- 1968 Mercedes-Benu 280SL
European Specification 2.8-liter inline six -- 170 HP Rare 4-speed manual transmission In its original color combo, Blue with Bamboo Leather Complete rotisserie restoration by Coachworks/Rudi & Company Hardtop, spare wheel/tire, toolkit, manuals, and extensive documentation Mercedes-Benz introduced the 230SL, a brand-new roadster that would eventually replace the 190SL and 300SL, in the spring of 1963. The 230SL "Pagoda" was an exquisite two-seat convertible with sharp lines and upright headlights that was developed by Paul Bracq and adhered to Mercedes' new design philosophy. The 230SL was given a large three-pointed star in its grill as a nod to the 300SL, which was already recognizable. The hood, door skins, trunk lid, and tonneau cover were all made of aluminum to reduce weight. Due to the optional removable hardtop's slightly concave roof, which resembled a pagoda, the moniker "Pagoda" was immediately embraced. These SLs are now regarded as masterpieces of design, despite being divisive at the time of their introduction. When Mercedes unveiled the 280SL, the third and last generation of the "Pagoda," in 1967, it became clear that some automobiles don't change; they only get better. After evaluating a 280SL in 1968, Road & Track stated, "The Mercedes-Benz 280SL, the latest iteration of a line that started as the 230SL in 1963, is the same as ever, just better." According to its manufacturer, the 280SL is "a Grand Tourer in the traditional sense" and "a unique combination of sports car performance and saloon car comfort (a Mercedes-Benz saloon of course)." The highly regarded American motoring magazine praised it as "alone in the field" for those who value engineering, finesse, and high-quality construction. The 280 featured the same modified W111 chassis (W113) with a rear swing axle and independent front suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. Power came from a 2.8-liter version of Mercedes' robust inline-six and used Bosch fuel injection, a combination producing 160 horsepower in US-market variants, and 170 horsepower in European models such as this vehicle. The majority of US models were equipped with 4-speed automatics with only a rare few being made with a 4-speed manual as opposed to the European models which saw a larger quantity of manual transmissions. This specific 280SL is undoubtedly a cut above the rest. First purchased by a Canadian air force pilot, this vehicle was acquired during his station in Germany. Upon returning back to Canada he imported the vehicle with him where he continued his ownership for well over a decade until selling it to its second owner who after a few years sold the car to the most recent owner. The most recent owner owned this 280SL for almost 30 years, receiving it in 1994. He was a retired pilot, who stored the vehicle in his hangar and would only bring the vehicle out on days when there was no chance of rain. 2016 marked the beginning of a two-year-long 100% rotisserie restoration performed by Coachworks and Rudi & Co. and meticulously overseen by the owner. During the restoration, he would visit on a biweekly basis and although he did not perform the restoration himself, he played a huge role in its success. He personally flew over difficult to source original parts for the project regularly. Here at Canepa, we are no strangers to restorations of the highest level and can speak from experience that this 280SL fits the bill. All aspects of the vehicle were brought back to exactly the way they left the factory 55 years ago. During the exhaustive restoration, the owner displayed acute attention to detail to a level that is rarely seen, pushing Coachworks and Rudi & Co. to perform a restoration beyond their already high-level award-winning usual. Every nut and bolt was inspected and no aspect of the vehicle was overlooked. All mechanical components were inspected, reconditioned, restored, or replaced as needed. A complete engine overhaul was performed utilizing all new internal engine components. Once completely stripped down, the vehicle was restored to perfection utilizing laser precision. When painting the car, the same degree of accuracy was exemplified making sure everything was period correct. All body gaps once painted were uniformly set at 4mm. Anything that would or wouldn’t have been seen on the original car was taken care of. As a testament to the attention to detail, the hood features streaks and paint that runs toward the lower half. In their earlier years, Mercedes would dry their hoods by hanging them so the owner had the same done during the painting process to mirror the original paint job. All new factory glass and a mixture of replated and N.O.S. parts were used for the chrome. The original Bamboo Leather interior upholstery and carpets were completely restored and go perfectly with the recently completed paint creating this stunning color combo. Upon arrival at Canepa, every collector car for sale is put through an extensive and diligent process called the “Canepa Difference.” This includes a major and comprehensive mechanical inspection where all systems are checked, serviced, and restored as needed. They also receive an award-winning concours-level detailing, including a thorough cleaning of each and every surface. This 280SL passed our inspection flawlessly, as expected with how well restored and taken care of the vehicle was. Bruce has only seen three 280SL’s restored to this level, with one being a 280SL Canepa restored nearly 20 years ago. Do not miss this extremely rare chance to own what might well be the finest example of a European spec 1968 Mercedes Benz 280SL in its marvelous original color combo and the highly sought 4-speed manual transmission. 1968 Mercedes-Benu 280SL Canepa If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1955 Lotus MK9 EX Sebring 12H
