- 1964 Alfa Romeo Sprint GT
After the success of the Giulietta’s lines, the 105-Series Giulia Sprint GT was announced in 1963, and was immediately acclaimed as a suitable successor to the 101-Serie cars. The basic body shape shared by all models was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro for Bertone. It was one of his first major projects for Bertone. It was revealed at a press event held at the then newly opened Arese plant on 9 September 1963, and displayed later the same month at the Frankfurt Motor Show. In its original form the Bertone body is known as scalino (step) or "step front", because of the leading edge of the engine compartment lid which sat 1 cm (0.4 in) above the nose of the car. We're looking at a sports car! with 50 years of hindsight, every stylistic detail of the Sprint GT is a real invitation to nostalgia. It is difficult to remain marbled facing that enchanting yet so pure design. Under the hood, we find all the strength of Alfa Romeo: its engine. Faithful to a long tradition as an engine manufacturer, Alfa Romeo has built a 1.6-litre engine that presents an astonishing modernity for the time. This in-line four-cylinder engine had alloy cylinder head and block. In total 21,902 Giulia Sprint GT were produced from 1963 to 1965, when the model was superseded by the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce. According to the Centro Documentazione Alfa Romeo, our car, chassis AR 610699, was produced on December 21th, 1965 and delivered on the 22th of the same month to the French market in Paris. The car spent its first 8 years in Paris, and was purchased by Mr Stanghelini, Major of a small town in Poitou. Mr Stanghelini use his beautiful Alfa for years before having en engine failure and keep the car inside his garage for long. The car has just been totally restored and has many Alfaholics improvements (Detailed in the car file…). 1964 Alfa Romeo Sprint GT ARNAGE Classic Car Consulting If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1969 Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior Scalino
The Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior was the entry model to the Alfa Romeo coupé range. It was introduced in 1965 as the replacement for the 101 series Giulia Sprint 1300, which was the final development of the Giulietta Sprint series. The GT 1300 Junior was fitted with the 1300 (1290 cc) twin cam engine (74 mm bore × 75 mm stroke), as fitted to the Giulietta series cars, but revised for the 105 series with reduced port sizes and other modifications. The smaller engine was introduced in order to allow buyers to choose an Alfa Romeo coupé while avoiding the higher taxes on the models with larger engine capacity, especially in Alfa Romeo's home Italian market. The first GT 1300 Juniors produced were based on the Giulia Sprint GT, with a simpler interior. The major external identifying feature was the black grille with just one horizontal chrome bar. The same 9/41 final drive ratio was maintained, but with a shorter 5th gear ratio of 0.85, instead of 0.79 as on all the other 105 Series coupés. In 1968, concurrently with the replacement of the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce by the 1750 GTV, the GT 1300 Junior was revised with many of the new parts from the 1750 GTV. This included the dashboard, the suspension and the new wheel size of 5½ × 14J instead of 4½ × 15J. In 1970 the Junior was revised a second time, and received the same nose treatment as the 1750 GTV, without the step but with only two headlights. For 1972, new wheels featuring smaller hubcaps with exposed wheel nuts like those on the 2000 GTV were fitted. At the same time, the GT 1600 Junior was introduced alongside the GT 1300 Junior. From 1974 the GT1300 Junior and GT1600 Junior were both rationalised into a common range with the 2000 GTV and were rebadged as 1.3 GT Junior and 1.6 GT Junior. According to Centro Documentazione Alfa Romeo, our GT Junior, chassis AR 1233589, was sold new on 27.03.1969 by Official old Alfa Romeo dealer SAVIM to Mr Ambrogio Allevi, class 1936. The car was delivered with one of the best colour combo, rare Grigio Indaco with a Rosso Amaranto interior wich make the car very special. Mr Allevi living in Vigevano (Pavia) keep the car more than 40 years… The car is very original with a great and very documented history, all original Alfa Romeo documents, original set of keys. The car was fully restored the last two years and is back now with its stunning Grigio Indaco original body colour. Mechanically in perfect condition, ready to meet its new owner. 1969 Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior Scalino ARNAGE Classic Car Consulting If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1989-ferrari-328-gts-1
