox, strengthened for competition, remained one of the cornerstones of the Pantera’s endurance reliability. Gear ratios were tailored to individual circuits, with longer ratios for fast tracks and shorter gearing for more technical layouts. The monocoque chassis was stiffened with numerous welded reinforcements, while the suspension was completely reworked with specific dampers and geometries adapted to endurance racing demands. Wider tracks significantly improved high-speed stability and corner-exit traction, allowing the Pantera to compete effectively with the Porsche Carrera RSR. Braking—vital in long-distance racing—also evolved continuously. Early large-diameter ventilated discs gave way to more durable configurations using Girling calipers, then AP Racing units, combined with optimized cooling, essential on demanding circuits such as Spa-Francorchamps and Le Mans. Stripped to the bare essentials and lightened to the extreme, the Group 4 Pantera weighed approximately 1,100 kg. Its aerodynamics remained relatively discreet, focusing above all on efficiency, with vented body panels to improve cooling and widened bodywork strictly compliant with period homologation regulations. The great endurance races: the Pantera against the benchmarks The Pantera made its debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1972, entered by several private teams, including Escuderia Montjuich and Société Franco-Britannic. Facing formidable opposition from Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytonas and works-supported Porsches, the Panteras encountered the full demands of the Le Mans classic. While the event was marked by several retirements, one car nevertheless reached the finish, classified 16th overall—a significant result for a model still in its learning phase. The following year, in 1973, several Group 4 Panteras again took the start at Le Mans. Run exclusively by private teams, they reflected De Tomaso’s determination, together with his partners, to persevere in endurance racing, even though race conditions and reliability issues prevented a classified finish on that occasion. This persistence nonetheless contributed to refining the cars for subsequent seasons. It was, however, at the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps that the Pantera found its ideal proving ground. On this fast and demanding circuit, the Group 4 Pantera competed in the over-3-liter GT category alongside Ferrari Daytonas and Porsche 911 Carrera RSRs—direct rivals against which it could perform on almost equal terms. As early as 1972, the Pantera distinguished itself with strong class results, notably with a car driven by Herbert Müller and Cox Kocher, which finished sixth in its category, demonstrating immediate competitiveness despite the still exploratory context. In 1973, whether at Spa or during the 1000 km rounds of the European Championship, the Panteras confirmed their consistency and ability to go the distance against German and Italian competition. Entered concurrently in the World Championship for Makes and the European GT Championship, the Panteras secured several class victories and podium finishes on iconic circuits such as Monza, Zeltweg and Paul Ricard. Supported by leading technical partners—Agip, Castrol, Valvoline and Goodyear—they were entrusted to experienced drivers including Clay Regazzoni, Mike Hailwood, Mario Casoni and Hans Heyer, whose expertise played a decisive role in the cars’ performance and reliability. A legend forged by endurance Between 1972 and the late 1970s, the De Tomaso Pantera established itself as one of the most distinctive and exotic GT cars of its era. Rarely victorious overall, it built its reputation on consistency, robustness and a strong class record, standing its ground against the established benchmarks of Ferrari and Porsche. A versatile Group 4 Pantera: eligible and immediately usable Imported from the United States by its current owner in 2019, the car was entrusted to O-One, near Paris, for conversion to historic racing specification. This De Tomaso Pantera Group 4, based on a 1972 chassis, benefits from a complete and coherent preparation, designed both for historic competition and for more regular use in track days or historic rallies. Powered by a Ford Cleveland 351 V8 producing approximately 370 hp, equipped with a Holley four-barrel carburetor and mated to a ZF five-speed manual gearbox, it delivers first-class performance while retaining excellent reliability and ease of operation. Equipped with an FIA Historic Technical Passport valid for circuit racing, hill climbs and rallies, and compliant with Group GTS 27 – Period H1, the car is immediately eligible for major European events. The chassis, adjustable suspension, limited-slip differential and Girling brakes have all been revised to provide an effective and accessible driving experience, both in race conditions and during intensive track use. Presented in very good overall condition and accompanied by a comprehensive history file, this Group 4 Pantera represents a rare opportunity for an enthusiast seeking a spectacular GT capable of combining competition, track days and rallies, without compromise between performance, driving pleasure and regulatory compliance. 1972 De Tomaso Pantera Group 4 Historic Cars If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright he vision of one man, endurance as the ultimate arbiter Alejandro De Tomaso was not a constructor like the others. • 1963-shelby-289-cobra-2