Behind the wheel of this Lotus Mark 9, sitting low to the ground and gazing at the long hood through the Plexiglas screen, it's impossible not to conjure up images of vintage racing. Offered for sale, this Lotus Mark 9 is one of 30 cars built. Having taken part in every edition of Le Mans Classic and numerous races in the 60's and 50's, it is eligible for Goodwood - and is one of only two Lotus models eligible for the Mille Miglia. Small, light, durable and capable of superb performance, it's a top choice for all these events. Colin Chapman, brilliant young engineer and founder of Lotus, was already making a name for himself when he presented his Mark 9 in early 1955, the first two cars being ready to race at the Sebring 12 Hours in March. This was the first Lotus to be offered as a fully-built car, previous models being sold only as kits, and in its sales literature the company described the "Lotus system" of providing "two types of chassis, on which different engines could be mounted". These two chassis types were the Mark 6 and the Mark 9. The latter was advertised with Ford and MG engines, but most cars were sold with the Coventry Climax 1098 cm3 four-cylinder engine around which the Mark 9 had been designed. Front suspension was provided by swing axles with combination shock absorbers and coil springs, while the rear was fitted with a de Dion system with trailing arms and a Panhard bar. Braking was by magnesium drums, although discs were fitted on some cars, and a Ford steering box was used. The whole was clad in an aerodynamic wrap-around body designed by Frank Costin and manufactured by Williams & Pritchard. The car was praised for what Autosport described as its "exceptional cornering powers". When John Bolster tested one for the magazine, he achieved a top speed of almost 130 mph. Chapman and Ron Flockhart shared a Mark 9 at Le Mans in 1955, and "Auto Course" declared that because of the speed it displayed from relatively low power, the Lotus "can be described as the most efficient car in racing".It is thought that around 30 Mark 9s were built. Although only produced for a short time, it is considered by enthusiasts to be the link between the Mark 6 and the 11, and therefore occupies an important place in Lotus history. INTRODUCTION Two Lotus Mark Nines competed at the Sebring 12 Hour Sports Car race in 1955 – the first Lotus entry in a major international race outside UK. Race number 79 was driven by Frank Miller and George Rabe, and race number 78 by Norman Scott and “Sam” Samuelson. Because no relevant Lotus factory records survive from this time, the chassis numbers of the two Sebring cars are not known, and currently Historic Lotus Register refers to them as “Sebring 1” and “Sebring 2”. This note is primarily concerned with “Sebring 2”, the Scott/Samuelson car. The first owner of “Sebring 1” was Frank Miller of New York. The first owner of “Sebring 2” was Bobby Burns of Wichita Falls, Texas. MODEL HISTORY Following the success of the cycle-winged Lotus Mark Six in the early 1950’s, Lotus produced a derivative in 1954 with streamlined bodywork designed by de Havilland aerodynamicist Frank Costin. The car was designated Mark Eight. In 1954 Coventry Climax announced the availability of an 1100cc sports car engine, the FWA, based on their lightweight fire pump engine. One of the earliest of the FWA engines was fitted to a Lotus Mark Eight owned by Dick Steed, which first raced in September 1954. It was the first of many Coventry Climax engines to be fitted in a Lotus, but the installation in Dick Steed’s car was just a one-off. For the 1955 season Lotus designed a new car specifically to accept the new Coventry Climax engine, and this was the Lotus Mark Nine. The production Lotus Mark Nines had a multi-tubular chassis frame very similar to that of the 1954 Mark Eight, which was itself derived from the Mark Six chassis. The all-enveloping body, again designed by Frank Costin, was about 2 feet (610 mm) shorter than the Mark Eight’s. Front suspension was typical of Lotus at that time, with swing axles produced by cutting a Ford E93 beam axle in half and pivoting it in the middle. Rear suspension was de Dion, as on the Mark Eight, but this time using two long radius arms per side and a Panhard rod for location. Although a few cars had MG or Ford 10 engines, most of the 30 or so Mark Nines built had Coventry Climax FWA engines. Production Lotus Mark Nines had very large drum brakes, 11 inches (279 mm) diameter and 2.25 inches (57 mm) wide – enormous for a