The ultimate 170mph sports car in its day and now regarded as a true design classic, this Targa-topped, UK-supplied car is on offer from long term, diligent ownership. The entirely new Ferrari 308 made its debut at the Paris Salon in 1975 and marked a welcome return to Pininfarina styling, with rakish lines and curved haunches. After ten years of huge success, particularly in the US, Ferrari had grown weary of the 'Federalisation' of their lovingly designed motorcars in America, with mandatory ugly rubber bumpers ruining the Pininfarina-penned lines. With their Italian aesthetics under attack, Ferrari launched the new 328 with body-coloured front and rear bumpers which adhered to US guidelines and for the first time, the design remained unadulterated by bureaucracy. Increasing both bore and stroke, the Quattrovalvole engine's capacity was raised to 3,186cc which, together with a higher compression ratio, revised pistons and an improved Marelli engine management system, lifted maximum power to 270bhp. Top speed was raised to within a whisker of 160mph with the sprint to 60mph covered in a fraction over 5.5 seconds. Beneath the skin, the tubular steel chassis remained much as before, with all-round independent suspension by double wishbones, four-wheel servo-assisted disc brakes and aluminium-alloy wheels, though the latter were increased in size. The interior too had come in for subtle revision and now featured improved instruments, switchgear and heating. Pininfarina built two variants of this mid-engine sportscar, the Gran Turismo Berlinetta Coupé and the Gran Turismo Spider (GTS) featuring a removable Targa-top, offering an exhilarating open-air driving experience and affording the driver and their fortunate passenger unbridled access to the unmistakable howl of the Ferrari V8. Production ended in 1989 and by then some 7,412 GTS and GTB variants had rolled out of Maranello, with just 543 GTS cars supplied to the UK in right-hand drive. This particular UK-supplied 328 GTS from the final year of production is offered fresh to market after 15 years with its current custodian having been originally supplied by Maranello Concessionaires Sales Ltd to its first owner on 4th April 1989. It's classically presented in Rosso Corsa with Crema hide and was specified ABS, air-conditioning and a body-coloured rear aerofoil. Enjoyed by several owners in the intervening years, the GTS passed into the safe hands of our vendor in 2010, a retired Rolls-Royce Engineer and Ferrari Owners Club member, so it will come as no surprise when we confirm that the majority of the required service work has been undertaken by himself, including cam belt changes every three years, the latest of which will be completed prior to sale with, in his words, 'more care, attention and due diligence than would normally be lavished upon such a vehicle'. It should also be noted that it has just been presented for an MOT inspection passing without advisories. Used sparingly during present ownership but diligently maintained during that time, our vendor has stressed that the GTS has never missed a beat at any point during his ownership on any of its excursions which have not only been within the UK but also further afield into Europe, taking in various Ferrari meetings and Classic Tours along the way. Complete with toolkit and jack and a comprehensive history file comprising the original document wallet complete with handbook, service books, numerous MOT certificates and various invoices that have been amassed over the years. It should also be noted that the current registration number, JIB 713, pleasingly is to remain assigned to the vehicle and does form part of the sale. 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS Iconic Auctioneers Ltd If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright The ultimate 170mph sports car in its day and now regarded as a true design classic, this Targa-topped, UK-supplied car is on offer from long term, diligent ownership. This 1980 Porsche 928 S is no ordinary grand tourer. Transformed in period by the legendary DP Motorsport, it embodies the raw styling, race-inspired aggression, and bespoke craftsmanship that made DP creations icons of their time. With its massively flared bodywork, deep side skirts, and aggressive front end, this is a machine that refuses to blend in. Finished in classic white with its original DP widebody conversion still intact, the car exudes attitude from every angle. The exaggerated proportions, integrated rear spoiler, and DP-specific details are all present, telling the