This car was originally built as a stock 1958 Normale which was upgraded to Veloce specifications using cams, twin carburetors, and Acusump in lieu of an original-type Veloce oil pan. The car was sold to Dick Jeffries in 2000 as a road car project offered by Alfa Parts proprietor Larry Dickman. Although Dick prepared the car for racing, he never raced it. In 2005, Jeffries sold the car to the current owner, a resident of Northern California, who began racing it and has continued to do so for the past 20 years. The engine formerly in the car gave up in 2005 with a DNF at Laguna Seca when the #3 rod seized. That engine was replaced with a new unit built by Terry Tinney which lasted several seasons. In 2017, the engine was rebuilt by Alfa Romeo expert Glenn Oliveria. Handwritten notes dated 2017 include reference information on the late model APE engine block with a spin-on oil filter, nitrided and balanced crankshaft from Glenn Oliveria, threaded oil plugs, Arias pistons, and detailed notation regarding ring end caps, rod bolt stretch, TDC overlap, and other specifications. This engine currently resides in the car. Additionally, the front brakes have been fitted with disc brakes for improved braking over the former all wheel drum brakes. Over the years, this car has participated in CSRG and HMSA events where it has been notably competitive and enjoyably driven by the current owner. The current owner, a long-term vintage racing enthusiast is retiring from racing and thus a substantial amount of extras accompany the car allowing the next owner to begin or advance their vintage racing participation with less preparation than might be typically expected including important safety items like the Stand 21 FHR safety device, Helmet, and other extras. Two CSRG logbooks included with this car begin in 2005 including events at Sears Point, Laguna Seca, Thunderhill, and Sonoma. Invoices from previous engine builds outline specifications, parts selected, fluids changed in prep for racing, and other consumables as part of the mechanical history collected over the past 20 years. Recent invoices include: 2025 – New battery 2023 – Transmission rebuild (Oliveria Engineering) 2023 – Four new Hoosier tires 2022 – Replace clutch, new throw-out bearing, pressure plate, pilot bushing2021 – Axle bearing and brake pads General Condition and Overview Today this Alfa Romeo presents in generally good condition with vintage race car finishes and trim consistent with a car that can be enjoyed at the track and not worried about when battling with the pack. The doors, trunk, and hood display good fit, opening and closing properly and latching securely. Though these cars were originally built with steel body panels, both the hood and the trunk have been replaced with lighter weight fiberglass components. A pair of leather buckled latches secure the rear hinged hood. The windshield has been removed and replaced with a low-profile plastic windscreen and the bumpers have been removed in keeping with race cars of the period. A set of stamped steel wheels are correctly finished with silver paint and are currently fitted with a set of 185/65 R15 Hoosier Speedster tires dated 2022. The stance has been lowered and the wheel and tire combination nests properly beneath the wheel arches. The various trim, lighting, and lenses are in good condition as are the twin side view mirrors and carbon fiber center rear view mirror. The interior has been modified for vintage racing use with twin racing bucket seats, Pyrotech driver’s side seat harness (current on time), a wide lap belt for the passenger seat, a handheld fire extinguisher, original style gauges, a wood rimmed Nardi steering wheel, contemporary gauges for monitoring engine vitals, Alfa Romeo branded foot pedals, a lightened wood dead pedal, and numerous event stickers wrapped around the removable diagonal roll bar tube on the left side of the driver’s seat. The car is outfitted with a floor mounted 5-speed manual gearbox which was rebuilt in 2023 including synchros. A multipoint roll bar with roll hoop and head pad is installed with mounts at the floor and behind the driver’s seat. Overall, the interior is purposeful, clean, and sparse, ready for racing duty. The trunk houses a 12V battery (purchased in 2025) and a 5-gallon capacity JAZ foam lined fuel cell (current on time). Under the hood, the rebuilt 1300cc twin-cam engine features twin dual-throat Weber carburetors, a Veloce cast aluminum intake plenum, Alfa Romeo branded cast aluminum head cover, and other purposeful details specific to race duty. The undercarriage is generally sound with function-minded aesthetics, solid floor and rocker areas, and generally good condition to the various suspension mounting points, engine and gearbox castings, and engine support cradle. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a vintage race car that has been thoughtfully prepared by experts ready for vintage racing events. Included with this car This Alfa is accompanied by a host of spare items including: A set of four Panasport ProRally wheels with Hoosier 185/65 R15 tires A driver’s suit and undershirt (formerly worn by 5’11” 200lb driver) Bell Helmet (60 LRG) Stand 21 FHR safety device HANS neck ring Car Cover and bag Extensive notes, reference books and 3” binder Battery Charger Two sets of racing gloves Various spare car parts Three face gloves Two pairs of race shoes and socks Lightweight aluminum jack Drive up ramps Wheel chock A spare metal hood and trunk lid