light 1100cc car. The brake drums were magnesium with cast-in steel liners. However it appears that there were early production problems with the brake drums (apparently with the bonding in of the steel liners), and the first two Mark Nines to be built – the two 1955 Sebring cars – had to be delivered with smaller Alfin brakes. The two Sebring cars were the only Mark Nines to have the smaller brakes, which were 9 inches (229 mm) diameter and 1.75 inches (44 mm) wide. There were also some chassis and bodywork differences from the later Mark Nines, which is not surprising since these two cars were effectively prototypes for the later cars. The differences make the two Sebring cars unique and easy to identify. It is interesting to note that when Autocar magazine described the Lotus Mark Nine (1st April 1955) the photographs which were used were of the Sebring cars. The two Sebring cars were delivered to their American owners, Frank Miller and Bobby Burns, in March 1955 (Autosport 18th March 1955, and Motor Racing April 1955). They seem to have had virtually no testing by Lotus before they were driven down to Southampton to be shipped to America. “SEBRING 2” (The writer is extremely grateful to Clark Lance, who owned “Sebring 2” for many years, for the history of the car whilst it was in America). The two Lotus Mark Nines at Sebring in 1955 were both vying for the lead in their class for the first part of the race. Then “Sebring 2”, whilst being driven by Samuelson, went off the track and cracked the sump on an obstruction in the grass. It seems that the driver had been blinded by the low evening sun. The result was that the car had to retire. (See Autosport, 25th March 1955 and Sports Car Illustrated, July 1955). There was a feature article about “Sebring 2” in Road & Track for June 1955, but it is thought that the photograph in the article of the car by the aircraft cargo door actually shows “Sebring 1”. After the Sebring race the car was raced in South West America by Norman Scott and owner Bobby Burns. Norman Scott was placed 1st in the Fairfax National races, Fairfax, Kansas on 5th September 1955. Bobby Burns was advertising the car for sale in Road & Track in November 1955 for $4,500. Ownership during 1956 is not known. “Sebring 2” was owned by Hamilton Presterbridge of Baton Rouge, Louisiana from late 1956 to late 1957. He competed with it at the Mansfield Louisiana National Races, 25th November 1956 and March 1957 (SCCA Sports Car Magazine January, May and July 1957). He advertised the car for sale in Road & Track, October 1957. Ownership from 1958 to 1960 is not known. Next recorded owner was Wendell Green of New Mexico. He and his son raced “Sebring 2” in Texas and California in 1961 and 1962. The current owner (Pierre Pinelli) has the 1962 New Mexico title to the car in the name of Wendell Green, and this quotes engine number 6258 which would be correct for an early 1955 Coventry Climax FWA. Wendell Green traded the car for an engineless Lotus Eleven from Chicago, Illinois in 1962. Between 1962 and about 1969 “Sebring 2” was reportedly owned by Tito Nappi of Rockford, Illinois. During this time it appears that a start was made on installing a Chevrolet V8. Don Kruzan of Rock Island, Illinois acquired the car (with V8) around 1969 in exchange for some Alfa Romeo parts. Clark Lance bought “Sebring 2” from Don Kruzan in 1971, and retained it in its largely original state until selling it to Pierre Pinelli of Nice in November 2002. “Sebring 2” was sent to Mike Brotherwood of Chippenham, England for restoration, arriving on 10th January 2003. The writer saw the car shortly afterwards at Mike Brotherwood’s premises, and it was clear that, thanks to the stewardship of Clark Lance, it had remained in remarkably original condition – a real “time warp” in fact – and the unique features shown in the 1st April 1955 Autocar photographs were there to be seen. Almost all of the original chassis and bodywork were used in the restoration; the chassis footwell cross tube had to be replaced after it had been cut about for the V8 installation and the undertray was replaced for the same reason. A new rear access hatch was also made. Otherwise the original parts were all re-used. Sold then to two French owners the car has participated many times in Le Mans Classic and Peter Auto races, sold by us to its last owner; we bought the car and engage it regularly in Le Mans Classic and in 50's by Peter Auto. "Sebring 2", is one of the most original Lotus Mark IX, ready to race and the first ever Lotus to enter an international race, made it eligible for the best world events. It will be delivered with a nice set of spare parts and a very nice historical file. 1955 Lotus MK9 EX Sebring 12H Historic Cars If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL
The SL series, short for “Sport Leicht” or “Sport Light,” has been an emblem of Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to excellence in engineering and design since its inception in the 1950s with the now iconic 300SL. Going on 71 years in production, the SL series has continued to evolve, with each new generation building upon the successes of its predecessors. By the time the 560SL was introduced in the late 1980s, the SL series had already firmly established itself as a symbol of luxury and performance. This lineage is carried on to the modern day, with the SL series still offering the same luxury and performance that the original cars did over 70 years ago. The 560SL was the range-topping model for Mercedes-Benz in the 1988 production year. Part of the now iconic R107 series, the 560SL was only offered in North America, Canada, Japan, and Australia. Powered by a robust 5.6-liter V8 engine, the 560SL delivered a potent 227 horsepower, making it a joy to drive on both city streets and open highways. The car’s acceleration was smooth and effortless, and it featured a four-speed automatic transmission that ensured a comfortable and refined driving experience. The 560SL also benefits from the timeless design of the R107 series Benzs, with its sleek, aerodynamic body lines and distinctive round headlamps. Inside, the interior was a masterclass of comfort and craftsmanship, offering leather upholstery, wood trim, and a host of amenities that showcased Mercedes-Benz’s dedication to luxury and quality. The R107 series production ceased in 1988, with the redesigned R129 taking its place for the 1989 model year. Even decades after its production ceased, the 560SL maintains a strong presence in the collector car world, and values for great examples have remained relatively high over the years. Furthermore, the 560SL was known for its robust construction and reliability, which means that many well-preserved examples can still be found on the road today, as long as proper maintenance was done throughout the car’s lifetime. The R107 series cars all retain great collectability, but the range-topping 560SL certainly draws the most desire from collectors. Pricing has seen a slow and steady rise over the years, with low-mileage cars finished in interesting colors and featuring proper service history bringing the strongest money. While there is little likelihood of pricing skyrocketing on these models, we see them as a safe bet for the future, as long as you do your due diligence on the car’s history and choose a good example with low miles and interesting colors, such as the example offered here. This 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL, chassis # WDBBA48D6JA088342, is a one-owner from new, extremely original, time-capsule example showing just 5,310 original miles. It features beautiful original Midnight Blue paint throughout the exterior and a wonderfully preserved Burgundy Leather interior. The car also includes its factory color-matched hard top that has never even been placed on the car! According to the included original window sticker, this 560SL was sold new in 1988 through Estate Motors of Birmingham, Michigan, to its one and only owner, who has placed the car on consignment with us. The original suggested retail price when new was $63,410. The car has lived its entire life just up the road from the original selling dealer in Troy, Michigan, and it returned to the dealership when needed for service work. Service receipts are present from 1988, showing the car’s first service. General service receipts are available for the first few years of the car’s life, showing regular maintenance, but as with cars with mileage this low, there really is not too much to report. The car was serviced regularly, with oil and fluid changes each year at the local Mercedes-Benz dealer, and was driven very sparingly with a CARFAX entry from September of 1997 indicating 4,400 miles on the odometer. As it sits today, this is likely as close to purchasing a brand-new 560SL as one could hope to get 35 years later. This car has been maintained and protected impeccably and remains in absolutely outstanding original condition. With its low miles, excellent colors, and fastidious ownership, this truly represents the pinnacle of collectability for the R107 series Mercedes-Benz and would be an excellent cornerstone in any collection. Included with the sale are the factory color-matched hardtop that has never been placed on the car, the original window sticker, available service records, clean CARFAX, factory books, and manuals, as well as the original hang tags for the car. EXTERIOR Body And Paint The original Midnight Blue paint is in amazing condition, with a beautiful and consistent finish throughout the car. The metal is smooth everywhere you look or feel. The panels are straight and well-aligned with good gaps, and the body is straight down the sides. The accompanying hard top is just as nice and is believed to have never been used. Overall, this car presents exactly how you’d expect a 5,300-mile time capsule would. Glass And Trim The glass is all original, along with the trim. The glass presents in like new condition all around. The chrome brightwork all around the car is very shiny and clear. The rubber trim pieces are still a deep black with minor wear present but matching the originality of the car. Wheels The wheels are free of any curb rash or scuffing and show virtually no signs of wear. INTERIOR Seats And Surfaces The seats are in very good condition, showing only very minor signs of wear from