story of a bygone era when individuality reigned and tuner culture pushed boundaries. Inside, the cabin remains a wonderfully analog space, steeped in the unmistakable feel of early-80s Porsche engineering. The car still starts, runs, and drives, but it shows its age — and proudly so. This is not a freshly restored showpiece, but a survivor that carries the marks of time with dignity. Some light mechanical attention is needed to bring it back to full driving confidence: expect minor maintenance items, possible suspension refresh, and a general once-over. But the bones are solid, the character untouched, and the potential immense. With only a limited number of DP-built 928s known to exist, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a truly unique piece of Porsche tuning history. Whether you're looking to preserve its worn-in charm or take it on a journey of sympathetic restoration, this DP 928 offers a compelling starting point — raw, real, and refreshingly unfiltered. - 1988 Porsche 959 'Komfort'
Porsche stunned the automotive world when it unveiled the 959 at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show. Identified internally as the Type 961, this new machine was to be the German automaker’s entry into the cutting-edge FIA Group B international rally championship arena, a no-holds-barred rally of the old school where practically any technology was permissible. This no-limits policy encouraged a long list of automakers to create incredibly powerful and extremely fast vehicles, all of which required production of at least 200 street-legal examples on which these rally specials could be based. The 959’s chassis was set on the same 89.4-inch wheelbase as the 911 Carrera with the cabin’s center section, including its stamped floorplan, nearly identical to the 911. The front trunk lid and doors were aluminum; the extended nose section with almost flush headlamps was molded of polyurethane, and the remainder of the shell from fiberglass-reinforced Kevlar. Extensive ducting and venting in the nose to cooled the front brakes and oil radiator. The body’s rear section was greatly extended and widened, generously ventilated, and topped with a full-width rear wing. Powering this advanced chassis was the true brilliance of the 959. A 2.85-liter, sequentially twin-turbocharged, double overhead camshaft, flat-six equipped with air-cooled cylinders and 24-valve, water-cooled heads. The engine was largely based on those used in the brilliant “Moby Dick” IMSA GT coupe and Porsche’s Indy open-wheel projects. Featuring a pair of asymmetrical turbochargers, each of them intercooled, this engine delivered seamless power, with a small turbocharger spinning up almost from idle to establish low-end boost, while the second exhaust-driven turbine came into play at 4,500 rpm. At full throttle and maximum boost, this relatively small engine produced a stunning 444 horsepower. Power was fed through a specially designed BorgWarner six-speed manual transaxle, which included an extremely low "gelände"—terrain—gear for use in off-road situations the Type 961 rally car might encounter. The Porsche-Steur-Kupplung (PSK) all-wheel-drive system allowed the driver to vary the 370 pounds-feet of torque between front and rear axles, with up to 80 percent to the rear under hard acceleration, all managed electronically. The 959’s highly advanced suspension was also race-derived, with double wishbones at each corner, coil springs, and double shocks that could be adjusted by the turn of a knob from the driver’s seat. Both the ride height and shock damping were electronically adjustable, and a full array of instruments kept the driver in touch with everything going on behind and beneath. Special 17-inch lightweight magnesium alloy wheels and model-specific run-flat tires were created for the 959, and the wheels included one of the first automatic pressure-monitoring systems. The antilock braking system featured large, ventilated discs. Most 959s were delivered as “Komfort” models, with an array of amenities, including full leather trim and air conditioning. The 959 was an amazing performer. It could reach 60 mph in under four seconds and cover the standing quarter mile in about 12 seconds on its way to a 197-mph top speed, making it the fastest street-legal production car of its day. With the cancellation of Group B racing in 1986, the 959 continued as a customer road-car model, although it cost so much to build that Porsche is said to have taken a 50-percent loss on every car. By the conclusion of production in 1988, just 292 examples had been built. The 1988 959 Komfort model offered here is believed to be one of only 31 finished