The BMW 3200 CS Bertone is the belated successor to the BMW 503 Coupé within the BMW 501/502 ‘Baroque Angel’ series; whilst it is technically based on these models, the bodywork is not made of aluminium as in the 503, but is conventionally constructed from sheet steel, and was produced not by the coachbuilder Baur, but by Bertone in Turin. The body shells were then transported by rail to Munich and finished at BMW. The car’s design is one of Giugiaro’s earliest; having spent his apprenticeship at Bertone, he gave the car a understated, Italian-inspired sports car silhouette featuring panoramic windows and frameless side panes. The 3200 CS was luxuriously equipped; amongst other things, it was one of the first German cars to feature electric windows. It offered generous space and a spacious boot for its class, but was largely overlooked at its launch at the 1961 IAA, as the long-awaited ‘New Class’ (BMW 1500), unveiled at the same time, attracted all the attention. The 3.2-litre V8 aluminium engine with twin carburettors produced 160 hp in the 3200 CS and enabled a top speed of 200 km/h. To ensure sufficient production capacity for the BMW 02, which was newly introduced in 1966 alongside the four-door models, BMW discontinued production of the V8 coupé in 1965 after only 603 vehicles had been built. This BMW 3200 CS Bertone was originally delivered to Switzerland and was first registered in the canton of Lucerne on 15 October 1962. The rare coupé was acquired by its last owner over 40 years ago. In 2015, he had the bodywork and mechanics restored, and the original interior was refurbished. Until his passing in January 2026, he used the BMW for occasional drives in fine weather and to attend classic car events. Today, this beautiful and rare car – only 603 were built – is in good to very good condition and runs perfectly. The most recent veteran MOT took place in November 2020, meaning the car can remain registered in most German-speaking cantons until the end of November 2026.