ingress and egress, but absolutely commensurate with an excellent original example. The original red carpet throughout the cabin displays wonderfully, fits as if new, and is free of staining or fading. The dash is in fantastic condition, with smooth clean wood, bright and clean gauges, and smooth issue free dash top. Overall the interior remains in wonderfully preserved condition, and it truly in astounding original condition. Functionality And Accessories All systems inside work as they should, including the power passenger side mirror, which is known to lose functionality. The A/C works as it should, as well as the radio and the cassette player. ENGINE BAY AND TRUNK Engine Bay The engine bay is incredibly clean. The paint surrounding the latches and hinges is unlike any 560 we have seen with no chipping or wear in these areas. All factory stampings and markings are still visible. All hoses and plastics are still deep black with no dryness or symptoms of cracking. Trunk Area The trunk area is nice and tidy with the correct red carpets to match the rest of the interior. The spare is located underneath the carpet as well as the battery. Underside The underside is virtually spotless. There are 0 issues to note and is likely the cleanest undercarriage on a 560SL you will ever see. Factory VIN stickers all present in place and very legible. MECHANICALS Engine The engine starts up quickly with no hesitation. Acceleration is strong and smooth with no hiccups or stumbles. Transmission The transmission shifts quietly and peacefully through the gears and the only real indicator that the car is shifting is audibly. Brakes And Suspension The brake pedal is firm, and brings the car to a smooth and controlled stop. The suspension, while soft is very comfortable but sprung in a way that still feels sporty. Tires The tires are Pirelli P6 Cinturato and they are from 2018 with plenty of tread and great sidewalls. DRIVING EXPERIENCE The SL series has always provided an excellent balance of power and comfort and the 5.6 liter V-8 in the R107 560SL combined with the simple yet beautifully appointed interior certainly does not disappoint. These cars provide a wonderfully useable classic experience, with a supple and smooth ride and plenty of power to keep up with modern day traffic and cover mileage, whether it be on twisty back roads or long stretches of highway. This particular 560SL provides the unique experience of being able to purchase what aquits to essentially a factory fresh car. With just 5,310 miles from new and beautifully preserved exterior and interior, this could be considered a once in a lifetime chance to experience what driving off the lot with a range topping 560SL would have felt like in 1988. 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL LBI Limited If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1971 Porsche 911
The Porsche 911 2.2 T (T for Touring) is THE 911 Classic. It is often regarded as the little sister of the 2.2L. Produced for just two years, its 125 bhp engine was replaced by a 155 bhp on the 2.2 E and a 180 bhp on the 2.2 S. Light and precise, the Porsche 911T is a reliable car. Pleasant to drive, without forgetting that it’s an old lady, it will seduce purists. The characteristic sound of its flat 6 makes you vibrate as soon as you start the engine. As standard, the 911 T had a 4-speed manual gearbox. This one was ordered with an optional 5-speed gearbox, gold Porsche lettering on the rear bonnet and a single round rear-view mirror on the left, which gives it a real charm. Our 911 T is originally from the United States. It was delivered in 1971 in the much sought-after Bahia Red with the traditional Fuchs 5-spoke wheels, which are still in good condition. As its certificate of authenticity indicates, it has retained its original colour scheme and engine. The interior, all in tan beige leather, is original and in a good state of preservation given its age. The comfort seats are well supported and have no cracks or holes. The original maintenance book is supplied with the car. The 911 remained in the hands of its first owner for 16 years. It was then owned by the same family and serviced by the same specialist Porsche garage in Omaha between 1987 and 2016. All the invoices detailing the operations carried out are provided. In 2016, the Porsche belonged to a French gentleman living in the States. He brought it back to France in 2018 and waited until 2019 to register it. All necessary works were done to keep the body and the inside of the 911 beautiful. It continued to be serviced regularly. It was then sold to the current owner who has enjoyed his oldtimer occasionally. To ensure a perfect use, he recently spent another 4000 EUR of works. All in all, we can say that this 911T is a healthy car that was cherished by its various owners, has always been regularly maintained but has not benefited from a full restoration. It is a beautiful exemplar of the 2.2L , the purest incarnation of the 911, the real Porsche Classic. The 911 T is best appreciated on a daily basis. A car that’s easy to live with, so beautiful, so endearing … which is still as attractive after more than 50 years of existence. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright The Porsche 911 2.2 T (T for Touring) is THE 911 Classic. - 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster
Forty six years ago in February, 1964, the last 300SL Roadster to be built and sold new to America arrived via ocean liner. Delivered in August 1963 via the European delivery program, chassis #3254 was one of the last five 300SLs built by Daimler Benz. One of four identical white-with-red roadsters built in the final week of production, it was the only one destined for America. The other three were delivered to European owners. These were the last production sports cars with a direct link to Mercedes factory racecars. Fourteen hundred Gullwings were built between 1954 and 1957. Eighteen hundred and thirty two roadsters were built between 1957 and the end of 1962. Only 26 roadsters were manufactured in 1963, the final year of production. During the ten years of 300SL production, the car was under constant development. During the final 1 months of this time span, 210 roadsters, only 6.4% of the total, were built with aluminum engine block, disc brakes and steering locks. Alloy block engines were used in the 300SLR factory racers of 1955 and in the two competition 300SL roadsters raced by Paul O'Shea to the SCCA class D championship in 1957. Mark and Mercedes Pollack were the original owners of this time warp roadster. They were tobacco merchants who were forced to leave their home in Cuba in early 1960 following the fall of the Batista government. They left behind their 45-acre estate, their business and an automobile collection that included a Bugatti, 3Ferraris, a Gullwing and a white with red 300SL roadster. Fidel Castro now resides in their former home in Cuba. The Pollacks later maintained homes in North Carolina, Madrid and Geneva. In August 1963 while visiting Andorra, Mrs. Pollack read that the 300SL had been discontinued. She immediately called the factory, was informed that only four 300SLs remained and purchased the only remaining white with red roadster, her color preference, sight unseen. Mrs. Pollack was persuasive. Notwithstanding the American list price of $11,500 and the European list price of $8,200, Mrs. Pollack negotiated a sale at $6,500. Her original bill of sale confirms that this was perhaps the least expensive new roadster ever sold by Daimler Benz. She named it "La Paloma Blanca". At the time, uncomfortable with a manual transmission, she arranged for a factory representative to drive her home to Geneva. The Pollacks returned it to the factory in October 1963 for service and installation of options. Mercedes posed with La Paloma Blanca in this 1963 photo taken in Switzerland that also shows the dual side mirrors, customs plate and the luggage rack. The European headlights have been replaced with the sealed beam type as required for later transportation to the U.S. The Pollacks returned with the car via ocean liner to New York City in February, 1964 and drove it home ot North Carolina. Unfortunately, Mark's vision deteriorated and it was placed in storage after having been driven only 16,000 miles in 1966. In a deal brokered by Ed Jurist of the Vintage Car Store in Nyack, New York, La Paloma Blanca was sold to Ann Hallowell of Greenwich, Connecticut in January 1977. Ann and Morris Hallowell are antique dealers who have a sophisticated appreciation of mechanical precision, beauty, rarity and history. Ann preserved its low-mileage originality and mechanical condition as she drove it only 2,500 miles during her 20 years of ownership. Ann posed for the accompanying photo with her roadster in 1990. Frank and Beverly Spellman acquired it in 1997. It has been driven less than 28,200 miles since new. It is the only European specification roadster ever purchased through the European delivery program. In 1998 and 1999 it was a class winner in its all-original condition. In 1999, it was rear- ended in a minor fender-bender as it was prepared for the Greenwich Concours. Paul Russell was entrusted with the repair and carefully walked the fine line between restoration and preservation of its low-mileage originality. It was given a bare metal Pebble Beach quality total repaint, engine bay detailing and a new soft top. The mechanical aspects were carefully inspected and complete servicing was done. Options and accessories include chrome sport wheels with the original Continental white wall tires; soft top; Becker Grand Prix semi-transistor radio; Reims short wave adaptor; Hirschman antenna; jack; tool kit; and factory competition seatbelts. Original Hepco factory luggage with the original luggage tags remains in the trunk. The one-of-a-kind trunk-mounted ski and luggage rack is believed to be a factory prototype. It is fitted with Karl Baiche factory luggage as was delivered with the Pollack Gullwing. The snow skis and poles were made in Norway in the 1950s. Manuals, warranties and service records have all survived. The original European delivery order book and original upholstery book remain with the vehicle. The original auto club badges and rally badges are from auto clubs of which Mark was a member and from rallies the Pollacks attended while in Europe. The original luggage stickers are from ocean liners on which the Pollacks traveled. The Bullock-Mercedes knockoff hubcaps give the appearance of knockoff wheels. Only three other sets are known to exist. During 2000-2005, this vehicle received numerous awards, including three "Best-of-Show" trophies and major awards at The Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, The Meadow Brook Concours d' Elegance, The Burn Foundation Concours, The Greenwich Concours, The Radnor Hunt Concours, The Concours d'Elegance of Hilton Head Island, The Concours d'Elegance at Cranbrook, The Gull Wing Group Convention, and The Antique Automobile Association National Meet. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright Forty six years ago in February, 1964, the last 300SL Roadster to be built and sold new to America arrived via ocean liner. The “delivery plaque” on the dashboard “Specially built for” is neutral – it probably served as a show car for Ghia of America in LA. The car was imported to Switzerland in 2013 and completely restored over several years with thousands of hours of work to a high standard, professionally and without regard to cost. It is comprehensively documented from 1982 onwards and the original US title, various magazines, correspondence, original newspaper articles from 1966 and invoices dating back to 1977 are also present, as is the original hardtop in unrestored condition. The Ghia 230S Coupé (1963) on the cover of Road & Track motivated Hollywood producer Burt Sugarman (BS) to commission Ghia to produce the 450 SS in 1965. By agreement, it was sold through his new subsidiary Ghia of America on Whilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles for the incredible price of 13,000 US dollars. At the time, the price exceeded that of a Ferrari 250. The Ghia 450 SS (displacement + Super Sport) was originally presented at the 1966 International Motor Show in Turin and was produced by hand in very limited numbers until 1967. Officially, only 52 (but 57 by chassis number) examples were produced and sold exclusively through the importer in Beverly Hills to those who could afford such a car. These included a number of film and music stars. - 1989 Ferrari F40 3
One can rightly opine that Ferrari's 201mph F40 is the definitive supercar, and has a formidable reputation alongside the 250 GTO as possibly the best road-going Ferrari built to date. With the seismic introduction of the F40 in 1987, Ferrari and Pininfarina produced an era-defining creation of angular beauty, one that even today is instantly recognisable by old and young enthusiasts alike. The 2.9L flat-plane crank V8 at the heart of the F40 produced 470HP through the assistance of dual IHI turbochargers, and with a svelte curb weight of 2,765lbs, the F40 was staggeringly fast thanks to a mammoth power-to-weight ratio, earning it the title of being the first road car to surpass the mythical 200mph boundary. Closely derived from the Group B 288 GTO and the experimental GTO Evoluzione, the F40 exudes what was the pinnacle of Ferrari motorsport technologies at the time, with the extensive use of carbonfiber composites, massive turbochargers, and minimal driver aids, the F40 instantaneously held a steadfast placement within the hallowed halls of automotive greats. The Cultivated Collector’s 1989 Ferrari F40, Chassis 80774, is an early example of the breed and is a “Non-Cat Non-Adjust” that was supplied new in 1989 through the French Ferrari distributor Charles Pozzi. 80774’s first caretaker, Emile Balthazard, was a very well known and respected French enthusiast who exercised the car frequently while maintaining the highest of maintenance standards. Mr. Balthazard would lovingly care for 80774 for just over 20 years until the car moved to the UK where DK Engineering would sell the car to its first UK owner, who would retain the car for a short two year period. The subsequent caretaker would retain stewardship of 80774 for 10 years, where during that time the car would reside, fully pampered, at DK Engineering’s state of the art storage facilities, while receiving regular attention by their masterful service department. Recently, in June of 2019, 80774 received its last major service which included replacement of the cambelts, as well as four new tires and fitting new fuel tanks, and in March of 2020 the car would return to DK Engineering’s service team to be the recipient of a new clutch and flywheel. Since completion of this most recent work in 2020, the car had covered a mere 300km before being acquired in January of 2022 by The Cultivated Collector, thus beginning its latest adventure stateside. Complete with history documents from new, manuals, Classiche binder, and tool kit, 80774 is ready and needing nothing beyond an enthusiastic new caretaker. 80774 is an example that represents a splendid and unique F40 ownership opportunity, as the 60,000km the car has covered to date ensures future stewards the opportunity of carefree enjoyment of the car for what it is - a masterpiece of Ferrari engineering to the highest degree. 1989 Ferrari F40 The Cultivated Collector LLC If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer.