in the less-common shade of Graphite Metallic, with a dark gray leather interior and optioned with a factory alarm system. Sold new to Italy, the car is reported to have been first owned by a Porsche executive who retained it for personal use. Stewardship of chassis number 149 then passed to an American Porsche collector who is reported to have brought the car to the United States and registered it for road use. By 2015, it had been acquired by luxury car broker Copley Motor Cars of Needham, Massachusetts, who commissioned a thorough mechanical restoration by marque specialists European Performance Engineering of Natick, Massachusetts. Documented work included a full rebuild of the 2.85-liter, twin-turbocharged engine, installing a new clutch and slave cylinder, as well as a new engine control unit for a total cost more than $120,000. The car then made its way to Australia where, in 2022, it was entrusted to Porsche Centre Melbourne for a full service to manufacturer specifications. In addition to the usual fluid and brake tasks, Porsche Centre Melbourne also fully rebuilt the front and rear suspension systems, including new shocks and bump stops, for a final cost of over $19,000. Showing 23,399 kilometers (14,540 miles) at its time of cataloguing, chassis 149 has been driven less than 1,700 kilometers (1,056 miles) since its six-figure mechanical overhaul and engine rebuild in 2015. It is accompanied by its original Italian-language warranty and service and owner’s manuals, a factory tool roll, and an assortment of recent service invoices. Renowned for its versatility, a car able to exceed even the most capable driver’s expectations on the track before shuttling them on everyday jaunts around town, the 959 remains a hallowed chapter in Porsche’s storied history. As the collector market increasingly fixates on rare or unusual color schemes and liveries, this impeccably maintained and beautifully presented example in its less-common, factory-correct Graphite Metallic finish will be of particular interes. Its unique specification, extensive recent sorting, and relatively low mileage surely put it at the top of its class. 1988 Porsche 959 'Komfort' RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1967 Lotus Elan S3 Drophead
This example was comprehensively restored under prior ownership and completed just after the current owner purchased the car in 2020. The restoration began with a sound example that had reportedly traveled just 18,500 miles when the restoration commenced. Believed to have been under single long-term ownership located in Florida, the restoration began when Hayes Harris, owner of Wire Wheel, Vero Beach, FL purchased the car in the late 1990s/early 2000s. Enlisting the assistance of Dave Bean, Dave Bean Engineering, a frame off restoration was reportedly performed. Nearing completion in December 2004, the car was sold to a San Diego, CA based British car enthusiast who finished the restoration with important upgrades including a custom tan/brown interior. This prior owner enjoyed the car for fifteen years adding an additional 40k miles to the car as an active participant in Southern California British car events achieving Best in Class awards in the Lotus Class for 2012, 2014, 2017, and 2018. Under his long-term ownership some of the notable improvements performed on the car included: Prestige hardwood burl walnut dashboard Top end engine rebuild by Bill Schlossnagel (October 2018, @55,500 miles) Ported and polished head with new SS oversized valves and bronze valve guides 3:91 differential with JAE CV joint axles Bean Engineering water pump cartridge RD Enterprises high torque gear reduction starter RD Enterprises alternator RD Enterprises electric cooling fan with manual override Bean Engineering pressure plate and 8.5” heavy duty clutch Bean Engineering differential stiffening brace Exhaust headers In 2018 a major service and tune up was performed including new belts and hoses, Weber carburetors disassembled, cleaned and tuned, all fluids replaced, and an oil and filter change performed in May 2019. In 2o2o, the current owner purchased the car, accumulating approximately 1, 200 miles over the past three years. Services performed in April 2021 included new tires and tubes, exhaust mount adjustment, new alternator and alternator bracket, and rewiring for charging circuit improvement. Also at this time, the headlights, taillights, and side lights were replaced with LED light bulbs. In January 2023 the car was serviced by Mountune, Carson, CA including servicing the front and rear suspension with new uprated top shock bushings, a rear coil over kit including new rear shocks, adjusting