From its debut, the Shelby Cobra was instantly renowned for its classic hot rod formula of ample horsepower in a lightweight package. This combination was incredibly capable in skilled hands, but it demanded respect—for just like its namesake, the Cobra could quickly turn and bite an unwary driver. This fortunate Cobra, chassis CSX 2134, survived one such harrowing ordeal and rose to live a second life as intriguing as its first. CSX 2134 began life as any Cobra, constructed by AC Cars in England and dispatched for New York on 27 June 1963 aboard the SS American Commander. Upon landing on American shores, it was transported to Shelby American where it received its engine and chassis upgrades. Originally finished in off-white over red trim, the Cobra was factory-prepared with the Class “A” accessory group including white sidewall tires and a luggage rack. On 24 August 1963, CSX 2134 was consigned along with four other Cobras to W.J. Janner of Ford Motor Company Car Sales Promotion in Dearborn, Michigan. CSX 2134 was shipped via Shelby American truck to the Ford District office in Kansas City, Missouri. Interestingly, the Shelby American Automobile Club Leaf Spring Cobra Registry reports that future Ford Racing Director Jacques Passino was invoiced for the car on 16 September 1963. This was possibly for accounting purposes, as the car continued its service as a demonstrator until mid-1964, when CSX 2134 was returned to Shelby American with just over 6,000 miles displayed on the odometer. Upon receipt, Shelby American added accessories such as new bumper guards, convertible top, side curtains, tonneau, and floor mats, while performing various minor repairs and a complete respray in Lucite before distributing it for sale via Carroll Shelby & Lew Spencer's Hi-Performance Motors of Los Angeles, California. While details of its first private owner are lost to history, the car’s true story begins after an accident at the hands of its second owner, David R. Knisley of California. The Cobra was rendered inoperable and the original aluminum body was heavily damaged from the accident, so Knisley sold the impaired Cobra in 1972 to Charles R. Luscombe who soon admitted his “intention of repairing the body had been overly optimistic.” Luscombe removed what remained of the damaged body, disposed of it in a landfill, and placed the Cobra chassis into storage. In April 1995, after more than two decades in repose, Luscombe sold CSX 2134 to noted Carson City, Nevada-based drag racer Chet Bunch, who immediately began a comprehensive restoration. He commissioned a new aluminum body from esteemed metalsmiths Bruce and Collin Kimmons of Lake Havasu, Arizona, who crafted the body with competition-inspired features such as flared fenders, riveted hood scoop, and provisions made for heavy-duty side exhaust, driver roll bar, front and rear quick jacks, and an FIA-style fuel filler before shipping to Bunch’s own restoration shop for final assembly. A renowned restorer in his own right having previously worked on such iconic competition cars as the "Flip-Top" Cobra 427 prototype, Corvette SR-2, and "Gulf One" Z06 Corvette, Bunch envisioned this Cobra being his lifelong pride and joy. Determined to spare no effort or expense demonstrating the full extent of his mechanical expertise, Chet spent the next 20 years crafting CSX 2134 into the ultimate driving Cobra. While acknowledging the inherently sensitive nature of altering an original Shelby Cobra, Bunch believed the extensive modifications he deemed necessary might be more acceptable to purists if carried out in the same fashion as Shelby American in the 1960s. What followed was an intricate, costly, and labor-intensive series of enhancements to reinforce the chassis, mirroring the methods used on Shelby’s legendary Daytona Coupes. This involved adding lengths of tubing to the frame in triangulated patterns to maximize rigidity and preserve weight distribution, all while ensuring the upgrades remained discreet. With the chassis completed, Bunch fabricated a rocker-arm coilover suspension system in place of the original leaf springs, again taking great care in ensuring his modifications were easily removable should a future owner choose to return to factory specifications. For power, Bunch custom-built an engine to his exacting standards, starting with a Mexican 302-cubic-inch V-8 block, believed by many to be a stronger casting well-suited for additional power. The engine was stroked to 347 cubic inches and equipped with numerous performance upgrades backed by a four-speed manual transmission, yielding a reported 509 horsepower while still running on street gasoline. The interior appears stock with a wood-rimmed steering wheel, Smiths gauges that monitor performance, and bucket seats with lap belts. The exterior features Cobra-branded wind wings, a driver's side-view mirror, a side exit exhaust, and Halibrand knock-off wheels with BF Goodrich tires. Now offered for the first time in 30 years, the car’s next steward faces the enviable choice of enjoying a remarkably drivable Cobra that far exceeds its factory capabilities—or, alternatively, returning the car to the way in which it left Shelby American to honor its early history as a FoMoCo demonstrator. 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. • 1980-ferrari-308-gts

The Ferrari 308 GTB, introduced in 1975, clearly indicated, with its designation, what‘s under the bonnet: a 8-cylinder engine with 3 litres capacity. It formed the basis of a very successful model in Ferrari lore being in production for 10 years. In 1977, the GTB Berlinetta was joined by the GTS Spyder Targa version which became rather famous through the American TV series Magnum with Tom Selleck chasing baddies with his 308. Our GTS was not used by a private detective but was delivered in Switzerland on the 23rd of October 1980 through Garage Ruf AG in Oftringen. The further history of the Ferrari is not known but the service booklet indicates that the Targa had been driven around 24’000 kilometres in the first two and a half years. Apparently after a longer period of storage, in September 2019, at 57’731 kilometres, a major service was performed which included a replacement of the cambelt as well as the water pump. The most recent service was performed in April 2020 at 58’782 kilometres. In June 2023 the 308 was taken over by its last owner who, at the end of 2024, has decided to reduce his collection. With now 61’300 kilometres driven, the pretty sportster is in good and well-maintained condition and will be sold with the most recent veteran MOT from October 2024. 1980 Ferrari 308 GTS Oldtimer Galerie International GmbH If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer.
