Exceptional restoration by J & L Fabrication, Concorso Italiano winner. Artfully fitted with Borrani wire wheels. All work performed wihtout regards to expense. Likely the finest restored Fiat Dino we have ever encountered. This Dino Spider has the unique distinction of being one of the finest restorations we have ever seen on this series car. The restoration, completed from start to finish by experts at J&L Fabrications, WA, is consistent with the quality and finishes found on premier concours winning Ferraris of significantly higher value. And while it would be prohibitively expensive to embark on such a restoration today, twenty years ago, the cost-no-object restoration performed on this car is said to have exceeded $300k. Records accompanying this Dino Spider begin with service invoices with agencies located in Europe as early as 1988 and a Swiss emissions certificate dated April 7, 1995. Restoration records and service documents accompanying the car under US ownership began in 2000 with work commissioned under prior ownership performed by J&L Fabrication from 2001-late 2003. The car was completely disassembled, appropriate parts glass bead or sand blasted per specific materials, suspension, brakes, engine, and transmission were removed and the engine placed on a stand for optimal restoration efforts. All duct work was removed, new heater controls installed, all wiring removed, and the steel floor pan assessed for repairs. The front floor pan was carefully removed, and new metal welded in place. Areas with light corrosion were addressed and chemically treated in flanged and folded steel areas typically prone to rust. All suspension components were rebuilt and refinished, while metal work continued on the rear of the car, rear bumper, doors, hood, and aluminum trunk lid. Chrome parts were sent out for refinishing and polishing including all stainless trim. Where needed, various new trim parts were purchased to replace mostly worn soft items that could not be prudently refurbished. All rubber and soft materials were purchased new and test fit to the car before final fitting. The rebuilt engine was dyno tested, the rebuilt transmission prepared for reinstallation, and the complete interior was finished with the owner selecting black leather to trim the seats and various interior panels. A Becker Monza cassette radio was installed inside the center console. Upon completion in late 2003, the car was shown and awarded a class prize at a subsequent Concorso Italiano. The next owner purchased the car from the restorer and spent an additional $55,000 converting the standard wheels to Borrani wire wheels. The conversion included brand new Borrani wheels, correct Michelin X radial tires, and specially fabricated hubs to allow for the wire wheel offset and correct wheel position inside the wheel arches. The current consigning owner purchased the car in 2o14 and has since tended to the car with similar care afforded by prior owners. On January 15, 2016, the engine was dyno tested returning 165 hp at 6400 rpm. Condition Overview Today this Dino Spider must be counted as one of the finest examples of premier restoration, exciting performance, and exceptional Italian coachwork. The red paint has been expertly applied offering smooth finish throughout and gleaming reflections. The forward portion of the car is treated with crystal clear paint protection film which has protected the finish from road chips. The finish is beautifully detailed, the doors shut with precision, and all panels fit flush to the body surfaces, exceeding factory specifications at every corner. The chrome trim is bright and virtually unmarked showing mirror-like reflections. The trim, window molding, emblems, and badges are all in exceptional condition heralding the Pininfarina design and Dino nomenclature. Glass lenses and turn indicator lenses are bright and vivid. The brand new zero-mile Borrani wire wheels have been correctly finished including chrome center knockoffs and Michelin X 205/70 VR14 tires which add a touch of performance character. All five of the original Cromodoro wheels are included with the car. The beautifully restored black leather interior reflects excellent quality, correct stitching, and attention to detail befitting the finest restorations. Not only are the seating and door panel surfaces restored to a very high standard, the quality and detailing are very well done particularly the seat piping and correctly pleated seat inserts. Careful dash pad installation is beautifully done with excellent contours against the wood trim panel. The dashboard houses a set of correct Veglia Borletti gauges featuring vivid numeric indication and excellent finishes on the dial faces, bezels, and lenses. The 5-speed shifter, wrapped in matching black leather, sits prominently at the console center while the various Italianate interior details convey the sporting nature of these unique and rare Pininfarina spiders. The interior is accented by a beautifully finished and correct wood rim steering wheel, featuring linear louvered spokes and Fiat center emblem. The rear seating area, finished in a similar motif as the front seats, though suitable for smaller passengers, is perhaps more inviting as travel storage for overnight luggage. Under the hood, the all-aluminum quad cam Dino V6 engine has been thoughtfully restored and detailed with originality in mind. The engine components have been prepared to very high standards featuring honest and unpretentious alloy castings revealing the Dino name across the cam covers. The correct black air cleaner, factory correct hoses, clamps, and accessories reflect period correct features including Magneti Marelli electrical components, red ignition wires, and triple downdraft Weber carburetors. The trunk area is nicely finished with correct carpeting and a full-sized Borrani spare with matching Michelin X tire housed in the recessed tire tub. The underside of the car is further evidence of the high-quality restoration performed on the entire car, featuring correct castings, factory type finishes, comprehensively rebuilt suspension and brakes, and properly specified lines, and hoses. One of the most beautifully designed open sports cars of this period, this Dino Spider is not only rare, the Ferrari connection, exquisite Pininfarina design, and superlative restoration, seamlessly combine to offer the next owner invitations to many vintage car tours or premier concours events held throughout the world. Items Included with the Car The car comes with a set of five Cromodora 14” x 6.5” wheels with contemporary radial tires, copies of numerous detailed invoices from the restoration, copies of service manuals, a jack and tire tools with black bag, a red car cover, a black canvas tonneau cover, four hubs appropriate for the original wheels, four Fiat branded triple ear knock offs, Becker Autoradio manuals for the stereo unit, and a Swiss emissions certificate dated April 7, 1995.