the ride height (Elan front 10” 150 lbs springs), repacking and adjusting front wheel bearings, and pressure checking the cooling system. Services continued with a new distributor cap, rotor, front bearing kit, and new spark plugs. In August 2023, the car returned to Mountune where both Weber carburetors were rebuilt, a new fuel pump installed, engine mount supports welded (engine removed for this work), a new heater valve installed, and a front-end alignment, corner balance, and suspension adjustments performed at a subcontracted alignment service center. Current Condition and Features Today this beautiful S3 presents in excellent condition with high gloss vivid red paint that shows very nicely in all respects with just a few small imperfections noted in the paint. There are a few chips on the passenger side front wheel opening, minor chips on the silver painted front bumper, and slight warping to the front bumper trim strip. The doors fit quite well, however the hood sits a bit proud of the body surface when closed as does the trunk lid which displays a raised profile on the driver’s side edge. The lighting and emblems are in excellent condition, showing not only great fit, but care in detailing. The glass appears to be original to the car with some evidence of road use showing on the windshield. A set of silver painted steel wheels are correctly finished with chrome lug nuts, wearing Michelin 155 80R13 tires and inner tubes installed in 2021. The interior is beautifully finished with high quality materials, correct carpeting, nicely matched door panels, and a black rear section tonneau cover. The convertible top and top bows are included with the car and stow under the rear tonneau. The vinyl convertible top is included loose but can be fitted to the top mechanism. The seats and door panels have been trimmed in two tone brown and tan interior which creates a very pleasing look and feel to the interior. The burl wood dashboard, beautifully finished instruments, Lotus emblem wooden gear shift knob, and alloy spoke steering wheel deliver a nicely balanced vintage touch to the interior. The trunk is lined with high quality black carpeting and houses a 12V battery fitted with a trickle charger dongle. Under the hood, the Lotus twin cam engine displays excellent finishes including the painted twin cam head, proper hardware, and generally correct components with a few important contemporary upgrades including a high torque starter, modern alternator, electric cooling fan, and tuned header-type exhaust. Attention to detail continues throughout the engine compartment highlighted by a pair of correct and recently rebuilt dual throat Weber carburetors. The tidy engine compartment is both clean and well-prepared. The underside of the car has been restored and detailed including the red painted underbody, grey chassis, and black suspension components, some of which are now showing signs of age since the restoration was completed. The car starts easily and idles smoothly with a nice warm tone to the exhaust. The ride is confident, solid, and greatly improved via the suspension upgrades. As anyone who has driven these cars in the past will attest, these cars are differentiated by thoughtful and persistent mechanical refinement from dedicated owners and specialists driven to achieve that “just right” balance of originality and engineering improvements resolved from years of refinement. This example benefits greatly from the history of enthusiast ownership improving both the mechanical features and delightful Lotus packaging that so eagerly captured enthusiasts when first released and continue to do so with new generations of Lotus Elan enthusiasts. Included with this car The car is accompanied by 2021 and 2023 service invoices, a black convertible top, assorted spare parts, an owner’s handbook, and a spare red shifter boot. 1967 Lotus Elan S3 Drophead Fantasy Junction If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. - 1949 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Passo Corto Super Sport Cabriolet by Pinin Farina
