Description

The 250 GT Lusso is widely regarded as one of the most elegant and timeless designs by Pininfarina. Introduced in 1962 the 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso was Ferrari's latest intermediate model, a vehicle to bridge the gap between competition racers and luxuriously appointed 2+2 Coupe's. Just 351 examples were built between 1963 and late 64. Widely regarded as the epitome of the "La Dolce Vita" few cars can rival the effortless elegance and style of a 250 GT Lusso. This remarkable Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso has been in the care of just one family since 1968, from its original home in Woodbridge, Suffolk to the sunnier climes of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand for the past 14 years. Supplied new through Colonel Ronnie Hoare’s Maranello Concessionaires in Blu Chiaro over Nero, ‘ALP 7B’ was originally used as a demonstrator from their base at the Tower Garage in Egham, Surrey from April 21st 1964. Imagery in file shows that Hoare in fact drove the car to Reims 12hr in July 1964 to bear witness to Graham Hill & Jo Bonnier's 1st place in the Maranello Concessionaires 250 LM. An unusual choice for a demonstrator; this example was the penultimate right-hand drive example to be built with its original configuration no doubt inspiring the final right-hand drive example. The car was sold the following month on 8th of August, to dealership Dove of Northampton on behalf of Mr Baxter who would own the car for several years. In 1968, this Lusso was sold to Nigel Sheffield, owner of Nigel Sheffield Investments. By this time, the car had been refinished in Rosso which it still presents in today. The accompanying history binder thoroughly documenting Sheffield’s ownership, with the car seeing regular servicing by marque experts; Maranello Concessionaires until the early 1970s and then from 1975 until 1987 David Clarke’s Graypaul Ferrari. After a bit of a falling out over the cost of a replacement rear spring and the 52 hours of (latterly justified) labour time to change the rear spring, Sheffield moved his custom to Bob Houghton Ltd for the servicing of both his Lusso and similarly his 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’. The Daytona remains in the family to this day. In 1998, Sheffield would move his servicing for the Lusso once more this time to Terry Hoyle of Essex who would care for the car until 2008. Passing to his daughter’s care in 2009, the Lusso would find new residence in the sunnier climes of New Zealand. Continuing to use and enjoy the car, servicing would be kept in check by several local specialists. Far from a car tucked away, the Lusso most recently took part in the Classic Alpine Tour in 2022 in New Zealand. Recently repatriated to the UK, this 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso retains its original registration mark, original interior and Rosso paintwork from the late 60s. A remarkable opportunity to acquire a very original but usable example, affording the ideal candidate for either a preservation or restoration exercise. This 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso is available to view by appointment at our showrooms outside London immediately.