Often termed “The Last Great Alfa”, the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 represented the end of a long line of six-cylinder Alfa Romeos that began in 1928 with the 6C 1500. The 6C 2500 was introduced in 1938 and was built until 1952. In creating the 6C 2500, Alfa Romeo retained the 6C 2300’s independently sprung suspension while upgrading the engine. Bruno Treviso redesigned the classic straight six-cylinder engine, increasing the cylinder bore by two millimetres for a 2.5-litre displacement as well as improving the cylinder head for enhanced aspiration and increased compression. In the case of the car offered here, these improvements were combined with the more desirable Super Sport, or “SS”, chassis, creating among the most powerful and sought after configurations ever offered by Alfa Romeo. Built on 10 May 1949, this Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS, chassis 915783, was sent to Pinin Farina and received their cabriolet body on a desirable short-wheelbase chassis – or Passo Corto in Italian. A certificate of origin was issued on 8 August and the car was registered on 5 September, delivered in Genova with licence plates “GE 46353”. Ordered new by the famous Italian sugar company Eridania Zuccherifici Nazionali, the 6C was one of the most expensive cars in the world at this time, costing Eridania 4.4 million Italian lire. On 25 September 1957, Eridania sold the Alfa Romeo to Fidia S.R.L. of Genova for the sum of 300,000 lire. The owner of Fidia, Mr Antonio Luscardo, sold the car on 24 March 1971 to Mr Arnaldo Ginocchio, who retained it until 1989, when he sold the car to Mondo VI SpA. On 30 March 1995, chassis 915873 changed hands, but a year later, the car sold to the previous owner. On 22 May 1997, the Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo (RIAR) inspected chassis 915873 and on 10 June that year, confirmed its certification after meeting their high standards. A note on their certificate commends the vehicle for adhering to the factory specifications. In 1998, this car also received an ASI identity card, which accompanies the car. In 2019 the previous owner decided to part ways with his beloved 6C 2500 SS and sold the car to the current owner – an esteemed collector – on 11 May that year. This Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS is an extremely well-preserved example, retaining its original interior, and has always remained in Italian ownership. Today, it is still registered with its original Genova registration number. The bodywork sports Bordeaux paint, contrasted by a beige convertible soft top and an oxblood leather interior. Offered with RIAR and ASI homologation papers as well as a Certificate of Origin from Alfa Romeo, upon inspection it has been confirmed that chassis 915783 retains its matching-numbers engine. As one of just 383 short-wheelbase examples built, alongside its esteemed certification, this 6C 2500 Super Sport is sure to draw attention on the open roads or the concours lawns. The car represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire one of Alfa Romeo’s most iconic post-war designs, which is highly eligible for all major historic rallies and concours events. 1949 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Passo Corto SS RM Sotheby's If you are interested in the content of this listing, please contact the Dealer. The notice and take down procedure is described here: https://www.speedholics.com/copyright Often termed “The Last Great Alfa”, the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 represented the end of a long line of six-cylinder Alfa Romeos that began in 1928 with the 6C 1500. - 1989 Mercedes-Benz 500SL Roadstre
The Mercedes 500SL R107 is a legendary car that has left its mark on the history of luxury motoring. Produced from 1980 to 1989, this elegant convertible not only embodied style and sophistication, but also set new standards in performance and technical innovation. The Mercedes-Benz R107 series made its debut in 1971 with the 350SL model. This series was designed to succeed the much-loved W113 series, commonly known as the 'Pagoda', which had set high standards for luxury sports cars. The 500SL, introduced in 1980, quickly became the flagship model in the range. It represented the pinnacle of the R107 series with its 5.0-litre V8 engine, combining power and refinement. The 500SL was developed at a time when Mercedes-Benz was striving to establish its reputation for safety and reliability, in addition to the brand's luxury credentials. It incorporated many of the technological innovations that were at the forefront of the automotive industry at the time. These innovations were often the result of decades of research and development, with a particular focus on continuously improving safety, comfort and performance. The Mercedes 500SL R107 boasts an impressive technical specification: Engine: 5.0-litre V8 with Bosch K-Jetronic electronic fuel injection Power: Approximately 240 hp at 4,750 rpm Torque: 402 Nm at 3200 rpm Transmission: 4-speed automatic. Top speed: Approximately 225 km/h- Acceleration: 0 to 100 km/h in around 7.5 seconds In terms of safety, the 500SL was equipped with advanced systems for its time, such as ABS (anti-lock braking system), a revolutionary feature. The chassis was also designed to offer maximum rigidity and safety in the event of an accident, with deformation zones programmed to absorb impact energy. The design of the 500SL R107 is timeless. The exterior features elegant, classic lines, a long bonnet that houses the powerful V8 engine, and an iconic grille with the Mercedes star standing proudly in the centre. Square headlights and chrome bumpers add to the car's sophisticated look. The interior of the 500SL was equally impressive, showcasing high quality materials and meticulous attention to detail. The leather seats offered exceptional comfort, especially with the RECARO option, while the ergonomic dashboard allowed the driver to easily control all aspects of the vehicle. The easy-to-operate fabric soft top provided an unrivalled open-top driving experience, and Mercedes also offered a removable hardtop as an option, transforming the 500SL into a stylish coupé for the winter months. Mercedes-Benz engineers also ensured that the 500SL offered exceptional driving comfort. The independent suspension and adjustable dampers contributed to precise handling and a comfortable ride, whether on motorways or winding roads. The air conditioning and heating systems were designed to maintain optimum comfort in all weather conditions. The Mercedes 500SL R107 was not only a symbol of luxury and performance, it was also a pioneering vehicle in terms of automotive technology. In addition to ABS, the 500SL introduced a number of other technical innovations that influenced the automotive industry. Airbags: The 500SL was among the first models to offer airbags, a significant addition to occupant safety. Front airbags were available for the driver and front passenger, representing a major advance in crash protection. Traction Control: Another notable addition was the Traction Control system, designed to improve the vehicle's stability on slippery surfaces. This system reduced wheel spin by automatically adjusting engine power and applying the brakes if necessary. Chassis and Suspension: The 500SL's chassis was a true engineering feat, designed to offer maximum rigidity while maintaining a relatively low weight. The four-wheel independent suspension provided exceptional handling and superior ride comfort. The success of the Mercedes 500SL R107 was immediate, and its aura inspired the greatest from Hollywood to the British crown. The 500SL, often favored by Hollywood stars, appeared regularly in numerous films and television series, becoming a veritable icon of glamour and luxury on the screen. Films such as "American Gigolo" and TV series such as "Dallas" helped to reinforce its image as a dream car. The 500SL was also appreciated by royalty. Princess Diana, for example, owned an R107, adding to the aura of prestige surrounding the car. Her choice of the 500SL was widely publicised in the media, further raising the profile and desire for the car among the general public. As a result, the R107 is one of Mercedes-Benz's longest-running production series, running for 18 years from 1971 to 1989. This is testament to its popularity and pioneering design, which kept it competitive and desirable for almost two decades. During this period, over 237,000 units of the R107 were produced, making it one of the best-selling series in Mercedes-Benz history. 500SL racing: although primarily designed as a luxury car, the 500SL also took on the rigours of racing. As well as appearances on the racetrack, a project for a 500SL Rally was born from the dynamic mind of Max Waxenberger. He had the car fitted with an aluminium roll bar and replaced some of the metal chassis panels with thinner ones. The roof was not welded but fixed with seven screws. Much of the interior has also been modified, with the Recaro plastic driver's seat weighing just 4kg. In the end, the new Mercedes R107 rally car weighed in at 1,350kg. That's around 236kg less than the 500SLC. Following a last-minute disagreement between Waxenberger and the factory, the project was abandoned, although 4 cars were produced to be entrusted to the expert hands of Röhrl and Vatanen... In conclusion: the Mercedes 500SL R107 remains an iconic car in automotive history. With its timeless design, impressive performance and association with glamour and luxury, it continues to be appreciated by collectors and car enthusiasts around the world. Its heritage endures, making it not only a treasured collector's item, but also an icon of automotive engineering and design. As a symbol of a bygone era when precision engineering and refined design went hand in hand, the Mercedes 500SL R107 remains a living automotive legend.
